How to Connect Owncast to YouTube with an RTMP Stream Key

Owncast and YouTube are separate streaming destinations, so each needs its own server URL and stream key. To send a broadcast to both, configure a multi-output encoder or relay; simply entering YouTube credentials in an encoder already set to Owncast will not connect the two.

Understand the two RTMP connections

Owncast receives a broadcast from your encoder. Its default RTMP ingest uses TCP port 1935 and the /live path. YouTube receives a separate broadcast using the server URL and stream key for a YouTube Live stream, found in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the endpoints and keys distinct.

For Owncast, the full URL form is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. Most encoder interfaces instead take the base server URL, rtmp://<owncast-host>:1935/live, in one field and the key in another. Use the key configured in Owncast, not the YouTube key.

Connect an encoder to Owncast

  1. Find your Owncast server address and key. In Owncast’s admin interface, go to Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys. Copy the key you intend to use and keep it private. Owncast can manage multiple stream keys.
  2. Set the encoder destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose a custom service, and enter rtmp://<owncast-host>:1935/live as the server. Enter the matching Owncast key in the stream key field. Menu labels can vary by OBS version.
  3. Start the broadcast and check Owncast. Start streaming in the encoder, then confirm the incoming stream appears on your Owncast channel. If it does not connect, check the hostname, key, port access, and server/network capacity.

Owncast says RTMP-compatible broadcasting software is generally compatible, while noting it has not tested every encoder. Match resolution and bitrate to the capacity of the Owncast server and your available upload bandwidth; higher settings can increase resource use and conversion work.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Connect an encoder to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live and create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy that YouTube stream’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. In the encoder, use those values for the YouTube destination’s server and key fields. Do not substitute the Owncast endpoint or key.
  3. Start the encoder. For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live if the stream is not set to start automatically.

YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, since YouTube warns that the default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP. Owncast’s cited connection instructions document RTMP ingest, so do not assume a YouTube RTMPS URL can replace Owncast’s endpoint. Configure and verify the protocol for each destination separately.

Send the same program to both services

An encoder output configured for Owncast does not also send to YouTube. To broadcast the same program on both, choose software that supports simultaneous outputs or use a relay service, and verify its current protocol support and instructions before configuring it. Consider these factors:

  • 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
  • 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
  • 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
  • Output support: Can the encoder send to multiple destinations at the same time?
  • Connection path: Does the broadcast go directly from your computer to each service, or through a third-party relay?
  • Protocol: Does the path support the required ingest protocol, including YouTube RTMPS if you choose it?
  • Capacity: Can your upload connection and Owncast server handle the combined output and selected quality?
  • Cost and reachability: Does the method require a paid service, and can it reach Owncast’s RTMP port?

Owncast documents a paid Restream account as one custom-RTMP route to Owncast; its instructions also require Owncast port 1935 to be publicly reachable. That is a documented option, not a requirement for every dual-output setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect keys and open the necessary port

  • Owncast’s first-stream documentation identifies abc123 as the initial default stream key and admin password, and recommends changing both immediately. They are separate credentials; do not publish or reuse the default key.
  • If Owncast is behind a firewall or cloud security group, allow inbound TCP access to port 1935 for RTMP ingest. Owncast installation documentation lists port 8080 for its web interface; that is not the RTMP ingest port.
  • Treat both Owncast and YouTube keys as credentials. Do not include them in screenshots, public posts, or shared encoder profiles. If a key is exposed, replace it in the corresponding service and update the encoder.

Troubleshoot a failed connection

What you see Likely cause What to check
Owncast does not receive the encoder stream Wrong endpoint or key, or blocked ingest port Confirm the Owncast host, port 1935, /live path, matching Owncast key, and inbound TCP firewall/security-group rule.
YouTube does not receive the stream Owncast credentials were entered for YouTube, or YouTube stream details do not match Copy the server URL and key for the selected stream from Live Control Room and use them in the YouTube destination.
A scheduled YouTube stream has a preview but is not live The operator has not started the scheduled event in Live Control Room After the preview appears, click Go live if required.
One destination works but the other does not Only one destination is configured, or the multi-output path has a separate protocol or capacity issue Check each destination’s URL, key, protocol support, and the encoder or relay’s current multi-output setup.
Owncast accepts a connection but quality is unstable Selected output settings exceed server or network capacity Reduce resolution or bitrate and check the server and upload connection before increasing output quality again.
RTMPS fails when pointed at Owncast YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint was used in place of Owncast’s documented RTMP ingest endpoint Use the protocol and endpoint supported by each destination; Owncast’s cited connection guide documents RTMP ingest.
