How to Connect Two Xbox Controllers to One Phone—and Use Them for Two Players

To connect two Xbox controllers to a phone, pair each controller separately through Bluetooth (or connect each through a compatible wired setup), then verify that the specific game or streaming service accepts two controllers as separate players. Seeing two controllers in the phone’s Bluetooth list proves only that the phone has paired them; it does not guarantee local multiplayer, cloud multiplayer, or remote-play support.

What you need to make two-controller play work

There are two independent compatibility checks. First, the phone must establish a connection with both controllers. Second, the game or service must read both input devices and assign them to different players. A phone can show two connected controllers while a game accepts only one, maps both to the same player, or disables controller input altogether.

Xbox says its controllers connect to most compatible mobile devices through Bluetooth or a wired connection. “Most compatible” is important: support varies with the phone, operating-system version, controller revision, connector type and the game or service you intend to use.

Check these items before pairing

  • Two Xbox controllers that support the connection method you plan to use.
  • A phone with Bluetooth support, or a compatible port and adapter for wired play.
  • Charged batteries or a reliable power source for each wireless controller.
  • The exact game, cloud-gaming title or remote-play setup you want to use.
  • A multiplayer mode that explicitly supports two local controllers, if two people will play on one phone.

If you are buying a second controller for one particular title, verify that title’s controller and multiplayer information first. A second paired controller cannot add a multiplayer mode that the game does not implement.

Understand the three separate connections

For a native mobile game, the path is controller to phone to game. For cloud gaming, the phone also sends input over the internet to a remote service. For remote play, it relays input to an Xbox console or another host. A failure at any one layer can look like a controller problem, so test each layer independently.

Connect two Xbox controllers to an Android phone

Android’s menu names differ among manufacturers and operating-system versions, but the pairing sequence is consistent: put one controller in pairing mode, add it from Bluetooth settings, and repeat for the second.

  1. Turn on the first controller. Use the controller’s wireless power button. If it is already linked to another device, disconnect it there or place it into Bluetooth pairing mode according to the controller’s hardware instructions.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings. In Android, open Settings, tap Connected devices, then tap Pair new device. Some phones place the same controls under Bluetooth, Connections or a similarly named submenu.
  3. Choose the controller. Wait for the controller name to appear in the available-device list, then tap it. Accept the pairing request if Android displays one.
  4. Wait for the connection state. The controller should move from available devices to paired or connected devices. Do not start the game until this status is visible.
  5. Pair the second controller. Put the second controller into pairing mode, return to the same Bluetooth screen and select it. Pairing is an individual process; Android does not automatically add a second controller because the first one is connected.
  6. Confirm both entries. Expand the connected-device list and make sure both controllers are shown as connected, not merely remembered or previously paired.

Once both entries show as connected, launch the game and use its controller or multiplayer settings. Android’s successful Bluetooth pairing is only the phone-side part of the setup.

If the second controller replaces the first

Power-cycle the controller that disappeared, then open the Bluetooth list and check whether it is listed as disconnected, remembered or connected to another device. If necessary, remove that controller from Android’s saved devices, place it back into pairing mode and pair it again after the first controller is stable. Keep the two controllers separated by clear names in the Bluetooth list when the phone provides identifying information.

Android pairing checks that prevent confusion

  • Pair one controller at a time so you know which device generated each pairing request.
  • Do not assume a controller that appears under saved devices is actively connected.
  • If both entries have similar names, turn one controller off temporarily while identifying the other.
  • Open the game only after both connection indicators remain steady.

Connect two Xbox controllers to an iPhone or iPad

Apple’s controller-discovery guidance uses Bluetooth pairing through the device’s Settings app. The same process applies to an iPhone or iPad, provided the controller revision and the Apple device support the required connection method.

  1. Open Settings. Tap Bluetooth and leave Bluetooth enabled.
  2. Put the first controller into discovery mode. Turn it on and activate its pairing mode. A controller that is still connected to a console or another phone may not appear until that existing connection is released.
  3. Select the controller under Other Devices. Tap its name when it appears. After pairing, it should move to My Devices and show a connected status.
  4. Repeat for the second controller. Put the second controller into pairing mode and select it from the same Bluetooth screen.
  5. Check My Devices. Both controllers should be listed as connected before you open the game.

Apple also documents compatible controllers connecting through a wired connection, but the exact phone or tablet port, adapter and controller cable must match. Compatibility is not universal across every controller revision, iPhone or iPad port, game and multiplayer mode.

Reconnect a controller that was already paired

If a controller appears under My Devices but is not connected, tap its name to reconnect it. If it will not reconnect, turn it off and on, re-enter pairing mode and try again. Removing the saved entry and pairing from scratch can clear a stale connection, but it also means you will need to pair that controller again with the device later.

iPhone and iPad preparation

Close a game before changing controller connections, then reconnect both controllers and reopen it. This gives the game a chance to discover both devices at startup. If a controller is recognized in Settings but not in the game, the issue is usually the game’s controller implementation or its player-join process rather than Bluetooth pairing.

Use a wired connection for two controllers

A wired setup can avoid Bluetooth pairing, but it still depends on compatible hardware. Each controller needs a cable that fits the controller, and the phone needs a compatible port or adapter. The adapter must also support the phone’s controller connection method; a cable that physically fits is not automatically a supported data connection.

  1. Identify the connector on each controller and the port on the phone.
  2. Obtain cables and, where necessary, a phone adapter that support data communication rather than charging alone.
  3. Connect the first controller and wait for the phone to recognize it.
  4. Connect the second controller through the phone’s supported wired arrangement.
  5. Open the game’s controller settings and test each device separately.

Phones differ in how many wired accessories they can recognize at once and in whether an adapter can provide multiple controller connections. If the phone recognizes only one wired controller, the limitation may be the port, adapter or operating-system support rather than either controller.

Test the arrangement with one controller first. Then add the second without changing the adapter or cable. This isolates whether the phone supports multiple devices or whether one cable, adapter or controller is the source of the failure. A passive physical splitter is not proof that the phone can enumerate two independent controllers.

Pairing is not the same as two-player support

The most common misunderstanding is treating two Bluetooth entries as proof of two-player gameplay. The operating system handles the connections; the game decides how controller input is consumed. A game must detect both devices, keep their inputs separate and assign them to player slots.

Apple’s developer documentation illustrates this implementation detail with a two-player example: one controller is assigned to GCControllerPlayerIndex.index1 and the other to GCControllerPlayerIndex.index2. That example explains how a game can support two controllers; it is not a promise that every iPhone or iPad game does so.

How to verify a game before you start

  • Look for a local multiplayer, split-screen or same-device multiplayer mode.
  • Check the game’s controller settings for a second input device or player slot.
  • Read the game’s current support information rather than relying on the phone’s Bluetooth screen.
  • Test with both controllers connected before buying additional accessories.

Some games accept a controller only for menus or a single player. Others support multiplayer but require a separate “join” action from the second controller. If the game offers no second-player option, pairing another controller will not create one.

What a successful in-game test looks like

  1. Connect both controllers before entering the multiplayer mode.
  2. Open the game’s controller or input menu and confirm that two devices are listed, if the game exposes that screen.
  3. Select the local or same-device multiplayer mode.
  4. Press a button on the second controller when the game displays its join prompt.
  5. Check that each controller moves a different player or cursor before starting a match.

If both controllers move one character, the game may merge their inputs or assign both to the first player. That is a game-level limitation, not evidence that the phone paired incorrectly.

Native games, cloud gaming and remote play

Where the game runs changes the compatibility question. The phone may be acting as the host for a native mobile game, as a client receiving a cloud stream, or as a remote screen and input device for an Xbox console. Each arrangement can impose different controller and multiplayer rules.

Use case What the phone must do What you must verify
Native mobile game Pair or connect both controllers and pass both input streams to the game. The installed game must implement two-controller or local multiplayer support.
Cloud gaming Maintain the controller connections while sending input to the cloud service. The service, region, plan, device and individual game must support the intended multiplayer arrangement.
Remote play Relay controller input to the console or remote host. The remote-play setup and game must accept two controllers through the phone session.

Xbox describes mobile play as including cloud gaming and remote play, but availability depends on compatible devices, regions, plans and individual games. Do not assume that a title supporting two players on a console will accept two controllers through a phone-based cloud or remote-play session.

Network guidance for cloud play

For cloud gaming, Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data with speeds of 20 Mbps or higher. That is a recommendation for the connection conditions, not a measured performance guarantee. A fast connection does not override a game’s controller or multiplayer restrictions.

Network quality and controller support are separate tests. First confirm that the game sees two players while both controllers are connected. Then evaluate responsiveness during the streamed session. If local gameplay works but cloud play does not, check the service’s title, region, plan and device eligibility before replacing hardware.

Choose Bluetooth or wired play

Connection Advantages Limitations
Bluetooth No cable between the phone and controllers; convenient for a phone held separately from the players. Each controller must enter pairing mode, remain compatible with the phone and maintain its wireless connection.
Wired Can avoid wireless pairing and may be useful where Bluetooth is unreliable. Requires compatible cables, ports and adapters; simultaneous connections depend on phone and accessory support.

Use Bluetooth when both controllers and the phone support it and you want the least hardware around the phone. Choose wired play when the relevant ports and adapter arrangement are known to support both controllers. In either case, the game’s two-player support remains a separate requirement.

Troubleshoot two-controller connection problems

Only one controller appears

  • Confirm that the second controller is actually in pairing mode rather than merely powered on.
  • Check whether it is still connected to a console, computer or another phone.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on, then retry pairing the second controller.
  • Remove an old saved entry for the second controller and pair it again.
  • Try the controllers one at a time to identify whether one specific unit is failing.

The second controller disconnects after the game opens

Return to the phone’s Bluetooth screen and confirm whether the controller itself disconnected. If it remains connected there, the game may be limiting controller discovery or assigning only one player. If it disappeared from the phone, recharge it, move it closer, disconnect it from other devices and pair it again.

Both controllers are connected, but the game sees one

Open the game’s own controller settings and look for a second-player or local-multiplayer option. If no such option exists, the game may support only one controller on that platform. Pairing status in Android or iOS cannot change the game’s input design.

The controllers connect but inputs are delayed or dropped

Move closer to the phone, reduce competing wireless connections, recharge or replace the controller batteries and reconnect both devices. For cloud play, check the network conditions separately; Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 20 Mbps or higher. Network quality affects streamed play, but it does not determine whether two-player input is implemented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wired controller is not recognized

  • Check that the cable carries data and fits the controller.
  • Confirm that the phone port or adapter supports the controller connection.
  • Reconnect one controller at a time to determine whether the phone recognizes either unit.
  • Use the phone’s supported adapter arrangement for multiple accessories; a passive physical splitter is not proof of multi-controller support.

The second player cannot join

Leave both controllers connected before entering the multiplayer mode, then follow the game’s join instruction for the second player. Some games assign player slots only after a mode is selected. If the second controller still has no slot, verify the title’s current multiplayer documentation and whether cloud or remote play changes its supported player count.

Bluetooth pairing works, but wired play does not

Do not assume that a successful wireless connection proves a cable or adapter will work. Wired mode has its own requirements for connector fit, data support, phone-port compatibility and multiple-device handling. Test another known data-capable cable and then test each controller individually.

Buying a second controller or accessory

An Xbox Wireless Controller is the direct hardware category for this setup, but confirm the exact controller model and the phone’s connection options before purchase. Controller revisions are not interchangeable in every compatibility scenario.

A phone clip or mobile gaming mount can hold the phone while you play. It is optional, does not connect a second controller and cannot create two-player support in a game. A cable or phone adapter may be useful for wired play, but the required connector depends on both the controller and the phone; do not choose one solely by appearance.

When comparing prices, budget separately for the second controller, batteries or charging power, and any cable or adapter required by a wired setup. An accessory that only holds the phone does not solve pairing, player assignment or service compatibility.

A reliable setup sequence

  1. Choose the exact game or service and verify that it supports two controllers for the intended mode.
  2. Confirm the phone, operating-system version and controller models support Bluetooth or the planned wired method.
  3. Pair or connect the first controller and confirm its connected status.
  4. Pair or connect the second controller and confirm that it remains connected alongside the first.
  5. Open the game’s controller settings, select local multiplayer or the equivalent mode and assign the players.
  6. Test every button with each player before starting a match or streamed session.
  7. If the setup is cloud-based, check the network conditions separately from controller pairing.

This order isolates the three possible failure points: phone-to-controller connection, game-level input support and network performance for streamed play.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect two Xbox controllers to one Android phone?

Yes, if the phone and both controller models support the connection method. Pair the first controller in Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, then repeat for the second. The game must separately support two-player input.

Can two Xbox controllers connect to an iPhone or iPad?

Compatible controllers can connect through Bluetooth, and Apple also documents compatible wired connections. Pair each controller under Settings > Bluetooth, then confirm both appear under My Devices. Game and controller-revision compatibility still applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does seeing two controllers in Bluetooth mean two people can play?

No. Bluetooth confirms phone-to-controller connections only. The game must detect both devices, assign separate player slots and provide a local or same-device multiplayer mode.

Will every Xbox game support two controllers on a phone?

No. Native games, cloud titles and remote-play sessions can have different rules. Check the exact game and service information for controller support and player count.

Can I use two controllers for Xbox cloud gaming?

Possibly, but Xbox says cloud availability depends on the compatible device, region, plan and individual game. Verify that the specific cloud title supports the intended multiplayer arrangement. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 20 Mbps or higher for cloud play.

What should I do if the second controller does not appear?

Put it into pairing mode, make sure it is not connected to a console or another device, toggle Bluetooth, remove an old saved entry and pair again. Testing each controller separately can show whether one unit is the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do both controllers control the same player?

The game may merge both inputs or assign only one player slot. Look for a local-multiplayer setting and a second-player join prompt. Phone pairing cannot make a single-player game accept two players.

Can I connect both controllers with cables?

You can try a wired setup when each controller, cable, phone port and adapter support data communication and multiple accessories. A cable that fits physically may provide charging only, and a passive splitter does not guarantee two independent controller connections.

Is a phone clip required?

No. A phone clip or mount is optional equipment for holding the phone. It does not connect a second controller or add multiplayer support.

Should I choose Bluetooth or wired connections?

Bluetooth is simpler when both controllers and the phone support it. Wired play can avoid wireless pairing but requires compatible data cables, ports and adapters, and simultaneous support depends on the phone. Neither method guarantees that the game supports two players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Pair each Xbox controller separately, confirm both remain connected, and then verify the exact game or service can assign them to two players. Bluetooth and wired methods solve the connection step; only the game or streaming service determines whether two-player play is actually available.
