It lets you ask Threads to show more or less of selected topics for one, three or seven days. For a public request that lasts three days, use Dear Algo. If you want a feed containing only posts from accounts you follow, switch from For You to Following. Custom feeds, pinning and feed-order settings add longer-term organization.
These controls do different jobs: Algo requests influence topic recommendations for a limited period, Following changes the stream you are viewing, and custom feeds create reusable views. Feature names and availability can differ by account and country as Meta continues rolling them out.

Choose the control that matches your goal
| What you want | Best control | Privacy | Duration or persistence | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| More or less of a topic for a short period | Your Algo | Private request | One, three or seven days | A topic preference in your recommendations |
| Make a public topic request that others can reuse | Dear Algo | Public Threads post | Three days | Your recommendation mix; a repost can apply the request to another user |
| See posts only from accounts you follow | Following | Not applicable | Applies while that feed is selected | The current feed view, rather than the For You mix |
| Keep selected topics or profiles in a dedicated view | Custom feed | Private unless you share it | Reusable; can be pinned and set as the opening feed | Feed organization and quick access |
Meta describes For You as a mixture of followed accounts and recommendations, while Following contains posts from people you follow. Selecting Following is therefore the direct answer when you want a followed-accounts-only view. Meta does not say that it disables recommendations in every other part of the app.
Use Your Algo for a private, time-limited topic request
Your Algo is the most configurable control in Meta’s current announcements. In Meta’s words, “With Your Algo, you can tell Threads you want to see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts: one, three, or seven days.” The setting is private to you, unlike a public Dear Algo post. Read the announcement at Meta’s June 16, 2026 Threads feature update.

How to make a Your Algo request
- Open Threads and look for the Algo controls or the hub that contains Your Algo and Dear Algo. Meta has not published one universal tap path, so the label and location can differ between app versions and accounts.
- Choose Your Algo when the private option is offered.
- Describe the subject you want to see more of, or the subject you want to see less of. Use a specific topic rather than a vague instruction when possible.
- Select the available duration: one, three or seven days.
- Submit the request, then return to the same Algo area later if you need to review or replace it.
The request is temporary. A one-day request is useful for a short event; three or seven days is better when you want the preference to cover a longer conversation. When the selected period ends, the temporary instruction should no longer be treated as an active request. The announcements describe the duration choices but do not promise a particular ranking change, percentage shift or guaranteed number of posts.
When Your Algo is missing
Your Algo was announced on June 16, 2026 as rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Those are the countries named in Meta’s announcement, not a guarantee that every account in those countries has the feature or that no other country has since received it. Update Threads, check the Algo hub again, and treat a missing control as a rollout or account-availability issue rather than a setting you have overlooked. Interface details can change without changing the name of the feature.
Use Dear Algo when a public request is acceptable
Dear Algo works through a public Threads post. Write “Dear Algo” in a post and state what you want more or less of. Meta says that once you share the request, Dear Algo adjusts your feed for three days so you can stay connected to current conversations. A different user can repost another person’s request to apply those preferences to their own feed. The full announcement is at Meta’s February 11, 2026 Dear Algo announcement.

- Create a normal public post and begin with the Dear Algo wording recognized by Threads.
- State the topic you want increased or reduced. Keep the request understandable to people who may see or repost it.
- Publish the post. The request lasts three days according to Meta’s description.
- Remember that the post is public. Do not include personal information or a sensitive interest you would not want associated with your profile.
Dear Algo is useful when you want to make a shareable, public preference or participate in a wider conversation. It is the wrong choice when the subject itself is private. In that case, use Your Algo if it is available to your account.
Dear Algo availability
Meta’s February 11, 2026 announcement listed the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom for the Dear Algo rollout. The list differs from the later Your Algo announcement, and neither list confirms universal access. Availability can also vary by account, app build and rollout stage.

Switch to Following for a followed-accounts-only view
For You combines posts from followed accounts with recommendations. Following is the direct, clearly defined alternative: Meta describes it as a stream containing posts only from people you follow. It does not require a topic request and has no one-, three- or seven-day expiry.
How to use Following
- Open the feed selector in Threads, using the control that displays the current feed name.
- Select Following instead of For You.
- Leave Following selected whenever you want to read the followed-accounts-only stream, then switch back to For You when you want recommendations included.
The cited Meta documentation does not say that choosing Following turns recommendations off throughout Threads. Recommendations may still appear in For You or in other surfaces, so treat Following as a feed view, not a global opt-out.
Organize interests with custom feeds
Custom feeds are the longer-lived organization layer. Meta says you can create feeds around selected topics, profiles or interests, pin feeds for quick access, and set a custom feed as the default feed that opens when you launch Threads. A public custom feed can also be shared by link or direct message. See Meta’s February 4, 2025 announcement about sharing custom feeds and its March 20, 2025 personalization update.
Create a view for a recurring interest
- Open the custom-feed controls in Threads and choose the option to create a feed, if your account has it.
- Add the profiles, topics or interests that define the view. A narrowly defined feed is easier to use than one that tries to cover everything.
- Save the feed, then pin it if you want it available near the top of your feed list.
- If Threads offers the default-feed option for your account, choose the custom feed so it opens first when the app launches.
Meta’s announcements describe the capabilities but do not provide a single, permanent sequence of buttons for every platform. Use the labels shown in your current app rather than relying on an older screenshot or a guide written for a different rollout.
Share only when you intend to make the feed public
Public custom feeds can be shared through a link or direct message. Sharing distributes the feed definition, not a promise that every recipient will see identical posts; each person’s account, follows and available recommendations can affect what appears. Keep a custom feed private when its topic list reveals an interest you do not want to publish.

Adjust feed order and use the right view for the moment
A practical setup is to keep For You for discovery, Following for a clean stream of followed accounts, and one or more custom feeds for specific interests. Pin the views you use most often, and make a custom feed the default if you prefer to begin with a focused subject rather than a broad recommendation mix. This arrangement reduces the need to issue repeated temporary Algo requests for topics you follow regularly.

Meta has said that posts tagged with topics generally receive more views, but the March 2025 announcement does not publish a numeric result. That statement is not evidence that adding a tag will force a post into your feed or that a custom feed will always rank every matching post above everything else.
Do not confuse recommendation controls with conversation controls
Some Threads settings make the app feel quieter but do not directly set the topics recommended in your feed.
Hidden words
Meta describes hidden words as a way to filter replies. That is a conversation-level filter; the cited announcements do not identify it as a general control for the For You recommendation ranking.
Reply approvals and follower-only replies or quotes
Reply approvals and follower-only reply or quote controls govern who can participate in discussions on your posts. They can reduce unwanted interaction without changing which topics Threads recommends to you.

Unfollow, block, restrict and report
These profile actions address a particular account or a policy concern. Unfollowing removes an account from the set of profiles you follow, while block, restrict and report handle interaction and safety problems. Use them when the problem is a person or abusive behavior, not merely an unwanted topic in recommendations.

“I want less of one subject for this week.”
Use Your Algo and choose seven days, if the feature is available. A temporary private request fits a short-lived preference without making a public post.
“I want more coverage of a live event for a few days.”
Use Your Algo with a one- or three-day duration. If you are comfortable making the request public and shareable, Dear Algo provides a three-day public alternative.
“I only want posts from people I already follow.”
Select Following. Do not assume that this choice removes recommendations from For You or other parts of Threads.
Recommended Free Tools
“I regularly read several subjects and want them separated.”
Create custom feeds, pin the most useful ones, and consider setting one as the default. Use Following when you want no recommendation mix in the current stream.
Best Value
“I dislike a reply thread, not the subject itself.”
Use hidden words, reply approvals, follower-only reply or quote settings, or an account-level action as appropriate. Those tools are not substitutes for Your Algo or Dear Algo.
Troubleshooting when the feed does not look as expected
The Algo option is not visible
- Check that Threads is updated and look for an Algo hub or control in the current interface.
- Confirm that your account and country are within the rollout described by Meta’s dated announcement.
- Do not rely on a screenshot from another account as proof that the control should be present for you.
You selected Following but still see recommendations elsewhere
Check the feed label again. Following is a specific view, while For You remains a separate mixed feed. Meta does not document Following as a global recommendation-disable switch.
A temporary request no longer applies
Check the duration you selected. Your Algo requests can last one, three or seven days; Dear Algo requests last three days. A request ending is expected behavior, not necessarily a failure.
Your custom feed is hard to reach
Pin it if pinning is available, or set it as the default opening feed when Threads presents that option. If the feed was shared with you, open the shared link or direct message again; public-feed availability and controls can vary during rollout.
What Meta’s announcements establish—and what they do not
The controls above are based on Meta’s official product announcements: Dear Algo was announced February 11, 2026; Your Algo and the latest user total were announced June 16, 2026; custom-feed sharing was announced February 4, 2025; and broader personalization controls were described March 20, 2025. Meta reported 500 million monthly active users in the June 16, 2026 announcement. That is broad service context, not a measurement of recommendation accuracy or proof that any particular setting improves ranking for every account.
These announcements explain Meta’s intended behavior and named rollout markets. They do not independently test how much a feed changes, guarantee that every account has received a feature, or provide a universal current tap path for the Your Algo hub. Treat the labels and options visible in your own Threads app as authoritative, and expect the interface and country availability to evolve.
Bottom line
Start with Your Algo when you want a private, temporary topic adjustment. Choose Dear Algo only when a public three-day request is acceptable. Use Following for a followed-accounts-only stream, and custom feeds, pinning and feed order for a durable way to organize recurring interests. Keep hidden words, reply controls and profile actions for interaction problems rather than recommendation tuning.
