What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Give your local AI agent one explicit search tool, then make its responses predictable: return the query, result title, URL, useful text, and source metadata in a consistent format. You can run the search service yourself with SearXNG or call a managed search API such as Brave Search while keeping the model’s inference local. Neither setup guarantees correct results; reliability depends on the whole integration, including availability, error handling, and sources the agent can cite.
What “reliable web search” means for a local agent
A local model does not need a local search index. The agent can send a query to a self-hosted metasearch service or a remote API, then pass retrieved material to the model. Inference can remain local even when retrieval uses an external service.

Think of search as a tool with a clear input and output, not as an instruction buried in the model prompt. A useful normalized result should contain:

- Title and URL: enough to identify and link to each source.
- Useful text: a snippet or extracted page content the model can assess.
- Source metadata: such as ranking or freshness information when the provider supplies it.
That structure lets the agent distinguish evidence from its own generated text and show where claims came from. It also makes it easier to handle different search backends without changing the model-facing tool contract.

Choose a search backend
The main choice is operational control versus a provider-maintained search service with content extraction. The documentation describes how these options work, but does not establish that either is universally more reliable.
| Consideration | Self-hosted SearXNG | Managed Brave Search API |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | You run and configure the metasearch service. | Your agent calls Brave’s service using an API key. |
| Returned material | HTTP API supports GET and POST, with JSON, CSV, or RSS output depending on instance configuration. | LLM Context returns extracted web-content chunks and source metadata, with controls for context limits and relevance or source ranking. |
| Cost information | The reviewed project documentation does not establish infrastructure or operating costs; these depend on your deployment. | Brave listed Search at $5 per 1,000 requests with $5 in monthly credits on the pricing page checked 2026-10-07. Confirm the applicable API plan and current price. |
| Key integration check | Enable the output format you intend to consume. Public instances may disable JSON. | Protect the API token and validate endpoint parameters and response schema. |
| What the documentation does not establish | It does not guarantee upstream search engines will respond consistently or make a self-hosted deployment inherently reliable. | Vendor claims about scale, freshness, or quality are not independent comparative reliability results. |
Option 1: Connect SearXNG
SearXNG is a self-hostable metasearch engine with a documented HTTP API. Its project documentation describes the service as “Search without being tracked”; treat that as the project’s positioning, not as an independently verified privacy guarantee. The API accepts GET or POST requests at / and /search. The SearXNG documentation build shown as current is 2026.10.7.

- Run an instance you control. Configure and maintain it for your environment rather than assuming a public instance is suitable for production.
- Enable JSON output. SearXNG can return JSON, CSV, or RSS, but JSON must be enabled in the instance configuration. Some public instances disable it.
- Call the HTTP endpoint from your agent’s tool layer. Send the search query using GET or POST and parse the configured response format.
- Normalize results. Map each response into the same query, title, URL, useful-text, and metadata fields used by the agent, handling missing fields explicitly.
The API makes integration possible; it does not establish that any particular deployment, upstream engine, or public instance will be consistently available.

Option 2: Connect Brave LLM Context
Brave documents its LLM Context endpoint specifically for agent and model use, describing it as “Web search for AI agents and chatbots.” It returns extracted content chunks with source metadata and offers controls for context budget, URL limits, relevance, and source ranking. The API documentation also describes freshness filters and optional source-metadata enrichment.

- Use the LLM Context endpoint for an agent consumer. Check the current Brave API documentation for endpoint parameters and the response schema before wiring it into your tool.
- Authenticate on the server side. Brave requires the key in the
X-Subscription-Tokenheader. Keep it in server-side configuration or a secret store—not in browser code, a public repository, or the prompt. - Set retrieval limits deliberately. Choose context and URL limits that fit the agent’s available input budget, and use relevance or freshness controls where the question calls for them.
- Normalize the response. Preserve the source URLs and useful extracted text, and expose metadata to the model or user when it helps explain the answer.
Brave’s page checked 2026-10-07 reported 40+ billion indexed pages and 100+ million page updates every day. Those are vendor-reported scale figures, not independent measures of relevance, geographic coverage, uptime, or success on a particular query.

- Use a stable schema. Keep the model-facing fields consistent across providers. If a response omits a title, URL, or text field, represent that explicitly rather than silently substituting generated content.
- Set timeouts and bounded retries. A search request that hangs indefinitely blocks the agent. Retry transient failures only within a defined limit, and avoid turning a provider error into an empty result that looks like a successful search.
- Return clear tool errors. Distinguish no results from a timeout, authentication failure, rate limit, or malformed response so the agent can explain the problem or try an appropriate recovery.
- Preserve source identity. Pass URLs and available metadata along with extracted text so the answer can attribute claims and readers can inspect the underlying pages.
- Check freshness when it matters. For time-sensitive questions, use documented freshness controls where available and present dates or source context rather than treating retrieval as proof that information is current.
- Review actual responses. Confirm the endpoint’s real output format, URLs, metadata, and failure behavior in your deployment; do not rely only on an assumed schema.
Which setup should you use?
- Choose SearXNG if operating the search service yourself and configuring its behavior are priorities, and you can maintain the instance and its upstream dependencies.
- Choose Brave LLM Context if you want a managed API designed to return extracted content and source metadata to an agent, and are comfortable with a remote provider and API billing.
- In either case, keep the same model-facing tool schema, protect credentials, and make failures and sources visible.
The Brave Search API pricing page checked 2026-10-07 listed Search at $5 per 1,000 requests and included $5 in monthly credits; pricing and plan details can change. The reviewed SearXNG documentation does not establish the cost of running an instance, which depends on the chosen infrastructure and operation.
