How to Connect MCP Servers to an AI Agent Without Giving Them Your Keys

MCP lets an AI application discover and use functions provided by a server, but connecting a server is an access decision—not a safety guarantee. To reduce the risk, limit the actions and data each connection can reach, use authorization appropriate to the tools, protect credentials, and require review for consequential actions. MCP standardizes how context and tools are offered; it does not make every server trustworthy or make a model immune to malicious instructions.

What an MCP server does—and what it does not do

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a way for an AI application to receive context and discover or call capabilities supplied by servers. The official MCP specification overview describes three server-side building blocks: prompts, resources, and tools. Tools are executable functions; they can retrieve information or take actions such as making API requests or writing files.

In practical terms, an MCP server makes capabilities available to a client, such as an AI application. What the model can actually do depends on the tools exposed, the permissions and credentials behind them, and the client’s handling of tool calls. A tool description is not an access control: it can explain what a function is intended to do, but it does not itself restrict what that function can reach.

That distinction is the key to “not handing over your keys.” The goal is not to assume a connection is harmless. It is to avoid giving a connection broader access than its task requires, and to make risky actions visible and controllable.

What to check before connecting a server

Assess the connection by the powers it grants, not just by its name or the task it advertises. For each server, identify the information its tools can read, the systems or files they can change, and which credentials or authorization flows are involved.

  • Read access: Identify which files, records, messages, or other information the tools can retrieve.
  • Write or action access: Check whether tools can create, edit, delete, send, purchase, or otherwise change something. Treat API requests and file writes as actions, not merely as “context.”
  • Authorization scope: Determine whether authorization covers the whole server or only selected protected tools.
  • Credential handling: Find out who issues credentials, what they authorize, and whether they are bound to the authorization server that issued them.
  • Human review: Decide whether consequential tool calls should require explicit user approval.
  • Compatibility: Confirm the client and server support the same specification version and any extensions the setup relies on.

As a practical least-access rule, enable only the tools needed for the task and avoid connecting a server to accounts or data it does not need. If a tool can make an irreversible or high-impact change, prefer a workflow where the user can inspect and approve the call before it runs. These are access decisions to make around an MCP connection; MCP does not make them automatically.

How authorization choices differ

MCP deployments can apply authorization at different boundaries. The right fit depends on whether all server capabilities should require authorization, whether some tools are meant to be public, and whether access needs to be centrally managed across an organization.

Approach How access is applied When to consider it Important qualification
Authorization for an entire server Access to the server is authorized as a whole. When every capability on that server should be subject to the same access boundary. The MCP Apps authorization documentation describes this as one pattern; the specific client and server must support the implementation.
Authorization for protected tools Selected tools require authorization while public tools can remain available without a token. When a server intentionally offers both public capabilities and protected ones. The MCP Apps authorization documentation describes this pattern. The boundary should match the sensitivity and intended exposure of the tools.
Enterprise-Managed Authorization (EMA) An organization can centrally provision MCP server access through its identity provider. When an organization wants users to reach approved servers after login without separate per-server OAuth flows. The extension is described as stable in Paul Carleton’s June 18, 2026 announcement. Support by the identity provider, client, and server still matters; EMA is not a safety certification.

For an individual connection, ask whether the authorization model matches the tools’ exposure. For an organizational deployment, centralized provisioning can make access administration more consistent, but approval of a server should still depend on what its tools can read and change.

Credentials: what changed in the 2026 specification revision

The MCP project’s July 28, 2026 release announcement describes authorization hardening in specification revision 2026-07-28. It says clients validate the iss parameter in authorization responses and credentials are bound to the authorization server that issued them. These details help prevent authorization credentials from being accepted outside the issuer relationship they are meant for; they do not establish that a server’s tools are benign or appropriately scoped.

The same release says Dynamic Client Registration is deprecated in favor of Client ID Metadata Documents, while remaining available for backward compatibility for now. That is a version-specific protocol change, not a guarantee that a particular client or server already implements the replacement. Verify support in the actual software you deploy.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

Never treat a credential as safe merely because it is used through MCP. Consider what it authorizes, who issued it, which server receives it, and how the client and server enforce its scope. A protocol-level authorization improvement cannot compensate for credentials with excessive permissions or a server that exposes more capability than the task needs.

Tool annotations and prompt injection are separate concerns

Tool annotations can describe behavior—for example, whether a tool is read-only or destructive—and may help an MCP host reason about risk. They are useful metadata, not a security barrier. The official MCP tool-annotations article states: “They don’t make the model resist prompt injection.”

Prompt injection is a risk in which content encountered by a model attempts to influence its behavior. An annotation can help a host or user understand what a tool is meant to do, but it does not ensure the model will ignore malicious instructions or prevent an unsafe call. Keep authorization and tool design as the controls on what can be accessed or changed; use annotations as additional information, not as permission to grant broad access.

When MCP Apps add an interface

MCP Apps can let a server provide an interface alongside its tools. The official MCP Apps announcement describes sandboxed iframes, predeclared templates that hosts can review, auditable JSON-RPC messages, and the option for a host to require explicit approval for UI-initiated tool calls.

Those are design controls for the MCP Apps extension. They should not be generalized into a claim that every MCP server, client, or interface is sandboxed or requires approval. Check which controls the particular host and server implement, and whether user approval covers the actions that matter in your setup.

Specification changes make version checks important

The MCP project announced revision 2026-07-28 on July 28, 2026. Its release article describes a stateless protocol core, header-based routing, cache hints for list and read operations, an extensions framework, authorization hardening, and a formal deprecation policy. It also says legacy HTTP+SSE is deprecated with an offramp of at least twelve months.

These are release-specific statements. A setup may use older client or server software, and an extension’s presence in the ecosystem does not mean every implementation supports it. Before relying on a feature, check the stable specification and the documentation for the client, server, and identity provider involved. The official server overview is marked as a draft path, so use the current stable specification for normative behavior.

The July 28, 2026 release article also reports close to half-a-billion downloads a month across Tier 1 SDKs, and says the TypeScript and Python SDKs each crossed one billion total downloads. Those figures are claims reported by MCP maintainers, not independently verified measurements; they indicate project-reported adoption, not the security or quality of any particular server.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List the tools and their effects. Separate information retrieval from actions that write, send, delete, or otherwise change data.
  2. Match access to the job. Expose only the tools and information the intended task needs; do not infer narrow permissions from a friendly tool description.
  3. Choose the authorization boundary. Decide whether the whole server should be protected or only selected tools, and use centrally managed provisioning only where the required identity-provider, client, and server support exists.
  4. Inspect credential and version support. Verify how credentials are issued and scoped, whether issuer binding is implemented where relevant, and which MCP specification revision and extensions the software supports.
  5. Set a review threshold. Require user review for consequential calls when the host supports it, and do not rely on annotations or a server-provided interface alone to make a call safe.
  6. Reassess after changes. If tools, permissions, software versions, or extensions change, review the access decision again rather than assuming the earlier approval still fits.

No single MCP feature answers whether a connection is safe. The meaningful unit to assess is the complete path: the server’s exposed tools, the data and systems behind them, the authorization and credentials, the client’s controls, and the user’s opportunity to review important actions.
