For a direct connection, unlock the phone, connect a USB data cable, select File Transfer in the phone’s USB notification, and use Windows’ file-transfer window. For a cable-free option, use Google Quick Share, provided the PC and network meet its requirements.
Windows 11 also has a File Explorer feature for browsing an Android phone wirelessly, but Microsoft’s documented setup requires Link to Windows. That makes it useful only if you mean “without the Phone Link PC app,” not if you require a connection completely independent of Microsoft’s phone-linking software.

Which connection method fits your situation?
The two methods that meet a strict “without Phone Link” requirement are USB File Transfer and Google Quick Share. USB is the most direct choice when you have a suitable cable or when wireless transfer is unavailable. Quick Share is useful for nearby wireless transfers in either direction. The Windows 11 File Explorer option is more integrated, but it depends on Link to Windows and therefore belongs in a separate, qualified category.

Before you start: decide what “connect” means
Connecting can mean copying a few photos, moving a large folder, sending a document wirelessly, or making the phone’s storage appear in File Explorer for regular management. The best method differs for each job:
- One-time or large local copy: USB File Transfer avoids wireless discovery and account setup.
- A few files between nearby devices: Quick Share avoids plugging in a cable and works in either direction.
- Repeated folder management from Explorer: Windows 11’s phone-access feature is convenient, but it requires Link to Windows.
No paid subscription is required for USB File Transfer or Google Quick Share. The only likely physical expense is a replacement USB cable if the one you own is charge-only or damaged. Google specifically warns that not every USB cable carries data, so do not buy a faster or more expensive cable merely because the phone is not appearing; first test whether the existing cable supports data.
Method 1: transfer files with a USB cable
USB File Transfer works without a pairing app. It is the most predictable option when you need to copy a folder, move photos, or retrieve a file while avoiding wireless setup. The connection is local: the phone presents its storage to Windows after you select the correct USB mode.
Recommended Free Tools
What you need
- An Android phone that is powered on and unlocked.
- A USB cable that carries data, not only electrical power.
- A Windows PC with an available USB port.
A phone can charge normally through a cable that cannot transfer data. Google’s Android Help troubleshooting instructions state: “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” If Windows never shows the phone’s files, the cable is one of the first things to test. You do not need Phone Link, a Google account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a shared network for this method.
Connect the phone and select File Transfer
- Unlock the Android phone and leave the screen available while you make the connection.
- Connect the phone to the Windows PC with the USB cable.
- On the phone, open the notification that says the device is charging over USB.
- Under Use USB for, select File Transfer.
- On Windows, open the file-transfer window that appears and use it to browse the phone and drag files between the phone and the PC.
- When finished, eject the phone from Windows before unplugging the cable.
The important setting is the USB mode. Leaving the phone in its default charging mode can make the PC appear not to recognize the device even though the battery is charging. If the notification is hidden, pull down the Android notification shade again after reconnecting rather than assuming the phone has no transfer option.
Copying and organizing files safely
Use the Windows file window to select the specific folders or files you need. For photos, check the phone’s camera or picture folders rather than moving the entire storage area. For documents, create or select a clear destination on the PC so you can verify the copy afterward.
For a large copy, wait for the transfer to finish before ejecting. If you cancel a copy, check the destination for a partial file before trying again. Ejecting through Windows before disconnecting gives the operating system a chance to finish pending activity. Keep the phone unlocked during the operation if Android asks you to authorize access again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Copying is safer than deleting the original immediately. Confirm that the files open from the PC before removing them from the phone, especially when you are freeing storage. If you are moving rather than copying, perform the operation in smaller groups so an interrupted connection is easier to audit.
When the phone only charges
Work through these checks in order:
- Reconnect the cable, unlock the phone, and look for the USB charging notification again.
- Choose File Transfer rather than leaving Charging selected.
- Try another USB cable. A charging-only cable cannot carry the files even if it fits the phone.
- Try another USB port on the same PC.
- Connect the phone to another computer. This helps distinguish a phone or cable problem from a Windows-port problem.
- Check whether Windows detects new hardware after you reconnect.
- Restart the phone and the PC if the USB mode does not reappear.
- Install available updates for the phone if the connection remains unavailable.
Do not infer that a particular USB speed or connector standard is required from the official instructions; the documented issue is whether the cable supports data at all. If a second known-good data cable and another computer produce the same result, the phone’s port or software may need manufacturer support.

USB pitfalls to avoid
- Do not unplug during an active copy just because the phone has finished charging.
- Do not leave the phone locked if Android is waiting for you to choose a USB mode or authorize access.
- Do not assume a cable is data-capable because it came with a charger; some cables are designed only for power.
- Do not expect Windows to show files while the phone remains in Charging mode.
Method 2: send files wirelessly with Google Quick Share
Quick Share transfers files over a nearby wireless connection and does not require Phone Link. Google says Quick Share is already installed on Android 6 and later. On Windows, use Google’s Quick Share app rather than a phone-linking utility.
Check compatibility before installing
- The PC must run a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later.
- ARM-based Windows devices require Windows 11 or later.
- Google’s Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs. Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead.
- Google Quick Share for Windows is unavailable in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria.
- Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet. They must be on a shared network and within 5 metres (16 feet) of one another.
These are compatibility and connection requirements, not a promise of a particular transfer speed. A corporate or public network can also prevent the devices from discovering one another even when both devices show a network connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuick Share is a nearby-transfer tool, not a general remote-access system. Keep the phone and PC close while pairing and while the transfer is in progress. If you are moving files between locations or across a network that blocks device discovery, USB is the more dependable fallback.
Set up Quick Share on Windows
- Install and open the Google Quick Share app for Windows.
- Choose a name for the PC so the phone can identify it.
- Choose the PC’s receiving visibility. The available visibility choices are Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one.
- Use a standard Windows account when opening the app. Google’s Help Center advises against opening Quick Share as administrator.
Keep the app open while you send or receive. If you want fewer unsolicited requests, sign in and select Contacts or Your devices; Google recommends those settings for greater privacy. You can change visibility later, so a setting chosen for a one-time transfer does not have to remain permanent.
Send files from Android to Windows
- On the Android phone, select the file or files you want to send.
- Open the phone’s sharing controls and choose Quick Share.
- Wait for the Windows PC to appear as a nearby recipient. If it does not appear, check the visibility and connection settings described below.
- Select the PC.
- Approve the incoming transfer on Windows if prompted.
Files received on Windows are placed in Downloads/Quick Share. The receiving device’s approval step is intentional: proximity alone does not silently accept every transfer. After a transfer, open the destination folder and confirm the file before sending another copy.
Send files from Windows to Android
- Open the Quick Share app on Windows.
- Select files in the app, or drag files into its window.
- Choose the Android phone from the list of available devices.
- Wait for the phone to display the incoming request and accept it on the phone.
If the phone is not listed, bring it closer, confirm that its Quick Share visibility allows the PC to find it, and verify Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both devices. The Android recipient must accept the request; a visible device is not automatically a willing recipient.
Quick Share privacy and security controls
Google’s Quick Share for Windows FAQ states: “All Quick Share transfers are protected by E2E encryption.” Transfers still require deliberate visibility and approval choices. Everyone makes discovery broadest, while Contacts and Your devices narrow who can see the device. No one prevents ordinary discovery until you change the setting.
Use the narrowest setting that matches the task. For a one-time transfer with someone who is not in your contacts, temporarily allowing broader visibility and then restoring the previous setting is more controlled than leaving the device discoverable indefinitely. Sign in when you want Google’s contact or device-based visibility options; otherwise, use the available local setting that exposes the least information.
Quick Share troubleshooting
- No device appears: Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on both devices, the devices are on a shared network, the phone and PC are within 5 metres (16 feet), and the intended receiver’s visibility is enabled.
- The devices are on Wi-Fi but cannot connect: Some office and managed networks block device-to-device traffic. Google’s documented workaround is to turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, turn on the phone’s hotspot, and connect the PC to that hotspot.
- The request arrives but no alert is visible: Check Windows notification settings and make sure Focus Assist or Do not disturb is not suppressing the notification.
- The Windows app behaves oddly: Reopen it using a standard account rather than running it as administrator, then recheck the PC name and receiving visibility.
- The transfer is rejected: The receiver must approve incoming files. Ask the person at the receiving device to accept the request and keep both devices nearby until the transfer completes.
- The app cannot be installed: Confirm that the PC is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, or Windows 11 or later for ARM hardware. On a Samsung PC, use Samsung’s Quick Share app instead of Google’s Windows app.
- The feature is unavailable by location: Google lists Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria as locations where Quick Share for Windows is unavailable. Use USB File Transfer if it is available to you.
Optional: browse the phone in Windows 11 File Explorer
Microsoft documents a Windows 11 feature that can show an Android phone in File Explorer. Once configured, you can browse folders and files wirelessly and open, copy, move, rename, or delete items from Windows. This is closer to ongoing storage management than a one-time send operation.

This option does not satisfy a strict “without Phone Link” requirement. Microsoft’s setup uses Link to Windows, the linked-phone component. It is appropriate only if your goal is to avoid the separate Phone Link PC app while accepting Microsoft’s phone-linking service.
Requirements
- Windows 11.
- An Android phone running Android 11 or later.
- Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later.
Microsoft’s setup path
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Mobile devices.
- Select Manage Devices and pair the Android phone.
- Enable Show mobile device in File Explorer.
After setup, the phone can appear as a device in File Explorer for wireless file management. If you do not want Link to Windows installed or paired, use USB File Transfer or Quick Share instead. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing documentation covers sharing between Windows PCs; it does not establish Nearby sharing as an Android-to-Windows transfer method, so do not substitute it for Quick Share.
Choosing the right method
Choose USB when reliability matters most
USB is the clearest choice for a large folder, an unreliable wireless network, or a PC that cannot use Quick Share. It avoids account pairing and network discovery. The trade-off is physical: you need a data-capable cable, and the phone must remain connected until the copy finishes. It is also the easiest method to troubleshoot because you can test another cable, port, or computer.
Choose Quick Share for nearby, cable-free transfers
Quick Share is suited to occasional transfers in both directions when the phone and PC are in the same place. It avoids a cable and places Windows receipts in a predictable folder. Its dependencies are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a shared network, visibility controls, and proximity, so it is less suitable when a managed network blocks device-to-device communication.
Choose File Explorer access only when Link to Windows is acceptable
File Explorer integration is the most convenient for repeatedly browsing and managing phone storage from Windows 11. It is not an independent alternative to Microsoft’s linking technology, because the documented setup requires Link to Windows. If avoiding every Microsoft phone-link component is important, do not enable this option simply because it appears in Windows Settings.
A practical decision checklist
- Need a strict no-Phone-Link connection right now? Start with USB File Transfer or Quick Share.
- Have a cable but the phone only charges? Unlock the phone, select File Transfer, and test another cable because some cables carry power only.
- Want wireless transfer between nearby devices? Verify Quick Share’s Windows version, architecture, regional availability, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, shared network, visibility, and 5-metre range.
- Need to manage phone folders repeatedly inside File Explorer? Use the Windows 11 feature only if Android 11 or later and Link to Windows 1.24072.258.0 or later are acceptable.
- Are you on an office network? If Quick Share cannot discover the other device, use the phone’s hotspot workaround or switch to USB.
- Are notifications missing? Check Windows notification settings and Focus Assist or Do not disturb before retrying the transfer.
- Are you using a Samsung PC? Install Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store rather than Google’s Windows app.
- Do you need the phone’s files but have no working data cable? Check Quick Share compatibility first; if the network or region prevents it, resolve the cable issue or use another supported computer.
What “without Phone Link” does and does not mean
Phone Link is not required for the two basic transfer paths. USB uses the phone’s USB mode and Windows’ file window; Quick Share uses Google’s Android and Windows apps. Neither requires pairing the phone through Microsoft’s Phone Link PC app.
Windows’ newer wireless File Explorer access is different. It may look like a separate transfer method because the files appear directly in Explorer, but Microsoft’s documented configuration still pairs the phone through Link to Windows. Treat it as an optional convenience feature, not as a fully independent solution.

How do I transfer files from Android to Windows without Phone Link?
Use USB File Transfer or Google Quick Share. For USB, unlock the phone, connect a data-capable cable, open the USB charging notification, choose File Transfer, and copy files in Windows. For wireless transfers, install Google Quick Share on a supported Windows PC and send the files from the Android sharing menu.
Can I connect my Android phone to my PC with a USB cable?
Yes. The phone must be unlocked, the cable must support data, and the phone’s USB setting must be changed to File Transfer. A cable that supplies power but lacks data lines will only charge the phone.

Why is my phone only charging when I plug it into my computer?
Android may still be set to Charging, or the cable may be charge-only. Reopen the USB notification and select File Transfer, then try another cable, USB port, or computer. Restarting the phone and installing available phone updates are also documented troubleshooting steps.
How do I send files wirelessly from Android to Windows?
Use Quick Share. On Android, select the files, choose Quick Share, select the Windows PC, and approve the transfer on the receiving device. Both devices need Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a shared network, suitable visibility settings, and a distance of no more than 5 metres (16 feet).
Does Quick Share work on every Windows PC?
Google’s Windows app requires 64-bit Windows 10 or later. ARM-based Windows devices require Windows 11 or later. Google’s app is intended for non-Samsung PCs; Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store. The Google Windows app is unavailable in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria.
Where do Quick Share files go on Windows?
Files received through the Windows app are placed in Downloads/Quick Share. If you cannot find a received file, open that folder and confirm that the transfer completed rather than assuming it was saved elsewhere.
Is Quick Share secure?
Google says that all Quick Share transfers are protected by end-to-end encryption. You still control who can discover the device through Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one, and the receiving device must approve incoming transfers. Use the narrowest visibility option suitable for the task.
Why can’t Quick Share find my PC on an office network?
Some managed networks block device-to-device traffic. Google’s documented workaround is to turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, enable the phone’s hotspot, and connect the PC to that hotspot. If that is impractical, use USB File Transfer.
Can Windows 11 show my Android phone in File Explorer without Phone Link?
Not under Microsoft’s documented setup. The feature requires Link to Windows, Android 11 or later, Windows 11, and Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later. It avoids the separate Phone Link PC app but does not avoid Microsoft’s phone-linking component.
Is Microsoft Nearby sharing an alternative to Quick Share for Android?
Microsoft’s Nearby sharing documentation describes sharing between Windows PCs. It does not establish Nearby sharing as an Android-to-Windows transfer method. Use USB File Transfer or Google Quick Share for this Android-to-Windows task.
