On most Windows laptops and MacBooks, the HDMI port is output-only. That means it sends the laptop’s display out to a monitor/TV, not the other way around. If your laptop has an HDMI input (sometimes labeled HDMI In), then PS5 → laptop can work with a single HDMI cable.

If your laptop is input-only capable? You can usually tell from the port label and specs. For example, many external capture devices use USB and no HDMI input is required on the laptop.
What You Need Before You Start
- PS5 console (PS5 or PS5 Slim)
- HDMI cable (a High Speed HDMI cable is fine; HDMI 2.0/2.1 supports up to 4K60 depending on the device)
- Laptop (Windows or macOS)
- Optional but common: an HDMI capture card that has HDMI input and USB connection to your laptop
If you’re choosing the capture-card route, look for these practical requirements:
- Resolution support: 1080p60 minimum; 4K60 support if you have a 4K setup
- Low latency mode (varies by brand, often shown as “Game” or “Instant Preview”)
- Windows support via software like OBS Studio or the vendor’s app
- macOS support if you use a Mac (some capture cards are more reliable on Windows)
Method 1 (Fast): Direct HDMI to Laptop Only If It Has HDMI Input
Use this only if your laptop physically accepts HDMI input. Many gaming laptops and all-in-one PCs still won’t.
Check for HDMI Input
Look for labels near the port. Common hints:
- Port says HDMI In, Video In, or has a dedicated input icon
- Your laptop includes a capture/video app and supports external video input
- Vendor specifications explicitly mention HDMI input
Connect and Select the Right Source
- Power off the laptop and PS5.
- Plug one HDMI end into the PS5 HDMI output.
- Plug the other HDMI end into the laptop’s HDMI In port.
- Power on the PS5.
- Power on the laptop.
- Open your laptop’s video input app or use a source selector (often labeled Input / Source).
- Choose HDMI as the input source.
If the laptop doesn’t have a source selector and you don’t see any video after a few seconds, you likely have output-only HDMI. Switch to Method 2.
Method 2 (Works for Most People): PS5 → HDMI Capture Card → Laptop
This is the method that reliably works because the capture card handles the HDMI input conversion to your laptop via USB.

Wiring Overview
PS5 HDMI output goes to the capture card HDMI input. The capture card connects to your laptop using USB. Your laptop then displays the captured video in a viewer app.
Step-by-Step Setup (Generic Capture Card)
- Plug the HDMI cable into the PS5 HDMI out port.
- Connect the other HDMI end to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the capture card to your laptop using its USB cable.
- Power on the PS5.

- Open the capture app or QuickTime Player.
- In QuickTime Player, choose File → New Movie Recording.
- Select the capture card as the video input (microphone selection depends on the model).
- Start recording or just confirm that live video shows.
If you only get a black preview, revisit PS5 video settings (resolution/HDCP) and try a different HDMI cable or USB port.
Audio Options (Headphones, Speakers, and Lag Notes)
Audio can come from the laptop speakers, USB audio from the capture card, or your headphones plugged into the capture card (if it supports it). Because capture cards handle audio differently, pick the cleanest path.
Best-practice audio choices
- Capture card audio output to laptop: simplest, but audio/video sync can vary.
- Headphones into laptop: works if the laptop’s system audio matches the captured stream (may cause sync issues).
- Headphones into controller: if you use the PS5 controller audio path while video streams to the laptop. This avoids capture-card audio lag.
If you’re sensitive to delay in competitive games, controller audio is often the most stable choice.
PS5 Video Settings That Prevent Black Screen or Blurry Output
When a capture card or laptop preview looks wrong, PS5 settings are the first place to fix it. HDMI handshake issues are common when the laptop/capture chain doesn’t fully support the PS5’s default modes.
Change PS5 resolution and HDCP-friendly behavior
- On PS5, go to Settings.
- Open Screen and Video.
- Select Video Output.
- Set Resolution to a safe option like 1080p.
- Set HDR to Off if the image looks washed out or the preview fails.
- Set Deep Color Output to Off if your preview flickers.
- Save changes and test again in your capture viewer.
Try stepping back up later (for example, 1440p or 4K) once you know the chain is stable.

Troubleshooting Checklist (When Video Shows But Audio Fails)
- Check capture software audio device: In OBS, make sure the capture card audio device is selected under audio sources.
- Check Windows sound output: Settings → System → Sound → Output, pick the capture card if it appears.
- Unplug/replug USB: Switch USB ports (prefer a USB 3.0/3.1 port on Windows) to reset the audio driver.
- Disable HDR/HDCP-sensitive modes: If audio cuts out after changing display settings, set HDR Off and keep resolution at 1080p.
- Controller audio workaround: Plug headphones into the PS5 controller (3.5mm on DualSense) to bypass capture-card audio issues.
Troubleshooting Checklist (When the Screen Is Black or Stuck)
A black preview usually points to HDMI handshake, incompatible HDCP behavior, or a device that can’t pass/receive the PS5’s format.
- Try a different HDMI cable: Cheap cables can fail at 4K/60.
- Set PS5 resolution to 1080p: In Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → Resolution.
- Disable HDCP if the capture card supports toggles: Some capture software includes HDCP-related options. If you don’t see it, don’t guess—follow the vendor instructions.
- Power cycle order: Unplug PS5 HDMI, reboot the capture software, then reconnect HDMI and power on PS5 last.
- Use USB power properly: Some capture cards need an additional USB power cable; if included, use it.
- Avoid USB hubs: Connect capture card directly to the laptop. Hubs can cause dropped frames and black screens.
- Test with a different input app: If the vendor app fails, try OBS Studio or QuickTime Player (macOS) to isolate software issues.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming HDMI is bidirectional: Laptop HDMI is usually output-only. Use capture hardware if you’re not sure.
- Using the wrong port on the capture card: Make sure PS5 is connected to HDMI IN, not HDMI OUT.
- Expecting instant 4K60: Start at 1080p first to confirm stability, then scale up.
- Forgetting refresh/frame rate: If your capture card can do 60 fps but you force 30 fps, motion will feel off. Keep it consistent.
- Ignoring lag: Preview delay is normal with many capture cards. For competitive play, consider controller audio and a direct TV/monitor pass-through.
Alternatives to HDMI Capture
If you don’t want extra hardware, your options narrow, because HDMI input is still the main limitation.
Remote Play (PS5 to laptop over Wi‑Fi)
PlayStation Remote Play can stream your PS5 screen to a laptop over the network. It avoids HDMI input entirely, but it depends on bandwidth and latency, and quality varies by router setup.
If your priority is “no extra device,” Remote Play can be faster to set up, especially if your network is strong.
HDMI switch + external monitor pass-through
If you only need a larger display sometimes, a TV/monitor with HDMI pass-through is often simpler. Capture cards add flexibility for streaming/recording, but they’re not always the lowest-latency choice.

Bottom Line
To connect a PS5 to a laptop with HDMI, you either need a laptop with true HDMI input (rare), or you need a capture card (common and reliable). In real setups, most people should use the capture card method and set the PS5 to 1080p first for stability.
Once the preview works, fine-tune audio and resolution based on what your capture chain supports.
FAQs
Can I connect my PS5 to a laptop with HDMI without a capture card?
Only if your laptop explicitly supports HDMI input (often labeled HDMI In). Most laptops are output-only, so you’ll see no video.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need OBS to make this work?
No. You can use the capture card’s vendor app if it supports live preview. OBS Studio is a common fallback because it lets you confirm both video and audio device selection.
Will I get controller audio and laptop audio at the same time?
Yes, but it can create echo and delay. For clean results, use controller audio for gameplay and mute one output.
My PS5 video is black on the laptop. What’s the first fix?
Set PS5 resolution to 1080p and disable HDR. Then power-cycle in the right order: start capture app first, connect HDMI, then power on PS5.
Why does the preview lag?
Capture cards introduce processing and USB transfer delay. If you need near-zero lag, use HDMI pass-through to a TV/monitor for gameplay while using the laptop for preview only.
