Short answer: you cannot convert a JPG that exists only on your phone or computer into a URL without uploading it somewhere online. Upload the file to an image host, cloud-storage service, or your own web server, then copy either a sharing link or a direct image-delivery URL. Use a direct image URL when a website, email editor, or API must load the image itself.
What a JPG URL actually is
A URL identifies an online resource. A local path such as C:UsersYouPicturesphoto.jpg or /Photos/photo.jpg works only on your device; other people and web services cannot fetch it. Uploading creates an online copy that a server can deliver over HTTPS.
There are two different links you may receive:
- Sharing link: opens a provider page or viewer. It is suitable for sending a file to people and can be protected by permissions.
- Direct image URL: returns the JPG (or another image representation) itself. It is required by many HTML
<img>fields, backgrounds, newsletters, and APIs that fetch image bytes.
A link that opens successfully in your browser can still be wrong for an embed if it returns an HTML viewer page instead of image/jpeg.
Choose the right hosting method
| Method | Best for | What you get | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imgur | Quick public image sharing | A direct image URL can be copied from the image | Keep the URL, especially for anonymous uploads; you may need it to request deletion. Imgur’s instructions recommend signing in for easier management. |
| Cloudinary | Embedding, delivery, and transformations | A hosted delivery URL and optional resized or reformatted versions | Review visibility settings. Cloudinary says derived versions of private assets can be publicly accessible by default unless additional restrictions are configured. See its image-link tool and access documentation. |
| Google Drive | Sharing with selected people or anyone with a link | A permission-controlled Drive sharing link | Usually a viewer link, not a direct image URL. Google says the owner’s name and email are visible when a file link is shared. Check current sharing settings. |
| Dropbox | Sending files or folders to recipients | A Dropbox sharing link | Confirm that the destination accepts Dropbox links as image sources; it is primarily a file-sharing workflow. See Dropbox link help and sharing outside Dropbox. |
| Your website or web server | Control over site assets and URLs | A URL on your own domain | Requires hosting access and an upload/deployment process. |
Step-by-step: upload a JPG and copy its URL
- Decide what the recipient needs. Choose a direct image host for an embed or API. Choose Drive or Dropbox when a person only needs to view or download the file with access controls.
- Prepare the file. Confirm that it is actually a JPG/JPEG, remove sensitive metadata if appropriate, and give it a descriptive filename. Do not upload private material to a public-by-link host.
- Upload it. Use the provider’s upload button or drag-and-drop flow. Cloudinary’s tool specifically supports uploading or dragging in an image and then generating a shareable link: cloudinary.com/tools/create-link-for-image.
- Copy the correct link. Look for labels such as “Copy image address,” “Direct link,” or “Delivery URL.” In a provider viewer, right-clicking the displayed picture and copying its image address may produce the asset URL, but only if the provider allows it.
- Set access. Select public, anyone-with-the-link, named recipients, or a signed/time-limited URL according to the task. Treat “anyone with the link” as public possession of the file.
- Test before sending. Open the link in a private browser window where you are not signed in. Then paste it into the actual email, website field, chat app, or API that will use it.
Cloudinary direct delivery URLs
After an upload, Cloudinary documents a delivery pattern such as https://res.cloudinary.com/<cloud_name>/image/upload/<public_id>.<extension>. Replace the placeholders with the values from your account and uploaded asset; the template is not a working URL before those values exist. Cloudinary can also produce transformed URLs for resizing or format changes through its image-transformation system.

Google Drive: making a share link usable
In Drive, select the JPG, choose Share, set General access to the required audience, choose a role, and select Copy link. This creates a Drive sharing link that normally opens a Google viewer. It is not guaranteed to return image bytes to an HTML <img src> or an image-fetching API. Google states that anyone with the link can use the file without signing in when that setting is selected, and that the owner’s name and email are visible in the sharing context. Use Drive when controlled human access matters; choose an image-delivery host when direct rendering matters.
Imgur: quick direct image sharing
Upload while signed in if you want the image listed in an account for later management. Imgur says an uploaded item can be located with a direct URL; signed-out uploaders should retain that URL if they may later request deletion. After uploading, open the image and use the provider’s option to copy the image URL rather than the gallery or post URL. Confirm that the copied address opens the image alone.
Using the URL in common destinations
HTML
Use the direct image URL in an image element:
<img src="https://example.com/path/photo.jpg" alt="Description of the photo">
For CSS, place the same direct URL in background-image: url(...). A viewer-page link will usually display a broken image or the provider’s HTML instead.

Email and messaging
Many editors let you insert an image from a URL, but some download and re-host it while others require a publicly reachable HTTPS asset. Paste the direct link, send a test message, and check it while signed out.
APIs and forms
Check whether the field expects a URL, a multipart file upload, or a data URI. A URL field generally requires a publicly fetchable address; a private Drive link may return a login page to the receiving service.
Privacy, permissions, and permanence
- Public-by-link is not private. Anyone who obtains the address can forward it unless the provider enforces authentication or expiry.
- Check account identity exposure. Google Drive documents that the owner’s name and email are visible when a file link is shared.
- Protect sensitive originals. Cloudinary states that private originals can require signed URLs, while derived versions may be public by default; review its current access controls before generating transformations.
- Keep management information. Save the provider account, asset identifier, and deletion method. Anonymous Imgur uploads can be difficult to manage if the direct URL is lost.
- Expect link changes. Deleted files, expired signatures, changed permissions, host outages, or provider URL migrations can break an otherwise valid link.
Troubleshooting: when the URL does not work
The link opens a web page instead of the photo
You copied a viewer or gallery link. Return to the host and choose Direct link or Copy image address. Inspect the response in a browser developer tool or an HTTP client; the direct response should have an image content type such as image/jpeg.

The image works for you but not for others
Your browser is authenticated or the file is restricted. Test in a private window, change the audience to the intended recipients, or use a host that supports public delivery or signed links.
An embed shows a broken image
Check that the URL uses HTTPS, has no accidental spaces or quotation marks, and returns the image itself. Some services block hotlinking or require cookies, which prevents third-party embeds.

The uploaded image is unexpectedly public
Review the asset’s access policy and any transformed or resized URLs separately. Cloudinary’s documentation warns that derived versions of private assets may be public unless further restrictions are configured.

If what you need is a URL-accessible screenshot of a webpage rather than hosting an existing local JPG, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI clients. It is not a local-JPG uploader; it captures the target URL and returns PNG, JPEG, or WebP bytes (or a PDF).
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a JPG on my phone into a URL without uploading it?
No. A URL requires an online host or server; a local file path is not reachable by other devices.

Why does my Google Drive link not embed as an image?
Drive links normally open a viewer page and may require authentication. Use an image-delivery host that supplies a direct asset URL.
Is a direct image URL always permanent?
No. Deletion, permission changes, expired signatures, or provider changes can invalidate it.
