How to Connect and Set Up the 8BitDo Retro 87 Xbox Edition Keyboard

The “Xbox Keyboard” is the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. It is officially licensed and listed by 8BitDo for Windows and Android, but not for Xbox consoles. For the exact keyboard-side connection sequence, use the owner’s manual linked on the official product support page; the support-page text does not publish the button presses or selector positions, so they should not be guessed.

Confirm which keyboard you have

8BitDo’s product name is easy to misread. The relevant model is the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, not a keyboard that 8BitDo says can operate an Xbox console. The “Xbox Edition” designation identifies the licensed Xbox-themed version. The manufacturer’s compatibility information lists Windows and Android as supported hosts, while its FAQ answers the question “Can I use it on the XBOX consoles?” with “No.”

Host or use What 8BitDo’s published information establishes
Windows PC Supported
Android device Supported
Xbox console Not supported according to the product FAQ
Bluetooth device count One connected device at a time; pairing is required again when changing devices
Top 3.5 mm ports For 8BitDo keyboard extensions, not headphones or microphones

If you bought the keyboard specifically for console gameplay, stop before troubleshooting Bluetooth: the published FAQ does not describe Xbox-console compatibility. A Windows PC or Android device is the supported setup described by the manufacturer.

Prepare before pairing

Do these checks before opening Bluetooth settings. They prevent you from treating a host-side problem as a keyboard fault.

  • 【Ultimate Software V2 on PC】Effortlessly configure your programmable keys. Switch key mappings on the fly and take advantage of powerful macro functions for a personalized performance.
  • Read the model label or packaging and confirm that it says Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
  • Use a Windows computer or Android device for the initial setup. Those are the hosts listed by 8BitDo.
  • Keep the keyboard close to the host while pairing and disconnect other keyboards if you need to avoid selecting the wrong device.
  • Have the owner’s manual available. The manual linked from the product support page is the authority for powering the keyboard, choosing its connection mode, entering pairing mode, and confirming a connection.
  • If you intend to use a top-mounted 3.5 mm socket, identify the 8BitDo keyboard extension first. These sockets are not audio inputs or outputs.

The support page is the safest starting point because firmware and documentation links can change: 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition support and FAQ.

Find the exact connection sequence in the manual

The support-page description confirms that an owner’s manual contains the connection and setup instructions, but it does not reproduce the required button presses or selector positions. Because an incorrect sequence can put the keyboard in the wrong mode or make it appear undiscoverable, do not rely on an inferred shortcut from another 8BitDo model.

  1. Open the product support page linked above.
  2. Choose the owner’s-manual link for the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
  3. In the manual, locate the diagram or section covering power, connection mode, and Bluetooth pairing.
  4. Follow the labeled control sequence exactly as printed, including any wait time or indicator-light behavior.
  5. Only after the keyboard is placed in pairing mode should you select it from Windows or Android Bluetooth settings.

This division of responsibility matters: the manual tells the keyboard which mode to use, while the operating system completes discovery and pairing. If the device does not appear, repeat the manual’s pairing procedure rather than trying random key combinations.

Connect it to Windows

Pair from Windows Settings

Once the manual has placed the keyboard in Bluetooth pairing mode, use the normal Windows Bluetooth workflow:

Rank #2

  • 8BITDO RETRO 87-KEY WIRELESS RGB MECHANICAL GAMING KEYBOARD - XBOX EDITION
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
  4. Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and wait for Windows to scan.
  5. Select the 8BitDo keyboard entry when it appears.
  6. Accept any pairing confirmation shown by Windows and wait for the status to change to connected.

Open a text field such as Notepad and type a short test sentence. This confirms that the keyboard is not merely listed as paired but is actually delivering input. If Windows displays a code, follow the on-screen instruction and the matching instruction in the manual; do not substitute a code from a different keyboard model.

If Windows does not list the keyboard

  • Return to the manual and repeat the keyboard-side pairing sequence. A keyboard that is powered on but not in discoverable mode will not appear in the scan.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on in Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then run Add device again.
  • Move the keyboard closer to the computer and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones or tablets that might already be trying to reconnect.
  • If an old 8BitDo entry is present, remove it from the Windows Bluetooth device list and pair again. This is especially useful after changing hosts because the keyboard allows one connected Bluetooth device at a time.

Connect it to Android

Pair from Android Settings

Android menu names vary slightly by manufacturer, but the operation is the same. Put the keyboard into Bluetooth pairing mode using the owner’s manual, then:

  1. Open Settings and enter Connected devices, Connections, or the phone’s equivalent Bluetooth page.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on and choose Pair new device or Scan for devices.
  3. Tap the 8BitDo keyboard when it appears under available devices.
  4. Approve the pairing request. If Android asks you to confirm a code or type one on the keyboard, use the exact prompt and manual instructions.
  5. Open a notes app and type a test line to verify input.

If the keyboard is visible but tapping it fails, cancel the request, remove any previous 8BitDo keyboard entry from Android’s saved devices, and repeat the manual’s pairing sequence. Keep other Bluetooth hosts out of range or temporarily disable their Bluetooth radios while you perform the new pairing.

Understand Bluetooth device switching

The product FAQ states that Bluetooth can connect to one device at a time. It does not describe simultaneous connections to several computers or a multi-host shortcut. When you move the keyboard from one Windows PC or Android device to another, pairing is required again.

  • RGB Backlight with 8 Lighting Modes

Switch from one host to another

  1. On the currently connected host, open its Bluetooth settings and disconnect or remove the keyboard entry.
  2. Use the owner’s manual to place the keyboard into the documented pairing mode.
  3. On the new Windows or Android host, start a fresh Bluetooth scan.
  4. Select the keyboard and complete the operating-system pairing prompt.

Do not assume that a keyboard shown as “saved” on a second device is already connected. The FAQ’s one-device limit means that the new host must complete its own pairing process when you change devices.

Fix the Windows 11 lighting conflict

8BitDo documents a specific remedy for a Windows 11 lighting problem. If the keyboard’s lighting behaves incorrectly or Windows keeps taking control of it, make both changes below:

  1. Open Ultimate Software V2 and set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB.
  2. In Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
  3. Turn off Dynamic Lighting.
  4. On the same Windows page, turn off the option that allows foreground-compatible applications to control lighting.

Restart the software or reconnect the keyboard after changing those settings. The remedy is specifically documented for Windows 11; do not assume that another Windows release exposes identical labels. If the setting is absent, use the wording shown by your installed Windows version and keep the 8BitDo RGB mode selected in Ultimate Software V2.

Use the top 3.5 mm ports correctly

The four 3.5 mm ports along the top edge are expansion connectors for 8BitDo keyboard extensions. They are not standard headphone jacks, microphone inputs, or general-purpose audio ports. Plugging an audio accessory into them will not turn the keyboard into an audio hub and may leave the accessory nonfunctional.

  • Triple-Mode Connectivity - Supports Bluetooth, 2.4G wireless, and wired USB-C connections. Compatible with Windows 10 (version 1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
  • N-Key Rollover & Programmable Buttons - Supports n-key rollover for accurate input during fast typing and gaming. Includes programmable buttons, function shortcut keys, and Fn lock.
  • Dual Super Buttons with Fast Mapping - The specially designed 8BitDo Dual Super Buttons offer large, programmable keys. Assign macros or other functions instantly—no software required.

Use only an extension intended for this keyboard family and follow its own installation instructions. If your goal is headphones or a microphone, connect those to the computer or Android device, not to the keyboard’s extension sockets.

Update firmware when a newer listing is available

The 8BitDo support index displayed firmware v1.07 for the Xbox keyboard, with notes about optimizing volume-knob performance and input accuracy. That version number is a support-index listing, not a promise that v1.07 remains the newest release. Check the current entry before updating: 8BitDo support index.

Safe firmware-check routine

  1. Open the support index and locate the entry for the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
  2. Compare the version shown there with the version reported by the official update utility or the keyboard documentation.
  3. Read the release notes so you know whether the update addresses your issue, such as volume-knob behavior or input accuracy.
  4. Follow 8BitDo’s current updater instructions exactly. Do not use a file intended for another Retro 87 variant or another keyboard.
  5. Keep the keyboard connected and powered as instructed until the utility reports completion; interrupting an update can create a separate recovery problem.

If your keyboard is functioning normally and the support index shows no newer firmware, there is no need to invent an update procedure. Firmware availability and instructions can change, so the live support index is the authoritative place to check.

Customize switches and keycaps within the stated limits

The FAQ says the keyboard supports third-party three-pin or five-pin switches and third-party OEM-profile keycaps. That is a category-level compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every switch or keycap sold in those categories will fit or feel correct.

  • For switches, verify that the replacement is a three-pin or five-pin design and check its physical dimensions, mounting style, and electrical compatibility before installation.
  • For keycaps, choose the OEM profile specified by 8BitDo and verify stem and row compatibility. A different profile can alter height, spacing, or key feel even if it appears to mount.
  • Disconnect the keyboard and follow a proper switch or keycap installation procedure. Do not force a part that resists removal.

8BitDo does not establish universal compatibility with every third-party component, so treat these limits as the boundary of what the FAQ supports.

Troubleshoot by symptom

“It powers on, but nothing types”

  • Check that the keyboard-side mode and pairing sequence were completed from the owner’s manual.
  • Confirm that Windows or Android shows the keyboard as connected, not merely remembered.
  • Test in a plain text field and verify that another Bluetooth keyboard is not receiving the input.
  • Remove the saved keyboard entry and pair again if you recently changed hosts.

“It worked on my PC, then disappeared from my phone”

This is consistent with the one-device Bluetooth limit. Disconnect the PC, repeat the manual’s pairing sequence, and pair the Android device again. A saved entry on the phone does not bypass the requirement to pair when switching devices.

“The lighting is wrong only on Windows 11”

Set Ultimate Software V2 to 8BitDo RGB, then disable Windows Dynamic Lighting and the foreground-compatible-app control option under Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. Those are the manufacturer’s documented settings changes for this conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The accessory plugged into the top port does not work”

Confirm that it is an 8BitDo keyboard extension. The four 3.5 mm sockets are not audio jacks, so headphones and microphones are not supported through them.

“I need to use it on an Xbox console”

The product FAQ’s answer is “No.” Use a supported Windows or Android host instead; changing Bluetooth settings cannot add Xbox-console support that the manufacturer does not claim.

Final setup checklist

  • Model confirmed as the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
  • Host is Windows or Android, not an Xbox console.
  • Owner’s manual opened from the official product support page.
  • Keyboard-side power, mode, and pairing sequence followed exactly as documented.
  • Windows or Android Bluetooth pairing completed and typing tested in a text field.
  • When changing hosts, old Bluetooth connection removed or disconnected and pairing repeated.
  • For Windows 11 lighting issues, 8BitDo RGB selected and both Dynamic Lighting controls disabled.
  • Top ports reserved for 8BitDo keyboard extensions.
  • Only three-pin or five-pin switches and OEM-profile keycaps considered for customization.
  • Firmware checked against the current 8BitDo support index, rather than relying on an old version number.

Following those boundaries gives you a supported setup without confusing the Xbox branding with Xbox-console compatibility or guessing at undocumented keyboard controls.
