To use your phone as an AirConsole controller, the car must support AirConsole first. Open the AirConsole app on the vehicle’s infotainment system, scan the QR code shown on the car display with your phone, follow the link to the controller web app or mobile app, and join the game lobby. The phone supplies the controls; the car screen displays the game. Volkswagen and BMW/MINI instructions require the vehicle to be parked before play.
What you need before pairing
AirConsole is an in-car gaming integration, not a generic app that appears simply because a vehicle has Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Your vehicle needs an eligible AirConsole integration, the required infotainment software and equipment, and access to the relevant in-car app store or service package.

Compatibility is more specific than a brand name. Two vehicles carrying the same badge can have different infotainment generations, software versions, screens or connected-service entitlements. A model listed for one country may not be listed in another, and a game available in one integration may not appear in another. Record the exact model, model year, software version and market before contacting support; those details usually determine whether the issue is eligibility or pairing.

How the phone-and-car connection works
The car runs the game on its infotainment display. Your phone joins that session as a network controller, sending button presses, swipes or other touch controls to the game. You normally do not connect the phone to the car with a USB cable, Bluetooth controller profile or a separate adapter. The in-car AirConsole screen creates the session and presents a QR code; the phone uses that code to open the matching controller page.
AirConsole’s general How to Connect instructions also describe entering a connect code on the phone in flows where that option is displayed. Use the method shown by your vehicle rather than assuming every integration exposes both choices.
The QR code links the phone to the current lobby, not permanently to the vehicle. If you close AirConsole, restart the infotainment system or generate a new session, scan the newly displayed code again. Reusing an old browser tab can leave the phone connected to an expired lobby even though the car is showing a different game session.
Step-by-step: connect your phone and start a game
- Park the car in a safe location. Put the vehicle in Park and follow the automaker’s rules. Do not attempt to start a central-screen game while driving. AirConsole’s Volkswagen support wording is explicit: “For safety reasons, AirConsole can only be used when the vehicle is parked!”
- Confirm compatibility. Search the car’s infotainment app store for “AirConsole” or “AirConsole Games.” Then check the AirConsole supported-car page for your exact model, software version, market and required package or subscription. A phone’s CarPlay or Android Auto support does not establish AirConsole compatibility.
- Install the in-car app if necessary. If the app is not already present, obtain it through the manufacturer’s in-car app store when your vehicle is eligible. Do not install a random phone-only game app and expect it to create the car session.
- Launch AirConsole from the infotainment screen. Open AirConsole or AirConsole Games and wait for the connection screen. The car display should show a QR code and, in some vehicle flows, a short connect code.
- Scan the QR code with the phone camera. Open the camera, point it at the code and tap the notification or link that appears. The link should open AirConsole’s controller web app or the installed controller app. If your vehicle shows a connect code and offers code entry, type it into the AirConsole connection screen on the phone instead.
- Complete the player prompt. Enter a nickname if the controller asks for one. This name identifies the phone in the lobby; it does not replace the vehicle account or prove compatibility.
- Join the lobby. Confirm the join prompt on the phone. The car display should show the phone as a connected player. In Volkswagen’s described flow, the first connected player can be designated the main controller.
- Choose a game. Browse the games presented by the in-car AirConsole app and select one from the phone controller or the vehicle interface, depending on the integration. The catalogue and player limit are vehicle-dependent.
- Add other players. Each additional player scans the same QR code on the car display with their own phone and joins the lobby. No extra physical gamepad is required by the normal pairing flow.
Take the steps in this order. Opening the phone controller before the vehicle creates a lobby can lead to a page with nothing to join. Likewise, selecting a game before all players have joined may leave a late player outside that title’s lobby. Wait for every phone to appear on the car display, then check the game’s own player limit.
Manufacturer-specific setup
Volkswagen
If AirConsole is missing, install it from the VW In-Car Shop on an eligible vehicle. Open AirConsole Games, scan the QR code with the phone camera, enter a nickname if prompted and join the lobby. Select a game after the players appear. AirConsole’s Volkswagen requirements indicate that covered passenger models may require an active VW Connect Plus subscription; exact eligibility varies by model and market. The app can be used only while the vehicle is parked. See the detailed Volkswagen play instructions for the current flow.
If the VW In-Car Shop does not show the app, first verify that the vehicle is one of the covered passenger models and that VW Connect Plus is active where required. Installing a controller app on the phone cannot add a missing in-car entitlement. The first phone connected in the described VW flow may become the main controller, so connect the person who will choose games first.

BMW and MINI
Open AirConsole Games in the vehicle’s iDrive system. Scan the displayed QR code, enter a nickname when requested, join the lobby and select a game. BMW/MINI availability can depend on the supported operating-system version, vehicle model and service or package conditions, so check those requirements before troubleshooting the phone. The BMW/MINI instructions also require the vehicle to be parked during play.

Audi
For a supported Audi, sign in to myAudi, make sure the vehicle has an active internet connection, install AirConsole from the Audi Application Store and launch it. Scan the QR code on the in-car screen to connect the phone. Audi says selected vehicles can run AirConsole on the central MMI display or, where equipped, on the passenger display. The passenger-display capability is a specific integration; it does not mean that every Audi, every screen or every central display supports gaming while the car is moving. Confirm the exact vehicle and equipment in the Audi announcement and current compatibility information.
The Audi sequence has two separate account and connection checks: myAudi sign-in and the vehicle’s internet connection. Completing one does not replace the other. If the Application Store cannot be reached, solve the car’s connectivity or account issue before testing the QR code.
Other supported makes
The supported-car overview also lists selected Porsche and Škoda vehicles. Their app-centre paths, software requirements, packages, supported countries and player limits may differ from the Volkswagen, BMW/MINI or Audi procedures. Use the in-car store and the current requirements page rather than copying another make’s instructions.

There is no single universal “AirConsole-compatible” specification. Treat a green result in one row as insufficient until the other rows also match. For example, a vehicle may have the right screen but lack the required subscription, or have the right subscription but an unsupported software version. Recheck after an infotainment replacement or software change, because the app catalogue can be tied to the installed system.

Costs and hardware: what is and is not required
The normal pairing flow uses the smartphone you already own as the controller. AirConsole’s instructions do not identify a separate gamepad, USB cable, phone mount, printed QR code or CarPlay/Android Auto adapter as necessary. Buying one of those items will not make an unsupported vehicle compatible.
Potential charges come from the vehicle integration rather than the QR pairing itself. A car may require a connected-services subscription, feature package or license; Volkswagen’s covered models, for example, can require VW Connect Plus. The amount, trial period and renewal terms are market- and model-specific, so check the automaker account and current AirConsole requirements before assuming play is included. AirConsole’s game catalogue and player limits can also vary by integration.
If the QR code will not connect
Work through the checks below in order. They distinguish a missing vehicle entitlement from a phone-browser problem.

The AirConsole app is not listed
- Search the manufacturer’s in-car app store, not only the phone’s app store.
- Check the exact model, software, country and connected-services package against the current supported-car page.
- Install pending infotainment updates only according to the automaker’s procedure; an update can change app availability, but no universal version number applies to every make.
- If the car is not listed or the required package is inactive, phone pairing cannot add support that the vehicle does not have.
The QR code is visible but the phone does nothing
- Use the normal camera app and hold the phone steady until the link banner appears.
- Make sure the phone has a working internet connection and that its browser is allowed to open the link.
- If the vehicle displays a connect code and provides a code-entry option, use that alternative in AirConsole.
- Close an old controller tab or app session and rescan the current code. A new car session can invalidate an earlier controller page.
- Check that the code is fully visible and not obscured by a notification, glare or a split-screen layout. Return to the connection screen to generate a fresh code if necessary.
The phone joins but the game does not respond
- Keep the controller page open and prevent the phone from locking or switching to another app.
- Confirm that the correct player appears in the in-car lobby before starting the game.
- Leave and rejoin the lobby if the car was restarted or the AirConsole app was reopened; the phone may still be showing an expired session.
- Check the game’s displayed player limit. A title may accept fewer phones than the vehicle integration supports overall.
- If several phones are connected, identify each nickname on the car display so the intended player is using the active controller.
The connection drops
- Check the car’s internet indicator and move the vehicle to a location with reliable connectivity before launching a new session.
- Keep the phone within normal wireless coverage of the car and disable battery-saving restrictions that suspend the browser or controller app.
- Restart the in-car AirConsole app, generate a fresh QR code and have every player scan the new code.
- If only one title fails, try another game in the catalogue; availability and behavior can vary by vehicle integration and game.
- Do not troubleshoot by driving. Stop in a safe location, then restart the session or check settings.
Can you play while the car is moving?
Do not treat AirConsole as a driving-time activity. Volkswagen and BMW/MINI documentation explicitly says the vehicle must be parked, and the Volkswagen help wording makes parking a safety requirement. Keep the driver’s attention on driving and use the central-display integration only when the vehicle is safely stopped.
Audi has separately described passenger gaming on a passenger display in selected vehicles. That arrangement is designed to separate passenger content from driver functions; it does not authorize central-screen play in motion or change the parking rule for other integrations. Unless your exact vehicle documentation clearly identifies a compliant passenger-screen mode, wait until the car is parked.
What the phone app requirement really is
You may not need to install an app on the phone. AirConsole documents a controller web-app route: scanning the car’s QR code opens the controller in the phone browser. Some vehicles or users may instead be directed to an installed AirConsole controller app. Follow the destination shown after scanning rather than downloading an unrelated third-party controller.

The phone is still necessary for each player even when the car has a touch display, because the supported workflow assigns controller input to smartphones. A cable, printed QR code, phone mount, Bluetooth gamepad or CarPlay adapter is not identified as necessary for pairing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing phone and car apps: A controller app on the phone cannot substitute for AirConsole installed in the eligible infotainment system.
- Assuming CarPlay or Android Auto is enough: AirConsole availability is a separate vehicle integration with its own model, software and market list.
- Skipping the connected-services check: A required subscription or package, such as VW Connect Plus for covered Volkswagen models, can control access.

When comparing two eligible cars, compare the model year and software version, subscription or connectivity requirement, supported country, screen location, motion restriction, game catalogue and player limit. A brand-level comparison hides the details that determine whether pairing actually works. This table describes integration patterns, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. AirConsole and automakers can change supported vehicles, software requirements, game catalogues and markets. Recheck the live in-car store and support page before relying on a particular feature.
After you finish playing
- Exit the game from the in-car interface or phone controller.
- Close the controller browser tab or app if you do not want it to reconnect to a later session.
- Have every player leave the lobby before ending the vehicle session.
- Keep the vehicle parked until the game and any passenger activity are finished.
AirConsole’s company information describes the service and its supported in-car partnerships, while the help pages linked above provide the operational requirements. Because vehicle availability changes, the most reliable decision rule is simple: if AirConsole is not offered for the exact car in its current in-car store and support documentation, do not assume a phone-side workaround will make it compatible.
