To enroll corporate iPhones with Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), connect Apple Business Manager (ABM) to Microsoft Intune with an ADE token, assign each iPhone to Intune in ABM, then sync the device and assign it an enrollment policy in Intune. When a new or wiped iPhone starts Setup Assistant and connects to the internet, it can enroll remotely. ADE is for organization-owned devices associated with Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, not personal BYOD phones.
What you need before connecting ABM to Intune
- An Intune tenant with a suitable license. Microsoft identifies Intune Plan 1 as the minimum for iOS/iPadOS management.
- Administrator access to the Intune admin center and the organization’s Apple Business Manager account (or Apple School Manager).
- An organization-controlled Apple ID for managing the ADE token. Avoid a personal Apple ID: the organization needs continued access to manage and renew the token.
- An active Apple MDM Push certificate in Intune. It is required for iOS/iPadOS management and bulk enrollment, and is separate from the ADE token.
- A corporate iPhone associated with the organization in Apple Business or Apple School Manager. The phone must be new or wiped so it can enter enrollment during Setup Assistant.
Microsoft describes ADE as an Apple enrollment method for corporate-owned devices purchased through Apple Business or Apple School Manager. See the Intune overview of Apple Automated Device Enrollment.

Connect Apple Business Manager to Intune
- Start an enrollment program token in Intune. In the Intune admin center, go to Devices > Enrollment > Apple mobile > Bulk Enrollment Methods > Enrollment program tokens, then add a token. Accept the data-sharing permission prompt and download the Intune public-key certificate (.pem). Keep the Intune browser tab open while completing the setup; Microsoft warns that closing it invalidates the downloaded certificate in the unfinished token flow.
- Register Intune as an MDM server in Apple Business. Sign in to Apple Business Manager with the organization’s Apple ID, add an MDM server (some Apple interfaces call it a device management service), and upload the .pem file. Save the server and download its server token (.p7m). The server display name is for reference and does not have to match the Intune tenant or URL.
- Assign iPhone serial numbers to the MDM server. In Apple Business, assign the iPhones that should enroll to the MDM server you just created. Assignment can be done during device setup in Apple Business or later, but it must be in place before the iPhone enrolls.
- Upload the server token to Intune. Return to the open Intune setup, enter the Apple ID used to retrieve the server token, upload the .p7m file, and create the enrollment program token. Intune connects to Apple and syncs device information.
- Run a sync from Intune. Open the token’s Devices > Sync area to import assigned Apple device records. A full sync can be run no more than once every seven days, so avoid repeatedly triggering it while troubleshooting.
Follow Microsoft’s ADE token setup instructions for the current token flow.
Create and assign an ADE enrollment policy
In the current Intune policy experience, go to Devices > Device onboarding > Enrollment > Apple mobile > Enrollment program tokens, select the token, choose Enrollment policies, and create an iOS/iPadOS policy. Microsoft says the older Profiles experience differs and will eventually be retired, so use Enrollment policies when creating a new policy. The detailed setup is in Microsoft’s ADE setup guide.

Choose user affinity for the device’s role
- User affinity: Use this when one person will use the iPhone and it should be associated with that person.
- No user affinity: Use this for a device not assigned to one individual, such as a kiosk, point-of-sale terminal, or shared utility phone.
- Microsoft Entra shared mode: Consider this for supported shared-use deployments that require the shared mode experience.
Select the authentication experience
For user-affinity ADE, Microsoft recommends Setup Assistant with modern authentication. Microsoft documents support beginning with iOS/iPadOS 13.0; this flow supports multifactor authentication and just-in-time registration. Configured appropriately, it can avoid requiring a separate Company Portal app during enrollment. Review Microsoft’s ADE overview and policy setup guidance when choosing the authentication method.
Set supervision, enrollment lock, and Setup Assistant panes
ADE supports supervised corporate devices. Enable locked enrollment if users must not be able to remove the management profile through device settings. Choose which Setup Assistant panes users should see or skip; if a pane is hidden, make sure users know how to complete that configuration later in Settings if needed.

Assign the policy before activation
Assign an enrollment policy to each device before it is activated, or configure a default policy on the token so newly synced devices receive one. Microsoft warns that a synced iPhone with no policy assigned can fail enrollment when it is activated.
Enroll and activate the iPhone
- Confirm in Apple Business that the iPhone’s serial number is assigned to the Intune MDM server.
- Confirm the device has synced into the Intune token and has an enrollment policy assigned.
- Give the new or wiped corporate iPhone to its user and connect it to the internet during normal Setup Assistant setup.
- Apple detects the organization’s assignment during setup and starts remote enrollment into Intune. The user then proceeds through the Setup Assistant screens and authentication configured in the policy.
ADE lets corporate iPhones be shipped directly to users without an IT technician manually enrolling each device.

Maintain the tokens and resolve common enrollment failures
Renew the ADE token and preserve account access
Renew the ADE enrollment program token annually. Microsoft also says to renew it if the Apple ID password for the token creator changes or that user leaves the organization. Keep the Apple account identifier and ownership documented so a future administrator can maintain the connection. See Microsoft’s guidance for managing Apple devices and tokens.
Renew the Apple MDM Push certificate separately
The Apple MDM Push certificate is not the ADE token and must also be renewed annually. Microsoft distinguishes the impact of the two credentials: changing the Apple ID for the ADE token does not affect currently enrolled devices until re-enrollment, while changing the Apple ID associated with the APNs certificate requires devices to re-enroll. If the iPhone does not enroll
- Verify Apple assignment: Make sure the serial number is assigned to the intended MDM server in Apple Business before activation.
- Verify Intune sync and policy: Confirm the device appears under the token in Intune and has an ADE enrollment policy assigned. Check whether the token has a default policy for newly synced devices.
- Check enrollment restrictions: Make sure the tenant’s enrollment restrictions allow corporate iOS/iPadOS devices.
- Check device eligibility: ADE does not support personal/BYOD devices, or devices still enrolled with another MDM provider. Remove the existing MDM enrollment before attempting ADE.
- Allow for the sync limit: A full Intune sync is limited to once every seven days. If you delete a device only from Intune while it remains assigned to the MDM server in Apple Business, it can reappear on the next full sync; unassign it in Apple Business if it should not return.
