You can join a legitimate Wi‑Fi network without typing or being told its password if someone already connected can share a network QR code or use a supported device-to-device sharing feature. If the owner wants to keep the household password private, ask for a separate guest network. These are ways to grant access, not to bypass it.
Choose the method that fits your situation
| Method | Host or equipment needed | Does it reveal the password? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android network QR code | Someone with an Android device already connected | The code grants access; it avoids manually telling or typing the password. | Sharing with a nearby device that can scan Wi‑Fi codes |
| Apple Share Password | Nearby eligible Apple devices and matching account/contact conditions | The host transfers the passcode through the supported sharing flow. | Apple-to-Apple sharing when its requirements are met |
| Apple network QR code | An iPhone with the network saved and a recipient that can scan the code | The code grants access without a spoken or typed password. | Visual sharing, including across platforms |
| Windows QR scan | A Windows device with a camera and QR controls available | Scanning joins the network; Windows can also display a saved password separately. | Joining from a QR code on a supported Windows device |
| Guest network | A router with guest-network controls and an administrator to configure them | It uses a separate network password, not the main credential. | Visitors who should not receive the household’s main Wi‑Fi details |
None of these options is available in every combination of device, software version, and router. If no connected device can share access and no guest network is available, ask the network owner or administrator to provide authorized access.

Have a connected Android phone share a QR code
- On the Android phone already connected, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Tap the connected network, then tap Share. The phone displays a QR code.
- On the device you want to connect, open a camera or Wi‑Fi scanner that supports Wi‑Fi QR codes and scan it. Follow the prompt to join.
Menu names can differ by manufacturer and Android version; Google notes that some steps work only on Android 12 or later. See Google’s Android instructions for sharing Wi‑Fi.
A network QR code is an access mechanism: someone who can use it may be able to join. Treat a code for your main network like a credential, and avoid posting it publicly if access should be limited.

Share between nearby Apple devices
Apple’s automatic Share Password prompt can pass the Wi‑Fi passcode from a connected device to a nearby recipient. For the documented flow, the host must be unlocked, connected to the network, and signed in to an Apple Account. The recipient must be nearby, signed in to an Apple Account, and in the host’s contacts. The recipient selects the network; the host taps Share Password. Check Apple’s requirements for sharing Wi‑Fi passwords if the prompt does not appear.
Apple’s security guide says compatible devices use Bluetooth Low Energy to discover the request, verify identity through a process similar to AirDrop, and send the passcode. Apple describes the result this way: “After identity is proven, the grantor sends the requestor the passcode, which can be used to join the network.” That identity check applies to this sharing flow; it does not prevent the credential from being exposed or shared by other means. Read Apple’s Wi‑Fi password-sharing security guide.

Use an Apple network QR code for other devices
An iPhone can show a QR code for a saved Wi‑Fi network. On the recipient device, scan it with a camera or scanner that recognizes Wi‑Fi network codes, then accept the join prompt. Apple documents the Show Network QR Code option in its iPhone guide to sharing a Wi‑Fi password. Use the current Passwords or Wi‑Fi controls shown in the guide for your iOS version; menu locations can change.

A camera-equipped Windows device can scan a Wi‑Fi QR code in the Camera app, open Settings, and let you confirm the connection. Microsoft documents the workflow in its Windows guide to connecting to Wi‑Fi. QR controls can depend on the Windows version and build; Microsoft describes the related update-dependent features in its Windows update notes. If you do not see the option, check the installed version rather than assuming every Windows PC has the same controls.

If a Windows PC is already connected or has saved the network, Windows also provides a way to show the saved Wi‑Fi password in network properties or under Manage known networks. This reveals the credential; it is different from sharing access without displaying it. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when supported and explains that a network security key helps prevent unauthorized access in its Wi‑Fi security guidance.
Ask the owner for a guest network
If the host does not want visitors to have the main Wi‑Fi password, a guest network is usually the clearest option. It has its own network name and password, which the owner can share separately. This is a router feature, not a setting available on every phone or access point.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
For Google Wifi and Nest Wifi, Google documents guest-network setup and sharing through the Google Home app; supported Nest display and voice flows are also available, with some regional limits. See Google’s instructions for setting up guest Wi‑Fi. Other routers may offer different controls. Do not assume a guest network automatically isolates every device: check the specific router’s documentation and settings before relying on isolation.

Why WPS is not a universal shortcut
Android Open Source Project documentation describes Wi‑Fi Easy Connect, also called Device Provisioning Protocol, as a way to onboard compatible devices without entering a password. It can use a QR code or an out-of-band method such as Bluetooth Low Energy or NFC, but both the equipment and setup must support it. This provisioning method is distinct from scanning a QR code generated by a phone already connected to a network.

- ✅Say Goodbye to WiFi Dead Zone - Extend the WiFi range to hard-to-reach areas, with 2 external High-gain antennas providing strong and reliable network in your home.
- ✅One touch connection - Press the WPS Button on routers then press WPS on Wifi Extender to make fast connection.
- ✅Plug and Play - Simply plug WiFi repeater into any outlet, then click WPS button on the repeater and on your router, then you can move the WiFi repeater anywhere.
- ✅Easy to Setup - Just press the WPS button on the WiFi extender and router, you can extend the wireless coverage within 8s. Or easy set up by smartphone. Smart signal lights help to find the best location for optimal WiFi coverage.
The same Android technical documentation says WPS was deprecated in Android 9. Because support varies and it is not a universal modern Android workflow, do not count on a WPS button as a guaranteed way to join. See the Android Open Source Project overview of Wi‑Fi Easy Connect.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a QR code that will not connect
- Confirm it is a Wi‑Fi code. A general QR scanner may show text instead of offering to join; try the camera or Wi‑Fi controls built into the recipient device.
- Check scanner support. Not every camera or operating-system version recognizes Wi‑Fi QR codes.
- Make sure the network is still available. The host should remain connected, and the recipient needs to be within range.
- For a hidden network, enter its details manually. Android documents adding a network with the exact SSID and security details. A secured network still requires legitimate credentials; a QR code does not remove that requirement. See Google’s Android Wi‑Fi instructions.
- Ask the owner or administrator for help. If the code is invalid, the network changed, or no compatible sharing option exists, the owner can provide authorized access or configure a guest network.
