Set up your Nanoleaf light in the Nanoleaf app first, then add it to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa using that platform’s setup flow. Before you begin, check whether the light uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, or a non-Matter connection: Matter requires a compatible controller, and Thread also requires a compatible Thread border router. Alexa offers a separate Nanoleaf-account-and-skill setup for non-Matter lights.
Before you start: identify the light and your home hardware
Nanoleaf’s setup instructions differ by connection type. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi light needs a compatible Matter controller. A Matter-over-Thread light needs both a compatible Matter controller and Thread border-router support; a single device can provide both. Non-Matter Nanoleaf lights may use an ecosystem integration such as Alexa’s Nanoleaf skill instead. Check the model’s packaging, product details, or Nanoleaf app to confirm its connection type before following platform-specific steps.

Nanoleaf calls a Matter controller essential for integrating Matter devices into a smart home. Its compatibility list includes Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), and Amazon Echo (4th gen) for Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Other devices on the list may support Wi-Fi only, so verify the specific model and protocol before relying on it. A hub is not required for every Nanoleaf light or every legacy integration. See Nanoleaf’s current Matter controller compatibility list.
For Matter-over-Wi-Fi setup, follow Nanoleaf’s Wi-Fi Matter instructions. For Matter-over-Thread, use its Thread pairing guide and confirm your controller also supports Thread border routing.

Set up Nanoleaf in its app first
Install and open the Nanoleaf app, add the light, and complete any product setup or firmware steps it offers before connecting it to another ecosystem. Nanoleaf recommends starting in its app for both Wi-Fi and Thread Matter products. Keep the light powered and your phone connected to the home network used for setup.
Connect Nanoleaf to Apple Home
After Nanoleaf app setup, add the compatible light to Apple Home from an iOS device, following the Home app’s accessory-pairing prompts. For a Matter light, use its Matter pairing code or QR flow when prompted and ensure a compatible Matter controller is available. For a Thread light, the home also needs a compatible Thread border router.

Once added, Apple Home can organize the accessory by room and use it in scenes, schedules, and automations. Siri can provide voice control. Nanoleaf describes these features on its Apple Home integration page. Nanoleaf-specific settings and selected features may still require the Nanoleaf app.
Connect Nanoleaf to Google Home
- Open Google Home. Start its Matter device setup and scan the light’s Matter QR code when prompted.
- If discovery does not start automatically, add the device manually. In Google Home, choose to add a new device and select the Matter-enabled device flow.
- Finish organizing the light. Assign it a room and name after pairing so it is easy to control.
If Google Home reports “A hub is required to control your Matter-enabled device,” check that a compatible Google Home Matter controller is available. For a Thread light, verify Thread border-router support as well. Nanoleaf’s exact pairing flow is in its Google Home Matter pairing guide.

Connect Nanoleaf to Amazon Alexa
For Matter-enabled lights
In Alexa, use Add Device > Other > Matter, then scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric code. A compatible Matter controller is required. Thread products also require Thread border-router support; check the chosen hardware’s capabilities rather than assuming every Echo supports Thread.

For non-Matter lights
- Set up the light in the Nanoleaf app and sign in to a Nanoleaf account.
- In Alexa, enable the Nanoleaf skill and link the Nanoleaf account.
- Run Alexa’s device discovery to find the light.
Nanoleaf documents this account-and-skill route separately from Matter pairing in its Alexa integration instructions. Alexa can then provide voice control and routines; selected Nanoleaf-only options may remain available only in the Nanoleaf app. See Nanoleaf’s Alexa integration page.
Alexa and Thread-only lights
Nanoleaf says that a Thread-only device using Alexa needs a non-Amazon Thread border router under its stated integration limitation: “Amazon devices cannot act as standalone Thread Border Routers (TBRs) if utilizing Alexa services.” Nanoleaf says direct Matter connection avoids that extra Thread border router requirement for this integration. Check the current device-specific instructions before choosing a setup route.

Add a paired Matter light to another ecosystem
If the light is already paired with one Matter ecosystem, use Matter multi-admin sharing to add it to a second compatible ecosystem instead of treating it as a first-time pairing. Start the sharing or pairing-mode flow in the ecosystem where it is already set up, generate a code or QR code, then complete the new ecosystem’s pairing flow. Nanoleaf states that its Matter commissioning window lasts 15 minutes; complete the follow-on pairing within that window.
- Apple Home: Start with “Turn On Pairing Mode” in the Home app.
- Google Home: Use the linked Matter apps or services flow.
- Alexa: Open “Other assistants and apps,” then choose “Add another.”
Labels can change with app updates; use Nanoleaf’s current Matter multi-admin sharing guide if a screen differs.
If the Nanoleaf light does not appear
- Confirm the model and connection type. Make sure you are using the Matter flow only for a Matter-enabled product, or the Nanoleaf skill route when appropriate.
- Check controller support. Matter pairing needs a compatible controller; Thread pairing also needs Thread border-router support.
- Check the pairing window. Nanoleaf says direct Matter setup must begin within 15 minutes of powering on the light. Cycling power can reopen the window only if the device has not already been paired via Matter.
- Use sharing for an already paired Matter light. If it belongs to another ecosystem, start multi-admin sharing there rather than attempting first-time pairing.
Choose the setup route by weighing the light’s protocol, the controller and Thread hardware already in your home, the voice assistant and mobile ecosystem you prefer, whether you need one or multiple ecosystems, and which platform routines or Nanoleaf-specific features you use. Verify current compatibility and model availability for your region before buying additional hardware.
