To connect a scanner to Odoo Warehouse, first choose a setup for the way your team works: a USB scanner at a fixed workstation, a Bluetooth scanner paired with a phone or tablet, or a mobile computer with an integrated scanner. Then enable Barcode in Odoo, configure the scanner to send each scan correctly, and test it in a real receipt or delivery. Odoo cautions that mobile-computer compatibility depends on the specific hardware and configuration, so test the exact device before deploying it widely.
Choose the scanner setup that fits the warehouse
Odoo documents three common barcode-scanning setups. The main difference is where the operator scans and what device runs Odoo.

These connection patterns and compatibility qualifications are described in Odoo’s barcode hardware guide. Choose a device category based on the operator’s movement and work surface, then verify the scanner and host together.
Enable Barcode and prepare Odoo data
Connecting hardware is not enough: Odoo needs the Barcode feature enabled and the relevant records need barcode values.

- In Odoo Inventory, open Configuration → Settings.
- Enable Barcode Scanner and save the settings.
- Choose the barcode nomenclature appropriate to your operation. Odoo 17 documentation describes default UPC/EAN handling and an option for default GS1 nomenclature.
- Assign barcode values to the records your workflow scans, such as product variants, product packagings, and locations.
These settings and barcode assignment options are in Odoo 17’s Barcode software setup guide. Menu labels and available options may differ in other Odoo releases; use the documentation for the version deployed on your database.
Configure the scanner to send complete scans
USB scanners
Configure a USB scanner to act as a keyboard (HID), so the scanned value is entered into the active Odoo field as keyboard input. Set the scanner’s keyboard layout to match the host computer’s operating-system layout. If characters are transposed or unexpected symbols appear, check this layout match before changing Odoo data.

Many warehouse workflows also need a scan-ending suffix, usually Enter or carriage return, so the application recognizes that the barcode input is complete. Check the scanner manual and confirm its actual suffix behavior; the precise configuration varies by scanner.
Bluetooth scanners
Pair the Bluetooth scanner with the phone or tablet that will run Odoo, then test that the scan reaches the expected field and completes as intended. Pairing alone does not establish that every scanner, mobile device, and workflow combination is compatible.

Zebra Android handhelds
For Zebra Android devices, Odoo’s hardware guide describes enabling keyboard output in DataWedge and checking its key-event settings. DataWedge versions and device configurations can differ, so follow the instructions for the deployed Odoo release and the particular device rather than assuming one setup applies to every Zebra handheld.

Test a real warehouse operation before rollout
Test with the actual scanner, host device, browser or app, Odoo version, and barcode data that staff will use. A successful test in a text field does not by itself confirm that a warehouse transfer can be completed correctly.

- Scan representative products and check that the expected items and quantities appear.
- Review the operation lines and correct any discrepancies.
- Validate the transfer only after confirming the scanned items and quantities.
Odoo documents receipt and delivery processing in its Barcode receipts and deliveries guide. For mobile computers, include the full real-world workflow in compatibility testing, not just whether the browser opens Odoo.

Keep RFID and IoT requirements separate
RFID is a separate inventory workflow, not a requirement for ordinary barcode scanning. Odoo 19’s RFID guide describes pairing a Zebra RFD40 with a mobile computer or smartphone to scan RFID tags during an operation. Use that path only if the warehouse is working with RFID tags and operations; see Odoo’s RFID setup guide.
Odoo 19 also documents IoT Box and Windows virtual IoT as supported IoT systems. It states that an IoT Box subscription is required for production use and is created automatically when an IoT system connects to a database. The documentation does not establish that ordinary USB or Bluetooth barcode scanners must connect through IoT. See Odoo’s IoT system documentation for IoT-specific setup and subscription details.
