The reliable connection method is determined by video output, not by the shape of the plug. For a direct USB-C connection, your phone, computer, or handheld must send DisplayPort video through that port (usually called DisplayPort Alt Mode or DP Alt Mode). Connect the glasses with their supplied cable. If the host only has HDMI or DisplayPort, use an adapter or dock that the glasses manufacturer specifies for your exact model, and provide power as instructed.
USB-C ports that support only charging or data will not produce an image. Check the specifications for both devices before buying a cable, adapter, or glasses.

What you need to check before connecting
Identify the exact glasses model and the exact port on the host device. Then verify four things:
- Video output: the USB-C port must support DisplayPort video/DP Alt Mode. Thunderbolt 4 ports normally provide a compatible DisplayPort path, but confirm this in the computer maker’s specifications.
- Cable capability: use the included glasses cable whenever possible. A replacement cable must be a full-featured USB-C cable explicitly rated for video or DisplayPort transmission; charging and USB data alone are insufficient.
- Adapter compatibility: HDMI-to-USB-C adapters and docks are model-specific. A dock made for one glasses family is not automatically compatible with another.
- Power: many glasses have no internal battery and draw power from the phone, computer, handheld, adapter, or dock. A hub that accepts a charger can be important for long sessions.
Manufacturer guides use examples such as XREAL glasses, ROG XREAL R1, and Rokid Air. Those examples illustrate connection types, not a guarantee that every regional model, firmware version, operating-system release, or port will work.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How USB-C video actually works
USB-C describes a connector, not a feature set. The same-looking socket can carry only power, USB data, or power plus video. AR glasses need a DisplayPort signal over the cable. Look in the host’s technical specifications for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” or a Thunderbolt port with display support. A small DisplayPort or monitor symbol beside the socket can help, but the manufacturer’s specification is the authoritative check.
When the port is compatible, the glasses normally act as an external display. The host supplies the picture and usually the operating power. Resolution, refresh rate, audio behavior, and special spatial-display features depend on what the host’s graphics hardware and operating system can output; the glasses cannot add a display mode that the host does not support.
Compatibility by host type
| Host | Direct route | When an accessory is needed | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone | USB-C cable to a USB-C port with DP Alt Mode | Phones without DP video need a supported wireless or wired adapter path | Android model and regional variant determine video support |
| iPhone | USB-C iPhones that the glasses guide lists as supported | Lightning iPhones require a separate digital-video adapter path | XREAL One guidance lists iPhone 15 and later with an exception for iPhone 16E; other guides list particular iPhone generations |
| Laptop | USB-C DP Alt Mode or a supported Thunderbolt 4 port | HDMI/DisplayPort-only laptops need a compatible adapter or dock | Use the USB-C port designated for display output, not a charging-only port |
| Steam Deck or Steam Deck OLED | USB-C port with DP output | Dock or adapter if using another video output | Listed as a direct-connection example in XREAL guidance |
| ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go | USB-C DP Alt Mode when provided by that model | Model-specific dock for HDMI sources | ROG XREAL R1 documentation lists these handhelds for direct use when the port supports DP |
| Desktop PC or console | Direct USB-C only if the graphics output supports DP Alt Mode | HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or the glasses maker’s dock | Adapters commonly require USB power and sometimes external power |
| Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED | Use the route specified for the exact glasses model | Often a model-specific hub or dock | Switch USB-C power limits make generic adapters unreliable |
Connect a phone, laptop, or handheld over USB-C
- Confirm the port. Read the host specification for DP Alt Mode or DisplayPort video. Do not rely on the connector shape or on a generic “USB-C” label.
- Prepare the cable. Start with the cable supplied with the glasses. If replacing it, choose a full-featured USB-C video cable with DisplayPort support and a length suitable for wearing the glasses without strain.
- Connect the glasses. Plug the USB-C end into the glasses and the other end into the host’s video-capable USB-C port. On a supported connection, the glasses should power on and mirror or extend the host display.
- Select the display mode if needed. On Windows, press
Windows+Pand choose Duplicate or Extend. On macOS, open System Settings, choose Displays, and arrange or mirror the display. Handhelds usually show the external display automatically, although their display settings may offer resolution or refresh-rate choices. - Set the glasses’ position and audio preferences. Adjust brightness and volume with the glasses controls or the host. If the host offers several displays, select the glasses display before launching a game or video.
If nothing appears, disconnect and repeat the test with the host awake and unlocked. Verify that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that you used the port marked for video. A different USB-C socket on the same laptop may have completely different capabilities.

Phones specifically
Some Android phones expose DP Alt Mode while others expose USB-C only for charging and data. The XREAL xbx a01 guide lists selected Android phones, iPhone 15/16/17 models, supported iPads, and compatible laptops as examples; its list is not a universal compatibility database. The XREAL One Series guide describes direct use with compatible Android phones and iPhone 15 and later, while noting an iPhone 16E exception in that guide. Check the current guide for your exact model before purchase.
USB-C iPhones still need a glasses-compatible video path; the presence of USB-C alone does not prove one. Lightning iPhones require a digital-video adapter arrangement and may need additional power, so follow the glasses maker’s instructions rather than improvising with a charging adapter.
Connect a laptop or desktop PC
USB-C or Thunderbolt connection
Use a USB-C port that carries DisplayPort output. ROG XREAL R1 documentation also identifies Thunderbolt 4 as a direct route for supported computers. After connecting, use the operating system’s display controls to duplicate or extend the desktop. If the computer has multiple USB-C ports, consult its port diagram: some support charging and data only, while another carries display output.

HDMI or DisplayPort graphics output
A desktop graphics card’s HDMI or full-size DisplayPort socket cannot be connected to the glasses with a passive USB-C cable. Use an active HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or a dock specified for the glasses model. Follow the dock’s complete wiring order:
- Connect the computer or console’s HDMI/DisplayPort cable to the adapter or dock’s video input.
- Attach the USB cable required for power and, where applicable, data.
- Connect the dock to external power if its instructions require it. A computer’s USB socket may not provide enough power for every adapter.
- Connect the glasses to the dock’s glasses output with the supplied cable.
- Select the correct display input on the computer or console and confirm that the glasses are detected.
For ROG XREAL R1, the official connection guide specifies the ROG Control Dock for HDMI/DisplayPort sources, including desktop computers and consoles. Treat that as an R1-specific instruction, not a recommendation to use the Control Dock with unrelated glasses.
Connect Steam Deck and other handheld gaming PCs
Steam Deck, Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go are commonly used with glasses because their USB-C ports can provide video. The direct procedure is the same as for a laptop: verify DP Alt Mode, connect the glasses cable, and select the external-display settings if the handheld does not switch automatically.

Handhelds can lose battery faster while driving a large virtual screen. If you need to charge while playing, use a hub or dock that explicitly supports simultaneous charging and USB-C video for both the handheld and the glasses. Do not assume that a hub’s USB-C socket is a video output; many hubs reserve that socket for power input.
Refresh-rate choices are hardware-dependent. ROG XREAL R1 documentation notes that its 240 Hz mode varies with hardware, settings, and content, so a handheld may offer a lower rate even when the glasses are connected correctly.

- ROG XREAL R1: the guide routes Switch through the ROG Control Dock. Connect the Switch’s video source and power connections to the dock as specified, then connect the glasses to the dock.
- XREAL models covered by the xbx a01 guide: use the official XREAL Hub for Switch and Switch OLED.
- XREAL One Series: the guide describes using the Hub and an external power supply or power bank because of Switch USB-C voltage limits.
These instructions differ by product, which is why a generic HDMI adapter or an unpowered USB-C splitter is a poor substitute. Confirm whether your glasses require a hub, external charger, or power bank before attempting a Switch connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the host has no USB-C video
There are three practical alternatives:
- Use a model-approved HDMI-to-USB-C adapter. Choose one that names your glasses model or family and states its power requirements. Connect video, USB power/data, and external power exactly as shown in its guide.
- Use the manufacturer’s dock. A dock can combine HDMI or DisplayPort input, power, and the glasses output. This is the prescribed route for ROG XREAL R1 with HDMI/DisplayPort hosts.
- Use wireless projection when the product supports it. The Rokid Air guide describes a wireless-adapter route for devices that lack DP over USB-C but can project their screen over Wi-Fi. Wireless compatibility, latency, and power behavior are product-specific; do not assume every AR glasses model supports this method.
Passive USB-C-to-HDMI cables work in the opposite direction (USB-C source to HDMI display) and generally cannot convert an HDMI source into the USB-C video signal the glasses expect. An active, glasses-compatible adapter is required.
Power, charging, and battery impact
Many AR glasses do not contain a battery. The xbx a01 guide states that spatial large-screen use requires DP video output and 5 V/1 A power, and that the glasses receive power from the connected device. ROG XREAL R1 documentation likewise says the glasses have no built-in battery and are powered by the host or Control Dock. Direct use therefore reduces the phone, laptop, or handheld’s available runtime.
The actual battery impact depends on host hardware, screen brightness, content, and usage. There is no universal runtime figure. For a long session, use a compatible hub or dock that accepts a charger while passing DP video. On Switch, use the external power arrangement required by the glasses guide rather than connecting a high-power charger to an unsupported splitter.
Black-screen and no-audio troubleshooting
- Recheck video capability. Confirm that the exact host port supports DP Alt Mode or DisplayPort output. “USB-C” by itself is not evidence.
- Try the correct port. Move the cable to the port identified for display output; on desktops, use the graphics card output rather than a motherboard socket unless the processor and board support that output.
- Replace the cable. Use the supplied cable or a full-featured USB-C video cable. Charging-only cables can power the glasses without carrying an image.
- Validate the adapter or dock. For HDMI/DisplayPort, confirm that the adapter is intended for your glasses model and that it has the required USB and external-power connections.
- Reconnect in order. Turn on the host, attach external power, connect video, and then connect the glasses as the dock guide specifies. Some adapters negotiate the display signal only during startup.
- Check operating-system display settings. Select Duplicate or Extend on Windows, arrange the display in macOS, and verify that the handheld has not disabled its external output.
- Test without extra hubs. Remove unrelated USB-C hubs and extension cables. A direct connection isolates whether the problem is the host, cable, or glasses.
- Check audio separately. If video works but sound does not, select the glasses or external-display audio device in the host’s sound settings and raise both host and glasses volume.
For ROG XREAL R1, the official troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking DP Alt Mode and using the Control Dock when USB-C video is unavailable.
Choosing the right connection route
| Your host output | Best first choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C with DP Alt Mode | Supplied glasses cable | Simple and low-latency, but uses host power and requires the correct port |
| Thunderbolt 4 with display support | Supplied USB-C cable | Direct connection is possible on supported computers; capabilities still depend on the computer |
| HDMI or DisplayPort only | Glasses-specific active adapter or dock | More cables and often external power; compatibility must be verified |
| Switch or Switch OLED | Model-specific hub or dock | Required power handling differs by glasses model |
| No DP Alt Mode but Wi-Fi projection | Supported wireless adapter route | May add latency and requires a compatible wireless setup |
Before you buy an adapter or replacement cable
- Write down the exact glasses model, host model, and host output type.
- Confirm DP Alt Mode on the source, or identify whether the source is HDMI/DisplayPort.
- Check the glasses maker’s compatibility guide for that combination, including Switch instructions if relevant.
- For a cable, look for explicit DisplayPort/video-transmission support, not merely “fast charging.”
- For an adapter, verify signal direction, required USB power, external-power input, supported resolution and refresh rate, and model compatibility.
- If simultaneous charging matters, confirm that the hub supports charging and video at the same time; many USB-C hubs do not.
Bottom line
Start with a direct USB-C connection only after confirming DP Alt Mode on the host. Use the included video cable, not a charging-only replacement. For HDMI or DisplayPort sources, use the glasses maker’s specified active adapter or dock and connect every required power lead. Switch, iPhone, Android, and handheld compatibility varies by model, so the exact glasses guide and host specification are more reliable than the connector’s appearance or a generic accessory listing.
