Once the control is added, it can be available from the Lock Screen when Control Center access while locked is enabled. A Home Lock Screen widget is useful for checking your home at a glance, while Control Center provides direct buttons for scenes and individual accessories.
What you can control without opening the Home app
Control Center can expose the Home actions you use most often. Apple’s examples include switching a light or group of lights on or off, starting playback on a HomePod, and locking a front door from an accessory tile. Depending on the accessory and the services it exposes to iOS, a tile may also let you change a supported light’s color or choose an input on a smart television.

These are not universal commands. iOS displays controls that the paired accessory supports, so two devices in the same category can present different actions. A simple plug may offer only on and off; a color-capable lamp may provide brightness and color controls; a lock may expose a lock action but not every setting available in the manufacturer’s app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe shortcut works only after the accessory has been added to Apple Home. Control Center does not discover unpaired devices, replace the manufacturer’s setup process, or turn an incompatible accessory into a HomeKit device.

Lock Screen widget or Control Center?
Apple provides two related but different ways to reach Home features quickly. The Home Lock Screen widget is an at-a-glance view of your home and a fast route into Home. Control Center is the better choice when you want a direct scene or accessory action with as few taps as possible.
| Access method | What it is best for | What appears | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home Lock Screen widget | Checking the home and opening Home quickly | A Home status or shortcut view selected for the Lock Screen | It is an at-a-glance entry point; the exact view depends on the Home setup and iOS version. |
| Control Center | Directly running a scene or operating a frequently used accessory | Home scenes and accessory tiles that you add | Available actions depend on each accessory’s supported services. |
If your goal is “turn on the hallway light” or “lock the front door” from a locked phone, configure the Control Center tile first. Add the widget as a complementary way to check status or open the Home app.
Requirements before you add a control
The accessory must already be in Apple Home
Pair the light, switch, lock, camera, fan, television, speaker, or other connected device with Apple Home before trying to place it in Control Center. Apple describes Home accessories as physical connected devices such as a ceiling fan, lamp, lock, or camera. If the device does not appear in the Home app, it cannot be selected as a Control Center accessory.
Compatibility is service-specific
HomeKit compatibility does not guarantee that every function appears in Control Center. iOS can expose only the services the accessory makes available through Apple Home. Check the device’s Home tile and its accessory details to see whether the required function—such as color control, media playback, input selection, or locking—is supported.
A home hub may be needed
Some Home features and remote operation require a home hub. Apple’s Home materials identify HomePod and Apple TV 4K as the hub paths in the Home control-center experience. Adaptive Lighting specifically requires a home hub such as an Apple TV 4K or HomePod speaker. If you only need local control while your iPhone and accessories are on the same network, a hub may not be necessary for every action; remote access and certain advanced features are different.

Matter devices still need to be added to Home
Apple Home supports Matter accessories. After a Matter accessory is added to Apple Home, Apple says it can be controlled in the Home app, with Siri, through Control Center, and in compatible third-party HomeKit apps. Matter branding alone is not enough: the individual model must be added successfully and expose the service you want to operate.
Add a Home scene or accessory to Control Center
Use Apple’s current iPhone flow to place a Home control in Control Center. The labels can vary slightly by iOS release, but the sequence is the same.
- Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Tap the Add button. This starts Control Center editing.
- Choose “Add a Control.” The control gallery appears.
- Select “Home Scene or Accessory.” This is the Home control type described in Apple’s iPhone guide.
- Choose the home. If you manage more than one home, select the home containing the scene or accessory.
- Choose a scene or accessory. Pick the individual device or the scene you want to run from Control Center.
- Finish editing and test the tile. Return to the normal Control Center view and tap the new control once. Confirm that the intended light, lock, speaker, or other device responds.
A scene can combine several actions, such as turning off a group of lights, while an accessory control targets one device or one supported service. Choose a scene when you want a repeatable room-wide result; choose an accessory when you need a single, precise action.
Make Control Center available from the Lock Screen
Adding a Home tile to Control Center does not automatically make it reachable while the iPhone is locked. iOS has a separate privacy setting that controls whether Control Center can be opened from the Lock Screen.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode on Face ID models, or Touch ID & Passcode on models with a Home button.
- Enter your passcode when prompted.
- In Allow Access When Locked, turn on Control Center.
- Lock the iPhone and test the gesture: swipe down from the upper-right on Face ID models or swipe up from the bottom on Home-button models.
Turning on Lock Screen access makes the Control Center surface reachable before authentication. Consider the security consequence before enabling it: anyone holding the phone may be able to trigger the controls you place there. A door lock, garage control, alarm-related scene, or other safety-sensitive accessory deserves more caution than a lamp.

Add a Home widget to the Lock Screen
The Home Lock Screen widget is intended for status at a glance and quick access to Home. To add it, wake the iPhone, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose the Lock Screen, and use the widget area to add Home. The exact widget picker labels can differ by iOS version and iPhone model.

Use a Control Center tile when the desired result is a direct command. They can coexist: the widget handles visibility, while Control Center handles the action.
Use the controls after setup
Lights and groups of lights
Open Control Center, locate the Home control, and tap the light or group tile to switch it on or off. A group tile applies the action to the grouped lights rather than requiring separate taps. If the tile exposes more options, open the accessory’s expanded controls to adjust a supported light’s color or another available property.
Scenes
Tap the scene control once to run its predefined actions. Scenes are useful for repeatable states such as an evening lighting arrangement because one control can coordinate several accessories. Review the scene in Home before placing it on the Lock Screen so you know exactly what a single tap will change.
HomePod playback
Apple lists starting music playback on a HomePod as an example of an accessory action available from a Home tile. The available media options depend on the HomePod and the services configured in Apple Home. If the playback action does not appear, check the speaker’s Home tile and supported services rather than assuming every speaker control is available in Control Center.

Smart locks
A compatible lock can expose a lock action from its accessory tile. Test the tile while the iPhone is unlocked first, then decide whether it is appropriate to expose that action from the Lock Screen. A lock command is a physical-security action; avoid adding it casually to a shared or easily accessible device.
Televisions and other devices
Some accessories provide specialized controls. Apple gives selecting a supported smart-TV input as an example. Other devices may expose only a subset of their functions. The tile’s available actions are the authoritative list for that installation.
Home hubs: HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K?
If you need remote operation or hub-dependent features, Apple documents two concrete paths: a HomePod, including HomePod mini, or an Apple TV 4K configured for the home. The right choice depends on equipment you already own and where the device can remain connected to your home network.
| Consideration | HomePod mini | Apple TV 4K |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Smart speaker and optional home hub | Streaming box and optional home hub |
| Best fit | Homes that want a compact voice-and-audio device in a central room | Homes that already use Apple TV for television and want the hub in the entertainment area |
| Placement | Place it where it can stay powered and maintain a reliable home-network connection | Place it near the television and network location where it normally operates |
| Home features | Supports hub-dependent Home features documented by Apple when configured for the home | Supports hub-dependent Home features documented by Apple when configured for the home |
| Current price and availability | Not stated in Apple’s cited Home-control instructions; check the current listing for your region | Not stated in Apple’s cited Home-control instructions; check the current listing for your region |
Choose based on the role you need, not on the assumption that one hub makes every accessory behave differently. Both options are intended to provide a home-resident device for features that cannot rely solely on the iPhone being present.
What happens when the iPhone is locked?
With Control Center allowed on the Lock Screen, the gesture opens the same Control Center surface before the iPhone is unlocked. The Home tile can then run the scene or accessory action you added. The device still has to be reachable through Apple Home, and the accessory must be online and able to accept the requested service.

If the tile is visible but the action does not complete, unlocking the phone and opening Home can help distinguish a Lock Screen-access problem from a connectivity or accessory problem. Do not assume that a visible tile proves the accessory is reachable; Control Center is a shortcut to the Home action, not a diagnostic display for every failure state.
Troubleshoot missing or ineffective Home controls
Home Scene or Accessory is not in the control gallery
- Confirm that the accessory or scene exists in the Home app.
- Check that you are editing Control Center on the iPhone signed in to the Apple account and home configuration you intend to use.
- Verify that the accessory is compatible with Apple Home and has completed pairing.
- If it is a Matter device, confirm that the Matter setup was completed in Apple Home rather than only in another controller’s app.
The tile appears, but the expected action is missing
- Open the accessory in Home and review the services it exposes.
- Check whether the function is supported by that model; a generic category label does not guarantee color, media, input, or lock controls.
- For a multi-function device, try the accessory’s expanded tile rather than the compact Control Center button.
Control Center will not open while the phone is locked
- Return to Settings and check the Allow Access When Locked section under Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
- Turn on Control Center, lock the iPhone, and test the correct edge gesture for your model.
- If the setting is intentionally disabled for security, unlock the phone before using the Home control.
The command works at home but not remotely
- Check whether your home has a configured home hub.
- Verify that the hub device is powered, connected to the home network, and associated with the intended home.
- Remember that some Home features, including Adaptive Lighting, specifically require a home hub such as Apple TV 4K or HomePod speakers.
- Test the same accessory in the Home app to determine whether the issue affects Home generally or only the Control Center shortcut.
A lock or scene behaves unexpectedly
- Open the scene in Home and inspect every included accessory and action.
- Remove and recreate the Control Center tile if it points to an old scene or an accessory that was replaced.
- Keep security-sensitive actions off the Lock Screen unless the convenience is worth the risk of unauthenticated access to the control surface.
Design a useful and safe Control Center layout
Start with actions you perform frequently and can verify quickly. A practical arrangement might include one lighting scene, one individual light or group, and a media control for a HomePod. Add a lock only after testing the behavior and considering who can reach the iPhone while it is locked.
- Use scenes for routines: one tap can apply a known combination of states.
- Use individual accessories for precision: a single light or lock is easier to understand than an unfamiliar scene.
- Keep names unambiguous: distinguish rooms and devices so a tile’s label is clear at a glance.
- Test after changes: run each tile while unlocked, then test the Lock Screen path if you enabled it.
- Review shared access: anyone who can operate the iPhone while locked may be able to use the controls you expose.
Remote control, local control, and privacy
There are three separate questions behind a quick Home action: whether the iPhone can open the control surface, whether Apple Home can reach the accessory, and whether the accessory supports the requested service. Lock Screen access answers only the first question. A home hub helps with features and remote operation, but it does not change the accessory’s compatibility or service list.

For privacy and physical safety, expose the minimum necessary controls. A lamp scene is generally lower risk than a door-lock command. If your household shares devices, agree on which controls should remain behind the iPhone passcode. You can leave Control Center available for convenience while omitting sensitive Home tiles.
Quick setup checklist
- Pair the accessory with Apple Home and confirm it responds in the Home app.
- Check the device’s supported Home services for the action you want.
- Decide whether you need a home hub for remote operation or a feature such as Adaptive Lighting.
- Open Control Center and tap Add, then Add a Control, then Home Scene or Accessory.
- Select the correct home and choose the scene or accessory.
- Run the control while the iPhone is unlocked.
- If you want Lock Screen access, enable Control Center under Allow Access When Locked in passcode settings.
- Lock the iPhone and test the gesture and the resulting action.
- Add a Home Lock Screen widget separately if you also want at-a-glance status or a quick route into Home.
Bottom line
Add the Home scene or accessory through Control Center’s Add a Control flow, then enable Control Center under your passcode settings if you want to reach it from the Lock Screen. The Home widget is for quick status and entry into Home; Control Center is for direct actions. Pair the accessory first, verify its supported services, and use a configured HomePod or Apple TV 4K home hub when remote access or a hub-dependent feature requires one.
