To connect PULSE Explore earbuds to a PS5, use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter—not the console’s Bluetooth settings. Turn on the PS5, place both earbuds in their charging case, insert the adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, then remove the earbuds. They are paired with the included adapter from the factory and should connect automatically. A solid white light on the adapter confirms the connection.
If the earbuds do not connect, let them search for up to 30 seconds, then press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to start another search. A replacement or second adapter follows a different pairing procedure, explained below.

What you need before starting
- A PS5 that is powered on.
- Both PULSE Explore earbuds and their charging case.
- The PlayStation Link USB adapter supplied with the earbuds.
- An available USB Type-A port on the PS5.
The normal setup does not require you to buy another adapter or manually pair the earbuds. PlayStation’s official setup guidance states: “The included USB adapter is paired to your earbuds out of the box.” Keep that distinction in mind if you are troubleshooting: the included adapter and a newly purchased standalone adapter are not treated the same way.

- Turn on the PS5. Wait until the console has started and you can see its normal home screen or setup prompt.
- Dock both earbuds in the charging case. Leave them seated in the case while you prepare the USB connection.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port. Use the adapter that came in the PULSE Explore package for the ordinary first-time setup.
- Remove both earbuds from the case. Once they are removed, they search for the PlayStation Link connection provided by the adapter.
- Follow any on-screen instructions. The PS5 may display a setup or device notification while the earbuds connect.
- Check the adapter light. A solid white status indicator on the PlayStation Link USB adapter indicates that it is connected.
When these steps work, the adapter handles the PS5 connection over PlayStation Link. You do not need to open the PS5’s Bluetooth menu to complete this setup.

How to tell whether the connection worked
Check the adapter indicator
The clearest confirmation is the PlayStation Link USB adapter’s status light. Solid white means the adapter is connected. If the light has not reached that state, give the earbuds their connection-search period before starting recovery steps.
Watch for a PS5 prompt
If another nearby set of earbuds has already been paired with the PS5, the console may show a “PS Link Device Nearby” notification. Select the on-screen option only when the displayed device is the set you intend to use. This prompt is useful when more than one compatible device is within range, but it does not change the normal included-adapter procedure.
Test the expected audio path
After the adapter indicates a connection, listen for PS5 audio through the earbuds. If the console still shows a setup prompt, complete that prompt rather than repeatedly removing and reinserting the adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the earbuds do not connect
Give the first search time to complete
PULSE Explore earbuds search for a connection for 30 seconds. If they do not find one during that period, they turn off. This is a connection timeout, not evidence that the earbuds or PS5 are permanently faulty.
Start another search
Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to begin another connection search. Once the earbuds start searching again, keep the adapter inserted and wait for the PS5 connection to complete.

Recheck the basic setup order
- Confirm that the PS5 is on.
- Confirm that the USB device in the console is the supplied PlayStation Link adapter.
- Confirm that the adapter is in a USB Type-A port, not merely resting beside the console.
- Confirm that both earbuds were docked before the adapter was inserted and removed afterward.
- Look for a PS5 message asking you to complete setup or select a nearby PS Link device.
The order matters because the included adapter is already associated with the earbuds. Starting with both earbuds in the case lets you establish the adapter connection before the earbuds begin searching.
Install offered updates
PlayStation says updates for the earbuds and adapter are added when the PS5 system software is updated. If the console presents an update instruction for the earbuds or adapter, follow the on-screen instructions. Do not assume that a particular firmware number is current; the available version depends on what PlayStation is offering through the console at the time.
Included adapter versus a replacement or second adapter
Most owners should use the adapter bundled with the earbuds. A different procedure applies only when the original adapter is missing, damaged, or when you are setting up a new standalone adapter for an additional PlayStation Link connection.
| Situation | Adapter status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Normal PS5 setup | Included with PULSE Explore and pre-paired | Insert it while both earbuds are in the case, then remove the earbuds |
| Replacement or additional standalone adapter | Not paired to the earbuds out of the box | Pair it manually using the case’s PS Link button and the adapter button |
Buying another adapter is therefore not part of standard setup. Consider a replacement or extra unit only when the supplied adapter is unavailable or you specifically need another PlayStation Link connection.
Pair a new standalone PlayStation Link USB adapter
These instructions apply to a new adapter, not the adapter that was supplied and already paired with your earbuds. The pairing steps come from PlayStation’s support guidance for connecting PULSE Explore earbuds to other devices.

- Put both earbuds in the charging case. Keep them docked for the pairing operation.
- Press and hold the PS Link button on the case. Continue holding it until the case indicator quickly blinks blue. PlayStation’s instructions describe this as taking about eight seconds.
- Press the button on the new USB adapter. This starts the adapter’s pairing process.
- Wait for the adapter and earbuds to connect. Keep the case and adapter close enough for the pairing process to complete, and follow any PS5 instructions if the adapter is connected to the console.
A standalone adapter is not pre-paired, so simply removing the earbuds from the case will not reproduce the instant setup of the bundled unit. If you are using the included adapter, do not perform this manual pairing sequence unless PlayStation specifically directs you to reset or pair it.
Why the PS5 uses PlayStation Link instead of Bluetooth
The PS5 setup uses PlayStation Link through the USB adapter. Bluetooth is not the connection method for the ordinary console setup described above.
PULSE Explore supports a simultaneous PlayStation Link connection to a supported device such as a PS5 and a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone. That capability can let you handle phone audio or calls while using the PlayStation Link connection for the console. It does not mean that you should try to connect the earbuds to the PS5 through the console’s Bluetooth settings, and it does not eliminate the need for the PlayStation Link USB adapter for this PS5 connection.

The adapter light never becomes solid white
- Check that the adapter is fully inserted into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Verify that both earbuds were docked before insertion and removed afterward.
- Allow the 30-second search period to finish.
- Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to begin another search.
- Respond to any “PS Link Device Nearby” notification if it identifies the earbuds you want to use.
- Install any PS5-provided update for the earbuds or adapter.
The earbuds turned off while you were waiting
That behavior matches the documented timeout: after 30 seconds without a connection, the earbuds turn off. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to search again, while leaving the adapter connected to the PS5.
The PS5 shows a nearby-device notification for the wrong earbuds
Do not accept the notification unless it refers to your PULSE Explore set. The alert can appear when another previously paired earbud set is nearby. Follow the prompt only when the intended earbuds are identified.

You are using a replacement adapter
Do not expect automatic pairing from a standalone adapter. Put both earbuds in the case, hold the case’s PS Link button until its indicator quickly blinks blue—about eight seconds in PlayStation’s instructions—and then press the button on the adapter.
What to buy if the original adapter is missing
Search for a “PlayStation Link USB adapter” when you need a replacement or additional unit. That purchase is conditional: owners who still have the adapter bundled with PULSE Explore generally do not need another one. A new adapter must be paired manually because it is not paired to the earbuds out of the box.
Quick setup checklist
- PS5 powered on.
- Both earbuds docked in the case before connecting the adapter.
- Included PlayStation Link USB adapter inserted into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Both earbuds removed from the case after the adapter is inserted.
- On-screen setup or device notification completed when shown.
- Adapter indicator checked for solid white.
- Earbud PlayStation Link button used to restart searching if the 30-second timeout occurs.
- Manual case-and-adapter pairing used only for a new standalone adapter.
Frequently overlooked details
You normally do not begin by pairing manually
The bundled adapter and earbuds are already paired. Manual pairing is for a replacement or second adapter, not the normal first connection to the PS5.
The earbuds should be in the case while the adapter is inserted
Dock both earbuds first, connect the adapter, and remove the earbuds afterward. That is the sequence specified for the standard setup.

The 30-second figure describes searching, not charging
The 30-second period is how long the earbuds search for a connection before turning off. It is not a charge time, update duration, or estimate for the entire PS5 setup.
Updates are delivered through PS5 system software
When PlayStation offers an earbud or adapter update alongside a PS5 system software update, use the instructions displayed by the console. A fixed firmware number should not be treated as universally current.
