How to Connect AR Glasses to an iPhone, Android Phone, Laptop, or Game Console

The deciding factor is video output, not the shape of the connector. Most display-style AR glasses receive an audio-video signal through USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode (often called DisplayPort over USB-C). A USB-C socket that only handles charging and data will not drive the glasses. iPhone 15 and newer models can use a direct USB-C connection with compatible glasses; Lightning iPhones need an adapter chain. Laptops, desktops and consoles can connect directly when their USB-C port carries DisplayPort, or through a powered HDMI-to-USB-C adapter when their source is HDMI.

These instructions describe the connection methods documented by RayNeo and VITURE for their compatible models. Other glasses may use different cables, adapters, apps or wireless systems, so verify the exact glasses generation, source-device model, region and firmware before buying accessories.

What you need to verify before connecting

Start with the specifications for both devices. The glasses must accept the signal your source can provide, and the source port must output video in the format the glasses expect.

USB-C must support DisplayPort video

Look for wording such as DisplayPort over USB-C, DP Alt Mode, USB-C video output or a DisplayPort symbol next to the port. A USB-C connector can be used only for charging and USB data; that port will not send a picture to wired display glasses. If the specification is unclear, check the device maker’s manual, contact support, or use the glasses maker’s compatibility list.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Use the supplied or approved cable

For a direct connection, use the cable supplied with the glasses or one explicitly approved by the manufacturer. Some USB-C cables are charge-only, while others lack the wiring or bandwidth needed for DisplayPort. A cable that works for charging a phone is not automatically suitable for video.

Separate mirroring from XR features

Basic mirroring puts the phone, computer or console’s picture in the glasses. Spatial anchoring, 3D playback, multiple virtual screens and other XR features may require a particular adapter, glasses generation and companion app. A connection that mirrors a screen successfully does not prove that every advanced feature is supported.

Connection options at a glance

Source Direct connection When an adapter is needed Important checks
Android phone USB-C to the glasses when the phone supports DisplayPort output When the phone lacks video over USB-C, a generic cable cannot add it; a supported video adapter or another source is required Exact phone variant, glasses model and regional compatibility
iPhone 15 or newer Supplied USB-C cable to the iPhone A product-specific XR or charging adapter may be needed for extra spatial features Unlock the iPhone and check feature support for the exact glasses
iPhone 14 or older Not directly through the Lightning port Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter plus a compatible HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter Charge the HDMI adapter as instructed; adapter compatibility is not universal
Laptop or desktop with USB-C DisplayPort USB-C cable to a video-capable port HDMI-only computers need a compatible powered HDMI-to-USB-C adapter Operating-system display mode, port capability and external-display limits
HDMI game console Usually through the console’s HDMI output and an HDMI XR adapter Required for PlayStation, Xbox and other HDMI sources Console output, adapter power and exact glasses compatibility
Handheld with USB-C DisplayPort Direct USB-C connection if the specific port supports video Needed if the USB-C port is charging/data only Check the handheld model and whether its port supports DP Alt Mode

How to connect AR glasses to an Android phone

1. Confirm the phone’s video capability

Read the exact model’s technical specifications. You need USB-C DisplayPort output, not merely USB-C charging. Manufacturer names for the feature vary, so search the manual for DisplayPort, DP Alt Mode, external display or wired screen output.

2. Check the glasses compatibility list

Confirm that the glasses support your Android model and the Android version it runs. A phone can technically output DisplayPort yet still have limited support for a particular glasses generation or its spatial features.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Make the direct connection

  1. Insert the supplied glasses cable into the glasses.
  2. Connect the other end to the phone’s USB-C port.
  3. Unlock the phone. Some models do not begin external-display output while locked.
  4. Wait for the glasses display to initialize. If Android presents an external-display or mirroring prompt, accept it and choose the desired mode.

4. If nothing appears

  • Recheck that the phone’s exact USB-C port supports DisplayPort.
  • Try the original cable or a manufacturer-approved replacement.
  • Remove a case that prevents the plug from seating fully.
  • Restart the phone with the glasses disconnected, then reconnect after unlocking.
  • Do not expect a passive USB-C cable to create video output on a phone that lacks DP Alt Mode.

Android compatibility can differ between apparently similar regional variants. Record the complete model number, not just the product family name, when checking support.

How to connect AR glasses to an iPhone

iPhone 15 and newer with USB-C

RayNeo and VITURE document direct USB-C connection for compatible glasses on iPhone 15-and-later models. Use the supplied cable, connect the glasses to the iPhone’s USB-C port, and unlock the phone. Standard screen mirroring may work immediately; advanced XR functions depend on the glasses model, adapter and app.

  1. Confirm that your glasses model lists the iPhone model as compatible.
  2. Connect the glasses with the supplied USB-C cable.
  3. Unlock the iPhone and wait for the external display to appear.
  4. Install or open the manufacturer’s required app only if you need spatial, 3D or multiscreen functions.

VITURE lists an optional USB-C XR Charging Adapter for additional SpaceWalker functions on supported devices. That accessory is not a universal requirement for every pair of glasses, and model exceptions or partial feature support may apply.

iPhone 14 and older with Lightning

Lightning iPhones cannot send the required USB-C DisplayPort signal through a simple Lightning-to-USB-C cable. RayNeo’s documented chain uses Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter followed by a compatible HDMI-to-USB-C adapter for the glasses.

  1. Connect Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the iPhone.
  2. Connect the adapter’s HDMI output to the HDMI input of a glasses-compatible HDMI-to-USB-C adapter.
  3. Connect the glasses to the adapter’s USB-C output using the approved glasses cable.
  4. Fully charge or otherwise power the HDMI adapter as its maker specifies; RayNeo’s instructions specifically call for a fully charged adapter.
  5. Unlock the iPhone and select mirroring if iOS presents a display option.

VITURE describes a similar arrangement using its HDMI XR Adapter together with Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter. These are product-specific chains: an adapter that works with one glasses family may not support another, and advanced XR functions may be unavailable even when basic mirroring works.

How to connect AR glasses to a laptop or desktop

Direct USB-C connection

Use a USB-C port that explicitly supports DisplayPort output. Connect the glasses, then configure the operating system if the display does not automatically mirror.

  1. Plug the approved cable into the glasses.
  2. Connect it to the computer’s video-capable USB-C port.
  3. On a Mac, open System Settings > Displays and choose mirror, extend or arrangement options.
  4. On Windows, open Settings > System > Display and select Duplicate (mirror) or Extend.
  5. Set the glasses as the intended display and adjust resolution or orientation if necessary.

If a laptop has several USB-C ports, they may not have identical capabilities. A port marked for charging or data alone will not work; try the port identified for DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or external displays.

HDMI-only computers

When the computer has HDMI video but no USB-C DisplayPort output, use a compatible, powered HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter. Connect the computer’s HDMI output to the adapter, connect the glasses to the adapter, and provide power according to the adapter instructions. The adapter must convert HDMI to the signal and connector arrangement the glasses require; a passive HDMI-to-USB-C cable is generally not an equivalent substitute.

When the computer detects no glasses

  • Try another video-capable USB-C port.
  • Disconnect another external monitor temporarily. Some computers support only one external display or impose limits based on the graphics hardware.
  • Open the operating system’s display settings and force detection or select the display manually.
  • Reconnect the glasses after the computer is awake and unlocked.
  • Test the supplied cable and adapter with no dock or hub in between; hubs can change display support.

How to connect AR glasses to a game console or handheld

USB-C handhelds and consoles

A handheld or console can connect directly only when its specific USB-C port outputs DisplayPort video. Check the model’s manual and confirm that the port is intended for external displays. Connect the supplied cable, wake the console and choose its external-display or mirroring mode if prompted.

PlayStation, Xbox and other HDMI consoles

For an HDMI console, VITURE documents using an HDMI XR Adapter with HDMI devices, including PlayStation and Xbox models. The general connection is:

  1. Connect the console’s HDMI output to the adapter’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the glasses to the adapter’s USB-C glasses output.
  3. Attach the adapter’s required power source or charge it fully, depending on the model.
  4. Turn on the console and select the appropriate display resolution if the console asks.
  5. Verify that the adapter and glasses combination supports the console’s output and any desired XR features.

Console video settings can prevent a handshake. If the glasses remain blank, temporarily choose a standard resolution and refresh rate, disable unusual HDR or variable-refresh options, and reconnect. Restore those settings only after a stable picture is established, and only if the glasses and adapter list them as supported.

Portable use and adapter battery

An HDMI XR Adapter is an active accessory, not just a plug. VITURE lists 2.8 hours of battery life for its HDMI XR Adapter; that is an accessory specification for that product, not a general runtime claim for AR glasses or every adapter. Carry a suitable power bank when the adapter’s battery is the limiting component.

Wireless pairing: when it applies and when it does not

Do not assume that display glasses pair like Bluetooth headphones. RayNeo states that its Air glasses do not support wireless connections and require the included USB-C cable. That statement applies to the Air family, not to every product marketed as AR glasses. Some products may offer wireless or companion-device modes, but those capabilities must be confirmed for the exact model.

Bluetooth may still be used by a product for audio, controls or an app while video remains wired. Treat audio pairing and display connection as separate functions unless the manufacturer explicitly documents otherwise.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Nothing happens after connecting

  • Confirm DP Alt Mode on the source port.
  • Unlock the phone or wake the computer or console.
  • Use the supplied cable and remove intermediate hubs.
  • Check that the glasses receive power and that any active adapter is charged or connected to power.

The phone charges but the glasses stay black

Charging proves only that the USB-C pins have power. It does not prove video output. Check the phone’s DisplayPort specification and the glasses compatibility list. If the phone lacks DP Alt Mode, a direct cable will not solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image flickers or repeatedly disconnects

  • Reseat both connectors and remove mechanical strain from the cable.
  • Try a shorter, approved USB-C cable.
  • Power an HDMI adapter as specified.
  • Disconnect other displays or docks from a computer.
  • Use a conservative resolution and refresh rate until the link is stable.

Basic mirroring works but spatial features do not

Check whether the feature requires a brand-specific XR or charging adapter, a particular glasses generation, a companion app or a supported operating-system version. Feature compatibility can be narrower than basic video compatibility.

The computer sees an external display but shows the wrong mode

Open the display settings, choose mirror or extend deliberately, and arrange the displays. On Windows use Settings > System > Display; on macOS use System Settings > Displays. If only one external display is supported, disconnect the other monitor while testing.

Choosing the right setup

Your goal Preferred path Trade-off
Simple phone screen mirroring Direct USB-C from a DP-capable Android phone or iPhone 15-and-newer Works only on supported ports and models
Older iPhone mirroring Lightning Digital AV Adapter plus a compatible powered HDMI-to-USB-C adapter More cables, external power and product-specific compatibility
Large-screen laptop use Direct USB-C DisplayPort connection Computer port capabilities and external-display limits apply
HDMI console gaming Compatible HDMI XR adapter Adapter battery or power is an additional dependency
3D, spatial anchoring or multiple virtual screens Manufacturer-approved XR adapter and app, if listed for your model Feature support is narrower than basic mirroring

Before you buy an adapter

  • Write down the exact source model, operating system and port type.
  • Write down the exact glasses model and generation.
  • Decide whether you need only a mirrored screen or advanced XR functions.
  • Check whether the adapter requires simultaneous charging, a full charge or a separate power supply.
  • Confirm regional and firmware qualifications in the current compatibility list.
  • Prefer an adapter explicitly listed for the glasses rather than assuming that any HDMI-to-USB-C product will work.

Key takeaways

  • USB-C connector shape alone does not establish video support; DisplayPort Alt Mode is the critical requirement for direct connections.
  • Android phones and computers connect directly only when the specific port carries DisplayPort video.
  • iPhone 15 and newer can use direct USB-C with compatible glasses, while older Lightning iPhones require a Lightning-to-HDMI-to-USB-C adapter chain.
  • HDMI consoles and HDMI-only computers need a compatible active adapter, with power requirements that vary by product.
  • Mirroring, 3D, spatial anchoring and multiscreen features have separate compatibility requirements.
