Google Photos lets you manage its face-clustering feature, called Face Groups, from settings. Leave it enabled if you want to name people, search by those names, and correct individual mistakes; disable it only when you want to remove face-group data from the account. The controls and menu wording differ slightly between the web app and Android, and Google says the feature is not available for every region, domain, or account type.
This guide shows the exact controls, how to label yourself for a personalized me search, how to remove a wrongly grouped photo without deleting it, and what happens to your face groups and labels when you switch the feature off.

What Face Groups does in Google Photos
Face Groups uses automated analysis to estimate which faces look alike and place likely matches into groups under People and pets. Google describes the process as creating numerical face models and comparing facial similarity. When a face is not clearly visible, grouping can also consider other characteristics, such as photos taken close together in time or similarities in clothing. As a result, a group is a prediction, not a verified identity record, and suggestions can be wrong.

That is a qualification from Google rather than a universal legal classification; local law determines how biometric information is defined and regulated. The feature is also subject to availability limits by geographic region, Google domain, and account type.

Face Groups is separate from the photo files in your library. A face group is an organizing layer that helps Google Photos find related images. Removing one image from a group therefore has a different effect from disabling Face Groups for the account.
Turn Face Groups on or off
On a computer
Use the Google Photos settings page in a desktop browser:
- Open Google Photos settings.
- Expand Group similar faces.
- Use the Face Groups switch to turn the feature on or off.
Google’s computer instructions are documented in Set up & manage your face groups. If the section or switch is missing, the account may be in a region, domain, or account category where Face Groups is not offered. A missing control is not necessarily a browser fault.

The exact menu name can vary with the Google Photos app version. In general:
- Open the Google Photos app and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Photos settings.
- Look under Privacy or Preferences for Group similar faces.
- Turn Face Groups on or off.
Google’s Android-specific instructions are at Set up and manage your face groups. The wording and location can change between app releases, but the setting is still the one labeled Group similar faces when the account supports it.

What the switch changes
Turning the feature on allows Google Photos to create and maintain face groups, labels, and the models used to make those groupings. Turning it off is an account-wide action, not a pause for one album or one device. Before using it as a troubleshooting step, read the data consequences in the next section.
What happens when you disable Face Groups
Google states that switching off Face Groups deletes the face groups in the account, the face models used to create those groups, and the face labels you created. Its official wording is: “If you turn off ‘Face Groups,’ you delete: Your face groups, Face models used to create those face groups, Face labels you created.” The statement appears in Google’s computer help documentation at Google Photos Help.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The deletion applies to the grouping data, not to the underlying photos and videos in your library. Your media remains in Google Photos, but the organization that let you browse it by person and the labels you assigned are removed. Because this is broader than correcting a single result, disabling the feature is appropriate only when you accept losing that face-group organization.
| Choice | Scope of change | Effect on personalized face search | Effect on library photos and videos | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Face Groups on and correct a result | One photo, one label, or a selected group relationship | Remains available, including a me search after you label the correct group |
The media item stays in the library | A group contains an occasional wrong image or needs a better name |
| Turn Face Groups off | All face groups, face models, and labels created in the account are deleted | Face-group browsing and label-based face search are no longer available while the feature is off | Photos and videos are not deleted by this switch | You do not want face grouping or want to remove its stored grouping data |
There is no separate setting in the documented workflow that removes only the numerical models while preserving every existing group and label. If your concern is one mistaken match, use the per-photo correction tools instead of the account-wide switch.
Name people and enable personalized search for yourself
Label a face group
Once Face Groups is enabled, open People and pets in Google Photos and select a face group. Add a name or nickname when prompted. The label becomes a searchable term, so searching for that name can return photos associated with the group. Google’s instructions for assigning a label are in Label your face group.

- Open Google Photos and go to People and pets.
- Choose the group that represents the person.
- Select the option to add a name or nickname.
- Enter the label and save it.
A nickname is useful when you want a private shorthand or when several people share a formal name. The label is an organizational aid inside your Google Photos account; it does not change the names of files stored on your device.
Label the correct group as Me
For personalized search, select the face group that actually represents you and label it Me. Google says that, after this label is assigned, you can search for me to find photos of yourself. The relevant group must be your own; assigning Me to another person’s group will make the personalized result inaccurate.
Use the same People and pets area to review the group before applying the label. If there are several groups that appear to be you, compare multiple images and choose the group with the most consistent matches. Do not merge groups merely because both contain a few similar-looking photos; a merge combines the group contents, and Google’s desktop guidance says a completed merge cannot be undone.
Search after labeling
After saving a label, use the Google Photos search field and enter the name or me. Search results depend on the current group data, so a newly labeled person may not immediately produce a perfect set of results. Continue correcting individual mismatches rather than disabling the feature if you want the personalized search to remain available.
Remove a photo from the wrong face group
A wrongly grouped photo can be corrected without deleting the original item. Open the relevant face group, select the photo or video that does not belong, and use the option to remove it from that group. Google says this removes the result from the face grouping but does not delete the photo or video from your library.

Use removal for an isolated mistake
Removal is the narrowest fix when one image is incorrect. It is suitable when, for example, a person is wearing a mask, the image is blurry, or a background resemblance caused the wrong match. The photo remains available through the main Photos timeline, albums, device folders, and other searches that still apply to it.
Change or remove a group label
If the photos in a group are right but the name is wrong, edit the group’s label instead of removing every image. You can also remove the label when you no longer want that person’s name attached to the group. Changing a label affects how you search for the group; it does not rename the underlying image files.
Review merge suggestions carefully
Google Photos can suggest that two face groups represent the same person. Check both groups before accepting. A false merge can put two people’s images together, and Google’s computer instructions state that a completed merge cannot be undone. If you are uncertain, leave the groups separate and remove only the clearly wrong photos.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a photo can appear in the wrong group
Face grouping is probabilistic. Similar facial features, low resolution, unusual lighting, partial faces, reflections, and crowded scenes can all make a match less reliable. Google also says that grouping may use contextual signals such as nearby capture dates or similar clothing when a face is not visible. That explains why a photo can be suggested for a group even when you cannot see a clear face in the image.
These contextual matches are not proof that the person is present. Treat them as suggestions to review. Removing the image from the group supplies a more precise correction than turning off the entire feature, because it preserves the rest of your labels and personalized search.
Best Value
Privacy, inactivity, and retention
Face Groups creates data in addition to the original photos: groups, labels, and the face models used to generate likely matches. Google’s qualification that models may count as biometric data in some jurisdictions is important if you share an account, manage photos for children or clients, or operate under organizational privacy rules. Decide whether the convenience of person-based search fits your account’s privacy requirements.
Google’s Face Groups retention policy says Face Groups content is deleted after more than two years of Google Photos inactivity. That policy concerns the Face Groups content itself. It does not say that your entire photo library is erased solely because you have not used the face-group feature.
Disabling Face Groups is the direct control for deleting the groups, models, and labels described above. Removing a single result is not equivalent: it changes that group membership while leaving the library item intact.

The Face Groups setting is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account whose photos you manage.
- On the web, open photos.google.com/settings directly and expand Group similar faces.
- On Android, check both Privacy and Preferences in Photos settings because menu placement varies by app version.
- If the control is absent in both places, check availability assumptions: Google says Face Groups is not offered in every region, domain, or account type.
The People and pets section is empty
Face groups must be available for the account and enabled before Google Photos can present them. If the switch is on but a particular person is not shown, review the available groups and wait for the app to identify more images through normal photo processing. Do not assume that every face in the library will become a separate group or that every image will be assigned.
The wrong person is repeatedly suggested
- Open the affected face group.
- Remove each clearly incorrect photo or video from that group.
- Check the group label and change it if the name is inaccurate.
- Reject or ignore a merge suggestion when the two groups are not certainly the same person.
This sequence limits changes to the bad matches. Use the global off switch only if you want all face-group data removed.
The me search returns someone else
Return to People and pets and inspect which group carries the Me label. If it is attached to the wrong group, correct the label and remove any mistaken photos from your own group. The personalized term works from the group labeled Me; it is not a general search for every person who resembles you.
You disabled Face Groups by mistake
Because Google says disabling deletes the groups, models, and labels, do not treat the switch as a reversible test. Your photos and videos remain in the library, but the prior face-group organization is not preserved by the documented setting. If you later enable Face Groups, Google’s help pages do not promise restoration of the former labels or group arrangements, so make the decision with that limitation in mind.
Quick Recap
A safe workflow for managing face search
- Check availability. Look for Group similar faces on the web or in Android settings.
- Enable the feature only if its data use suits you. Face Groups creates models and labels to support person-based organization.
- Review groups before naming them. Verify several images rather than trusting a single suggestion.
- Label people with names or nicknames. Use labels you can remember and search consistently.
- Assign Me carefully. Choose your own group so the
mesearch reflects your photos. - Correct narrowly. Remove individual wrong results and edit labels; avoid a global reset for a local error.
- Decline uncertain merges. Google says completed merges cannot be undone on desktop.
- Use the off switch deliberately. It deletes all face groups, face models, and labels created in the account, although it does not delete the library’s photos or videos.
Key takeaways
- Face Groups is controlled through Group similar faces in Google Photos settings, with slightly different paths on desktop and Android.
- Naming a group makes it searchable by that label; labeling your own group Me enables a
mesearch. - Removing a wrong result changes group membership without deleting the underlying photo or video.
- Turning Face Groups off is an account-wide deletion of groups, face models, and labels, not a temporary pause for one image.
- Google says grouping can use contextual clues when a face is not visible and that availability varies by region, domain, and account type.
