Then set the Anthropic API base URL to https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com and the Anthropic auth token to the API key you created in Bluehost’s AI Tooling panel. Standard setup uses a Claude Code OAuth token, which bypasses your AI Credits balance. Bluehost’s guide was updated September 17, 2026.
What you need first
- A Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or VDS. Bluehost documents AI Credits as available on those plans only.
- NanoClaw installed as a Bluehost application on that server.
- An AI Credits API key, created in the AI Tooling area of the Bluehost Portal. Bluehost says the key begins with
sk-. - Comfort with SSH and a Linux command line.
This is purely a software configuration task. No extra hardware or accessories are involved.

Connect NanoClaw during first-run setup
- Connect to the server over SSH, as described in Bluehost’s NanoClaw installation guide.
- Enter the NanoClaw user session:
machinectl shell nanoclaw@ - Inside that session, run
cd ~/nanoclaw, thenbash nanoclaw.sh. - At the prompt “How would you like to begin?”, choose Advanced (override defaults).
- Choose Anthropic API base URL and enter
https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com. - Choose Anthropic auth token and paste your AI Credits API key. Treat it as a password: don’t publish it or commit it to a shared repository.
- Select Done — continue with setup and answer the remaining prompts. The optional OneCLI vault and messaging connections are separate from the gateway settings.
- Let NanoClaw run its built-in connection check. Bluehost’s guide shows the sandbox and vault starting, then a test message confirming the assistant responds.
The Standard path generates a Claude Code OAuth token instead. It will work, but its usage won’t draw down your AI Credits balance, so don’t pick it if billing matters.

Route the bundled Claude Code through the gateway
Bluehost treats NanoClaw’s model connection and Claude Code’s shell session as separate configurations. If you also want Claude Code on the server to use AI Credits, set these inside the nanoclaw machine session:

export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=YOUR_AI_CREDITS_API_KEYThen start claude and complete any first-run trust and setup prompts. Run /status and check two things: the auth source should be ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, and the Anthropic base URL should be https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com. Bluehost’s sample output shows Claude Code 2.1.160 and a specific model; those are examples from its page, and your version and model list may differ.
Make it persistent
Exports last only for the current shell. Bluehost recommends adding both values under the env object in your global ~/.claude/settings.json, not in a project-level file that might be checked into version control. Replace the placeholder with your own key and restrict access to the file, since it holds a credential.

Later logins and troubleshooting
With linger enabled, NanoClaw starts automatically at boot. Bluehost’s guide gives these commands, run from the nanoclaw session (machinectl shell nanoclaw@):

If usage isn’t reducing your credit balance, you most likely chose Standard setup. Rerun bash nanoclaw.sh and select Advanced, then confirm both override values.

How AI Credits work and cost
AI Credits are a prepaid balance that pays for supported models through a single gateway and key. Bluehost’s help page lists these terms as of 2026, and says rates can change:

Each credit is $0.010, so larger packs are not cheaper per credit. Pick a size based on expected usage. How many credits a request costs depends on the model and the tokens used, so check the live rates in the AI Tooling panel.

- The wallet is account-level and shared across all keys and apps.
- Credits last 12 months from your most recent purchase, and any top-up resets that window for the whole balance.
- Credits don’t auto-renew and are non-refundable. An expired balance resets to zero, though your API keys and workspace remain.
Bluehost’s AI Gateway page, viewed October 5, 2026, advertised 39 supported models. Treat that count, along with any hosting promotions or renewal prices on the page, as a snapshot that may change.
If you don’t have an eligible server yet
Check that you’re on a Self-Managed VPS or VDS before buying credits. Bluehost’s purchase guide describes buying a VDS with NanoClaw preinstalled; plan selection covers location and hardware, and prices may change. Compare current introductory and renewal pricing and the resources your workload needs.
