To get online during a flight, keep Airplane Mode enabled, switch Wi‑Fi back on, join the airline’s onboard network, and complete the captive-portal sign-in or payment flow. Cellular service is not required, and you should not turn cellular radios back on just to open the portal.
The exact network name, web address, eligibility rules and availability depend on the operating airline, aircraft and route. The official airline instructions summarized here were checked on October 13, 2026; use your airline’s current flight-specific information if it differs.

What you need before trying to connect
In-flight Wi‑Fi only works when the aircraft is equipped for it and the airline has enabled the service for that flight. Availability can change at short notice. Follow the crew’s instructions about when electronic devices and onboard connectivity may be used; some flights do not activate Wi‑Fi immediately after boarding or during every phase of flight.
- A phone, tablet or laptop with Wi‑Fi capability.
- The airline’s onboard network name and portal address.
- Any account credentials, passenger details, membership information or payment method the portal requests.
- Enough battery to remain connected; no special adapter, portable router or replacement device is required.
Airline pages describe support for common iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices, but a particular aircraft or service can impose different limits. If the airline says Wi‑Fi is unavailable for your aircraft or route, changing a device setting cannot create a connection.

Connect in the correct order
- Wait for permission and service activation. Keep the device stowed or in the mode required by the crew until the airline allows use. If the crew says Wi‑Fi is not available, follow that instruction.
- Turn on Airplane Mode. This disables the cellular radio and other transmitting connections required to be off during flight.
- Turn Wi‑Fi back on while Airplane Mode remains on. Airplane Mode does not require Wi‑Fi to stay disabled. The airline setup instructions specifically pair Airplane Mode with separately enabled Wi‑Fi.
- Open the Wi‑Fi list. Select the network name supplied by the airline. Do not choose a similarly named network from another passenger, airport or nearby aircraft.
- Wait for the sign-in page. Many onboard systems display a captive portal automatically after the device joins the network. You may see a notification such as “Sign in to Wi‑Fi.”
- Open a browser if nothing appears. Stay connected to the onboard network and type the airline’s own portal address. There is no universal in-flight portal address; use the address for your carrier and service.
- Complete the requested steps. Depending on the airline and aircraft, this can mean entering passenger details, signing in to a loyalty account, verifying a booking, selecting messaging or another plan, accepting terms, or paying for access.
- Confirm the result. After the portal says you are connected, load a normal webpage or the service you intend to use. A Wi‑Fi icon alone means the device joined the aircraft network; it does not prove that an internet plan or free allowance has been activated.
Airline network names and portal addresses
These examples come from current official instructions. Capitalization shown in the network column is how the airline identifies the signal; your device may display it slightly differently. “Not stated” means the cited airline instructions do not establish that detail, not that the service necessarily lacks it.
| Airline | Onboard network shown in instructions | Portal address to enter manually | What the instructions say about access | Availability or device notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta Air Lines | DeltaWiFi.com |
deltawifi.com |
The onboard system may offer a SkyMiles sign-in or a flight pass. | Most Wi‑Fi-enabled Android, iOS, macOS and Windows devices are listed; onboard Wi‑Fi systems differ. |
| Air India | Air India Wi‑Fi |
wifi.airindia.com |
Enter passenger details and select an available plan. Plan prices are shown through the onboard portal. | Laptops, tablets and iOS or Android smartphones are named; availability can change at the last minute. |
| Japan Airlines | Japan Airlines |
jal-wifi.com |
Follow the portal’s current sign-in or access instructions. | Specific plan and device limits are not stated in the cited instructions. |
| Southwest Airlines | SouthwestWiFi |
SouthwestWiFi.com |
Use the onboard portal to see the access options offered on that flight. | Specific plan and device limits are not stated in the cited instructions. |
| American Airlines | The aainflight.com signal |
aainflight.com |
Eligible members may receive free access; other plans can also be offered. | The offer is limited by aircraft and route. |
| Cathay Pacific | Not stated in the cited instructions | wifi.cathaypacific.com |
Use the airline’s onboard page for the available access flow. | Network name, plan terms and device limits are not stated in the cited instructions. |
These are examples, not a universal list. Always prefer the network and address displayed by the operating airline for your specific flight. A codeshare may be sold by one airline but operated by another, and the operating carrier’s Wi‑Fi instructions are the ones that matter onboard.
Phone instructions
iPhone
- Open Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- In Settings, open Wi‑Fi and turn Wi‑Fi on again.
- Tap the airline’s network name. If iOS displays a sign-in notification, tap it.
- If no notification appears, open Safari and enter the airline’s portal address exactly as supplied for the flight.
- Finish the airline’s login, verification or payment steps, then return to the page or app you want to use.
Leave Airplane Mode on for the entire session. Re-enabling cellular service is neither necessary nor a reliable way to make the portal load.
Android phone
- Swipe down to Quick Settings and enable Airplane mode, or open Settings > Network & internet (the wording varies by manufacturer).
- Open the Wi‑Fi control, enable Wi‑Fi, and select the airline’s network.
- Accept the sign-in notification if Android shows one.
- Otherwise open your browser and enter the airline’s portal address manually.
- Complete the access flow and test a webpage before starting a call, download or streaming session.
Menu names differ among Android versions and manufacturers, but the required state is the same: Airplane Mode on, Wi‑Fi on, cellular radios still off.
Laptop instructions
Windows
- Select the network icon on the taskbar and turn on Airplane mode.
- Open the same network panel, turn Wi‑Fi back on, and select the airline’s onboard network.
- Choose the sign-in notification if Windows presents one. If it does not, open a browser and type the airline’s portal address.
- Complete the airline’s account, passenger, plan or payment requirements.
On some Windows laptops, a hardware wireless key or manufacturer utility can override the taskbar setting. If Wi‑Fi cannot be enabled while Airplane Mode is active, check that the laptop’s physical wireless switch or function key is on.
macOS
- Use the menu bar’s wireless controls or open System Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Enable Airplane Mode if your Mac or travel configuration provides it; otherwise follow the airline and crew instructions for disabling cellular-capable radios and leaving Wi‑Fi available.
- Select the airline’s network, then accept the captive-portal prompt or open a browser and enter the airline’s address manually.
- Sign in or purchase the offered access and verify that the browser can reach a normal webpage.
Mac menu labels can change between macOS releases. The important check is that the Mac is associated with the aircraft network and has completed the airline’s portal flow.

When the login page does not open
You joined the network but saw no portal
- Stay connected to the onboard network; do not switch to a hotel, airport or personal hotspot.
- Open a browser yourself.
- Enter the exact airline address for the flight, such as
deltawifi.com,wifi.airindia.com,jal-wifi.com,SouthwestWiFi.com,aainflight.comorwifi.cathaypacific.com. - If the page still does not load, disconnect from the onboard network, select it again, and repeat the manual address step.
There is no single fallback URL that works on every carrier. Entering an unrelated portal address can leave you connected to the network without reaching the correct sign-in service.
Recommended Free Tools
No airline network appears
- Confirm that the crew has announced Wi‑Fi activation; service may not be available during the current phase of flight.
- Check the operating airline’s flight-specific information. Aircraft assignment, route and onboard system determine availability.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on while leaving Airplane Mode enabled, then rescan the network list.
- If the network remains absent, ask the crew whether Wi‑Fi is offered on that aircraft. A device cannot connect to a service that the aircraft is not providing.
The portal says access is unavailable or asks for payment
Do not assume that every airline offers free full internet. Depending on the carrier and aircraft, the portal may provide free messaging, account-based access, a limited allowance or a paid plan. Follow the options displayed for that flight. Air India, for example, directs passengers to choose a plan and shows the applicable prices in its onboard portal; there is no universal price to quote in advance.
For American Airlines, the cited instructions distinguish free access for eligible members from other plan options. Delta’s instructions describe either a SkyMiles login or a flight pass, depending on the onboard system. Those differences are why a sign-in requirement or payment screen is not, by itself, a device failure.
You completed sign-in but still cannot browse
- Check whether you selected a messaging-only or otherwise limited option rather than general internet access.
- Return to the airline portal and verify that the session or plan is shown as active.
- Confirm that the device is still connected to the airline’s network and that Airplane Mode remains enabled.
- If the service is unavailable across the aircraft, the cause may be the onboard system, route or aircraft rather than your phone or laptop.
The connection drops during the flight
Reconnect to the same airline network and reopen its portal if requested. Onboard systems and coverage can vary by aircraft, route and flight stage, so airline instructions do not support a promise of constant service or a consistent speed. Save important work locally and avoid treating the connection as guaranteed.
How access rules differ by airline
Free, account-based and paid access are separate possibilities
“Wi‑Fi available” does not specify what you can do without payment. One flight may permit free messaging, another may require a loyalty-account login, and another may present paid passes. The portal is the authoritative place to see the terms for the aircraft you are on.

American’s published offer is limited by aircraft and route. Delta describes more than one onboard Wi‑Fi system. Air India warns that availability can change at the last minute. Similar qualifications apply broadly: a carrier’s general Wi‑Fi page cannot guarantee that every flight has the same network, portal, plan or price.

Codeshare and operating-carrier checks
Look at the flight details for the company actually operating the aircraft. If the ticket was purchased through a partner airline, use the operating carrier’s network name and portal once onboard. When in doubt, ask the crew which service is active rather than trying several similarly named networks.
Prepare before boarding
Check the operating airline’s current Wi‑Fi page or flight details before you leave for the airport. The aircraft assignment can affect whether a network is offered, and Air India’s instructions specifically warn that availability may change at the last minute. Save the correct portal address in a note, bookmark or password manager so you can type it without relying on a search engine after takeoff.
Have any required loyalty-account credentials available, and make sure the account can be accessed without a text message to your cellular number. Depending on the airline, the portal may request passenger details, a membership login, booking verification or payment. If you intend to pay, keep an accepted payment method available, but do not assume that paying in advance guarantees service on a particular aircraft.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Download documents, entertainment and other essential material before boarding. Airline instructions do not establish a consistent speed or uninterrupted connection, and a dropped session can interrupt a download or work task. A charged device is useful, but a power bank is only a general charging accessory; it does not create or improve the aircraft’s Wi‑Fi service.
What the Wi‑Fi icon does—and does not—tell you
Your device can show a Wi‑Fi connection while the portal is still waiting for acceptance, verification or payment. That icon confirms an association with the aircraft’s wireless network, not necessarily access to the wider internet. A normal webpage loading after the portal confirms your plan is a better test.
Conversely, a portal page may open while the service available to you is limited. Read whether the displayed option is messaging-only, a free allowance, an account benefit or a paid plan. Do not start a large download or streaming session until you know which access category you selected and whether the airline says that service is available on your aircraft.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Check the crew announcement and flight stage.
- Verify Airplane Mode is on and Wi‑Fi is on separately.
- Rescan and select the exact operating-airline network.
- Open the airline’s own portal address manually instead of waiting for a notification.
- Read the access terms and complete every passenger, account or payment step.
- Test an ordinary webpage.
- If the network is missing or the service fails for everyone, ask the crew and check aircraft or route eligibility rather than repeatedly changing device settings.
This sequence separates a device-setting problem from a service-availability problem. If the aircraft is not providing Wi‑Fi, no browser, cellular toggle or new accessory can substitute for it.
Security and practical limits
Use the official network name and portal address supplied by the airline. A familiar-looking network with a different spelling may be a separate hotspot. Keep sensitive work to a minimum on any shared public network, and do not enter account or payment information into a page that is not the airline’s expected portal.
Airline instructions establish the connection procedure, not a guaranteed performance level. They do not provide a consistent speed, latency figure or uninterrupted-service promise across all flights. Plan offline alternatives for documents, entertainment and navigation, especially when the work cannot tolerate a dropped connection.
Quick checklist
- Wait until the crew permits device use and Wi‑Fi is active.
- Enable Airplane Mode.
- Enable Wi‑Fi separately and keep cellular service off.
- Select the exact onboard network named by the operating airline.
- Use the automatic portal or enter the airline’s address manually.
- Complete the required account, passenger, verification or payment steps.
- Check whether your access is messaging-only, free, account-based or paid.
- If the network or portal is missing, verify aircraft, route and timing before troubleshooting the device.
Bottom line
In-flight Wi‑Fi is a two-switch process: Airplane Mode stays on while Wi‑Fi is turned back on. Join the operating airline’s network, open its specific portal address if the page does not appear, and follow the access terms shown for that aircraft. Availability, network names, prices and eligibility can change by flight, so the airline’s current instructions and the crew’s announcement take priority over any generic guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Wi‑Fi while my phone is in Airplane Mode?
Yes. Turn on Airplane Mode first, then enable Wi‑Fi separately and join the airline’s network. Leave cellular service off.
Why is the airplane Wi‑Fi login page not opening?
Stay connected to the onboard network, open a browser and enter the operating airline’s portal address manually. There is no universal in-flight portal URL.

Is in-flight Wi‑Fi always free?
No. Depending on the airline and aircraft, access may be free for eligible members, messaging-only, account-based, limited or paid. The onboard portal shows the terms for your flight.
What if I cannot see the airline’s Wi‑Fi network?
Check whether the crew has activated service, rescan with Airplane Mode still enabled, and verify the aircraft and route offer Wi‑Fi. Ask the crew if the network remains absent.
Which Wi‑Fi network should I select on a codeshare flight?
Use the network named by the airline operating the aircraft, not necessarily the airline that sold the ticket. Ask the crew if you are unsure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes connecting to the network prove I have internet access?
No. The Wi‑Fi icon only shows that your device joined the aircraft network. Complete the portal flow and load a normal webpage to confirm the selected access is active.
Can I turn cellular service back on to make the portal work?
No. Cellular service is not required for the portal. Keep Airplane Mode enabled and use Wi‑Fi separately, as the airline instructions direct.
Do I need a special adapter or portable router?
No. Airline instructions describe ordinary Wi‑Fi-enabled phones, tablets and laptops. A charging accessory may help battery life but does not enable the aircraft’s Wi‑Fi.
The Bottom Line
Keep Airplane Mode on, turn Wi‑Fi back on, select the operating airline’s exact network and complete its portal flow. If the page is missing, enter the airline’s own address manually; if the network is absent, check crew timing, aircraft and route availability before changing device settings.
