To connect two JBL speakers, first identify the speakers’ exact models and pairing system. For compatible PartyBoost speakers, connect your phone to one speaker, play music for more than 20 seconds, open the JBL Portable app, press the Connect/PartyBoost button on both speakers, then select Stereo or Party. Stereo requires two speakers of the same model; different models such as Flip 5 and Flip 6 can use Party mode but not Stereo.
JBL PartyBox speakers use a separate True Wireless Stereo (TWS) process, while older Connect and Connect+ speakers belong to different pairing families. A phone connecting to two speakers individually does not prove that the speakers can link to each other.

Choose the correct connection method first
JBL has several speaker-to-speaker systems. The button names, apps and compatibility rules are not interchangeable, so do not start by pressing buttons at random. Find the precise model name printed on each speaker or shown in its Bluetooth settings, then match it to the system below.

What to check before pairing
- Read both model names exactly. “Flip 5,” “Flip 6” and a special edition are not automatically interchangeable for every mode. Record the full designation rather than relying on size or appearance.
- Find the pairing logo or wording. Look for PartyBoost, Connect, Connect+ or PartyBox/TWS references in the manual, product label or JBL app. These labels identify different connection families.
- Decide on the desired result. Stereo divides left and right channels. Party sends the same program to both speakers. The correct purchase and setup depend on this choice.
- Use the matching app. PartyBoost uses JBL Portable. Supported PartyBox functions may use the JBL PartyBox app. An app made for one family is not a universal controller for every JBL speaker.
- Verify a mixed pair before buying. A Bluetooth phone connection to each speaker says only that each unit works as a source-connected speaker. It does not establish a speaker-to-speaker link.
What Stereo and Party modes actually do
Stereo mode
Stereo mode assigns separate left and right audio channels to the two speakers. It is the option to choose when you want a conventional stereo image, such as vocals centered between the speakers and instruments spread across the room. JBL states that PartyBoost Stereo mode can be enabled only when two speakers of the same model are used.
Matching means the same model designation, not merely two speakers from the same product family. Two Flip 6 units are a matching PartyBoost pair; a Flip 5 and Flip 6 are both supported PartyBoost products but are not a Stereo pair under JBL’s stated rule.
Party mode
Party mode sends the same program to both speakers for broader shared playback. It is useful when the speakers are placed in different parts of a room or outdoors and uniform music matters more than left/right imaging. Party mode can work with some mismatched models, but only where JBL explicitly supports that combination.
Party mode does not turn a mismatched pair into a left/right stereo system. If the app offers Party but not Stereo, that is a compatibility limitation rather than a missing setting to unlock.
| Your speakers | Party mode | Stereo mode |
|---|---|---|
| Two identical compatible PartyBoost models | Supported by the PartyBoost procedure | Supported |
| Flip 5 plus Flip 6 | Supported as the documented example | Not supported |
| Two different PartyBox models | Supported only for certain documented combinations | Not available for the mismatched PartyBox combinations described by JBL |
| Connect or Connect+ speaker mixed with PartyBoost | Not supported under the cited compatibility guidance | Not supported |
Connect two PartyBoost speakers step by step
Use this procedure when both speakers belong to the PartyBoost family and are covered by JBL’s PartyBoost instructions.
- Turn on both speakers. Keep them close enough for the initial setup and make sure both have sufficient charge.
- Connect your phone or playback device to one speaker over Bluetooth. This first speaker becomes the speaker receiving the audio source. Do not begin by trying to connect the phone to both units separately.
- Start playing music. JBL recommends allowing music to play on the first speaker for more than 20 seconds before you continue. This gives the app an actively playing speaker to detect.
- Open the JBL Portable app. Let the app detect the speaker that is currently playing music. If the app opens without showing it, confirm that the phone is connected to the correct speaker and that audio is actively playing.
- Press the Connect/PartyBoost button on both speakers. Press the button on the speaker playing music and on the second speaker. The button is the speaker-to-speaker connection control; it is different from simply pairing the phone over Bluetooth.
- Wait for both speakers to appear in the app. Do not choose a mode until the app identifies the two speakers. If only one appears, use the troubleshooting checks below instead of repeatedly switching modes.
- Choose Stereo or Party in the PartyBoost controls. Select Stereo only if the two models are identical. Select Party when you want shared playback or when JBL supports the particular mismatched pair only in Party mode.
Once the mode is selected, keep the phone connected to the speaker that originally received Bluetooth audio. The speakers’ link is managed by PartyBoost; pairing the phone to each unit separately is not a substitute for that link.
Why the 20-second step matters
The more-than-20-second instruction is part of JBL’s setup guidance, not a requirement to play a particular song or volume level. Start any audio, let it run for that period, then open or refresh JBL Portable. If you open the app before audio is active, it may not identify the intended source speaker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich button is being used?
On a PartyBoost portable speaker, the Connect/PartyBoost control starts the inter-speaker link. It is separate from the Bluetooth control used to connect the phone. Pressing only the Bluetooth button on the second speaker can leave both units individually visible to the phone without creating a synchronized pair.

PartyBoost compatibility: identical models versus mixed models
When Stereo is the goal
Use two units with the same model designation. JBL’s rule is model identity, not merely a similar product family or appearance. For example, two Flip 5 speakers are the appropriate type of pair for PartyBoost Stereo, as are two Flip 6 speakers. A Flip 5 and Flip 6 may both be PartyBoost speakers, but JBL’s example permits Party mode only.
When Party mode is enough
A mixed pair can be useful when you already own two different compatible speakers and only need the same music from both. The Flip 5/Flip 6 example is explicitly supported for Party mode. Do not generalize that example to every combination of JBL models: the pairing family and the specific support instructions still control.
What the model list tells you—and what it does not
The PartyBoost instruction lists Boombox 2, Pulse 4, Charge 5, Pulse 5, Xtreme 3, Boombox 3, Flip 5, Flip 6 and Flip 6 Martin Garrix. It does not establish compatibility for every speaker carrying the JBL name, nor does it replace the manual for a model outside that list. If the product uses a different connection logo or app, follow that product’s instructions instead.
The presence of a model in the list also does not mean it can form Stereo with every other listed model. JBL’s Stereo condition remains two identical models. The list identifies products covered by that PartyBoost procedure; it is not a universal cross-model Stereo matrix.
PartyBox speakers: use TWS, not the PartyBoost procedure
PartyBox speakers have their own True Wireless Stereo procedure. The exact button sequence varies by model, so identify both PartyBox models before attempting to pair them.
PartyBox 110, 310, 710, Encore and Encore Essential
JBL’s support instructions for PartyBox 110, 310, 710, Encore and Encore Essential describe pressing the TWS buttons on both speakers. JBL also indicates that TWS can be controlled through the JBL PartyBox app on supported models. Use the TWS control specified for your model rather than the PartyBoost button used on portable speakers.
The app is useful only when the specific PartyBox model is supported. If the app does not show a speaker, confirm the model and consult its instructions instead of assuming that a portable-speaker workflow applies.

For some models, including PartyBox 200, 300 and 1000, JBL describes holding the Bluetooth button until the notification chime sounds. This is a different physical sequence from pressing a TWS button, so do not infer that every PartyBox uses the same control.

Documented PartyBox exceptions
JBL identifies specific combinations that can pair: PartyBox 200 with PartyBox 300, and PartyBox On-The-Go with PartyBox On-The-Go Essential. The support material also identifies incompatible examples, which is why the exact model manual matters before you buy a second unit or promise that a pair will work.
Different-model PartyBox Party mode
JBL lists app-compatible PartyBox 110, 120, 310, 320, 710, Encore and Encore Essential models as able to connect in Party mode for certain different-model combinations. Stereo is not available for those mismatched combinations. This is a limited PartyBox rule, not a general rule for all JBL speakers.
Do not merge the PartyBox list with the portable PartyBoost list. The model numbers, app and buttons overlap in brand name only; they describe separate procedures and compatibility rules.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost are separate families
JBL’s compatibility guidance distinguishes Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost. A Connect speaker and a Connect+ speaker cannot be paired together, and neither family can be paired with PartyBoost under the cited instructions. The fact that two speakers can each connect to a phone over Bluetooth does not make their inter-speaker systems compatible.
Before purchasing a second speaker, check the pairing symbol, product documentation and exact model number. If the two speakers show different connection families, stop and verify compatibility instead of relying on the Bluetooth menu. The Bluetooth menu establishes a source-to-speaker connection; it does not establish that the speakers can form a synchronized pair.
Troubleshoot a PartyBoost setup that does not appear
The second speaker is missing from the app
- Confirm that both speakers are switched on.
- Make sure the phone is connected to the speaker that is playing music.
- Let music play for more than 20 seconds before opening or refreshing the JBL Portable app.
- Press the Connect/PartyBoost button on both speakers, not only on the first speaker.
- Check that the second unit is actually a PartyBoost model covered by the instructions, rather than a Connect, Connect+ or PartyBox model.
- Check that you opened JBL Portable, not the JBL PartyBox app. The app must match the speaker family.
Stereo cannot be selected
- Verify that both speakers have the same model designation. Similar size, color or product family is not enough.
- If the pair is Flip 5 plus Flip 6, use Party mode; JBL’s documented example does not support Stereo for that combination.
- If the speakers are PartyBox models, stop using the PartyBoost workflow and check their TWS instructions. JBL’s mismatched PartyBox combinations support Party mode in certain cases, not Stereo.
- If the speakers are from different connection families, no mode selection in JBL Portable can make them a supported pair.
The buttons do not behave as expected
- Recheck the product family. Portable PartyBoost speakers use the Connect/PartyBoost button, while PartyBox models may use TWS buttons or a Bluetooth-button hold until a chime.
- Use the app associated with the product family: JBL Portable for the PartyBoost procedure and JBL PartyBox for supported PartyBox controls.
- If the exact model is not covered by the instructions above, consult its current JBL manual. JBL does not publish one universal procedure for every model.
The phone keeps trying to connect to the wrong speaker
Disconnect or forget unintended individual Bluetooth connections, then reconnect the phone to the speaker that will serve as the source. Start playback on that speaker and perform the PartyBoost steps through the app. The second speaker should join through the speaker-to-speaker system rather than being selected as a second independent phone output.
Before buying a second JBL speaker
- Record the exact existing model. Write down the full designation, including the model number and any edition name.
- Identify the pairing family. Determine whether the speaker uses PartyBoost, Connect, Connect+ or PartyBox TWS.
- Decide which listening result you need. Choose Stereo for left/right channels; choose Party for the same program from both speakers.
- Match the purchase to the mode. For PartyBoost Stereo, buy the same model. For a mixed PartyBoost pair, verify that JBL explicitly supports Party mode for those two models.
- Check the exact support instructions. PartyBox combinations have model-specific exceptions, and the available app or button sequence can vary.
- Do not treat a lower price or similar name as proof of compatibility. A second speaker is useful only if its inter-speaker system matches the intended mode. Verify the pairing family before comparing retailers or editions.
The safest purchase for a PartyBoost Stereo setup is an identical second unit. Buying a different JBL speaker without checking its pairing family may leave you with two speakers that each work alone but cannot form the desired pair.

“I have a Flip 5 and a Flip 6 and want both to play.”
Use the same PartyBoost setup, then choose Party. JBL’s documented example supports Party mode for this mixed pair but not Stereo.
“I have two PartyBox speakers.”
Do not use the portable-speaker PartyBoost steps. Check whether your models use TWS buttons, the Bluetooth-button hold sequence or the JBL PartyBox app. Verify that the exact combination is listed as compatible; PartyBox exceptions are model-specific.
“I have a PartyBox 200 and PartyBox 300.”
JBL identifies this as a compatible combination under its PartyBox guidance. Follow the model-specific Bluetooth-button sequence and notification-chime instruction rather than assuming that the TWS button procedure for another PartyBox applies.

“My older speaker says Connect and my newer one says PartyBoost.”
Those are separate pairing families. JBL’s guidance does not support mixing them, even if each speaker can connect to the same phone individually.
“Can I get Stereo from two different JBL models?”
Not under the PartyBoost rule described here: Stereo requires two of the same model. Certain mismatched PartyBox combinations can use Party mode, but JBL does not make that a Stereo exception.

JBL’s support material provides procedures and examples rather than one exhaustive matrix covering every current and discontinued speaker. Product names, app support and button behavior can differ across editions and generations. Treat the model-specific manual or support page as the final authority whenever a speaker is outside the listed PartyBoost or PartyBox examples.
Quick decision checklist
- Want left/right sound? Choose two identical PartyBoost models, or follow the exact TWS instructions if your identical speakers are PartyBoxes.
- Want the same music everywhere? Party mode may allow a supported mixed pair, including Flip 5 with Flip 6 and certain listed PartyBox combinations.
- Using Connect or Connect+? Stay within that family and do not mix it with PartyBoost.
- Unsure which app or button to use? Identify the model first: JBL Portable for the documented PartyBoost workflow; JBL PartyBox or the model’s TWS/Bluetooth-button instructions for PartyBox products.
- Buying another unit? Verify the pairing family and exact model support before purchase. Brand name alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect two different JBL speakers?
Sometimes, but only when JBL explicitly supports the combination and mode. Flip 5 and Flip 6 can use Party mode under the PartyBoost guidance, but not Stereo. Certain different-model PartyBox combinations can use Party mode as well. Do not assume that every JBL model combination works.

Do two JBL speakers have to be the same model for Stereo?
Yes for the PartyBoost procedure: JBL states that Stereo mode requires two speakers of the same model. Similar appearance or belonging to the same product family is not enough.
Can I use a Flip 5 and Flip 6 together?
Yes, for Party mode under JBL’s documented example. They cannot be selected for PartyBoost Stereo as a mixed pair.
Which app connects two PartyBoost speakers?
Use the JBL Portable app. Connect the phone to one speaker, play music for more than 20 seconds, open the app, press the Connect/PartyBoost button on both speakers and select Party or Stereo when both appear.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I pair a Connect speaker with a PartyBoost speaker?
No under JBL’s compatibility guidance. Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost are separate pairing families, and a phone connecting to both individually does not make them a supported speaker pair.
Do PartyBox speakers use PartyBoost?
No. PartyBox speakers use their own TWS procedures, with model-specific controls. Some use TWS buttons, while JBL describes holding the Bluetooth button until a notification chime for models such as PartyBox 200, 300 and 1000.
Why is Stereo missing in the app?
The models may not match, or the speakers may be PartyBoxes using a different system. For example, Flip 5 plus Flip 6 supports Party mode but not Stereo. Verify the exact models and pairing family.
Can I connect my phone to both speakers separately instead?
That does not establish the JBL speaker-to-speaker link. For synchronized playback, use the appropriate PartyBoost or PartyBox TWS procedure and keep the phone connected to the designated source speaker.
The Bottom Line
Start with the model numbers, not the Bluetooth menu. For PartyBoost, connect the phone to one speaker, play music for more than 20 seconds, open JBL Portable, press Connect/PartyBoost on both units and choose Party or Stereo. Stereo requires two identical models; mixed models are Party-only where JBL explicitly supports them. PartyBox uses model-specific TWS instructions, and Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost cannot be mixed under JBL’s guidance.
