How to Control Audio in Chrome: Mute Tabs, Manage Sound, and Adjust Volume

Chrome does not document a slider for setting the volume of one tab independently. Its built-in audio tools let you mute a site, manage sound permissions, and control playback from another tab. If you need a tab to stay audible at a lower level, Chrome’s documented controls do not provide that adjustment; a third-party extension may, but it needs careful vetting.

What Chrome’s audio controls can—and cannot—do

Google’s Chrome Help describes Media control as a way to “Control music, video, or anything that plays sound in a Chrome tab.” The documented actions are playback-focused: pause, skip to the next item, or return to the tab playing media. They do not include an individual-tab loudness slider. Google’s Media control and sound-permission instructions also cover sound permissions, which determine whether sites may play sound rather than how loud a particular tab is.

  • Mute a tab or site: silence its audio; this is not a lower volume setting.
  • Sound permission: allow or block sound from sites.
  • Media control: operate playback without switching to the tab.
  • Extension: a possible route to per-tab level adjustment, but one that requires checking the current listing and permissions.

The built-in documentation does not promise independent volume levels for individual tabs. Site muting or sound permissions may apply to a site across its tabs, so they may not match a request to lower just one tab while leaving it audible.

Mute or unmute a noisy tab

On desktop Chrome, right-click the tab and choose the available mute action. To restore audio, right-click it again and choose the corresponding unmute action. Google also documents selecting multiple tabs and applying bulk actions in its computer tab-management guide. Menu wording and availability can vary by Chrome version and platform.

Control playback without finding the tab

When media is playing, open Media control near the top right of Chrome. Use the controls Google documents to pause, move to the next item, or return to the tab that is playing. Media control is useful for operating playback from elsewhere in the browser, but it does not set that tab’s volume.

Change whether sites can play sound

On computer Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Sound to choose the default sound permission. This controls whether sites may play audio; it is not a per-tab loudness control. Google’s sound-permission help documents this settings path.

When an extension may be worth considering

A Chrome Community discussion from September 2020 suggested extensions as a way to adjust an individual tab’s level, but it does not establish that any named extension is still available, safe, or functional. Do not treat old forum recommendations as current endorsements. If you consider an extension, check its live Chrome Web Store listing, developer identity, recent maintenance, and requested permissions.

Google advises users to install only extensions they trust and explains that extensions may request permission to access site data. Review those permissions and use Chrome’s extension controls to manage site access; see Google’s extension installation and management guidance. If your goal is simply to stop a page from making noise, try the built-in mute action or sound settings first.
