The quickest way to open a Linux VPS from Windows PowerShell is to run ssh username@vps-host-or-ip. Replace the username and host with the Linux account and the VPS hostname or public IP address. For a non-default SSH port, add -p; for a private key outside your normal SSH directory, add -i.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
ssh username@vps-host-or-ip
ssh -p 2222 username@vps-host-or-ip
ssh -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
This opens a normal Linux shell over an encrypted SSH connection. You need a reachable VPS address, a valid Linux account, and an SSH service listening on the selected port. The Linux server does not need PowerShell for an ordinary SSH session.

What you need before connecting
PowerShell is only the local terminal in this workflow. The connection succeeds only when the network path, server-side SSH service, account, and authentication method all agree.
- A VPS hostname or public IP address: Use the address supplied by your VPS administrator or provider. Confirm that DNS resolves to the intended server if you use a hostname.
- The Linux account name: SSH authenticates a specific account, such as an administrator-created user. The account name is not necessarily the same as your Windows username or the VPS provider’s billing email.
- An SSH port: The default is normally 22, but an administrator may configure another port. You must know the actual listening port before connecting.
- An SSH service: The VPS must be running an SSH server and allow connections through its operating-system firewall and any provider firewall or security group.
- Authentication credentials: The server may accept a password, a public key, or both. Public-key authentication is the recommended choice for routine administration.
- An OpenSSH client in PowerShell: If PowerShell reports that
sshis not recognized, install or enable an OpenSSH client and make sure its directory is on WindowsPATH.
Microsoft documents PowerShell 6 or later together with SSH on the participating computers for PowerShell remoting over SSH. A regular ssh.exe shell connection is a separate, simpler use of the OpenSSH client. See Microsoft’s PowerShell SSH remoting documentation for the version and remoting distinctions.

Connect to the VPS with the basic SSH command
Open PowerShell and run the command from the introduction with the Linux username before the @ and the VPS hostname or IP after it. For example, if the account is deploy and the server address is 203.0.113.25, the command is:
ssh [email protected]
SSH contacts the server, negotiates encryption, and then starts authentication. If the server permits password login, PowerShell displays a password prompt. Characters are intentionally not echoed while you type; this is normal. Press Enter when the password is complete.
After successful authentication, your PowerShell window becomes an interactive Linux shell. Commands you type are interpreted by the remote Linux shell until you exit the session. Type exit or press Ctrl+D to close the SSH session and return to the local PowerShell prompt.
Use a non-default SSH port
If SSH listens on a port other than 22, specify it with lowercase -p immediately followed by the port number:
ssh -p 2222 username@vps-host-or-ip
The port number must match the SSH service configured on the VPS and the port allowed by the VPS provider’s firewall or security group. A correct username and password cannot compensate for a blocked or incorrect port. If you do not know whether the administrator changed the port, obtain that value from the server documentation or console rather than guessing.
Accept and verify the server host key
On the first connection to a host, SSH normally shows the server’s host-key fingerprint and asks whether you want to continue. This is a trust decision, not a routine confirmation to click through blindly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Pause at the fingerprint prompt.
- Obtain the expected fingerprint from the VPS provider’s web or out-of-band console, or from a trusted administrator.
- Compare the displayed fingerprint with that trusted value.
- Accept the key only when the values match.
After acceptance, the SSH client stores the host key in the current Windows user’s known-hosts database. Future connections compare the server’s key with that saved value. If a previously known host suddenly reports that its key has changed, stop and investigate before removing the old entry. A rebuilt VPS, a changed DNS or IP target, or a genuine interception attempt can all produce that warning. Do not suppress the warning merely to make the connection proceed.

Log in with a password
Password authentication works only when the server allows it for the account. At the prompt, enter the Linux account password; PowerShell does not display the characters or asterisks.
If the server rejects the password, check the inputs and the server policy in this order:
- Confirm that the Linux username is exact, including capitalization where the account system distinguishes it.
- Confirm that you are connecting to the intended hostname or IP and SSH port.
- Check that the account exists, is enabled, and is permitted to use SSH.
- Ask the administrator to verify the server’s
PasswordAuthenticationsetting. Microsoft showsPasswordAuthentication yesas the SSH daemon configuration option when password login is enabled. - Check the VPS firewall, provider firewall, and SSH daemon logs if you administer the server.
Password login is convenient for a first test, but public-key authentication avoids sending a reusable password during routine administration and is easier to use safely in scripts when configured correctly.
Set up public-key authentication from PowerShell
SSH keys use a private key on Windows and a matching public key on the Linux account. The private key proves your identity; the public key is the only part that belongs on the VPS.
1. Generate an Ed25519 key pair
In PowerShell, run:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Accept the proposed file location if it is suitable, or choose another path that you can protect and remember. You may set a passphrase when prompted. The command creates a private key and a public-key file whose name ends in .pub.
2. Protect the private key
Keep the private key on the Windows computer. Never paste it into the VPS, upload it to a ticket, commit it to source control, or send it to another person. The .pub file is the shareable half; the private-key file is not.
Windows OpenSSH also enforces access controls on private keys. Store the file in a location accessible only to your Windows account and correct any overly broad permissions if the client refuses to use it. Microsoft includes Windows ACL handling in its SSH troubleshooting guidance.

3. Install the public key for the Linux account
Copy the entire one-line contents of the generated .pub file and append it to the remote account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. Preserve it as one line; do not wrap it in quotes or alter the key text.
You can place the key through an existing console session, a provider’s browser terminal, or an administrator-approved transfer method. If password SSH login already works, you can first connect with the password and then create or edit the file from that session.
4. Correct ownership and permissions on Linux
The Linux account must own its SSH directory and authorized-keys file. A common secure baseline is:
chmod 700 ~/.ssh
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Also verify that the account’s home directory and the files are owned by the intended user. An SSH daemon can ignore a key when the directory or file is writable by other users, owned by the wrong account, or located at an unexpected path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5. Select the private key when connecting
If the private key is in the default SSH directory and has a conventional name, the client may find it automatically. When it is elsewhere or has a different name, specify it explicitly with -i:
ssh -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
PowerShell expands $HOME to your Windows home directory. Use the actual key path if you saved the file under another name. Combine -i with -p when the VPS uses a non-default port:
ssh -p 2222 -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
Understand the two SSH workflows
“SSH from PowerShell” can mean either an ordinary remote Linux shell or PowerShell remoting transported by SSH. They are related but not interchangeable.

| Aspect | Ordinary SSH shell | PowerShell remoting over SSH |
|---|---|---|
| Local command | ssh username@host |
New-PSSession, Enter-PSSession, or Invoke-Command with SSH parameters |
| Remote interface | The Linux account’s normal shell | A PowerShell session on the remote host |
| Linux PowerShell requirement | None | The remote host must have PowerShell and expose an SSH PowerShell subsystem |
| Best use | Interactive Linux administration and commands | PowerShell-native automation across supported Linux and Windows systems |
| Transport | Direct OpenSSH client connection | SSH carrying the PowerShell remoting protocol |
For remoting, Microsoft’s documented server configuration exposes a subsystem similar to:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Subsystem powershell /usr/bin/pwsh -sshs -NoLogo
That subsystem requirement is why a normal Linux VPS can accept ssh.exe connections even when it has no PowerShell installation, while PowerShell remoting over SSH cannot. Microsoft explains the distinction and the New-PSSession, Enter-PSSession, and Invoke-Command workflow in its PowerShell remoting over SSH documentation.
Choose the connection method for the job
| Decision | Use this approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive Linux administration | ssh.exe to the account and host |
Reachable address, listening port, and account authentication |
| No password should be entered repeatedly | Ed25519 public-key authentication | Private key path, matching public key, ownership, and permissions |
| Server uses a custom port | Add -p port |
Provider firewall and sshd are using the same port |
| Run one remote command from a script | Use SSH with the command after the host | Authentication, quoting, exit status, and non-interactive server policy |
| Run PowerShell commands remotely | PowerShell remoting over SSH | PowerShell 6 or later and a configured remote PowerShell SSH subsystem |
| First connection to a server | Stop for host-key verification | Fingerprint from a trusted, separate channel |
Do not choose PowerShell remoting merely because the local terminal is PowerShell. If your goal is to manage Linux with commands such as package, service, or file operations, an ordinary SSH shell is usually the direct workflow.
Run a single remote command or a repeatable task
An interactive session is not required for every task. SSH can authenticate, run a command on the Linux host, print its output, and return to PowerShell. Keep the host, port, key, and command explicit in scripts so that a script does not accidentally target the wrong machine.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Use this pattern only after interactive access and host-key verification work. Test commands manually first, quote arguments carefully for the two shells involved, and decide how your automation should handle a password prompt, a missing key, a changed host key, or a nonzero remote exit status. Public-key authentication is generally the practical choice for unattended tasks, but the private key still requires strict protection.

“ssh is not recognized”
PowerShell cannot find the OpenSSH client. Install or enable an OpenSSH client on Windows, then confirm that its executable directory is on PATH. Open a new PowerShell window after changing the installation or environment and try ssh again. This error occurs before any network connection, so changing the VPS password or firewall will not fix it.
Connection timed out
A timeout usually means that packets are not reaching an SSH listener or that a firewall is silently dropping them. Check all of these values:
Best Value
- The VPS public IP or DNS name, including whether the hostname resolves to the current server.
- The port supplied to
-p, if any. - The provider firewall, security group, or network access list.
- The Linux host firewall.
- Whether the SSH daemon is running and listening on the expected interface and port.
Use the provider’s console if network access is unavailable; it lets an administrator inspect the SSH service without relying on the failed remote path.
Recommended Free Tools
Connection refused
“Connection refused” generally means the host was reachable but no service accepted the connection on that address and port, or an active firewall rejected it. Recheck the port and confirm that sshd is running. A provider firewall rule that allows a different port does not help if the Linux daemon is listening elsewhere.
Permission denied (publickey,password)
This message means the server reached the authentication stage but rejected the available credentials. Work through the following checklist:
- Verify the Linux username; a correct key for a different account will still fail.
- Verify that the private-key path in
-iis the intended file, not the public.pubfile. - Compare the public-key line in
~/.ssh/authorized_keyswith the public half of the selected private key. - Check ownership and permissions on the home directory,
~/.ssh, andauthorized_keys. - Confirm that the server permits the selected authentication method and that the account is enabled for SSH.
- If using a password, confirm the server’s
PasswordAuthenticationpolicy and the account password.
The key is ignored
Run a verbose client trace while explicitly selecting the key:
ssh -vvv -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
Read the trace for the identity files offered and the point at which the server rejects them. If you administer the VPS, inspect the server’s SSH logs at the same time. The trace can reveal a wrong path, an unusable private-key permission, a host mismatch, or a server policy that disallows public-key login.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The host key changed
Do not delete the old known-host entry automatically. First verify whether the VPS was rebuilt, its IP or DNS target changed, or the SSH host keys were intentionally rotated. If none of those explanations is trusted, treat the warning as a possible interception attempt and contact the administrator through a separate channel.
Server-side checks when you control the VPS
Use the VPS provider’s console or another administrative path when SSH itself is inaccessible. Microsoft’s Linux SSH setup example covers installing openssh-client and openssh-server, editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config, selecting authentication methods, and restarting sshd.service. Follow the configuration appropriate to your Linux distribution rather than copying settings blindly.
For a password-based test, verify the daemon’s PasswordAuthentication setting and restart the service after an approved configuration change. For key login, verify the account’s home-directory path, ownership, the exact one-line authorized key, and restrictive permissions on the SSH directory and file. Then confirm that the provider firewall and host firewall allow the same port configured in sshd_config.
Microsoft’s setup reference is available at Linux SSH setup for PowerShell remoting. Although the page discusses remoting, its installation, daemon configuration, authentication, and service-management details are useful when diagnosing the underlying SSH service.

Security practices that prevent avoidable lockouts
- Verify fingerprints: Treat the first-use host-key prompt as a security check and verify it out of band.
- Prefer keys for routine work: Use an Ed25519 key pair and protect the private half with a passphrase where practical.
- Keep a recovery path: Before changing SSH ports, disabling passwords, or editing
sshd_config, keep the VPS console or another administrative route available. - Change one variable at a time: When diagnosing a failure, change the username, port, key, and firewall rules separately so you can identify the actual cause.
- Limit key exposure: Never copy a private key to the server or place it in scripts, shared folders, tickets, or repositories.
- Use the least-privileged account: Connect as the intended administrative or deployment user rather than assuming the provider’s default account is correct.
- Record the real port and host: Keep the approved hostname, port, account, and key path together in your secure operating notes.
A complete first-connection checklist
- Obtain the VPS hostname or IP, Linux username, SSH port, and permitted authentication method.
- Confirm that PowerShell can find an OpenSSH client by running
ssh. - Start with
ssh username@host, adding-p portwhen the port is not 22. - At the first host-key prompt, compare the fingerprint with a trusted provider or administrator record.
- Authenticate with the permitted password or with
-iand the matching private key. - Once the shell opens, run a harmless identification command and then type
exitto close the session. - If authentication fails, repeat with the exact username, port, and key path, then use
-vvvand server logs rather than guessing.
For a standard Linux shell, the essential workflow remains the direct OpenSSH command. PowerShell remoting is appropriate only when you specifically need PowerShell on the remote host and have configured the required subsystem.
