There is an important limitation: the official Xiaomi pages available for this guide explain general Xiaomi Home onboarding and earlier door/window sensor generations, but they do not verify a Sensor 3-specific pairing sequence, reset gesture, battery specification, radio protocol, gateway requirement, or regional procedure. Confirm the exact model number and market on the packaging or device before applying advice intended for another generation.

- Bluetooth enabled: Xiaomi’s general support instruction is, “Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is on during the whole process.” Keep it enabled from discovery through completion.
- Short distance: Keep the sensor close to the phone during the first attempt. If you already have a Xiaomi hub configured, keep the sensor near that hub as well while checking communication.
- Requested permissions: Be ready to allow Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, or other permissions Xiaomi Home asks for. The exact permission list depends on the phone operating system and app version.

Pair the sensor through Xiaomi Home
1. Start with automatic discovery
- Place the sensor next to your phone and open Xiaomi Home.
- Wait for the app to detect a nearby device. Xiaomi’s general add-device guidance says a nearby-device card may appear with an OK prompt.
- If the prompt identifies the exact Sensor 3 model, select OK and continue through every instruction displayed in the app.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled throughout the process. If Xiaomi Home requests a permission, grant it while discovery is in progress; refusing a permission can prevent the app from seeing nearby hardware.
The labels and screens can change between app versions and phone operating systems. Use the current on-screen wording rather than following an older screenshot or a procedure for another sensor generation.
2. Add it manually when no prompt appears
- Open Xiaomi Home and tap the + button in the upper-right corner, or open the app’s device-add path.
- Check the nearby-device list first.
- If the sensor is not shown there, use the app’s search function and enter the model name shown on the packaging or device.
- Select the exact model only when the name and generation match. Do not choose an older “Mi Door and Window Sensor” or “Sensor 2” entry just because it looks similar.
- Follow the instructions supplied by this app version. Leave Bluetooth on until the app reports completion or presents the next setup stage.
If Xiaomi Home offers several similarly named products, stop and verify the model number and region before continuing. A successful connection to the wrong catalog entry is not a reliable Sensor 3 setup.
3. Finish and check the result
After the in-app flow finishes, confirm that Xiaomi Home has created a device entry for the exact model. Use the controls and event information exposed by your app version to check that the sensor’s state changes when the body and magnet move apart and together. Xiaomi’s published troubleshooting for an earlier model uses that movement to trigger communication, but it does not establish a Sensor 3-specific test or reset gesture.

If the tile is ambiguous, return to the model information on the box or device and compare it with the catalog entry.
If Xiaomi Home cannot find Sensor 3
Work through these branches in order. They separate ordinary discovery problems from a catalog or generation problem.
No nearby-device prompt
- Confirm that Bluetooth is on and remains on while Xiaomi Home is open.
- Move the sensor closer to the phone and repeat the add-device flow.
- Tap + in the upper-right corner and check both nearby devices and manual search.
- Allow every Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, or related permission the app requests for discovery.
Xiaomi’s general add-device instructions support this nearby-device and manual-search workflow: How do I add a new device?
The exact model is missing from search
- Read the model number again from the box or device; do not rely on a retailer title or a similar product icon.
- Check the market or region printed on the packaging and the region associated with your Xiaomi Home setup. Regional catalogs can differ, and the available official pages do not establish that every Sensor 3 variant appears in every region.
- Do not select an earlier generation as a substitute. Xiaomi’s own documentation shows that earlier generations can use different connectivity requirements.
- If the exact model still does not appear, record the model number, market, phone operating system, Xiaomi Home version, and a screenshot of the search result before contacting Xiaomi support.
The app asks for permissions
Allow the permissions Xiaomi Home requests during device discovery. Xiaomi’s general smart-home guidance indicates that Bluetooth, location, and Wi-Fi permissions can affect discovery, and behavior varies by operating system and app version. If you deny a request, return to the phone’s app-permission settings and enable the permission Xiaomi Home identifies as necessary, then repeat the add-device flow.

Pairing stops after a hub is mentioned
Do not assume that a hub named in a generic instruction is the correct one for Sensor 3. First verify the exact model and protocol. The official material confirms a ZigBee gateway for the original Mi Window and Door Sensor, while a Xiaomi Mexico support page distinguishes Sensor 2 as Bluetooth-capable. Neither establishes the radio or gateway requirement for Sensor 3.
The app shows a different generation
Stop rather than accepting the closest-looking result. Capture the displayed product name, then compare it with the model number printed on the device. A different generation can have a different radio, gateway dependency, or regional listing. Selecting the wrong entry may create a misleading partial setup that is harder to troubleshoot than an obvious “device not found” message.
The sensor was previously added elsewhere
If the app identifies an existing device entry, confirm that it refers to this physical sensor and the same Xiaomi account or home. Use only the account and device-management options shown for that exact entry. Do not perform an undocumented reset, battery removal, button hold, or casing operation based on instructions for another generation.
Why generation and protocol matter
Door and window sensors that look alike may use different radios and may be listed under different regional catalogs. The following comparison is limited to what Xiaomi’s official pages establish; “not established” means the available documentation does not verify the field for Sensor 3.
| Generation or product | What Xiaomi’s official material establishes | What that means for a Sensor 3 setup |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mi Window and Door Sensor | The global product page specifies that it requires a ZigBee gateway. | Do not use this requirement as proof that Sensor 3 is ZigBee. Source: Xiaomi Mi Window and Door Sensor specifications. |
| Mi Door and Window Sensor 2 | A Xiaomi Mexico regional support result distinguishes this generation as Bluetooth-capable, including direct phone Bluetooth in its explanation. | Sensor 2’s connection method does not establish Sensor 3’s protocol. Source: Xiaomi Mexico regional FAQ. |
| Door and Window Sensor 3 | The official pages used for this guide do not verify its radio protocol, reset operation, battery, gateway, or region-specific onboarding. | Use the exact Sensor 3 listing and the current Xiaomi Home prompts. Treat generation-specific advice found elsewhere as unverified until the model and region match. |
This is why a hub should be treated as a compatibility decision, not an automatic pairing accessory. Xiaomi’s general smart-home integration guidance says a gateway can enable remote viewing, notifications, and automations for some Bluetooth child devices, but it does not confirm that Sensor 3 is one of those devices or identify a compatible gateway model. See the official integration guidance at Xiaomi’s smart-home integration guide.
Earlier-generation troubleshooting: use only as a reference
Xiaomi has a support article for an earlier “Mi Door and Window Sensor” that cannot connect to a Home Hub. Its sequence is useful for understanding the kinds of checks Xiaomi recommends, but the article does not verify that Sensor 3 has the same reset operation or menu labels.
Check communication close to the hub
For the earlier model, Xiaomi advises testing communication with the sensor near the hub. If you are diagnosing a Sensor 3 installation that already includes a hub, you may use proximity as a low-risk check, but do not infer from the result that the hub is the correct Sensor 3 gateway.

Trigger the sensor
The earlier-model article tells users to move the sensor body and magnet apart to trigger communication. This can help determine whether an already-added device is reporting an event, but it is not a confirmed Sensor 3 reset gesture. Do not press, hold, open, or otherwise manipulate the Sensor 3 based on an earlier model’s instructions unless Xiaomi’s current instructions for your exact model say to do so.
Refresh the device log
For the earlier sensor, Xiaomi recommends refreshing the device log after triggering it. If your Sensor 3 device page exposes a log-refresh control, use the label shown by your current app; if it does not, do not assume that an older menu exists.
Delete and add again only after checking the model
Xiaomi’s earlier-generation troubleshooting advises deleting and adding the sensor again when the communication problem persists. Apply that step only to the exact device entry you intentionally created. Deleting a similarly named entry and re-adding it under the wrong generation can make diagnosis harder.
The complete earlier-model support reference is Mi Door and Window Sensor can’t connect to Home Hub.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pairing from too far away: The first discovery attempt should be made with the sensor beside the phone, not in its final installed location.
- Turning Bluetooth off: Xiaomi explicitly says Bluetooth should remain on throughout its general add-device process.
- Denying discovery permissions: Location, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth permissions may be needed depending on the phone and app version.
- Choosing a familiar product name: “Mi Door and Window Sensor” and “Sensor 2” are not safe substitutes for a Sensor 3 catalog entry.
- Buying a hub first: The correct gateway, if one is required, depends on the exact Sensor 3 protocol and region, neither of which is verified by the official pages used here.
- Using an unverified reset gesture: Earlier-model instructions are reference material only and do not prove how Sensor 3 resets.
- Changing region blindly: A region change can alter the catalog and services, but it is not a verified Sensor 3 fix.
When a regional or catalog mismatch is the likely explanation
A missing Sensor 3 entry does not prove that the hardware is defective. The app may be showing a catalog for a different market, or the printed product name may not be the model identifier Xiaomi Home expects. Before changing account regions or purchasing another accessory:
- Photograph the model label and regional information on the packaging or device.
- Compare that information with the exact name displayed in Xiaomi Home search.
- Check whether the app offers a Sensor 3 entry for the same market rather than an older or generic door/window sensor.
- Keep a note of the phone operating system, Xiaomi Home version, and the permissions already granted.
- Ask Xiaomi’s regional support to confirm catalog availability and gateway requirements for that exact model number.
Do not change the app’s region blindly. A region change can alter the catalog and available services, but the official material used here does not provide a verified Sensor 3 region-switch procedure or guarantee that changing regions will make the device compatible.

- Identify the generation: Confirm that the hardware is actually Sensor 3.
- Check the exact Xiaomi Home listing: Read any compatibility or gateway instruction shown for that listing.
- Try the general phone-based discovery flow: Keep Bluetooth on, use nearby discovery or manual search, and grant requested permissions.
- Only then evaluate a gateway: If Xiaomi’s exact Sensor 3 documentation or the app requires one, use a gateway explicitly listed for that model and region.
The original sensor’s ZigBee requirement and Sensor 2’s Bluetooth description demonstrate why this order matters. They are evidence of differences between generations, not evidence that Sensor 3 follows either design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying, compatibility, and cost considerations
The sensor is the only clearly relevant purchase for this setup. If you are comparing listings, match the model number and market before considering price or availability; a cheaper listing for another generation is not an equivalent alternative. No verified price, stock status, commission arrangement, or affiliate offer is established here.
A compatible gateway is a possible additional purchase only after the exact Sensor 3 protocol and regional support are confirmed. Do not count a gateway as a required cost until Xiaomi Home or Xiaomi support identifies it for your model. Likewise, do not assume that a gateway marketed for the original Mi Window and Door Sensor or Sensor 2 will work with Sensor 3.
What to include when asking Xiaomi for help
If the exact Sensor 3 model never appears after the documented discovery steps, provide support with information that allows it to distinguish a permissions problem from a regional or hardware mismatch:
- Full model number and any regional suffix printed on the package or device.
- Country or market where the sensor was purchased and the region selected in Xiaomi Home.
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Xiaomi Home app version.
- Whether Bluetooth was enabled for the entire attempt.
- Which permissions Xiaomi Home requested and whether they were allowed.
- The exact screen where discovery stopped, plus a screenshot if possible.
- Whether the app showed an older generation, a generic door/window sensor, or no matching device at all.
This information is more useful than reporting only that “the sensor will not connect,” because Xiaomi’s published pages do not establish one universal Sensor 3 reset or gateway procedure.
Pairing checklist
- Exact Sensor 3 model number and market verified on the hardware or packaging.
- Sensor placed close to the phone for the first attempt.
- Xiaomi Home opened and the + add-device path available.
- Bluetooth enabled for the entire process.
- Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, and other requested discovery permissions allowed.
- Nearby-device prompt accepted when it identifies the exact model, or manual search performed.
- No older-generation entry selected as a substitute.
- Gateway purchase postponed until the Sensor 3 protocol and regional compatibility are confirmed.
- Earlier-generation reset instructions not treated as Sensor 3 facts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Xiaomi Door and Window Sensor 3 pair directly with my phone?
Start with Xiaomi Home’s nearby-device and manual-add flow with Bluetooth enabled. The official pages available here do not verify whether every Sensor 3 variant uses direct phone Bluetooth, so rely on the exact model listing shown for your region.
Do I need a Xiaomi gateway for Sensor 3?
The requirement is not established by the official pages available here. The original Mi Window and Door Sensor is documented as requiring a ZigBee gateway, while Sensor 2 is described as Bluetooth-capable. Confirm Sensor 3 compatibility before buying a hub.

What should I do if Sensor 3 is not listed?
Verify the model number and market on the device or box, check Xiaomi Home’s region and app version, allow requested permissions, and search manually. Do not select Sensor or Sensor 2 as a substitute.
Is there a confirmed Sensor 3 reset button or gesture?
No Sensor 3-specific reset operation is established here. Earlier-model support mentions moving the body and magnet apart and, if necessary, deleting and adding the device again, but those steps are not proof of Sensor 3 behavior.
Why does Xiaomi Home ask for location or Wi-Fi permission?
Xiaomi’s general smart-home guidance indicates that Bluetooth, location, and Wi-Fi permissions can affect discovery. Permission behavior varies by operating system and app version, so allow the permissions Xiaomi Home requests during setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I change Xiaomi Home’s region to find the sensor?
A region change may alter the catalog and available services, but Xiaomi’s official material here does not provide a verified Sensor 3 region-switch procedure or guarantee that it will make the device compatible. Confirm the market with Xiaomi support first.
How close should the sensor be during pairing?
Keep it beside the phone for the first discovery attempt. If a hub is already configured, also test close to that hub, but proximity does not prove that the hub is the correct Sensor 3 gateway.
What information should I send Xiaomi support?
Send the full model and regional suffix, purchase market, Xiaomi Home region and version, phone and operating-system details, Bluetooth and permission status, the screen where setup stopped, and screenshots of the device search results.
The Bottom Line
Use Xiaomi Home’s standard nearby-device or + add flow with Bluetooth enabled, requested permissions allowed, and the sensor close to the phone. Match the exact model and region, and do not assume that the ZigBee gateway, Bluetooth behavior, battery details, or reset steps documented for earlier generations apply to Sensor 3. Confirm any gateway requirement with the current Xiaomi Home listing or Xiaomi regional support before spending more.
