LibreTime’s documented outputs are Icecast and SHOUTcast, while YouTube Live receives a stream from an encoder. To connect them, send LibreTime’s scheduled audio to Icecast, run a separate relay/encoder that reads that audio and sends it to YouTube, then monitor both sides. The relay is the bridge; the available documentation does not establish a native LibreTime-to-YouTube output or certify a particular relay implementation.
How the connection works
The practical signal path is:
LibreTime scheduled playout → Icecast stream → separate audio-to-video relay/encoder → YouTube Live
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
LibreTime handles radio automation and publishes its output to Icecast or SHOUTcast. The separate relay connects to that source and sends an encoder stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If you want a visual presentation, the relay also needs to provide video; an audio-only radio source does not supply that by itself.

What to prepare before configuring it
LibreTime and Icecast
- An operating LibreTime installation with a scheduled programme or playlist ready to play.
- An Icecast output configured in LibreTime. Record the source host, port, mount, audio format, and credentials needed by the relay.
- Access to the Icecast server configuration if you add outputs. LibreTime’s configuration reference describes up to three Icecast outputs; if more than two outputs share one Icecast server, its documentation says to raise the Icecast source limit.
LibreTime documents Icecast output formats including AAC, MP3, Ogg, and Opus. The format you choose still has to be usable by your relay and compatible with the YouTube encoder ingest format.
A relay/encoder and a video source
- A separate process or service that can connect to the Icecast mount, encode or package its audio, and send it to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS.
- A video feed if you want the YouTube broadcast to include visuals. It may be a static or looped visual, depending on your chosen relay; confirm that your encoder can produce the format YouTube accepts.
- A machine or hosted environment that can remain online for the broadcast, with sufficient network capacity and a plan to restart or monitor the relay.
The cited LibreTime and YouTube documentation does not specify a particular bridge, script, or relay product, nor does it certify one. Treat any third-party implementation you select as a separate component to evaluate and maintain.

YouTube channel access
Before setup, check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube lists both as livestreaming prerequisites. You will also need permission to manage the channel’s Live Control Room and its stream key.
Connect LibreTime to YouTube Live
- Configure LibreTime’s Icecast output. In LibreTime, set up an Icecast output for the radio programme. Note the host, port, mount, format, and any credentials exactly as configured. Confirm that scheduled playout is reaching that mount before involving YouTube.
- Check the source independently. Use a compatible player or another known-good Icecast client to confirm that the mount is reachable and audio is playing. This separates a LibreTime/Icecast problem from a later relay or YouTube problem.
- Set up the relay/encoder. Configure it to read the Icecast source and transmit to YouTube. Select an audio output YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest supports—AAC or MP3—and provide video if your broadcast needs a visual. The exact settings and UI depend on the relay you choose; the official sources cited here do not give a universal LibreTime bridge configuration.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in a public configuration, or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Use secure ingestion and compatible encoder settings. Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as encrypted ingestion. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant-bitrate encoding and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the available upstream bandwidth rather than assuming a single value fits every setup.
- Preview before going live. Wait for the encoder preview in the Live Control Room, then use its Go live control as directed for the event. Check that the audio is present, the visual is correct if used, and the stream health is acceptable before treating the broadcast as operational.
- Keep the whole chain supervised. Monitor LibreTime/Icecast and the relay separately. Test what happens when the source drops, the relay restarts, or the network is interrupted. LibreTime’s scheduled playout and Icecast fallback mounts can help with continuity inside the radio chain, but they do not restart or fail over the separate YouTube relay.
Choose where the relay runs
The relay is an independent operational component. Where it runs affects reliability, maintenance, and cost; none of these options is endorsed as the official LibreTime-to-YouTube method.

| Relay location | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| On the LibreTime host | Fewer machines to manage, but relay load and failures share a host with radio automation. Check available CPU, memory, storage, and outbound bandwidth. |
| On a separate always-on server | Separates the relay from LibreTime and can make troubleshooting clearer, but adds a machine, network path, and maintenance responsibility. |
| On hosted compute | Can avoid relying on a computer or connection at home, but introduces recurring hosting cost and provider/network dependencies. Confirm that the service can run your chosen relay and sustain its required bandwidth. |
Whichever location you choose, configure an appropriate restart/supervision approach and alerting. A stable Icecast source does not prove that the relay is still connected to YouTube.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A single 24/7 broadcast exceeds YouTube’s documented 12-hour archive threshold: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, while streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s encoder guidance. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on one uninterrupted event to create a complete replay or preserve full rewind for the entire day.

If a durable archive matters, record the programme independently. If you want YouTube replays, plan shorter broadcasts and verify the current Live Control Room workflow before adopting a split schedule; ending or splitting events changes the operations you must supervise.
Copyright and programming checks
- Use audio and visuals you own or have permission to transmit on YouTube. A radio schedule can contain third-party music, recordings, artwork, or other material, so check rights for the actual broadcast and any replay you intend to retain.
- Do not assume that automation, attribution, a radio licence, or having a recording makes every YouTube use permissible. Confirm the relevant rights and applicable YouTube policies for your content and territory.
- Review the stream preview and monitor the live output. A valid Icecast feed does not establish that the YouTube broadcast is using the intended show, correct visual, or correct stream key.
Troubleshoot by locating the failing link
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Recovery steps |
|---|---|---|
| No audio at the Icecast mount | LibreTime output or scheduled playout | Confirm a programme is scheduled and playing, then check the Icecast output host, port, mount, format, and credentials in LibreTime. Test the mount with a separate client before moving downstream. |
| Icecast audio works, but the relay cannot connect | Relay source settings or network access | Recheck the source address, mount, port, and any credentials. Confirm the relay can reach the Icecast host and supports the source format. |
| Relay connects, but YouTube has no preview | YouTube destination settings or encoder compatibility | Verify the current YouTube server URL and stream key, confirm RTMP/RTMPS selection, and check that the encoder is sending compatible audio and video. Keep the key private; replace it in the encoder if it has been exposed. |
| Preview appears but audio or video is missing | Relay output mapping or media format | Check that the relay is passing the intended Icecast audio and that any required video input is active. Confirm the outgoing audio codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and inspect the Live Control Room preview. |
| Broadcast stops after a source or network interruption | Relay recovery and supervision | Check whether the relay reconnected to Icecast and YouTube, and configure or repair its restart/recovery process. LibreTime or Icecast fallback behavior alone does not provide YouTube relay failover. |
| Expected replay is missing or incomplete | Event duration and YouTube archive behavior | Check the broadcast duration and archive status. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use an independent local recording when a complete archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your requirement is specifically to relay LibreTime’s live Icecast schedule, StreamNeo is not that bridge: it plays uploaded videos and does not ingest LibreTime or go live from a camera. For a YouTube stream built from uploaded recordings or a playlist instead, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
