In the clearest laboratory demonstration, a focused laser heats a magnetic film locally and creates a photothermal potential well; translating that hot spot moves or pins a magnetic skyrmion. A second, newer approach uses the phase and polarization structure of an optical-skyrmion beam. A 2026 study predicts rotation, skipping and trochoidal trajectories, but that work is micromagnetic simulation rather than a completed steering experiment.
What light-controlled skyrmion motion means
A magnetic skyrmion is a compact, topologically structured region of magnetization inside a magnetic film or multilayer. Its spin texture can be moved by magnetic fields, electrical currents, temperature gradients and other forces. In an optical-control experiment, the light does not usually push the skyrmion like a tiny bead in radiation pressure. Instead, the beam changes the skyrmion’s local energy landscape or couples to its magnetization through a structured optical field.

That distinction matters because two ideas are often described with the same phrase:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Photothermal manipulation: experimentally demonstrated. A focused laser produces a local temperature rise. The resulting temperature-dependent energy change forms a movable potential well that attracts, repels or pins a skyrmion as the beam is translated.
- Optical-skyrmion steering: currently a theoretical route in the cited 2026 work. A structured beam carries spatially varying phase, polarization, orbital angular momentum (OAM) and helicity. Micromagnetic calculations predict that these features can drive selected trajectories, but the result should not be presented as an achieved laboratory demonstration.
For a first experiment, photothermal control is therefore the practical starting point. Structured light is the programmable extension to build after the sample, microscope and tracking pipeline are reliable.

The demonstrated route: a focused photothermal potential
The strongest experimental evidence comes from a Nature Communications report published in 2025. Its setup used a magnetic film containing isolated skyrmions, optical imaging, a movable sample or beam, and magnetic-field control. The focused manipulation laser created a micrometre-scale thermal potential. When the potential moved relative to the film, the skyrmion followed it, remained pinned near it, or changed its trajectory according to the balance of thermal, magnetic and gyrotropic forces.
The published apparatus included these functional blocks:
| Subsystem | Role in the experiment | Details established by the cited work |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic film or device | Hosts isolated, stable skyrmions | The material, thickness and geometry determine the usable field and temperature window; they are not universal. |
| MOKE microscope | Images magnetization contrast and locates the skyrmion | Illumination for the cited measurements used a 530 nm LED. |
| Fast camera | Records the skyrmion position over time | An electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera was used in the cited experiment. |
| Focused manipulation laser | Creates the local photothermal energy landscape | The source does not establish a universal laser power, spot size, speed or temperature limit. |
| Piezoelectric translation stage | Moves the sample or beam in two dimensions with repeatable positioning | Translation sweeps the potential relative to the skyrmion. |
| Electromagnets | Set and maintain the magnetic state | The cited measurements used an out-of-plane field of 2.56 Oe; an in-plane field was used only for initial nucleation and then set to zero. |
| Trajectory-analysis software | Converts image sequences into positions, velocities and paths | TrackMate in ImageJ was used for trajectory analysis. |
The 2.56 Oe value is a condition of that particular material and geometry, not a recipe for every skyrmion-hosting film. Reproduce the field window for your own sample by mapping skyrmion creation, stability and annihilation before attempting optical transport.

Laboratory workflow, step by step
1. Establish a stable skyrmion state
Prepare the magnetic film or device and place it in a field and temperature regime where isolated skyrmions persist long enough to image and move. Confirm that the objects are individual skyrmions rather than labyrinth domains or unresolved clusters. Record the field history, sample temperature and nucleation procedure because skyrmion size and mobility can depend strongly on them.
In the cited experiment, an in-plane field assisted initial nucleation and was then set to zero. The out-of-plane measurement field was 2.56 Oe. Do not assume that either value transfers to a different composition, layer stack, thickness or device shape.
2. Align the MOKE microscope
Use magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy to obtain contrast from the magnetic texture. Illuminate the sample and focus the imaging path before turning on the manipulation beam. The cited setup used a 530 nm LED for illumination and an EMCCD camera for time-resolved imaging.

- Acquire a background frame with no skyrmion in the region of interest.
- Check that the skyrmion contrast remains visible at the intended camera frame rate.
- Measure the pixel size in the sample plane so later trajectories are expressed in physical units.
- Keep the imaging illumination and manipulation laser optically distinguishable enough that the camera does not confuse the two beams.
3. Add the focused manipulation beam
Focus the laser onto the magnetic film to create a localized temperature-dependent potential. The spot must be small enough to provide spatial selectivity, while the optical power and exposure remain within the sample’s safe thermal range. Because the cited source does not specify a universal power, spot diameter or temperature ceiling, determine those parameters experimentally for each film.
With the beam stationary, observe whether the skyrmion is attracted to the hot spot, repelled, or simply immobilized near it. This sign and strength of the interaction are material-dependent. A stationary-beam test is also the simplest way to detect drift caused by stage vibration, thermal gradients elsewhere in the sample or field instability.
4. Translate the potential in two dimensions
Use a piezoelectric translation stage to move either the sample or the focused beam. A two-axis stage lets you sweep the photothermal potential along programmed paths. Begin with a slow straight-line translation and increase the speed only after the skyrmion remains captured and trackable.
- Center one isolated skyrmion in the camera’s field of view.
- Place the manipulation spot at a known offset and hold it long enough to measure capture or pinning.
- Command a short displacement along one axis.
- Return the stage to its original position and check whether the skyrmion returns reproducibly.
- Repeat along the second axis, then test turns, pauses and closed loops.
The stage trajectory is the input; the skyrmion trajectory is the measured output. Keep both time-stamped so lag, following error and release events can be separated from genuine skyrmion dynamics.
5. Set the magnetic field with electromagnets
Electromagnets provide the out-of-plane and, when needed, in-plane components used to prepare or stabilize the magnetic state. Calibrate the field at the sample rather than relying only on a nominal coil current. During a transport sequence, keep the field constant unless the experiment explicitly studies field-driven changes.
Field changes can alter the skyrmion diameter, pinning landscape or survival probability. A trajectory recorded while the field is drifting is not directly comparable with one recorded at a fixed field.

6. Record and track the motion
Acquire a continuous MOKE movie while the stage moves. TrackMate in ImageJ can identify the skyrmion centroid frame by frame and export positions for analysis. Use the raw image sequence as the record; an automatically detected path should be reviewed against the video for missed frames, merged objects and false detections caused by laser glare.
- Convert camera pixels to distance using the measured sample-plane calibration.
- Use the camera timestamps, not the nominal stage command rate, when calculating velocity.
- Mark intervals in which the skyrmion is pinned, lost, annihilated or replaced by another object.
- Repeat each programmed path enough times to distinguish repeatability from a single favorable run.
7. Quantify capture, lag and release
Useful first metrics are capture probability, positional offset from the beam center, following lag, maximum stable translation speed for that specific setup, and the fraction of runs ending in annihilation or escape. These are empirical properties of the film, beam, field and stage combination. No universal speed or positional-accuracy value is established by the cited sources.
What actually drives the motion
Photothermal gradients
The focused beam changes the local temperature, and the skyrmion energy changes with temperature. A spatial temperature gradient therefore creates an effective force. Translating the beam translates the energy minimum or maximum. The skyrmion responds with a finite delay and may follow at an angle rather than directly along the stage path because magnetic skyrmions can exhibit gyrotropic, or Hall-like, motion.

Defects, edges and thickness variations create local pinning sites. A moving hot spot must overcome those sites without heating the film enough to destroy the skyrmion or change the magnetic phase. If a path is repeatable in one region but not another, map the sample rather than immediately changing the laser speed.
Optical phase and polarization
In the structured-light proposal, the field’s phase and polarization vary across the beam. Those spatial textures can couple to the magnetization differently at different positions. The Waseda University research release in 2026 summarized the idea as: “The phase and polarization structure of an optical skyrmion can be translated into the motion of a magnetic skyrmion.” That statement describes the proposed coupling, not a completed steering experiment.
Orbital and spin angular momentum
The 2026 Physical Review Letters abstract separates several contributions. OAM-related forces can produce azimuthal drift, while the OAM mode number changes the skyrmion Hall angle in the reported antiferromagnetic calculations. Spin-angular-momentum terms modify precession, and the calculated rotation direction can depend on frequency. These effects are predictions from the model and should be tested against measured trajectories rather than treated as established device behavior.

How to add optical-skyrmion control hardware
A structured-light experiment starts with the same magnetic sample, MOKE microscope, camera, field coils and trajectory software. Add a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) and polarization optics in the manipulation beam path.

Phase-only spatial light modulator
The SLM programs the beam’s phase profile. Its usable wavelength, clear aperture, diffraction efficiency, damage threshold and control software must match the manipulation laser. The optical design must also preserve the intended focus at the sample; a phase pattern that is correct at the SLM can be distorted by relay optics, aberrations or an incorrectly positioned pupil.
Polarization optics
Use polarizers, wave plates or equivalent components to set the input polarization and analyze the output state. Optical-skyrmion fields require control of spatial polarization texture, helicity and phase together, so verify the actual field at the sample rather than assuming the programmed pattern survives the microscope.
Model-to-measurement loop
- Define the programmed phase, polarization, OAM mode and frequency.
- Calculate the expected optical field at the sample plane, including the measured objective and relay optics.
- Run the micromagnetic model for the same material parameters, field and damping assumptions.
- Record MOKE trajectories while changing one optical parameter at a time.
- Compare rotation, skipping or trochoidal paths with the model, including direction, period and dependence on beam displacement.
A measured trajectory that merely circles the beam does not by itself prove optical-skyrmion coupling; photothermal forces, ordinary intensity gradients and stage motion must be controlled or independently measured.

Calibration and controls that prevent misleading results
Measure the thermal response
Record the sample temperature or a calibrated thermal proxy while changing beam power and dwell time. A trajectory that changes whenever the sample warms globally may be thermal drift rather than selective manipulation. Compare a focused spot with a defocused spot at matched total power to separate local gradients from average heating.

Run beam-off and field-only controls
Acquire movies with the manipulation beam blocked, with the beam stationary, and with the same field sequence but no programmed translation. These controls reveal natural skyrmion drift, field-induced motion and camera-stage vibration.
Check optical cross-talk
Laser scatter can change MOKE contrast or saturate an EMCCD. Add appropriate spectral filtering and verify that the detected centroid does not shift when only the imaging exposure is changed. For an SLM experiment, inspect the focal intensity and polarization pattern at low power before placing a fragile sample at the focus.
Troubleshooting common failure modes
The skyrmion does not move
- Confirm that the beam is actually focused on the magnetic layer, not the substrate or a cover layer.
- Check whether the local temperature change is too small to alter the skyrmion energy.
- Map pinning sites with a stationary-beam test.
- Verify that the field and temperature are inside the skyrmion-stability window.
The skyrmion escapes the beam
- Reduce the translation speed or increase the dwell time before moving.
- Check stage lag and command smoothing.
- Use a path that avoids strong pinning gradients and sample edges.
- Do not increase power blindly; excessive heating can deform or annihilate the skyrmion.
The skyrmion disappears
- Review the MOKE frames to distinguish annihilation from loss of contrast.
- Check for a field excursion, thermal overshoot or a focus shift.
- Repeat at lower exposure and with a shorter dwell.
- Record the exact field and thermal history before attempting the same sequence again.
The measured path looks rotational or trochoidal
First exclude stage backlash, beam ellipticity, static intensity rings and ordinary thermal gradients. Only after those controls should a structured-light interpretation be considered. In the 2026 model, rotation, skipping and trochoidal motion arise from distinct combinations of gradient, OAM and spin-angular-momentum contributions; a visual resemblance alone cannot identify the cause.
What the current evidence supports
You can build a credible light-controlled skyrmion experiment today with a magnetic film, MOKE microscope, EMCCD camera, focused manipulation laser, piezoelectric translation stage and electromagnets. The photothermal method is the established route: move the laser-induced potential and measure the skyrmion’s response. Use the cited 530 nm imaging LED and 2.56 Oe out-of-plane field only as reported conditions of that specific Nature Communications experiment, not as universal settings.
Optical-skyrmion steering is best treated as a design target. A phase-only SLM and polarization optics can generate the programmable fields needed to test the 2026 predictions, but the cited evidence does not establish laboratory steering, universal speeds, positional accuracy or a universal temperature limit. Those quantities must be measured for each material, geometry, optical power and control system.
