If both the soundbar and Roku TV have HDMI ports labeled ARC or eARC, use that connection. If not, use optical only if the TV has an optical output and the soundbar has an optical input. The right setup depends on the connections and features of both devices, as Roku Support explains in its connection guidance.
Choose the connection that matches both devices
| Connection | What you need | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | An ARC or eARC port on both the Roku TV and soundbar, plus an HDMI cable | Usually the best choice when available. ARC carries TV audio over HDMI; CEC can also enable shared control features. eARC features require eARC on both devices and a High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet. |
| Optical | A digital optical/S/PDIF output on the TV, an optical input on the soundbar, and a TOSLINK cable | A wired alternative when matching optical ports are present. Roku says Dolby Digital Plus is not available over optical S/PDIF. |
A standard HDMI port is not a substitute for a port labeled ARC or eARC. Likewise, do not assume a particular onn. soundbar has HDMI, optical, AUX, Bluetooth, or Roku TV Ready support based on the brand alone; check its rear panel and manual.

Connect with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Find the matching ports. Locate the Roku TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC and the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. If either device lacks the matching port, use another connection method.
- Connect the devices. Run one HDMI cable from the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. For eARC features, Roku specifies a High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, and both devices must support eARC.
- Enable ARC and CEC on the TV. On the Roku TV, open Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC). Enable ARC and System audio control. Roku also describes enabling 1-touch play in this CEC area.
- Choose an audio format. Open Settings > System > Audio > S/PDIF and ARC and start with Auto detect. If the soundbar cannot play the detected format, choose a format it supports; PCM-Stereo or Stereo is a useful basic compatibility option.
- Test the audio. Play something from a Roku channel. If possible, test another TV source too. ARC carries the TV’s audio over HDMI, while CEC lets compatible devices exchange control commands.
Connect with an optical cable
- Check both ends. Confirm the TV has a digital optical/S/PDIF output and the soundbar has an optical input. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input with a TOSLINK cable.
- Remove cable caps, if present. Take off any protective caps at the cable ends before inserting them. Roku warns that leaving them on can cause a faulty connection or damage the cable or optical port.
- Set the TV output. Where the setting is available, open Settings > Audio > Audio output > Optical.
- Select the soundbar input. Use the soundbar’s source control or remote to choose its optical input. Input names and controls vary by model, so consult the manual for your unit.
- Try PCM if there is no sound. If the format is unsupported or the connection is silent, set the TV’s output format to PCM or Stereo if available.
The manual for onn. soundbar model 100002635 describes optical and AUX inputs and lists an optical cable in the package. Those details apply to that model, not necessarily to other onn. soundbars.

- Check the physical connection first. For HDMI, unplug and firmly reconnect both ends, making sure the TV end is in its ARC/eARC port. For optical, confirm both devices have the required optical ports and that the cable is fully connected.
- Confirm the active soundbar source. The soundbar must be set to the input you connected—ARC/HDMI or optical, as applicable.
- Check Roku’s ARC and CEC settings. For HDMI ARC, verify that ARC and System audio control are enabled under Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).
- Try a compatible audio format. Start with Auto detect under Settings > System > Audio > S/PDIF and ARC. If the soundbar remains silent, try PCM-Stereo or Stereo.
- Restart both devices. Unplug the Roku TV and soundbar from power for a few moments, reconnect them, and test again.
- Verify the exact soundbar model. Look for the model number on the rear or bottom label, packaging, or manual. Port layouts and source controls differ; the 100002635 manual is not evidence of the port configuration on every onn. soundbar.
Roku’s soundbar troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the connection and audio-format compatibility when a Roku TV has no sound.

What ARC, eARC, and optical mean for setup
ARC and eARC are audio-return features carried over a TV’s HDMI connection. Use the ports specifically labeled ARC or eARC; plugging into an ordinary HDMI port will not provide ARC audio. eARC is available only on select Roku TV models, and its enhanced features work only when the soundbar also supports eARC and the cable meets Roku’s stated High Speed HDMI with Ethernet requirement.
Optical avoids the ARC/CEC setup path and works when the TV has optical output and the soundbar has optical input. It does not provide the same shared-control connection as HDMI ARC/CEC, and Roku says Dolby Digital Plus is not available through optical S/PDIF. Choose based on the ports and audio or control features you need, not simply on the onn. name.
