Connect the iPhone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network, select your Roku in the app, open Remote, and tap the Headphone icon.
Get Roku’s iPhone app
Install the official Roku mobile app from the Apple App Store. Roku lists iOS 14.0 or later as the iPhone and iPad requirement. The app is free, though movies, channels, or subscriptions you access through it may have separate charges.

How to use your iPhone as a Roku remote
- Connect your iPhone and Roku TV or streaming player to the same Wi-Fi network. The Roku device must already be set up and connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Roku app and sign in if prompted.
- Select your Roku device from the list when it appears. The app searches the local network for Roku devices.
- Tap Remote to open the app remote and control your Roku.
How to listen privately with headphones
- Connect wired headphones to your iPhone, using a compatible connector or adapter if needed, or pair Bluetooth headphones with the phone.
- In the Roku app, open Remote and tap the Headphone icon.
- Set the volume to a safe level before putting on your headphones.
Headphone Mode routes Roku audio to headphones connected to the phone; the iPhone is not independently streaming the TV’s audio. While the mode is active, audio does not come from the TV speakers. Up to four mobile devices can participate at once, according to Roku’s Headphone Mode support page.

Headphone Mode availability depends on the Roku device and what you are watching. Roku lists mobile Headphone Mode for Streambar SE, Streambar, Streambar Pro, and Smart Soundbar when using their built-in streaming player; it does not support external sources such as a game console or cable or satellite box on those soundbars.

For live digital over-the-air television, a Roku TV needs an HDTV antenna. Analog over-the-air TV is not supported in mobile Headphone Mode. If the Headphone icon is missing, check the model’s feature support and make sure the app and Roku device are up to date.
Fix common connection and audio problems
The Roku app cannot find the TV or player
- Check that the phone and Roku are on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the Roku is already connected to Wi-Fi.
- If the Roku is being set up for the first time, has been reset, or has mobile-app control disabled, you may need a physical remote to complete setup or turn app control back on.
Playback stops or restarts when Headphone Mode starts
Roku says playback can stop and restart while audio synchronizes if you switch on Headphone Mode during a program. When possible, enable it before you start watching.

The picture and sound are out of sync
In the Roku app, open Controls and choose Adjust audio delay. Follow the calibration flow; if the initial adjustment does not fix the problem, try the advanced adjustment.

Audio stutters, cuts out, or pops
For wired headphones, check that the plug is firmly seated. For Bluetooth headphones, try pairing them with the iPhone again.

Other ways to listen privately
Some Roku voice remotes have a headphone jack, and some Roku devices support Bluetooth Headphone Mode directly. These are alternatives to using the iPhone app, not prerequisites. Support varies by model; check compatibility with your specific Roku before choosing a replacement remote. Roku notes that using a compatible voice remote’s headphone mode deactivates mobile Headphone Mode.
