Connect the Xbox Series X to the monitor’s HDMI input with the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the console. Then choose a resolution and refresh rate in Settings > General > TV & display options that the monitor supports through that specific HDMI input.

Connect the console and select the monitor input

  1. Turn off the Xbox and monitor before connecting them.
  2. Connect the Xbox Series X HDMI port directly to an HDMI input on the monitor using the cable included with the console. Xbox recommends using the supplied cable and connecting directly where possible. Xbox’s Series X specifications list the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  3. Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used, then turn on the Xbox.
  4. On the Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options. Choose a resolution and refresh rate available for the monitor’s HDMI input. Xbox Support’s TV and display guidance identifies this area for display settings.

Why 120 Hz or 4K may not be available

Xbox Series X has one HDMI 2.1 port and supports up to 4K and up to 120 FPS, but those are console capabilities—not a guarantee that a particular monitor can display every mode. Xbox specifies that 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a capable display. Xbox Series X product specifications

Check the monitor manual’s mode table for the exact HDMI input you are using. Some displays support 120 Hz only at certain resolutions or on selected HDMI inputs; a monitor may offer a desired mode only through DisplayPort. Xbox Wire notes that Series X can display 4K over HDMI, while its most advanced features require HDMI 2.1. Xbox Wire’s Series X technical overview

An HDMI 2.1 cable by itself cannot make a monitor support 4K at 120 Hz. The console, cable, monitor input, and game or other content must all support the selected mode. If the desired option is absent from Xbox’s display settings, use a mode supported by the monitor over the HDMI input connected to the console.

If there is no picture

  • Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
  • Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
  • For troubleshooting, connect the Xbox directly to the monitor rather than routing the signal through another device.

Check audio separately

HDMI connects the video signal, but sound depends on the monitor and the rest of your audio setup. Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers or an audio output, and choose an audio route supported by your equipment; there is no single audio configuration that applies to every monitor.

What to check when choosing a monitor

  • Supported resolution and refresh rate over HDMI, including whether the monitor can deliver the combination you want at the same time.
  • Which HDMI input supports those modes and whether the monitor requires a particular display setting.
  • Built-in speakers or audio outputs, if you want sound without separate audio equipment.

Use the manual for the exact monitor model: a headline refresh-rate figure does not establish which resolutions or inputs support that rate. If your monitor has DisplayPort but no compatible HDMI mode, do not assume the Xbox can connect directly to DisplayPort; the sources here do not establish a universal adapter solution.
