Notero can send Zotero records and notes to a Notion database, but it is a one-way workflow: changes made in Notion do not sync back to Zotero. It also does not transfer local PDFs or other attachments into Notion. Before setting it up, check the current Zotero compatibility listed in the Notero project, then connect and share a Notion database whose properties match the plugin’s supported schema.
What Notero syncs—and what it does not
Notero monitors the Zotero collections you choose. When an item is added or changed, it can create or update a page in a Notion database with bibliographic details such as title and authors. It also adds a notion tag and a link attachment to the Zotero item; that link helps associate the Zotero record with its Notion page. You can also manually sync an item, a selection, or a collection from Zotero’s context menus. See the Notero project documentation for the current workflow and supported fields.

Notes can be synced to the corresponding Notion page. To send highlights and annotations from a PDF, first create a Zotero note from them using Zotero’s Add Note from Annotations action; Notero syncs that note, rather than transferring the PDF’s annotations or file directly.

Sync direction
The documented flow is Zotero to Notion. Notero does not send edits made in Notion back to Zotero. The project notes that bidirectional syncing would require a separately hosted service to receive Notion webhooks and write changes through the Zotero API. If you use this setup, treat Zotero as the source of truth for bibliographic data.

PDFs and other attachments
Notero does not upload local files to Notion or create a direct Notion link to a local file. The project cites limitations in Notion’s API and the fact that Notion accepts web URLs rather than local file: URLs. Its documented workarounds include storing a file path in a database property or opening the Zotero web library through the Zotero URI property when the attachments are synced to your Zotero account. Zotero file syncing is a separate feature; it can make files available through Zotero’s web library, but does not move them into Notion. See Zotero’s sync documentation.
Check compatibility before installing
Compatibility depends on the Notero release. The project’s repository currently says its latest release requires Zotero 10 or above and that Notero v1.2.3 supports Zotero 7, 8, and 9. These are release-specific statements and can change, so check the repository and release notes for your Zotero version before downloading.

Set up Notero
- Install the plugin. Download the Notero
.xpirelease file from the Notero project. In Zotero, open Tools → Plugins, then drag the file into the plugin manager or select Install Plugin From File. - Authorize Notion. Open Notero preferences in Zotero and select Connect to Notion. In the browser authorization flow, select the workspace, choose a template database offered by the connection or an existing database, and grant access. Return to Zotero to complete the connection. If the browser handoff does not finish, the project documents copying the connection token into Notero preferences.
- Share an existing database with Notero. In Notion, open the database page, choose Connections, and add Notero. Notion says workspace owners manage workspace connections; if the option is unavailable, ask the workspace owner. See Notion’s connection help.
- Check the database properties. The database needs one property of type Title. Other properties are optional, but property names, capitalization, and types must match the supported schema in the Notero documentation. Examples include Authors (text), Collections (multi-select), DOI (URL), Date Added (date), Tags (multi-select), Year (number), and Zotero URI (URL).
- Choose what to monitor. In Notero preferences, select Zotero collections and choose whether item and note changes should sync automatically. For existing records, use Zotero’s context menu to sync an item, selected items, or a collection.

Permissions, schema errors, and privacy
Fix access and property mismatches
A database that has not been shared with Notero, or a property whose name or type does not match the documented schema, can cause Notion API errors. Confirm the database connection and compare its properties with the plugin’s supported schema. If a Notion page that was previously linked to a Zotero item has been deleted, the project documents resolving stale links through its error guidance.
Understand what authorization means
Notero’s privacy policy, last updated January 10, 2025, says the plugin uses a Notion public integration with OAuth 2.0 and an OAuth proxy, stores the token through Zotero’s login manager, and sends user-generated item data—including notes, tags, and custom fields—to Notion for synchronization. It says the plugin communicates with Notion and the OAuth proxy. This is the developer’s disclosure, not an independent security assessment. Review the current project privacy policy before connecting sensitive research, and authorize only a workspace and database you intend to use.
