To connect the Astell & Kern PD5 to wireless headphones or a speaker, put the receiver into its Bluetooth pairing mode, enable Bluetooth in the PD5’s settings, choose the receiver when it appears, and wait for the connected status before playing music. The receiver must be discoverable, and the codec ultimately used is limited by the capabilities shared by both devices.
What the PD5 can connect to
Astell&Kern lists the PD5 with Bluetooth 5.3, the A2DP and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles, and support for aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. That specification is suitable for sending the player’s audio to compatible wireless headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. It does not mean that every receiver can use every listed codec: the headphones or speaker must support the same codec, and the connection may select another common option.

| PD5 capability | What it means for pairing and playback |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth 5.3 | The player uses a current Bluetooth radio generation. Bluetooth version alone does not guarantee a particular audio codec or range with every receiver. |
| A2DP | The profile used for stereo Bluetooth audio from the PD5 to headphones or a speaker. |
| AVRCP | The control profile that can allow compatible receivers to exchange playback-control commands with the player. Available controls depend on both devices. |
| aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC | Advertised codec choices. The negotiated codec depends on the receiver and the connection; the presence of a codec in the PD5 specification is not a promise that it will be selected. |
Astell&Kern also describes a separate BT Sink function. BT Sink reverses the direction described in this guide: another device sends audio into the PD5. It is not the setting you need when the PD5 is the source sending music to wireless headphones or a speaker.
Before you start
Have the following ready:
- The PD5 with enough battery for setup and playback.
- Headphones or a speaker that supports Bluetooth audio reception.
- The receiver’s instructions. Pairing controls vary: some products use a dedicated Bluetooth button, while others require holding a power or multifunction button.
- The receiver close to the PD5 during first pairing. Proximity makes discovery easier and reduces avoidable radio problems.
- The receiver disconnected from phones, tablets, computers or televisions that might automatically reclaim it.
Pairing mode is different from simply switching a receiver on. A device that is powered on but already paired may not advertise itself to a new source. Use the receiver’s own instructions to enter its discoverable or pairing state, usually indicated by a flashing status light or an audible announcement.

Pair the PD5 with Bluetooth headphones
- Prepare the headphones. Turn them on and activate Bluetooth pairing mode using the headphone manufacturer’s controls. If they reconnect to a phone or computer instead, disconnect them there or temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that nearby device.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the PD5. On the player, open the system settings area, turn Bluetooth on, and open the list of available devices. The official product information confirms Bluetooth support, but the accessible manual listing does not expose the exact on-screen wording; treat this as the expected settings action rather than a verified transcription of every menu label.
- Wait for discovery. Leave the headphones in pairing mode while the PD5 scans. Their advertised name should appear in the available-device list. If several entries are shown, use the name that matches the headphones and not an unrelated nearby device.
- Select the headphones. Tap or select the headphone name and wait for the PD5 to report a connected state. Do not start troubleshooting while the list still shows the device as merely available.
- Start playback. Play a track at a moderate volume, then adjust the PD5 and headphone volume controls as necessary. Confirm that sound is coming from the headphones rather than the PD5’s local output.
After a successful first pairing, many Bluetooth receivers remember the PD5. Future connections normally require turning on both products and allowing the receiver to reconnect, although the exact behavior depends on which device was most recently used and whether another saved device is nearby.
Connect the PD5 to a Bluetooth speaker
- Put the speaker in pairing mode. Use the speaker’s Bluetooth or pairing control, following its own instructions. A speaker that is already connected to a phone may not appear to the PD5 until that connection is released.
- Enable Bluetooth on the PD5. Open the player’s Bluetooth settings and switch the radio on. Then display the available-device list.
- Choose the speaker. Select the speaker’s name when it appears and wait for the connected indication. Keep the speaker close to the player until this completes.
- Test with a track. Begin playback quietly, verify that the speaker is producing the audio, and then set a comfortable listening level. If the speaker has its own volume control, both the PD5’s level and the speaker’s level may affect the result.
No particular speaker model or a model-specific pairing sequence is established here, so use the speaker’s manual for its button timing, LED meanings and procedures for clearing old pairings.
If the headphones or speaker does not appear
Work through these checks in order. They are general Bluetooth recovery steps; the readable PD5 support page does not provide a screen-by-screen troubleshooting sequence.
Confirm pairing mode is still active
Many receivers leave pairing mode after a short timeout. Reactivate pairing immediately before opening the PD5’s available-device list. If the receiver’s indicator has stopped flashing or its voice prompt no longer says it is ready to pair, start the receiver’s pairing procedure again.

Break an existing connection
A receiver commonly advertises to a new source only when it is not connected elsewhere. Check nearby phones, tablets, laptops and televisions. Disconnect the headphones or speaker from those devices, or temporarily disable Bluetooth on them, then put the receiver back into pairing mode.
Restart discovery
Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the PD5’s settings, then restart pairing mode on the receiver. This refreshes the discovery attempt without changing audio files or other player content.
Reduce the number of nearby candidates
Move other paired receivers away or switch them off while pairing. A crowded list can make it easy to select the wrong entry, and a nearby device that automatically reconnects can take the receiver away before the PD5 completes discovery.
Restart both ends if the list remains empty
Power-cycle the headphones or speaker and the PD5, then repeat the sequence: receiver pairing mode first, PD5 Bluetooth on second, device selection third. If the receiver pairs successfully with another source but never appears to the PD5, check the receiver’s compatibility documentation and consult Astell&Kern support rather than assuming that a particular menu label or reset procedure exists.

If it says connected but you hear no music
- Verify that a track is actually playing and that neither the PD5 nor the receiver is muted.
- Check the receiver’s own volume control; some headphones and speakers retain a very low volume from their previous connection.
- Look at the PD5’s connection status and make sure the intended receiver remains connected rather than merely saved in the device list.
- Pause and resume playback after the connection completes. If the receiver entered a call or voice-assistant mode, exit that mode using its controls.
- Disconnect and pair again if audio remains silent. Repeating discovery is preferable to changing unrelated player settings when the connection status is uncertain.
The exact PD5 output and volume labels are not visible in the accessible manual listing, so this guide does not assign unverified names to particular controls.
Understanding codec selection and sound quality
The PD5 advertises aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. A receiver must support a codec for that codec to be usable, and the final choice can also depend on the connection conditions and the implementations in both products. A receiver that supports only SBC, for example, cannot negotiate LDAC simply because the PD5 lists LDAC.
| What you know | What you can and cannot conclude |
|---|---|
| The PD5 lists several codecs | You know the player is designed to work with receivers implementing those formats; you do not know which one a particular receiver will choose. |
| The headphones or speaker lists one or more of the same codecs | There is codec overlap, but the negotiated mode still needs to be established by the live connection. |
| A source file is high resolution | The file’s resolution does not prove that Bluetooth transmits it losslessly or at the same resolution. Bluetooth encoding and the negotiated codec remain relevant. |
| The connection is stable | Stability does not identify the codec. Do not infer LDAC, aptX HD or another mode from sound alone. |
What Hi-Fi? reported streaming a 24-bit/96kHz FLAC rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” from the PD5 to Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 wireless over-ear headphones. That is an independent reviewer’s listening example showing that this type of Bluetooth playback worked in the review setup. The report does not identify the codec negotiated, does not constitute a laboratory measurement and does not guarantee compatibility with every headphone or speaker.

| Priority | Bluetooth headphones | Bluetooth speaker |
|---|---|---|
| Listening situation | Private listening, travel and late-night use without filling a room with sound. | Shared room playback where several people need to hear the music. |
| Codec check | Compare the headphone’s supported codecs with aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC listed for the PD5. | Perform the same codec comparison; many speakers prioritize convenience and battery life over a wide codec list. |
| Pairing convenience | Choose a model with a clear pairing button or voice prompt if you frequently switch between sources. | Choose a model whose Bluetooth indicator and pairing controls are easy to access when the speaker is placed across a room. |
| Evidence available for this guide | What Hi-Fi? reported a PD5 listening test with Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3; no codec was identified. | No particular speaker model was evaluated in the supplied material. |
Do not buy a receiver solely because its marketing lists a high-resolution codec. Confirm that the codec is supported on both sides and consider how easily you can place the receiver into pairing mode when it has to be moved between the PD5 and other sources.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.BT Sink is different from sending PD5 audio
The PD5 product information describes BT Sink as a way for an external device to send audio to the player. For example, a phone could act as the source while the PD5 receives that Bluetooth stream. The headphones-and-speaker procedure in this article uses the opposite direction: the PD5 is the source, and the headphones or speaker is the receiver. Selecting a BT Sink function when your goal is wireless headphone playback can therefore lead you to the wrong connection mode.
Using the official manual without guessing menu labels
Astell&Kern’s English support page lists a “[PD5] User Manual” and a PD5_Manual.zip archive, displayed with the date 10.07.2026. The page instructs readers to download the attached PDF, but its accessible text does not expose the attachment’s pages. Consequently, exact names such as the PD5’s Bluetooth submenu, scan button or confirmation wording are not established here.
Download the current manual from Astell&Kern’s support page and use its Bluetooth section if your firmware presents different labels from the general actions described above. Firmware updates can change menu wording or connection behavior, so follow the instructions for the version installed on your player rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Disconnecting, switching and reconnecting
Switch from headphones to a speaker
Stop playback, disconnect or turn off the headphones, place the speaker in pairing mode, and select the speaker from the PD5’s available-device list. If the speaker does not appear, make sure the headphones are no longer automatically reconnecting to the PD5 or another nearby device.
Return to headphones
Turn off or disconnect the speaker, reactivate pairing or reconnection on the headphones, and select the headphones if the PD5 displays more than one saved receiver. Confirm the connected status before resuming music.
Prevent unwanted automatic connections
When several receivers have been paired previously, leave only the desired receiver powered on during reconnection. If a receiver repeatedly connects to another source, disable Bluetooth on that source while you switch listening devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the PD5 connection does not guarantee
- Bluetooth 5.3 does not make every older or newer receiver compatible with every codec.
- A codec list does not reveal which codec a live connection selected.
- A 24-bit/96kHz music file does not prove that the wireless link is lossless or carries the file at its original resolution.
- A successful connection to one headphone model does not guarantee that every speaker or headphone will pair in the same way.
- The BT Sink feature is incoming audio to the PD5, not the outgoing headphone or speaker connection described here.
For the normal use case, the reliable sequence is receiver pairing mode, PD5 Bluetooth enabled, receiver selected, connected status confirmed, then playback. If discovery repeatedly fails after removing competing connections and restarting both devices, use the receiver’s instructions and the current PD5 manual rather than inventing a different menu route.
