For a local browser-and-terminal setup, run opencode web --port 4096, then attach a second terminal with opencode attach http://localhost:4096. For the documented Windows Desktop plus WSL arrangement, start opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096 inside WSL and connect Desktop to http://localhost:4096 (or the WSL IP if localhost is not reachable). Set a server password before allowing network access.
The connection model: one server, several clients
OpenCode treats the server as the shared backend. Running the regular opencode command starts a terminal user interface (TUI) and a server; the TUI is a client of that server. You can instead start only the backend with opencode serve, then connect a TUI, Desktop app, browser interface, or another supported frontend to the same address. The client does not need its own separate project server when it can reach the existing one.

Every client needs two pieces of information:
- Host name or IP address: the machine where the server is listening, such as
localhoston the same computer or a WSL IP on a Windows host. - Port: the TCP port selected by the server, commonly
4096in the documented examples.
Combine them as an HTTP URL, for example http://localhost:4096. Do not use 0.0.0.0 as the URL in a client. That value tells the server to listen on all available interfaces; clients must use a reachable host name or IP address instead. The official OpenCode server documentation describes the backend command and defaults.

| Use case | Start the server with | Client address | Network and security considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser and terminal on one computer | opencode web --port 4096 |
http://localhost:4096 for the attach command |
Web normally binds to 127.0.0.1; this is local-only unless you deliberately change the binding. |
| Windows Desktop connected to WSL | opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096 inside WSL |
http://localhost:4096, or http://<wsl-ip>:4096 if required |
The all-interface binding is broader than loopback. Set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD. |
| Standalone backend for a TUI or another frontend | opencode serve (optionally with --hostname, --port, and repeated --cors) |
The host and port you selected | Use authentication for any non-local access and allow only required browser origins. |
| Local-network discovery for Web | opencode web --mdns |
The advertised opencode.local name, or a custom mDNS domain |
mDNS automatically uses 0.0.0.0; protect the service with a password. |
The documented server defaults are port 4096, hostname 127.0.0.1, mDNS disabled, and no additional CORS origins. The Web command may choose a different available port when you do not supply one, so always use the address OpenCode prints.

Connect the Web interface and terminal on one machine
This is the shortest route when both clients run on the same computer. Web starts a browser-facing server, and the terminal TUI can attach to that same endpoint.
- Start Web. Open a terminal and run:
opencode web --port 4096OpenCode starts the service and opens a browser. If you omit
--port 4096, Web selects an available port and reports it; record that exact port. - Confirm the local URL. With the command above, the expected local address is
http://localhost:4096. The default Web binding is127.0.0.1, so another computer cannot normally reach it. - Attach the TUI in a second terminal.
opencode attach http://localhost:4096If Web selected another port, replace
4096with the printed value. - Use both interfaces. The official Web guide says the web and terminal interfaces can be used simultaneously while sharing the same sessions and state. A session created through one client is therefore available through the other when both point to this server.
This arrangement keeps the backend on one process and avoids accidentally creating two unrelated servers. Closing the attached TUI does not change the server address; closing the process that owns the server does.
Run a standalone server and attach a terminal
Use opencode serve when you want the backend to run independently of a local TUI. The command accepts a port, hostname, and one or more browser origins for CORS:
opencode serve --hostname 127.0.0.1 --port 4096
On the same machine, attach the terminal with:
opencode attach http://localhost:4096
If you choose a LAN address or a different port, substitute the hostname and port that the server is actually listening on. The CLI documentation also provides username and password options for attach; when you do not pass credentials there, the server authentication environment variables described below supply the defaults.
A standalone server is useful when Desktop or a separate browser frontend must remain connected while terminal windows open and close independently. Keep the server process running for as long as those clients need it.

Connect the Windows Desktop app to a server in WSL
The following is the documented Windows/WSL workflow. It does not assume a particular Desktop version’s button names; the important operation is entering the server URL in Desktop’s connection control.
- Open WSL and start the backend.
opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096The
0.0.0.0binding allows the Windows host to reach the service across the WSL boundary. - Set authentication before exposing the listener. In the same WSL environment, set
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORDto a strong value before starting the server. Without a password, the documentation warns that the Web server is unsecured. - Enter the local Windows address in Desktop. Try
http://localhost:4096in the Desktop app’s server connection field. - Use the WSL address if localhost fails. In WSL, run:
hostname -ITake the appropriate WSL IP address and enter
http://<wsl-ip>:4096in Desktop. - Authenticate when prompted. The default HTTP Basic Authentication username is
opencodeunless you setOPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAMEto another value. Use the password configured inOPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD.
The same Windows/WSL guide recommends running opencode web from WSL when you want the browser interface on Windows. Open the URL and port printed by OpenCode in the Windows browser; do not assume the port is always 4096 if Web chose one automatically. See the official Windows (WSL) instructions for the platform-specific procedure.

| Value | What it means | What to enter in a client |
|---|---|---|
127.0.0.1 |
Loopback only; the server accepts connections from the same machine. | http://localhost:<port> or http://127.0.0.1:<port> on that machine. |
0.0.0.0 |
Listen on available network interfaces. It is a bind address, not a destination address. | A real host name or IP reachable from the client, followed by the port. |
localhost |
A client-side name that normally resolves to the local computer. In a WSL/Desktop arrangement, resolution can depend on the particular Windows and WSL setup. | Try http://localhost:4096; use the WSL IP when it does not reach the service. |
4096 |
The documented server default and the port used in the examples. | Use the actual selected port if another process or command configuration requires a different one. |
Changing the hostname controls where the server listens; it does not change the URL syntax. Changing the port requires every client URL to use that new port. A browser tab that still points at an old port cannot reach a server restarted on a new one.
Protect a server that other machines can reach
Loopback-only use is the narrowest exposure. The moment you bind to a LAN interface, use WSL’s all-interface binding, or publish a service through another network path, enable HTTP Basic Authentication. Set the password in the environment before launching the server:
export OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD='use-a-long-unique-password'opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096
On shells that use a different environment-variable syntax, set the same variable using that shell’s normal method. The default username is opencode. Override it with OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME if your deployment requires a different name. The server and Web documentation both describe these variables and warn that omitting a password leaves the Web server unsecured; see Server authentication and Web authentication.

When to configure CORS
CORS matters when a separate browser frontend, served from another origin, makes requests to the OpenCode server. It is not required for the ordinary terminal attach command and is not a substitute for authentication.
Supply each permitted origin with a repeatable --cors option when starting the server:
opencode serve --port 4096 --cors http://localhost:3000 --cors https://frontend.example
Replace those example origins with the exact origins used by your frontend. An origin includes the scheme, host, and (when applicable) port. Add only origins you control and need. The server command reference documents repeatable --cors <origin> arguments; the Web guide explains browser access and network binding.
Use mDNS for local-network discovery
If typing an IP address on a trusted local network is inconvenient, Web can advertise the service with mDNS:
opencode web --mdns
The documented advertisement name is opencode.local. You can customize it with --mdns-domain. Enabling mDNS automatically uses 0.0.0.0, so apply the same password and network-exposure precautions as for any non-loopback binding. Discovery makes the address easier to find; it does not add authentication.

Keep command-line and configuration settings predictable
OpenCode supports server settings in opencode.json. The documentation states that command-line values take precedence over configuration-file values. This lets you keep a normal default in the file and override it for a particular launch, such as selecting a temporary port or enabling mDNS for a local session.
- Check the effective command line when diagnosing a connection: a flag can override what you believe is in
opencode.json. - Record the hostname, port, CORS origins, and authentication environment used for the running process.
- After changing a setting, restart the server; already-running clients continue using their existing URL and connection.
Verify that the backend is alive
The server exposes an OpenAPI 3.1 specification at:
http://<hostname>:<port>/doc
It also provides the global health endpoint GET /global/health. For a local server on port 4096, a health request can be made to:
http://localhost:4096/global/health
Use these endpoints to distinguish a running backend from a client-side URL or authentication problem. The exact response format and available operations are described by the generated specification at /doc; do not infer that a successful network connection means every client has accepted the same credentials.
Recommended Free Tools
Troubleshoot the connection by symptom
“Connection refused” or the page does not load
- Confirm that the server process is still running and did not exit because the port was unavailable.
- Check the port printed by
opencode web; Web chooses an available port when you do not specify one. - Make sure the client URL uses the same port and the correct scheme,
http://. - If the server is in WSL, retry with the address from
hostname -Iinstead oflocalhost.
The server works locally but not from another device
- A server bound to
127.0.0.1is intentionally local-only. Start it with an appropriate reachable hostname or0.0.0.0when that broader binding is acceptable. - Use the host machine’s reachable IP or name in the client URL; never enter
0.0.0.0. - Enable
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORDbefore exposing the service and account for any network controls outside OpenCode.
Desktop cannot connect to the WSL server at localhost
Verify that WSL is running opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096. Then run hostname -I inside WSL and try http://<wsl-ip>:4096 in Desktop. This fallback is part of the documented Windows/WSL procedure.
Best Value
The browser reports a CORS error
This usually means the separate frontend’s origin was not allowed. Add that exact origin with --cors (repeat the option for multiple origins), restart the server, and reload the frontend. Do not solve a CORS error by allowing every origin when a narrower list is possible.
The client asks for credentials or rejects them
Check whether OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD is set in the environment of the server process. Use username opencode unless OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME overrides it. The terminal’s attach command has username and password options documented in the CLI reference; ensure those values match the server.
The terminal and Web show different sessions
Confirm both clients use the same scheme, host, and port. Two independently started servers can look identical while maintaining separate state. Attach the TUI to the exact URL printed for the Web server, rather than starting another opencode process and assuming it shares the first process.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A repeatable launch checklist
- Decide where the single backend will run: local machine, WSL, or another reachable host.
- Choose a port, using
4096only when it is available and appropriate. - Choose a binding: keep
127.0.0.1for same-machine use; use a reachable interface only when another client needs access. - Set
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORDbefore any non-loopback launch, and setOPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAMEonly if the default username is unsuitable. - Start Web or the standalone server and record the exact URL it reports.
- Attach the terminal with
opencode attach <server-url>. - Enter that same URL in Desktop or the browser frontend. For WSL, try localhost first and the WSL IP second.
- Add
--corsonly for the origins a separate browser frontend actually uses. - Check
/global/healthand/docwhen a client fails, then correct the host, port, binding, or credentials indicated by the symptom.
With this arrangement, the server remains the single source of session state while the terminal, Desktop, and Web clients act as different ways to work with it.
