The correct two-monitor connection
The simplest setup uses the two video outputs Lenovo lists as standard on the ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2: one HDMI 1.4b connector and one DisplayPort 1.4 connector. Run an HDMI cable from the computer to the first monitor and a DisplayPort cable from the computer to the second. If a monitor has a different input, use an adapter that converts the computer’s output to an input the monitor accepts.
After connecting the cables, select the corresponding input on each monitor and configure the desktop in your operating system. Windows can extend the desktop across both screens, duplicate the same image, or show the desktop on only one display. For normal two-screen work, Extend is the useful choice because each monitor becomes additional desktop space.

Lenovo’s current product specification says the M75q Gen 2 supports “up to 3 independent displays via onboard ports (DisplayPort™ + HDMI®) and optional ports (VGA / 2nd DP / 2nd HDMI® / USB-C® / 2x DP).” Read that as a maximum for a properly configured machine, not as a promise that every chassis has every connector.
Lenovo’s PSREF product specification is the best reference for the model’s current port and display information. A dated specification copy is also available in Lenovo’s PDF.
Check the rear panel before choosing cables
Identify the two native outputs
Shut down or power off the computer if you need to move it, then look directly at the rear I/O panel. Find the HDMI socket and the full-size DisplayPort socket. HDMI has a wide, tapered opening. DisplayPort is roughly rectangular with one beveled corner. The symbols molded beside the ports can help, but rely on the connector shape and the port labels rather than on a generic photograph of another M75q Gen 2.

Configurations can vary. A machine sold under the same model name may include only the standard HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, or it may have an additional factory-installed port in an optional position. Do not purchase a second DisplayPort cable, a USB-C video adapter, or a VGA cable until you have confirmed that the corresponding connector is physically present.
Optional port choices
Lenovo lists several optional rear-port arrangements for the M75q Gen 2:
Rank #2

- VGA
- A second DisplayPort
- A second HDMI port
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort function
- Two additional DisplayPort outputs in one listed arrangement
These are configuration choices, not a set of ports installed on every unit. USB-C is especially easy to misidentify: a USB-C socket without DisplayPort function cannot be assumed to drive a monitor. Check the chassis, the machine’s exact configuration record, or the serial-number support information before treating USB-C as a display output.
Confirm the computer’s graphics configuration
The PSREF display notes apply to the graphics options Lenovo documents. The integrated-graphics information does not apply to processor configurations that do not have integrated graphics. If your exact processor or factory configuration differs from the usual integrated-graphics arrangement, verify which outputs are enabled for that system before troubleshooting a missing image.

Lenovo specifies these maximum signal capabilities for the listed graphics outputs:
| Output | Lenovo-listed maximum | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI 1.4b | 3840×2160 at 30 Hz, or 2560×1440 at 60 Hz | Suitable for 4K office work at 30 Hz or 1440p at 60 Hz; check the monitor’s HDMI input specification. |
| DisplayPort 1.4 | 3840×2160 at 60 Hz | The natural connection for a 4K monitor requiring 60 Hz, provided the monitor input and cable support it. |
| VGA optional output | 1920×1200 at 60 Hz | An analog option for compatible older displays, with a lower ceiling than the digital outputs. |
Those figures are per-port specifications. They are not a guarantee that every pair of displays will run at both quoted maxima simultaneously. The actual result also depends on the monitor input, cable or adapter, operating-system settings, and the graphics configuration in your particular M75q Gen 2.
If you want two 4K screens, connect the 4K/60 Hz display to DisplayPort. HDMI may still drive a second 4K panel, but Lenovo’s listed HDMI limit is 4K at 30 Hz. For a smoother 60 Hz desktop on the HDMI-connected display, select a resolution such as 2560×1440 if the monitor supports it.

What you need
- One monitor with an HDMI, DisplayPort, or compatible input.
- A second monitor with an HDMI, DisplayPort, or compatible input.
- An HDMI cable for the HDMI connection.
- A DisplayPort cable for the DisplayPort connection.
- An adapter only when a monitor’s input does not match the computer output.
- Power cables for both monitors and access to an outlet or power strip.
Choose cables by both ends, not by the monitor’s marketing description. For example, a monitor with only HDMI can use the computer’s HDMI output directly, but a DisplayPort-to-HDMI connection requires the correct adapter or cable. Confirm whether an adapter is intended for DisplayPort output to HDMI input; adapters are directional in many cases, and a cable designed for the reverse direction may not work.
Recommended Free Tools
For the basic HDMI-plus-DisplayPort arrangement, a dock is unnecessary. A dock becomes a consideration only when the computer’s available connectors and the monitors’ inputs cannot be matched conveniently, or when you need additional peripherals beyond the native outputs. A dock does not change the M75q Gen 2’s documented graphics limits.
Step-by-step: connect the two monitors
- Power down if repositioning the computer. Save work and shut down before moving the small desktop. If it is already in place, you can usually connect display cables while it is off to make the initial detection straightforward.
- Inspect the rear panel. Locate the native HDMI and DisplayPort sockets. Note any optional connector, but do not assume an unmarked USB-C port carries video.
- Connect the first monitor by HDMI. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the M75q Gen 2’s HDMI output and the other into the monitor’s HDMI input. Push both connectors fully home without forcing them.
- Connect the second monitor by DisplayPort. Insert the DisplayPort cable into the computer’s DisplayPort output and the monitor’s DisplayPort input. Many DisplayPort plugs have a release latch; press the latch when removing the cable instead of pulling hard.
- Connect monitor power. Turn on both monitors and the computer. If a monitor has more than one input, use its on-screen controls to select the exact socket used by the cable.
- Wait for operating-system detection. Windows normally detects both displays during startup or shortly after sign-in. If one remains blank, leave the working display connected while you troubleshoot the other.
- Choose the desktop mode. In Windows, press
Windows + Pand select Extend for two independent work areas. Choose Duplicate only when both screens must show the same image. - Arrange and apply settings. Open Settings → System → Display. Select Identify to show a number on each physical monitor, drag the display rectangles so their positions match your desk, choose the desired screen resolution and refresh rate for each, and select Keep changes when prompted.
If you use another operating system, open its display-control panel and choose an extended desktop, then arrange the screens by their physical left-to-right or stacked positions. The exact labels differ, but the required actions are the same: detect displays, select an arrangement, set each display’s mode, and apply the change.
Set resolution and refresh rate deliberately
Use the monitor’s native resolution where practical
In Settings → System → Display, select a monitor and open Display resolution. The option marked Recommended is usually the panel’s native resolution. A lower resolution can make text larger, but it may look softer. Select each monitor separately because the HDMI-connected and DisplayPort-connected screens can have different native resolutions.
Check refresh rate after changing resolution
Open Advanced display for the selected monitor and choose a refresh rate supported by both the computer output and that monitor input. Lenovo’s stated HDMI ceiling is 4K at 30 Hz or 1440p at 60 Hz, while DisplayPort is listed up to 4K at 60 Hz. A high-refresh gaming mode advertised by a monitor may require a different input, a lower resolution, or a graphics configuration outside these documented limits.

Scale text independently
Windows lets you select each display and adjust Scale separately. This is useful when one screen is a high-density 4K panel and the other is a lower-resolution display. Scaling changes the size of interface elements; it does not increase the signal resolution or bypass an output’s maximum.
Using an optional port for a third display
The M75q Gen 2 is documented for up to three independent displays. A third screen therefore requires an enabled optional output in addition to the standard HDMI and DisplayPort connections. Depending on the machine, that may be a second DisplayPort, second HDMI, VGA, USB-C with DisplayPort function, or another listed arrangement.
Connect the third display only after verifying which option your unit has. For digital quality, a DisplayPort or HDMI option is generally easier to match to a modern monitor than VGA, but the correct choice is determined by the actual socket and the monitor input. If the optional port is absent, a cable cannot create it; you would need a compatible expansion or display solution whose requirements are supported by your system.
Once connected, return to the operating system’s display settings, select the new screen, and choose Extend. Lenovo’s “up to three” statement describes independent displays; it does not mean that every possible three-monitor combination will reach the maximum resolution and refresh rate listed for each individual port.
Common connection problems and fixes
One monitor says No signal
- Use the monitor’s input control to select HDMI or DisplayPort, matching the cable’s socket.
- Reseat the cable at both ends. A connector that looks inserted can still be slightly loose.
- Swap in a known-good cable of the same type if available.
- Move the suspect monitor temporarily to the computer output that is known to work. If it works there, investigate the original port, cable, or adapter.
- In Windows, press
Windows + P, choose Extend, then open Settings → System → Display and select Detect if the screen is not listed.
The monitor is detected but remains black
Check whether the display is set to an unsupported resolution or refresh rate. Select the monitor in Display settings and choose a conservative mode first, such as 1920×1080 at 60 Hz, then increase resolution or refresh rate within the documented output limits. Also check that the monitor is awake and that its brightness or input lock has not been changed through its on-screen menu.

USB-C video does not work
Not every M75q Gen 2 has the optional USB-C port with DisplayPort function. Confirm that your chassis includes that option. If it does not, use the native HDMI and DisplayPort outputs or another port that is actually installed. A USB-C connector used only for data will not produce a display signal through a passive cable.
The image flickers or cuts out
- Make sure each plug is fully seated and that the cable is not sharply bent at the connector.
- Temporarily lower the refresh rate or resolution to determine whether the selected mode exceeds the connection’s reliable capability.
- Remove an unnecessary adapter or dock and test a direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
- Test each monitor alone. If both work individually but fail together, the selected combination may exceed the practical limits of the graphics configuration or an adapter may be unsuitable.
Only one display appears after sleep or restart
Turn both monitors off, disconnect their power for a few seconds, reconnect them, and select the correct inputs before restarting the computer. Then open Display settings and use Detect. If the behavior repeats, record which physical output is missing and test that output with the monitor and cable that work on the other connection.
Text is blurry on the HDMI screen
Blurriness can result from running a panel below its native resolution, using an analog conversion, or selecting a non-native scaling mode. Use a direct digital connection where possible, select the monitor’s recommended resolution, and adjust Windows scaling rather than lowering resolution simply to enlarge text.

Choosing a connection when both monitors have the same input
| Monitor inputs | Preferred plan | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One HDMI and one DisplayPort | Connect each directly to the matching native output. | Set the monitor inputs manually if automatic selection does not occur. |
| Two HDMI-only monitors | Use the native HDMI output for one and an installed second HDMI option or a suitable DisplayPort-to-HDMI solution for the other. | Confirm whether the optional second HDMI exists; check adapter direction and resolution support. |
| Two DisplayPort monitors | Use the native DisplayPort output and an installed second DisplayPort option, or convert the HDMI output with a compatible adapter. | Check the exact optional-port configuration and each monitor’s supported mode. |
| Monitors with VGA only | Use an installed VGA output or an appropriate active conversion solution. | Lenovo lists VGA up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz; verify that the converter supports the required direction. |
| One monitor with USB-C input | Use USB-C only if the M75q Gen 2 has the optional DisplayPort-capable USB-C port; otherwise use HDMI or DisplayPort with a compatible adapter. | Confirm that the computer’s USB-C port is the video-capable option, not merely a data port. |
What the documented limits mean in practice
The computer’s ability to drive two screens is not determined only by the number of sockets. Signal type, monitor input, cable quality, selected resolution, refresh rate, adapter direction, and the exact factory graphics configuration all matter. Two ordinary 1080p monitors are generally a straightforward workload for the documented onboard outputs, while combinations involving two 4K panels need more careful mode selection.
Do not infer that a DisplayPort 1.4 label guarantees every DisplayPort feature on every monitor, or that an HDMI 1.4b port will provide 4K at 60 Hz. Use the Lenovo limits and the monitor manufacturer’s input specifications together. If the monitor offers several HDMI sockets, check whether all of them support the same resolution and refresh rate; some panels reserve their highest mode for one particular input.
Likewise, “up to three independent displays” does not promise identical images, identical refresh rates, or identical resolutions across all three. Each screen can have its own mode within the capabilities of its connected output and input.
A quick verification checklist
- Both monitors are powered on and set to the inputs used by their cables.
- One cable runs directly from the computer’s HDMI output and one directly from its DisplayPort output for the standard two-screen setup.
- The rear panel has been inspected rather than assumed to match another M75q Gen 2.
- Any USB-C display plan has been confirmed as the DisplayPort-capable optional configuration.
- Windows is set to Extend when independent workspaces are wanted.
- Display rectangles in Settings → System → Display match the monitors’ physical positions.
- Resolution and refresh rate are selected separately for each screen and stay within Lenovo’s listed output limits.
- Adapters, when needed, match the signal direction and the monitor’s input.
