To connect WhatsApp to a laptop, open WhatsApp Web or the official WhatsApp desktop app, then approve the link from your primary phone. The usual method is scanning a QR code; WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows also offer a phone-number code option. You do not need an accessory—just your phone and laptop.
Choose how to link your laptop
| Method | What you do | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| QR code | Scan the code displayed on the laptop using Linked devices on your primary phone. | WhatsApp Web and the official Windows or Mac app, according to WhatsApp’s linking instructions. WhatsApp Help Center |
| Phone-number code | Enter the eight-character code displayed on the laptop after reviewing and approving the request on your primary phone. | WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows; WhatsApp does not list Mac for this method. WhatsApp Help Center |
Both options require approval from the phone that is registered to your WhatsApp account. Menu labels may vary slightly by phone platform or app version.

Connect with a QR code
- Open WhatsApp on the laptop. Go to WhatsApp Web in a browser or open the official WhatsApp app for Windows or Mac. Leave the QR code visible.
- Open Linked devices on your primary phone. On Android, open WhatsApp’s menu and tap Linked devices. On iPhone, tap Settings > Linked Devices.
- Start linking. Tap Link a device. Confirm your identity on the phone if WhatsApp asks.
- Scan the code. Use the phone to scan the QR code shown on the laptop.
- Verify any unfamiliar-device prompt. Approve it only if the device is the laptop you are linking now. WhatsApp’s instructions are at How to link a device.
Link with a phone-number code
Use this alternative if scanning is inconvenient. WhatsApp documents it for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows; the laptop displays an eight-character code that you enter on the primary phone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp for Windows on the laptop and choose the option to link with a phone number.
- On the primary phone, open Linked devices and choose Link a device.
- Review the device name and location shown for the request. Continue only if they match the laptop you are setting up; complete identity verification if prompted.
- Enter the eight-character code displayed on the laptop and approve the link. Follow the current WhatsApp phone-number linking instructions if the labels differ.
Do not send a QR code or one-time linking code to another person. If the device name or location is unexpected, stop rather than approving the request.

What happens after you link it?
- Your laptop is a linked device, not the account-registration phone. WhatsApp lists Web, Windows, and Mac as linked-device types and allows up to four linked devices per primary phone. You still need the primary phone to register the account and link new devices. About linked devices
- Your primary phone can be offline during ordinary use. Linked devices connect independently, but WhatsApp says they log out if the primary phone is unused for more than 14 days.
- Messages, media, and calls are end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp says linked devices connect independently and that this content remains end-to-end encrypted.
- Some features have limitations on linked devices. WhatsApp lists live location viewing, creating or viewing broadcast lists, and interacting with businesses through WhatsApp Flows among features that may not be available. Check the current linked-devices help page because feature details can change.
Check or log out linked devices
Review the device list periodically, especially if you shared a laptop or used WhatsApp on a computer you no longer control. On your primary phone, open Linked devices, select a session you do not recognize, and choose the option to log it out. WhatsApp provides steps in Check devices linked to your account and unlink an unrecognized device.
For WhatsApp Web, you can disable Stay logged in before scanning if you want the browser session to log out when the tab or browser closes. WhatsApp also recommends enabling two-step verification. Use only official WhatsApp apps and supported linking options; unofficial apps or websites can put your account at risk. WhatsApp’s linked-device guidance

If WhatsApp does not work as expected
- The link will not complete: Confirm that the device name and location on the phone match your laptop. If you cannot scan the QR code, use phone-number linking where the option is available—WhatsApp Web or Windows.
- A linked device is missing older chats: WhatsApp’s support page notes a known issue in which some linked devices do not show up to a year of chat history. The primary device remains the place to check that history while the issue is being addressed; this notice may change. See About linked devices.
- The app has bugs or other issues: Keep WhatsApp updated on the linked device. WhatsApp says updates may include fixes. About linked devices
- You find a session you do not recognize: Log it out from Linked devices and consult WhatsApp’s instructions for unlinking an unrecognized device.
