Connect that plug to the device’s headphone output. If the output is the larger 6.3 mm socket found on many audio interfaces, attach the included 6.3 mm stereo adapter first. Turn the device volume down before connecting, start playback, and raise the level gradually.
A phone or laptop without a compatible headphone jack needs a port-matched adapter or a USB audio device that provides headphone output. The correct accessory depends on the exact device model, so check its documentation rather than assuming that every USB-C or other adapter will work.

What you need before connecting
The connection is analog and wired: there is no wireless pairing procedure. The cable is permanently attached to the headphones, so you do not replace it with a shorter cable or a Bluetooth receiver as part of the normal setup. Audio-Technica identifies the ATH-R30x as open-back reference headphones and specifies the following connection hardware:
| Item | Specification or purpose |
|---|---|
| Headphone cable | Fixed 3.0 m cable |
| Headphone plug | 3.5 mm gold-plated stereo mini-plug |
| Included adapter | 6.3 mm stereo adapter for a compatible 6.3 mm headphone output |
| Required device connection | A headphone output, not an audio input |
Before inserting the plug, identify the jack you intend to use and confirm that it is marked for headphones or has a headphone symbol. A microphone input, line input, instrument input, or other recording socket is not the same connection. The user manual’s instruction is: "Lower the volume on the device you intend to use, then connect the ‘Input plug’ to the device’s headphone jack."

The universal connection procedure
- Stop or pause playback. This prevents a sudden sound from starting while the plug is being inserted.
- Turn the device’s headphone volume down. Use the phone, laptop, or interface’s headphone-level control. If the device has separate master and headphone controls, lower the headphone control first.
- Check the jack size. Use the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm plug in a 3.5 mm headphone output. For a 6.3 mm headphone output, screw or push the supplied 6.3 mm stereo adapter onto the 3.5 mm plug as designed, then insert the larger end.
- Insert the plug fully and straight. Do not force a connector that does not match the socket. A partially inserted plug can produce one-sided or distorted sound.
- Select the correct playback output. On a computer or interface with multiple outputs, make sure the operating system or audio application is sending sound to the jack where the ATH-R30x is connected.
- Start audio at a quiet level. Play a familiar track or system sound and increase the headphone level gradually until it is comfortable.
- Follow the connected device’s manual. The ATH-R30x manual establishes the headphone connection, but controls, port behavior, and output selection vary by phone, laptop, and interface.
Connecting the ATH-R30x to a phone
Phone with a 3.5 mm headphone jack
Lower the phone’s volume, insert the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm stereo plug directly into the phone’s headphone jack, start playback, and raise the level slowly. No additional adapter is needed when the phone has a compatible headphone output.
If the phone uses a headset-style or multifunction jack, confirm in the phone documentation that it supports headphone playback. The ATH-R30x is a stereo headphone; the documented connection is to a headphone jack. The manual does not describe the headphones as providing a microphone input, so do not assume that the phone can use the ATH-R30x as a headset microphone.
Phone without a 3.5 mm jack
You need either a port-compatible adapter or a USB audio device that provides a headphone output. The adapter must match the phone’s physical port and support audio output; a cable that only provides charging or data is not sufficient. Because phones differ in connector standards, operating-system behavior, and accessory support, the exact adapter cannot be selected without knowing the phone model.
- Look up the phone’s documentation to determine which port is available and whether it supports wired audio accessories.
- Choose an adapter or USB audio device explicitly described as providing headphone output for that port.
- Connect the adapter to the phone before inserting the ATH-R30x, unless the phone documentation specifies a different order.
- Keep the phone volume low, plug the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm connector into the adapter’s headphone socket, and raise the level gradually.
Do not assume that every USB-C adapter works with every phone. Some accessories require particular audio support, and the phone may need to recognize the adapter before routing sound to it. If the phone continues using its speaker, check its output-selection controls and the accessory requirements in the phone manual.

Connecting the ATH-R30x to a laptop
Laptop with a 3.5 mm headphone jack
Reduce the laptop’s output volume, insert the 3.5 mm plug into the headphone socket, and select that output in the operating system if it does not switch automatically. Many laptops label a combined headphone/microphone socket with a headset icon; verify in the laptop documentation that it supports headphone playback before relying on it.
Once audio is playing, use the laptop’s system volume control to set a safe starting level. Applications can have their own volume controls, so check both the operating-system mixer and the application if the result is unexpectedly quiet or loud.
Laptop without a 3.5 mm jack
Use a port-compatible adapter or USB audio device with a headphone output. The laptop’s available port and supported audio functions determine which accessory is suitable. A USB-C connector describes the physical shape, not guaranteed audio behavior, so do not treat all USB-C adapters as interchangeable.
- Check the laptop manual or manufacturer specifications for the port’s supported audio functions.
- Connect a compatible adapter or USB audio device.
- Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the adapter or USB device as the output if it is not selected automatically.
- Set the output level low, insert the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm plug into the adapter’s headphone jack, and test with audio.
If a video-call or recording application has its own device menu, select the laptop’s headphone output for monitoring there as well. The ATH-R30x connection supplies playback; the manual does not document a microphone function.

Connecting the ATH-R30x to an audio interface
Interface with a 3.5 mm headphone output
Turn the interface’s headphone level down, insert the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm plug directly into the interface’s headphone output, and then increase the headphone control while audio plays. Use the interface’s headphone output rather than a line input or an instrument input.
Interface with a 6.3 mm headphone output
Attach the included 6.3 mm stereo adapter to the ATH-R30x’s 3.5 mm plug, then connect the adapter to the interface’s 6.3 mm headphone socket. The adapter is supplied for this purpose, so it is not normally an extra purchase for a compatible interface.
Interfaces can have separate monitor, main-output, and headphone controls. Adjust the control that governs the socket where the ATH-R30x is connected. If the interface has a software mixer, make sure the desired playback channel is routed to the headphone bus. Consult the interface manual for its output assignment and level controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not confuse outputs and inputs
A headphone output sends audio to the ATH-R30x. An input receives audio from another device and will not drive the headphones. If a socket is labelled line in, mic in, instrument in, or input, it is not the connection described by the ATH-R30x manual. When a panel has several similar sockets, follow the headphone icon or the interface documentation.

Which adapter do you need?
| Device situation | Connection to use | Extra accessory |
|---|---|---|
| Phone with compatible 3.5 mm headphone jack | ATH-R30x 3.5 mm plug directly into the jack | None |
| Laptop with compatible 3.5 mm headphone jack | ATH-R30x 3.5 mm plug directly into the jack | None |
| Audio interface with 3.5 mm headphone output | ATH-R30x 3.5 mm plug directly into the headphone output | None |
| Audio interface with 6.3 mm headphone output | ATH-R30x plug fitted with the supplied adapter | Use the included 6.3 mm stereo adapter |
| Phone or laptop with no compatible headphone output | ATH-R30x connected through a compatible audio accessory | Port-matched adapter or USB audio device with headphone output; model-dependent |
The deciding questions are simple: What physical port does the device provide? Does that port actually provide headphone output? Is the output 3.5 mm or 6.3 mm? Is a suitable adapter already included? Answer those questions from the device documentation before buying anything.
Volume, hearing, and connection safety
- Lower volume before insertion. This is the explicit safety step in the ATH-R30x manual and prevents a high-level signal from reaching your ears unexpectedly.
- Raise the level gradually. Start playback quietly and increase only as needed. If you need unusually high volume, stop and check the selected output, plug seating, and device settings rather than immediately turning the control to maximum.
- Use the correct socket. Connecting to a headphone output avoids trying to drive the headphones from an unsuitable input or connector.
- Keep the long cable clear. The fixed cable is 3.0 m, which is useful at a desk or interface but can catch on chair wheels, stands, and other equipment. Route it so it is not pulled sharply from the headphone housing or device jack.
- Remove the plug by its connector. Grip the plug or adapter body instead of pulling the cable.
- Remember that the design is open-back. Open-back headphones allow sound to escape into the room and let outside sound reach you. They are therefore better suited to an appropriate listening environment than to situations requiring isolation, regardless of which device is connected.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No sound at all
- Confirm that the plug is fully inserted into a headphone output.
- Check that the device is not muted and that its output volume is above zero.
- On a laptop or phone using an adapter, select the adapter or USB audio device as the active output.
- On an audio interface, verify that the playback signal is routed to the headphone bus and that the headphone control is raised.
- Test the same ATH-R30x connection with another known-good source, or test the device’s headphone output with another pair of headphones, to isolate whether the issue is the source, accessory, or headphones.
Sound in only one side
Push the connector fully into the socket and, if present, reseat the 6.3 mm adapter. A plug that is not fully engaged can leave one channel disconnected. If the problem persists, test without the adapter on a compatible 3.5 mm output and check the source device’s balance control.
Sound is too quiet
Check the device’s headphone volume, the application volume, and any separate interface headphone control. Confirm that the adapter is a stereo headphone adapter and that the ATH-R30x plug is in a headphone output rather than a line-level or input socket. Do not infer that a different connector size alone will increase volume; the source output and its settings determine the available level.
Sound is unexpectedly loud or distorted
Pause playback and lower the device or interface headphone level before reconnecting. Then check whether an application, software mixer, or interface monitor control is adding gain. Increase the level slowly only after the signal is clean.

The phone or laptop still uses its speakers
Disconnect and reconnect the adapter, then inspect the operating system’s output menu. Some devices require a compatible audio accessory rather than a passive mechanical plug converter. Check the phone or laptop documentation for supported wired-audio accessories and confirm that the adapter is intended to provide headphone output.
The plug does not fit
Do not force it. The ATH-R30x has a 3.5 mm plug; a 6.3 mm interface socket requires the included adapter. A phone or laptop with another port requires a compatible audio adapter or USB audio device. A connector that physically fits may still lack headphone-output support, so verify both size and function.
You need a microphone for calls
The ATH-R30x manual documents headphone playback and does not describe a microphone input. Use the computer or phone’s built-in microphone, an external microphone, or a supported headset accessory for voice capture while selecting the ATH-R30x as the listening output.

What the documented specifications do and do not establish
The published connection information establishes the fixed 3.0 m cable, 3.5 mm gold-plated stereo mini-plug, included 6.3 mm stereo adapter, and use with a device’s headphone jack. Those are product specifications, not an independent measurement of loudness, compatibility with every phone, or performance from every interface.
Port availability and adapter support remain device-specific. A particular phone or laptop may omit a headphone jack, require a digital audio accessory, or expose a multifunction port with its own compatibility rules. The safest way to resolve that part of the setup is to check the exact device manual and then use the connection sequence above.
