How to Contribute Your First Patch to WordPress Core

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical path is: set up a local WordPress trunk checkout, find an existing issue in Trac, make one focused change, test it, refresh your work against current trunk, generate a .diff or .patch, and attach that file to the Trac ticket. GitHub can make branching and review easier, but it does not replace Trac or become WordPress core’s merge destination.

This workflow follows the official Make WordPress Core handbook, whose pages were accessed on October 17, 2026. Repository procedures and onboarding requirements can change, so check the current handbook when you begin.

What a first WordPress core patch actually is

A core patch is a reviewable file that records changes to the WordPress source code. It may add, change, or remove lines, and another contributor can apply it to a codebase for testing. You do not need commit access to propose one: the Make WordPress Core handbook states that anyone can suggest a change as a patch, while only a committer can change the central codebase.

Your first contribution should have a narrow purpose. A small bug fix, a precise enhancement, a test that exposes a regression, or a documentation correction is easier to review than a broad cleanup mixed with unrelated formatting changes. The goal is to make the problem, the solution, and the evidence easy for another developer to verify.

The complete workflow at a glance

  1. Install a local WordPress development environment and check out current trunk.
  2. Search Trac for an existing ticket before creating anything new.
  3. Choose a focused ticket and confirm its component and reported behavior.
  4. Work from the official SVN repository or its official Git mirror.
  5. Change the smallest relevant set of files and follow WordPress coding standards.
  6. Run the relevant tests and record exactly what you ran.
  7. Update your checkout to the latest trunk before producing the patch.
  8. Generate a .diff or .patch from the repository root.
  9. Attach the file to the matching Trac ticket with a concise explanation, testing notes, and screenshots when a user interface is involved.
  10. Respond to review, refresh the patch when trunk moves, and upload a new version when necessary.

Prepare your local development environment

The onboarding guidance identifies two essentials: a local development environment and a checkout of WordPress trunk. Your environment needs to run WordPress locally and provide the tools required by the component you are changing. The exact operating-system packages and setup instructions vary, so use the current Core handbook instructions for your platform rather than copying a setup intended for a different release.

Use trunk, not a released package

Trunk is the actively developed code line. A released tag represents an older snapshot and can make a patch appear correct against code that has already changed. Start from current trunk, and update again immediately before creating your final diff. This matters even for a small edit: another commit may have changed the same lines, moved a test, or altered an API while you were working.

Verify that the checkout is usable before editing

  • Open the local site and confirm that WordPress loads normally.
  • Confirm that the checkout is the development trunk, not a downloaded release archive.
  • Make sure your repository client can report status and produce a diff.
  • Run the narrow test or development command you expect to use once, so an environment failure is not confused with a defect in your patch.
  • Keep a separate working copy for each unrelated ticket; mixing tickets makes review and later troubleshooting harder.

Find a ticket before you write code

Search WordPress Trac first. The project explicitly expects contributors to check existing reports so duplicate tickets do not fragment discussion, testing, and ownership. Search by error message, affected feature, component, and likely keywords. Read the ticket history, attachments, comments, and current status before deciding that the problem is still open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a workable first issue

  • Clear behavior: You can describe what happens, what should happen, and how to reproduce it.
  • Defined component: The ticket identifies the area of core that owns the behavior, or you can determine that from the surrounding code.
  • Limited scope: The change can be reviewed without redesigning several unrelated subsystems.
  • Current relevance: The report has not already been fixed, closed, or superseded by another ticket.
  • Testability: You can exercise the affected behavior locally and explain the result.

If a matching ticket exists, work there instead of opening a duplicate. If no ticket exists, create one only after searching carefully and gathering a reproducible description. Keep the new report focused enough that a patch can address it without guessing at the intended outcome.

Read the ticket as a contract

Before editing, write down the ticket’s expected result, affected component, reproduction steps, and any constraints already discussed. Check whether a patch or test has already been attached. If another contributor is actively working on it, ask in the ticket before producing competing work. Your patch description should answer the same questions the ticket asks: what was wrong, what changed, and how you verified it.

Choose SVN, Git, or GitHub deliberately

WordPress development happens through official SVN and Git repositories. SVN is the canonical repository; the official Git repositories are mirrors intended to help contributors who prefer Git’s local branching and diff tools. GitHub can provide a convenient review surface, but a pull request does not replace the Trac ticket and is not the destination where WordPress core is merged.

Option What it is good for What it does not change Submission artifact
SVN Following the project’s native repository model and producing a diff directly from the canonical checkout You still need a matching Trac ticket and local testing A .diff or .patch attached to Trac
Official Git mirror Using branches, familiar Git history, and local diff tools The mirror does not turn GitHub into WordPress’s merge destination An equivalent patch or diff attached to Trac
GitHub Optional collaboration and code review around a Git branch A pull request without Trac association is incomplete; Trac remains part of the project workflow The reviewable patch remains associated with the Trac ticket

For a first contribution, choose the tool you can operate reliably. SVN minimizes translation between your checkout and the project’s canonical model. Git can be more comfortable if you already understand branches and rebasing, but you must still produce a patch that reviewers can apply and find the corresponding Trac discussion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up a clean working copy

SVN workflow

  1. Check out WordPress trunk using the official repository instructions.
  2. Enter the checkout and confirm that the repository reports a clean or understood status.
  3. Record the Trac ticket number in your notes and, if you use a branch or local label, include that number so the work remains identifiable.
  4. Do not make unrelated formatting or refactoring changes in the same working copy.

The handbook’s patch example assumes you are at the SVN repository root. The root matters because the generated file must include the paths reviewers need to apply the change.

Git workflow

  1. Fork or clone the official Git mirror according to the current contributor instructions.
  2. Create a branch named or annotated with the Trac ticket number.
  3. Keep the branch limited to that ticket, and update it from the mirror’s current trunk before finalizing the patch.
  4. If you use GitHub for discussion, reference the Trac ticket in the branch and pull-request description; do not let the pull request become the only record of the change.

The exact clone, remote, and update commands depend on the current repository instructions. Use those commands rather than an old blog post, because repository integrations and branch names can change.

Make a focused change that fits WordPress conventions

Start with the smallest code path that explains the ticket. Inspect neighboring functions, existing tests, and established patterns before introducing a new abstraction. A patch that changes one behavior is easier to review, backport, and revise than one that also renames variables, reformats an entire file, or updates unrelated comments.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Follow coding standards

  • Match the style already used in the component, including naming, spacing, documentation, and control-flow conventions.
  • Keep comments focused on intent or non-obvious constraints; do not narrate every line.
  • Preserve backward compatibility unless the ticket explicitly calls for a breaking change and the project has agreed to it.
  • Remove temporary debugging output and local-only configuration before generating the patch.
  • Review the final diff for accidental whitespace churn, generated files, credentials, and unrelated edits.

Add or update tests when appropriate

A behavior change should normally have a test that fails before the fix and passes after it, when the component’s test structure makes that practical. If the ticket concerns a user-interface change, test the behavior in the local site and include a before-and-after screenshot when it helps reviewers see the result. Do not claim that a test suite passed unless you actually ran it; list the command or targeted test and its outcome in the Trac comment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the patch locally

Testing is evidence, not a formality. Reproduce the original problem first, apply your change, and repeat the same steps. Then check nearby behavior that could be affected by the edit.

A useful test record

  • Environment: operating system, local server stack, PHP and database versions when they affect the result, and the WordPress trunk revision you used.
  • Reproduction: the precise steps or test case that demonstrated the original issue.
  • Verification: the same steps after the change, with the observed result.
  • Regression checks: related paths that you exercised because the changed code is shared.
  • Automated tests: the exact targeted test or command you ran and whether it passed.

Keep failed experiments out of the success claim. If a test cannot run because of an environment problem, say so and explain what you did verify. Reviewers can then distinguish an untested area from a failing implementation.

Refresh trunk before generating the patch

WordPress trunk moves continuously. The Core handbook warns that an older patch can become stale or stop applying cleanly as other commits land. Update your checkout after your local testing and resolve any conflicts before producing the file you will upload.

Why timing matters

  • A file path may have moved.
  • The surrounding code may have changed enough that your context no longer matches.
  • A test may have been renamed or expanded.
  • Another fix may have addressed part of the same problem.

After updating, rerun the tests that justify your submission. A patch generated before the update is not the same evidence as a patch generated from current trunk.

Generate a reviewable diff or patch

From the SVN repository root, the handbook gives this example:

svn diff > 00000.diff

Use the ticket number or another clear identifier in the filename when the project’s current conventions allow it. Git users can create an equivalent diff from their branch using the official Git workflow. The important properties are that the file contains only the intended change, includes the correct repository paths, and can be applied to a current checkout for testing.

Inspect the file before uploading

  1. Open the diff as text and confirm that every changed hunk belongs to the ticket.
  2. Check that new files are included and that deleted files are represented correctly.
  3. Look for accidental editor metadata, generated assets, credentials, and line-ending-only changes.
  4. Confirm that the patch was produced after the final trunk update and test run.
  5. Use a new version label when revising an uploaded patch so reviewers can tell which file is current.

A patch is not a screenshot of your editor or a link to a private branch. It is the portable artifact a committer or reviewer can apply to a codebase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Attach the patch to the Trac ticket

  1. Open the existing Trac ticket for the issue you addressed.
  2. Upload the .diff or .patch file using the ticket’s attachment control.
  3. Write a concise comment explaining the problem, the approach, and the files or component affected.
  4. List the local environment and tests you actually ran, including failures or limitations.
  5. Add screenshots for visual changes when they clarify the result; annotate what each image demonstrates.
  6. State whether the patch is ready for review and identify any question on which you need guidance.

Keep the ticket as the authoritative conversation. If you also open a GitHub pull request, link it to the Trac ticket and repeat the essential testing information there, but do not remove the patch or its explanation from Trac.

A concise ticket comment structure

  • Problem: one or two sentences describing the reproducible behavior.
  • Change: what the patch does and why that approach fits the component.
  • Testing: environment, commands or test cases, and results.
  • Visual evidence: screenshots or a note that none are needed.
  • Open questions: decisions that require maintainer input.

Handle review and patch revisions

Submitting a patch starts a review process; it does not guarantee acceptance or a fixed decision date. A reviewer may request a smaller scope, different naming, additional tests, documentation, or a different implementation. Treat comments as requirements to resolve on the ticket rather than as a reason to create a separate, disconnected patch.

When trunk has moved

  1. Update your working copy or branch to the current trunk.
  2. Reapply or rebase your change according to the repository workflow you chose.
  3. Resolve conflicts deliberately, checking that the ticket’s behavior is still the one being fixed.
  4. Rerun the relevant tests.
  5. Generate a new diff or patch and upload it as the next version.
  6. Explain what changed between versions so reviewers do not have to rediscover the differences.

Do not silently replace an attachment while leaving the ticket’s discussion ambiguous. Versioned uploads and a short change note preserve a usable review history.

Common first-patch mistakes and fixes

Mistake Why it causes trouble Fix
Working from a released tag The patch may target code that no longer matches trunk. Start from current trunk, then update again before producing the final file.
Opening a duplicate ticket Discussion, tests, and attachments become split across reports. Search Trac by behavior, component, and error text before filing.
Sending only a GitHub pull request Core’s canonical workflow still requires the Trac association and patch artifact. Attach the diff or patch to the matching Trac ticket and use GitHub only as supplemental review.
Combining unrelated cleanup Reviewers cannot tell which lines fix the reported issue. Keep one ticket’s patch focused; submit separate work separately.
Omitting testing notes Maintainers cannot judge what was verified or what remains uncertain. Record the environment, reproduction, tests, results, and limitations.
Uploading a stale patch New trunk commits can make context invalid or introduce a conflicting fix. Refresh, retest, regenerate, and mark the new attachment clearly.
Claiming tests you did not run It creates false confidence and wastes review time. Report only completed checks; identify untested areas plainly.

Submission checklist

  • The checkout is current WordPress trunk.
  • I searched Trac and am using the correct existing ticket, or documented why a new ticket is necessary.
  • The patch addresses one clearly described problem.
  • The code follows the surrounding WordPress coding conventions.
  • Relevant tests or manual reproduction steps were run locally.
  • The test notes state exactly what passed, failed, or was not run.
  • I updated from trunk after making the change and before generating the patch.
  • The diff contains no unrelated edits, secrets, or generated clutter.
  • The patch was generated from the repository root or equivalent branch context.
  • The attachment, explanation, testing notes, and screenshots are on the Trac ticket.
  • Any GitHub branch or pull request is linked to Trac rather than used as a replacement.

What to expect after submission

Review speed varies with the component, the complexity of the change, the availability of maintainers, and the state of trunk. There is no guaranteed acceptance timeline. A patch may be accepted, revised repeatedly, superseded by another solution, or closed when the project decides not to pursue the change.

You can make review easier by keeping the ticket current, answering questions directly, uploading refreshed patches when needed, and preserving a clear test record. The most valuable first contribution is not necessarily the largest one; it is a change that another developer can understand, apply, test, and maintain.
