Use WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy to choose who can see your profile photo, About text, last seen and online indicator. Use Status privacy to share each new Status with all contacts, all contacts except selected people, or only selected contacts. Set the audience before posting: changing privacy does not alter a Status that is already live.
Where WhatsApp privacy controls are located
On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Privacy. On some versions the menu is labelled Privacy settings, and the order can differ between Android and iPhone. Use the Privacy screen in the version installed on your device rather than relying on an identical menu layout. WhatsApp documents this route in its Help Center guide to changing privacy settings.

- Open WhatsApp.
- Open Settings. On Android, tap the three-dot menu first if Settings is not shown as a tab; on iPhone, tap Settings in the bottom navigation.
- Tap Privacy.
- Choose the item you want to change: Last seen and online, Profile photo, About, or Status.
- Select the audience and return to the Privacy screen. The change is applied to future visibility immediately, subject to the exceptions described below.
WhatsApp’s help pages describe common defaults, but defaults and labels can change by app version and account. Check the audience shown on your own Privacy screen. WhatsApp also does not provide a setting to hide the phone number used for your account while continuing to use the service; profile controls affect what people see around your account, not the underlying phone number.
What each audience choice means
For profile details, WhatsApp documents four choices. Status has only three, so do not assume that an option available for your profile photo is also available for Status.

Hide or limit your profile photo
To control the picture beside your name, open Settings → Privacy → Profile photo. Select Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, or Nobody.
Use My contacts for a normal private setup
My contacts prevents people who are not in your address book from seeing the profile photo. It is useful when you want people you know to identify you but do not want an unknown number to see the image.

Choose My contacts except…, mark one or more people, and confirm. The excluded contacts remain in your address book and can still message or call you; this setting changes only profile-photo visibility.
Hide the photo from everybody
Choose Nobody when you want no one to see the profile photo through WhatsApp. You can later return to the same menu and restore a broader audience without uploading the picture again.
WhatsApp says it blocks profile-photo screenshots on supported Android and iOS versions. The protection depends on the platform and version and cannot be disabled; it does not stop somebody from photographing the screen with another device or copying information they can otherwise access. Control the About text and links
Open Settings → Privacy → About and select the audience. The same four profile choices apply: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, and Nobody.

- Everyone: the broadest audience offered for About.
- My contacts: limits the text to people saved in your contacts.
- My contacts except…: keeps it visible to contacts other than the people you exclude.
- Nobody: removes the About text from other viewers.
This control governs the About field itself. It does not remove your account from groups, prevent messages, or hide your phone number.
Manage last seen and online visibility
Tap Settings → Privacy → Last seen and online. WhatsApp provides a control for your last-seen time and a separate control for whether people can tell that you are currently online.
Last seen
Choose an audience such as Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, or Nobody, depending on what your app displays. The “Everyone” option is qualified in WhatsApp’s documentation: only people you have called or messaged before, or people you have saved as contacts, can see the last-seen information under that setting.
Online status
The online control determines who can see the indicator while you are using WhatsApp. The installed app may offer Everyone or Same as last seen. Selecting Same as last seen applies the audience chosen for last seen. Selecting Everyone leaves the online indicator broader than the last-seen audience, subject to WhatsApp’s qualification for visibility.

Can you hide last seen but stay visible online?
Yes, when your version shows the two controls separately: set Last seen to Nobody (or a limited audience), then set Online to Everyone. If you do not want anybody to see the online indicator either, choose Same as last seen. The exact labels can differ by platform.

The reciprocal-visibility trade-off
WhatsApp applies a two-way rule: if you hide your last seen or online information, you cannot see other users’ last seen or online information. This is not a per-contact exception; it follows the privacy choice for your account. Read messages and calls continue to work normally.
Choose who can see a WhatsApp Status
Status has its own audience selector. Open Settings → Privacy → Status, or open the Status tab and use its Status-privacy option if your app presents the shortcut. WhatsApp documents three choices:
My contacts
My contacts shares the Status with your contacts. WhatsApp says Status is shared with all contacts by default, although the default shown on an account can change as the app evolves. Verify the selection before posting.

Choose My contacts except… to keep a Status available to most contacts while excluding selected people. Mark every contact who should not see it, then confirm the selection. The exclusion applies to new Status updates posted after you make the change.
Only share with…
Choose Only share with… when the update is meant for a small, defined group. Select the contacts who should receive it and confirm. This is the narrowest Status audience offered by WhatsApp.
Status cannot be set to Everyone
Unlike profile photo and About, Status has no “Everyone” setting. WhatsApp states in its Help Center: “You can’t set status privacy to Everyone.” People must be included through your contacts and the selected Status audience.

Set the audience before you post
Status audience changes are not retroactive. WhatsApp states: “Changes to your privacy settings won’t affect any status you’ve already shared.” If an update is already live, changing Status privacy does not rewrite its audience.

- Select My contacts, My contacts except…, or Only share with….
- Review the contact list carefully and confirm.
- Create and post the Status only after the audience is correct.
- If an existing Status was posted to the wrong audience, open your Status, use the menu for that update, and delete it; then set the intended audience and post a replacement.

Important Status exceptions
Mentions can expand the audience
If you mention a person in a Status, that person can see it even when they are outside the audience you selected. WhatsApp’s Status-mentions explanation says, “They can see your status, even if they aren’t in your status audience.” A mentioned recipient can also reshare the content to their own audience. Do not use a narrow audience as a guarantee that a mentioned person is excluded.
Status posted to a group
A Status posted to a group is visible to all members of that group regardless of your Status privacy setting. If a group contains someone you meant to exclude, avoid posting the update to that group; change the post destination or remove the person from the group through the group’s normal administration controls.
Forwarding, copying and recording
Audience controls determine who can access the update inside WhatsApp; they cannot control what a recipient does afterward. A viewer can copy text, save media where the app permits it, photograph a screen, or record a call and share the result. WhatsApp warns that users may take screenshots of messages or record calls and distribute them. Treat any Status or profile detail visible to another person as potentially shareable.

Read receipts and Status viewers
Read receipts affect Status-view information. If you turn off Read receipts in Settings → Privacy, you cannot see who viewed your Status. If a contact turns off read receipts, you cannot see whether that contact viewed your Status. WhatsApp notes an exception for group chats: read receipts are always sent for group chats. These rules are described in the privacy-settings help page and the Status privacy help page.
Turning read receipts back on does not turn an old, hidden view into a reliable historical record. Use the viewer list while the Status is active and while the relevant receipt settings permit it.
When blocking is the right control
Use blocking when you need to stop a specific person from contacting you and from seeing your account activity, rather than merely narrowing one field. WhatsApp says blocking hides your last seen, online status, Status updates, and profile-photo changes from the blocked user.
Blocking has limits:
- It does not remove either person from a WhatsApp group you both share.
- You can still appear in the same group, so group messages and group visibility require separate action.
- A Status posted before the block may remain visible to that person until the Status expires.
- Blocking does not erase material the person already viewed, copied, photographed, or recorded.

“How do I hide my WhatsApp profile picture?”
- Go to Settings → Privacy → Profile photo.
- Choose Nobody to hide it from everyone, or My contacts except… to exclude selected people.
- Return to the Privacy screen and check that the selected audience is displayed.
“How do I stop one person seeing my Status?”
- Open Settings → Privacy → Status.
- Select My contacts except….
- Choose the person and confirm before creating the next Status.
- Check for mentions and group posting, which can expose the update outside the selected audience.
“Can I share a Status with only certain contacts?”
Yes. Choose Only share with…, select the contacts, confirm, and then post. Remember that a mentioned person can still see the Status and that group Status posts are visible to all members of the group.
“I posted before changing privacy. What now?”
The audience change will not affect that existing update. Delete the live Status, set the correct audience, and post it again. This avoids leaving the original update available to the old audience until it expires.
“I want to hide last seen but remain online.”
In Settings → Privacy → Last seen and online, set Last seen to Nobody (or a limited audience) and Online to Everyone, if those separate choices appear in your app. To hide both, set Online to Same as last seen. Hiding your own information also hides other users’ last seen and online information from you.
Troubleshoot unexpected visibility

A privacy checklist before posting
- Confirm the current audience under Settings → Privacy.
- For Status, choose the audience under Status privacy before opening the composer.
- Review the selected contacts in My contacts except… or Only share with….
- Remove mentions if the mentioned person should not have access.
- Do not post to a group when some group members must be excluded.
- Assume every recipient can copy or record what they see.
- Use blocking for a person who should not see your activity or contact you, while accounting for shared-group and already-posted-Status limits.
What these settings cannot do
WhatsApp’s built-in controls are audience controls, not a guarantee of secrecy. They do not hide the phone number associated with your account, remove you from a shared group, retract a Status that someone already viewed, or stop a recipient from redistributing accessible content. Profile-photo screenshot blocking on supported Android and iOS versions provides a platform-dependent safeguard for that specific image, but it cannot prevent every form of capture.
