Change the keyboard backlight brightness
Find the correct keys
Look along the top row for the symbols showing a keyboard with a light, or for the keyboard-backlight decrease and increase icons. Google lists these separately from the neighboring display-brightness icons. The display keys usually show a sun symbol; pressing them changes the screen and will not raise the light under the keys.
Some Chromebooks have no backlight keys because the keyboard has no backlight, while others may have a backlight without a dedicated control. If the symbols are absent, use the documentation for the exact Chromebook model rather than assuming a standard shortcut.
Adjust the light
- Locate the keyboard-backlight decrease and increase keys on the top row.
- Press the increase key repeatedly until the keys are comfortable to read.
- Press the decrease key to reduce the light or reach the lowest available level.
- If nothing changes, test the opposite key once. A control at its upper or lower limit can appear unresponsive.
The adjustment is immediate; there is no separate Save button. If the keyboard light changes briefly and then turns off, check Battery Saver before treating the behavior as a hardware fault.
Choose a custom RGB keyboard color
Color selection is available only when the Chromebook has the supported RGB keyboard hardware and ChromeOS exposes the control for that configuration. The setting is not a universal feature of every Chromebook.
Use the Wallpaper and style menu
- Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Under Wallpaper and style, select Set your wallpaper & style.

If Keyboard backlight is missing
- The keyboard may have single-color illumination rather than RGB hardware.
- The particular configuration may not support the ChromeOS color picker.
- The model may be listed alongside gaming Chromebooks but still have a different keyboard option.
- The keyboard may not have backlighting at all.
Do not interpret a missing menu as proof that ChromeOS is malfunctioning. First confirm the keyboard specification for the exact model and configuration. A product family can include versions with different keyboards.

Can you turn Chromebook keyboard lights into animations?
Google’s documented controls cover changing keyboard-backlight brightness and selecting an RGB color. The cited help pages do not provide a ChromeOS setting for animated effects, moving color patterns, per-zone animation, or a universal lighting utility.
That is a limit of the documented guidance, not a claim that no manufacturer could ever offer an additional feature. Battery Saver can switch off the keyboard light
Battery Saver changes lighting behavior to conserve power. Google says it lowers display brightness and turns off the keyboard backlight. This can make the keyboard appear broken even though the lighting control itself is working.
Check the Battery Saver setting
- Select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select System preferences.
- Select Power.
- Review the Battery Saver setting and turn it off if you need the keyboard backlight while running on battery.
Battery Saver is unavailable while the Chromebook is charging, and Google says it turns off automatically when the Chromebook is plugged in. How to verify your exact configuration
Model names alone are not always enough. Check the full model number, region, keyboard language, and listed keyboard specification. A manufacturer can sell one family with multiple keyboard options, so two units carrying a similar name may expose different controls.
