To play local multiplayer, do two separate jobs: pair every controller with the console, then use the game’s multiplayer screen to assign each controller to a player. A controller can be connected to the console yet still be absent from the match until the game registers it.
Start in the console’s controller settings (or use the documented first-time USB pairing method), connect each pad one at a time, confirm its player indicator, and then choose the game’s local mode and controller layout. The game’s supported player count, mode, controller type and accessories—not just the console’s pairing capacity—determine how many people can actually play.

The reliable setup sequence
- Charge or connect every controller. A low battery, unsuitable cable or unsupported third-party pad can look like a pairing failure.
- Open the console’s controller-pairing screen. Do not begin in the game unless the game specifically directs you there.
- Pair one controller at a time. Wait for the console’s connected indicator before starting the next one.
- Choose the physical layout. Some systems can treat two halves of one controller as either a single pad or two independent pads.
- Launch the game’s local multiplayer mode. Follow its prompt to select the number of players and register a controller for each player.
- Check the game’s limit and mode. A console may accept more controllers than a particular game, map, race or tournament mode supports.
If a player cannot join, return to the game’s controller-selection screen first. Pairing at the system level and joining the active game are separate steps.

Choose the setup before pairing everything
Decide how many people will play and what each person will hold before pressing pairing buttons. On Switch, one left-and-right Joy-Con pair can be one controller, while a single Joy-Con held horizontally can be a separate controller for one player. A Switch Pro Controller is another single-controller option when the game supports it. This choice affects how many physical devices you need and how the game’s player screen should be configured.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
For a PS5, plan on one controller per player unless the game documents another arrangement. A first-time DualSense connection uses a USB cable, so have a suitable data-capable cable ready for each controller that has not been paired with that console. A cable that only supplies power may charge the controller without completing pairing.
Check the title’s local-player count and controller-type support before buying hardware. An extra controller is useful only if the selected game and mode accept it. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a reasonable additional option for compatible Switch games; a Joy-Con charging grip is a separately sold accessory for charging or USB pairing, not an extra player slot. Third-party pads and generic compatibility adapters require model-specific compatibility checks.
What the console can support versus what the game allows
There are three different limits to keep in mind:
- Connected-controller limit: how many wireless controllers the console can maintain at once under specific conditions.
- Controller-layout limit: whether a device is treated as one pad, two split pads, or a particular controller type.
- Game limit: how many local players the title and selected mode accept.
The smallest of those limits is the practical player count. For example, Nintendo states that a Switch can connect up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances, but a game may support fewer local players. A Bluetooth-audio connection can reduce the Switch to no more than two wireless controllers, even before the game’s own limit is considered.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the controller paired with the console? | The system recognizes the device and shows a connected indicator. |
| Is the controller registered in the game? | The game assigns it to a player slot or team. |
| Does the selected mode support the intended player count? | Some modes support fewer local players than the title’s headline maximum. |
| Is the controller type supported? | A game may distinguish a single Joy-Con, a Joy-Con pair and a Pro Controller, for example. |
| Are accessories or wireless features consuming capacity? | Bluetooth audio and certain communication features can change the available controller count. |
Quick platform comparison
| Platform | First pairing method covered here | Important capacity or layout qualification | Documented recovery point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | HOME Menu > Controllers > Change Grip and Order, then hold SYNC. | Up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances; Bluetooth audio limits this to no more than two. Joy-Con can be paired as a grip or used horizontally. | Reconnect by pressing a button; clear pairings from Controllers and Sensors only as a last resort. |
| PlayStation 5 | Connect a first-time DualSense by USB and press PS. | The game still sets the local-player limit. DualSense Edge guidance is specific: one PS5 per Edge pairing and up to four Edge controllers at once. | Turn off the console, press the controller’s rear reset button, reconnect by USB and press PS. |
| Xbox | Use current instructions for the exact console and controller model. | Do not infer a limit or button sequence from another Xbox generation; verify both with current official support. | Use the model-specific manufacturer procedure if the pad is not recognized. |
This comparison describes system connection, not guaranteed simultaneous players in a particular title. Always confirm the selected game and mode.
Nintendo Switch: pair several controllers
Nintendo’s documented procedure starts from the HOME Menu. The official pairing and capacity details are in the Nintendo Switch Controller Pairing FAQ and the Joy-Con pairing instructions.
Open the pairing screen
- From the HOME Menu, open Controllers.
- Choose Change Grip and Order.
- Pair each controller while this screen is open.
Pair a wireless controller
- Hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Wait for the player LED(s) to remain lit. Steady LEDs indicate that the controller is connected.
- Repeat the process for each additional controller.
- On the pairing screen, confirm the grip or orientation shown for each player before leaving the screen.
Pressing the SYNC button for at least one second temporarily disconnects a controller. If a connected controller drops out, press a button on it to reconnect it.
Choose the correct Joy-Con arrangement
Pairing does not tell the Switch how you intend to hold the Joy-Con. Confirm the layout shown on the pairing screen:

- One Joy-Con horizontally: press SL and SR on that Joy-Con. This lets one person use a single Joy-Con as a compact controller.
- Switch Pro Controller: pair it as one controller and follow the on-screen confirmation.
When Joy-Con are connected wirelessly, the left and right units count separately. A Switch Pro Controller counts as one controller. The game still decides whether those arrangements are accepted in its local mode.

Register players inside the game
- Start the game and select its Local, Multiplayer or equivalent mode.
- When the game asks for players, have each person press the requested button on the controller they will use.
- Select the controller layout for every player: a single horizontal Joy-Con, a Joy-Con pair or a Pro Controller, if offered.
- Confirm the player count and begin the match.
Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe local multiplayer instructions demonstrate this game-level step. The example is important because the console can be paired correctly while the game is still waiting for each player to choose a controller.
Understand the Switch’s controller ceiling
Nintendo says, “In most circumstances, up to eight wireless controllers can be connected to a console.” That is a manufacturer-published connection capacity, not a promise that every game supports eight local players. Nintendo qualifies the number by controller type, features in use and local communication.
Bluetooth audio is a specific restriction: when Bluetooth audio is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected. Disconnect Bluetooth audio before trying to add a third wireless controller. Also check the selected game mode before buying another controller; its local-player limit may be lower than the console’s connection capacity.

A Joy-Con charging grip, sold separately, can connect to the dock with its included USB cable for USB connection pairing. It is an optional charging and wired-pairing method, not a requirement for ordinary wireless pairing, and it does not increase the Switch’s player capacity.
PlayStation 5: pair DualSense controllers
For a first-time DualSense pairing, use the documented USB method:
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- After the console recognizes it, repeat the first-time USB process for another controller if that controller has not previously been paired with the console.
- Open the game’s local multiplayer mode and follow its prompt to assign each connected controller to a player.
Use a cable that can carry data, not only charge. If the controller charges but the PS5 does not recognize it, try another known-good data cable and USB port before treating it as a software problem.
DualSense recovery when pairing fails
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press the small reset button on the back of the DualSense controller.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 by USB.
- Press the PS button.
These recovery steps and controller-software guidance are documented by PlayStation in its Controllers Support page.
DualSense Edge qualification
PlayStation documents a specific restriction for the DualSense Edge: one Edge controller can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time, and up to four Edge controllers can be used simultaneously. Do not apply those Edge figures to every PS5 controller or every game. The local player count remains a game-level decision, and the title must support the intended number of local players.

Xbox: verify the current official procedure
The readable official Xbox material available for this guide did not provide a verifiable pairing sequence or controller-capacity figure. Because button combinations, menus and limits can vary by console generation and controller model, this guide does not publish a guessed Xbox procedure.
For Xbox, open the current support instructions for your exact console and controller, complete the system-level pairing there, and then use the game’s local-multiplayer screen to add each player. Confirm the title’s local-player limit and supported controller types before purchasing additional pads. If a controller is not recognized, use the model-specific recovery steps from its manufacturer rather than relying on a sequence intended for another Xbox generation.
Game-level setup: the step people often miss
Once the console shows all controllers as connected, the game may still show only one player. That normally means the game has not registered the other controllers yet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose the game’s local or couch-multiplayer mode, not its online-only mode.
- Wait for the “press a button to join” or equivalent player-registration prompt.
- Have each player press the requested button on a different controller.
- Assign teams, profiles or guest status if the game asks for them.
- Review the displayed player count before starting. If the game refuses a player, check its mode-specific limit rather than repeatedly pairing the same controller.
Some games support several local players in one mode but fewer in another. A race, campaign, tournament, split-screen map or minigame can impose its own limit even when the main menu advertises a larger number.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The console does not see a controller
- Charge the controller or connect it by the documented USB method.
- Return to the console’s controller screen and pair one controller at a time.
- On Switch, hold SYNC for at least one second and wait for steady player LEDs.
- On PS5, reconnect the DualSense by USB and press PS.
- If the controller is third-party, check its maker’s compatibility statement and pairing instructions. Nintendo directs users with third-party pairing issues to the manufacturer.
The console sees it, but the game does not
- Enter the game’s local multiplayer mode and complete its player/controller-selection prompt.
- Choose the correct physical layout. On Switch, a Joy-Con pair and a single horizontal Joy-Con are different choices.
- Check that the selected mode supports the desired number of local players and that the controller type is accepted.
- Disconnect unused controllers if the game is assigning the wrong pad to a player slot, then register the intended controllers again.
A Switch controller was connected and then disappeared
Press a button on the temporarily disconnected controller to reconnect it. Holding SYNC for at least one second disconnects a Switch controller temporarily, so avoid pressing SYNC while trying to wake a pad.
A Switch Pro Controller will not pair over USB
Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing troubleshooting recommends trying another dock USB port or cable, pressing SYNC once and then pressing another button, and checking whether the controller is the official HAC-013 model when model identity is relevant.
You need to clear Switch wireless pairings

Bluetooth audio blocks an additional Switch controller
Disconnect the Bluetooth audio device, then return to the controller-pairing screen and connect the additional controller. Nintendo’s stated restriction is no more than two wireless controllers while Bluetooth audio is connected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing controllers and accessories
For a Switch setup, an additional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is an option when the game supports it. A single Joy-Con can be enough for games that accept horizontal Joy-Con play, while a Joy-Con pair is treated as one controller when the game asks for the paired grip. Verify the game’s supported layouts before buying.
A Joy-Con charging grip is useful when you want a wired pairing or charging arrangement through the dock, but it is optional and does not create another player slot. Generic compatibility adapters are a poor default choice when their platform acceptance and reliability have not been verified for the console and game you use.

- Have the right number of usable pads: count controllers according to the arrangement the game accepts, not merely the number of plastic pieces on the table.
- Keep a data cable available for PS5: first-time DualSense pairing requires USB recognition, not charging alone.
- Do not leave Bluetooth audio connected on Switch if you need more than two wireless controllers.
- Confirm mode-specific support: local multiplayer, split-screen, races and other modes can have different player limits.
- Check third-party documentation: a pad that works with one console generation or game is not automatically accepted by another.
- Do not buy an accessory to solve a software limit: the charging grip provides charging or USB pairing, but it does not increase capacity.
- Reset only after simpler checks: clearing Switch pairings means pairing every controller again.
A practical pre-game checklist
- Every controller is charged or connected with a suitable data cable.
- The console’s controller screen shows each intended controller as connected.
- On Switch, every Joy-Con has the correct grip or horizontal orientation confirmed.
- Bluetooth audio is disconnected on Switch if you need more than two wireless controllers.
- The game is in local multiplayer mode.
- The game’s player count and controller-type support match your plan.
- Each player has pressed the join button and appears in a player slot.
- Unused controllers and accessories are disconnected if they interfere with assignment.
Bottom line
Pairing is only half the job. Connect each controller through the console’s documented method, confirm the physical layout, and then register every player inside the game. Treat the console’s controller capacity as an upper connection limit—not as a guarantee of local players—and account for controller type, game mode, wireless features and accessories before assuming another controller will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a controller connected to the console but missing from the game?
System pairing and game registration are separate. Open the title’s local multiplayer mode and have each player press the requested join button, then choose the correct controller layout and player slot.
Can a Nintendo Switch use eight controllers in every game?
No. Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be connected in most circumstances, but controller type, features, local communication and the game’s own player limit can reduce the practical number.
Why will a third wireless Switch controller not connect?
If Bluetooth audio is connected, Nintendo limits the console to no more than two wireless controllers. Disconnect Bluetooth audio, then pair the additional controller. The game may also support fewer players.

How do two people use one pair of Joy-Con?
For one controller, press L on the left Joy-Con and R on the right, or the paired ZL and ZR buttons when prompted. To give one Joy-Con to each player, select the horizontal arrangement and press SL and SR on each unit as shown on the pairing screen.

Is a Joy-Con charging grip required for multiplayer?
No. It is a separately sold accessory that can provide charging and USB connection pairing through the dock. Ordinary wireless pairing does not require it, and it does not add a player slot.
What is the first-time pairing method for a PS5 DualSense?
Turn on the PS5, connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable and press the PS button. Then complete the game’s local player-registration prompt.
What should I do if a DualSense will not pair?
Turn off the PS5, press the small reset button on the back of the controller, reconnect it by USB and press PS. Try another known-good data cable or USB port if the controller only charges.
Can I use the DualSense Edge limit as the limit for all PS5 controllers?
No. PlayStation’s documented figures are specific to the Edge: one Edge can pair with only one PS5 at a time and up to four Edge controllers can be used simultaneously. The game still determines local-player support.
Should I clear all Switch pairings when one controller fails?
Only as a last resort. System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers clears the wireless pairing list, so every controller must be paired again afterward.
Where are the Xbox steps?
Use current official instructions for the exact Xbox console and controller model. Pairing sequences and limits can vary, so a procedure copied from another generation should not be assumed to work.
The Bottom Line
Pair each controller at the console, confirm its layout, and register every player inside the game. The title and mode—not the console’s maximum connection count alone—decide how many people can play.
