How to Control Duckweed and Wolffia Overgrowth in a Pond or Aquarium

In an outdoor pond, start by identifying the floating plant, then rake, seine, or skim manageable growth with a fine-mesh net and remove the collected plants from the pond’s vicinity. Repeat as needed; surface-disturbing aeration can help gather growth at the edges for collection. Herbicides require a product labeled for the identified plant and site, and a large amount of dying vegetation can deplete oxygen and harm fish. Pond treatments should not be transferred to an aquarium: the sources cited here do not establish aquarium-specific procedures.

Identify the plant before choosing a control method

Small green plants on the water surface are not necessarily all the same. Mississippi State Extension identifies watermeal as Wolffia spp. and duckweed as Lemna spp.; duckweed may grow alongside watermeal or mosquitofern (Azolla). Alabama Cooperative Extension also groups these among similar-looking floating aquatic vegetation. Because recommendations can differ, identify the plant rather than treating every surface mat as interchangeable. Mississippi State Extension’s watermeal guidance and Alabama Cooperative Extension’s identification and management guidance provide starting points.

For a pond, remove accessible growth early and repeat

Physical removal exports plant material instead of leaving it to decay in the water. Texas A&M AgriLife says duckweed can be raked or seined from the surface. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends regular removal as growth appears, using a fine-mesh dip net; a long-handled swimming-pool net can also work. Texas A&M AgriLife’s duckweed guidance and UC ANR’s aquatic weed guidance describe these approaches.

  1. Choose a suitable net or rake. A fine-mesh net can catch small floating plants; a long-handled net helps reach across the pond.
  2. Skim, rake, or seine the surface. Collect what is accessible without spreading it to other water.
  3. Take the plants away from the pond. Penn State Extension advises disposing of removed material away from the water so wind or runoff cannot carry it back.
  4. Check again and repeat. These plants can grow rapidly, so a single cleanup may not prevent new surface growth. Penn State Extension’s duckweed and watermeal guidance covers collection and disposal.

Use aeration to make collection easier, not as a cure

Penn State Extension says aerators that disturb the pond surface can help limit duckweed and watermeal growth to pond edges, where a net or seine can reach it. Treat this as a collection aid, not a proven way to eradicate the plants. The practical value is greatest when you can follow it with physical removal.

Sepetrel Pool Skimmer Net with Pole, Ultra-Fine Mesh, 72-Inch Total Length
  • Ultra-Fine Nylon Mesh: This pool skimmer net collects small floating debris and fine particles during routine surface cleaning. Choose this fine-mesh version when you need to pick up smaller debris rather than leaves alone.
  • Adjustable 40–72 Inch Total Length: Adjust the assembled net and pole from 40 to 72 inches for close-up skimming or a longer reach. Suitable for routine cleaning of inground and above-ground swimming pools, ponds, spas and hot tubs.
  • Secure Latching Connection: The locking mechanism helps keep the net head attached to the included pole and reduces movement at the connection during use. Check that the latch is fully engaged before skimming.
  • Inclined Scoop Edge: The angled front lip helps guide leaves and loose surface debris into the mesh bag. Use this pool scoop net for regular skimming around pool edges and other accessible areas.
  • Corrugated Aluminum Pole: The thickened aluminum pole features a textured surface for a comfortable grip during pool maintenance. Supplied with a matching net head and pole; the pole uses a non-standard design, so check compatibility before pairing it with other accessories.

Biological controls have important limits

Fish and ducks are sometimes discussed as ways to reduce duckweed, but the extension guidance does not support treating them as dependable, universal solutions.

  • Tilapia: Texas A&M AgriLife notes that tilapia consume duckweed, but they are warm-water fish and legal stocking requirements vary.
  • Ducks: Texas A&M says ducks eat duckweed but seldom control it.
  • Grass carp: Penn State says they may provide some duckweed control, but may not eat enough to keep it controlled and may consume submerged vegetation first. It reports no biological control for watermeal.

Before adding animals, check local rules and consider the effect on the pond’s other vegetation and ecology. See Texas A&M AgriLife and Penn State Extension for the limits described for these options.

Consider herbicides only with site-specific, label-led guidance

Herbicide choice depends on the correctly identified plant, the exact product formulation, pond dimensions, water uses, application conditions, and local registration. Extension sources discuss different active ingredients and treatment approaches, but those recommendations are not interchangeable products or a universal dosing recipe. Texas A&M AgriLife lists several ingredients used for duckweed control, including carfentrazone, diquat, fluridone, flumioxazin, and penoxsulam. Other extension guidance discusses product-specific watermeal recommendations, contact versus systemic products, and spot versus whole-pond treatment. Start with the current product label and consult local extension staff or a qualified aquatic-plant professional before treating.

A key risk is oxygen depletion: as treated plants die and decompose, that decay can lower dissolved oxygen and cause fish losses. Some extension guidance discusses staged treatment and aeration as possible aids, but aeration does not guarantee safety. Avoid treating a large plant mass without understanding the site-specific risks and label requirements. Texas A&M AgriLife, Penn State Extension, and Oklahoma State University Extension’s aquatic herbicide guidance discuss treatment options and considerations. Mississippi State Extension’s watermeal guidance addresses particular formulations. Product labels and local rules govern what can be used at a specific pond.

Aquarium control needs aquarium-specific advice

The cited sources address ponds, lakes, and outdoor aquatic-plant management; they do not establish safe procedures for a stocked aquarium or compatibility with aquarium animals, filtration, and water chemistry. Do not apply pond herbicide directions to an aquarium on the basis of these sources. Seek aquarium-specific guidance for your setup rather than assuming pond nets or treatments are suitable.
