To connect PULSE Explore earbuds to a PS5, use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter: turn on the console, insert the adapter into a USB Type-A port, then remove both earbuds from their charging case. The adapter is paired with the earbuds out of the box, and a solid-white adapter indicator confirms the connection. Sony’s complete instructions are available on its PULSE Explore support page.
What you need
The documented PS5 setup requires four things:
- PULSE Explore wireless earbuds and their charging case.
- The included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Sony says this adapter is already paired with the earbuds, so normal PS5 setup does not require buying or pairing another adapter.
- A PS5 with an available USB Type-A port. The adapter plugs directly into the console.
- Enough charge in the case and earbuds to complete setup.
The adapter is the important distinction. Sony’s documented PS5 procedure uses PlayStation Link rather than a generic Bluetooth dongle. Bluetooth remains useful for compatible phones, tablets and other devices, but it is not the connection method Sony specifies for connecting PULSE Explore to a PS5.

Connect PULSE Explore to your PS5
Follow these steps in order. Keep both earbuds in the case until the console and adapter are ready.
- Turn on the PS5. Wait until the console has finished starting up and you can use the home screen.
- Leave both earbuds in the charging case. Closing the lid is not required for the next step, but both earbuds should be docked before you connect the adapter.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into one of the PS5’s USB Type-A ports. Use the adapter supplied with the earbuds for the ordinary PS5 setup.
- Remove both earbuds from the case. Taking out both sides starts the search for the available PlayStation Link connection.
- Complete any on-screen instructions. If the PS5 displays a setup prompt, follow it to finish the connection.
- Check the adapter indicator. A solid-white status light on the PlayStation Link adapter indicates that the earbuds have connected.
Sony says the earbuds search for an available connection for 30 seconds. If they do not find one during that window, they turn off. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to make them search again, then watch for the adapter’s solid-white indicator. What the PlayStation Link adapter does
The USB adapter provides the PlayStation Link wireless connection between the console and earbuds. It is not just a generic Bluetooth receiver. Sony supplies the adapter already paired to the PULSE Explore earbuds, which is why the standard setup can be completed by plugging it in and removing the earbuds from the case.

Do not buy a second adapter simply because the first one came with the earbuds. The included unit is the one intended for the ordinary PS5 connection. A second adapter only becomes relevant if you are deliberately creating another PlayStation Link connection, for example for a computer, and want to leave the first adapter connected to the console.
How to read the connection status
Solid white on the adapter
A solid-white indicator on the PlayStation Link USB adapter is Sony’s stated sign that the connection has succeeded. Once that light is steady, the wireless link between the adapter and earbuds is established.

No connection after 30 seconds
The earbuds do not search indefinitely. Sony specifies a 30-second search period; after it expires without a connection, the earbuds turn off. This timeout is expected behavior rather than proof that the earbuds are defective.
Searching again
Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to start another search. You do not need to press both earbuds’ buttons. Keep the adapter inserted while retrying and allow time for its indicator to become solid white.
Why removing both earbuds matters
The documented sequence starts with both earbuds in the case and then removes both of them after the adapter is inserted. That sequence lets the pair search together for the already-paired PlayStation Link adapter. If only one earbud is removed, put it back, return both earbuds to the case, verify that the adapter is inserted, and repeat the complete sequence with both sides.

This is also why it is better not to begin by taking out one earbud while the PS5 is still starting. Prepare the console and adapter first, then remove both earbuds at the same time.

Troubleshooting a PULSE Explore connection
The adapter indicator does not become solid white
- Confirm that you inserted the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, not a different wireless dongle.
- Check that it is fully inserted into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Put both earbuds back in the charging case, leave the adapter connected, and remove both earbuds again.
- If the 30-second search has already ended, press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to search again.
If the indicator still does not show a solid white connection after repeating the documented sequence, Sony’s cited setup page does not provide a deeper diagnostic tree. At that point, use the PlayStation support instructions for the current hardware and avoid assuming that a generic Bluetooth adapter will solve the problem.
The earbuds turned off while you were trying to connect
That normally means the 30-second search window expired. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to initiate another search. If necessary, return both earbuds to the case and repeat the setup from the point where the adapter is inserted.

The PS5 shows no setup prompt
The on-screen prompt is part of Sony’s documented finishing step, but the physical connection begins with the adapter and earbuds. Verify that the adapter is in a USB Type-A port and that you removed both earbuds. Then repeat the search by pressing the PlayStation Link button on either earbud. The solid-white adapter indicator is the more direct connection signal described by Sony.
Only one earbud seems to connect
Return both earbuds to the case and restart the sequence with both docked. After the adapter is inserted, remove both sides together. The documented procedure treats the earbuds as a pair; removing only one does not follow that procedure.
You are trying to use a phone at the same time
Do not replace the PS5’s PlayStation Link connection with Bluetooth. Sony says supported PULSE Explore devices can maintain a PlayStation Link connection and a Bluetooth connection simultaneously. That makes a phone connection possible while PS5 audio remains on the PlayStation Link link; Sony gives receiving a phone call while hearing PS5 audio as an example. Compatibility depends on the specific mobile device and supported PULSE Explore configuration.

Using PULSE Explore with more than one device
There are two different ideas that are easy to confuse:
PlayStation Link plus Bluetooth at the same time
A supported PULSE Explore setup can use PlayStation Link for the PS5 and Bluetooth for a compatible mobile device concurrently. This is the appropriate arrangement when you want console audio and phone connectivity without disconnecting the PS5 adapter. Sony describes the capabilities of PlayStation Link devices on its US support page at playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/playstation-link/.
A second PlayStation Link connection
A separate PlayStation Link USB adapter can be useful when you want another PlayStation Link destination, such as a computer, while keeping an adapter connected to the PS5. This is an additional setup, not a requirement for the console. Sony’s support material identifies the separate-adapter scenario but does not establish a universal compatibility list for every computer, adapter revision or retailer listing, so check the exact product documentation before buying.

- Looking for a Bluetooth pairing menu first. The PS5 instructions use PlayStation Link and the USB adapter.
- Removing one earbud before the other. Start with both in the case and remove both after the adapter is connected.
- Buying an adapter for ordinary setup. The included adapter is already paired with the earbuds.
- Assuming a blinking or unlit indicator means permanent failure. First account for the 30-second timeout and retry with the PlayStation Link button.
- Using the wrong USB connector. Sony specifies a PS5 USB Type-A port for the included adapter.
- Expecting a generic Bluetooth dongle to behave like PlayStation Link. Sony does not document that substitution for this PS5 setup.
A quick repeatable checklist
- PS5 is powered on.
- Both PULSE Explore earbuds are in the charging case.
- The included PlayStation Link USB adapter is inserted in a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Both earbuds are removed from the case.
- Any on-screen setup instructions are completed.
- The adapter indicator is solid white.
- If the search times out, the PlayStation Link button on either earbud is pressed to try again.
This checklist follows Sony’s stated order and separates the normal setup from optional Bluetooth or second-adapter arrangements. For the authoritative procedure and any later hardware-specific changes, consult Sony’s current US support instructions.
