For a stock Atari 800XL, the simplest connection is its monitor port and an Atari-compatible monitor cable: a 5-pin DIN plug at the computer end, with separate RCA plugs for composite video and mono audio. Connect the video plug to a display’s composite input. If the display has HDMI but no composite input, add a composite-to-HDMI converter. Check your computer’s regional video standard and connector before buying a cable or converter; stock 800XLs generally do not output color S-Video from the monitor port.
What you need to check first
- The computer’s monitor connector: Most documented 800XL setups use a 5-pin DIN monitor jack. SECAM machines and unusual regional variants may differ, so inspect the actual connector rather than relying only on the model name.
- The video standard: 800XL versions include NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. The TV or converter must accept the computer’s standard; a physically matching plug does not guarantee a compatible picture.
- The display’s inputs: Look for composite video, an analog TV tuner for the RF route, or HDMI for use with a converter.
- The cable wiring: Choose a cable intended for the Atari 800XL monitor port. DIN plugs can look alike while being wired differently.
Connect to a display with composite input
- Turn off the computer and display while making the connections.
- Insert the Atari-compatible DIN-to-RCA monitor cable into the 800XL’s monitor jack.
- Connect the cable’s composite-video RCA plug to the display’s composite video input. Connect its mono-audio plug to the display’s audio input if you want sound through the display.
- Turn on the display and select the corresponding AV or composite input, then turn on the Atari.
The 800XL service manual describes composite video and audio at the monitor jack. A typical color monitor cable carries these as separate RCA connections. If your display has a combined composite input, use the video connection as indicated by the display’s labeling; input layouts vary.

If the display has no usable audio input
Route the cable’s mono-audio lead to a suitable audio input or powered speakers. The audio output is mono, not stereo. Some displays do not route sound from a composite input in the way you expect, so check the input labeling and audio settings.

Connect to an HDMI-only TV or monitor
The 800XL produces analog video, so an HDMI-only display needs a composite-to-HDMI converter or upscaler. The conversion device must accept the Atari’s regional video standard; compatibility and picture quality vary, and no particular converter model is established here as tested or guaranteed.

- Connect the Atari-compatible monitor cable to the computer.
- Connect the cable’s composite-video and audio leads to the converter’s matching inputs.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV or monitor, and provide any power the converter requires.
- Select the HDMI input used by the converter. If there is no picture, check the converter’s supported input standards and any format-selection controls.
Other connection options
RF input
An RF television connection may be available depending on the machine and setup. It is useful only if the TV has a compatible analog tuner and supports the computer’s broadcast standard. Many current displays do not have an appropriate tuner, so do not assume an RF connector alone will make the Atari work. When composite is available, the monitor-port cable is the more direct route.
Monochrome picture from luminance
The monitor jack also carries luminance, often labeled Y in technical descriptions. A compatible monochrome input can use this for a black-and-white picture. Luminance alone is not color composite and does not provide the chroma needed for color S-Video.

S-Video after a hardware modification
The stock 800XL generally does not route chroma to its monitor jack, so a cable sold as S-Video cannot by itself produce color S-Video from an unmodified machine. Atari Projects documents a hardware modification that connects chroma circuitry to the jack. This involves work inside the computer; it is not a plug-in cable solution. The guide also describes an optional component change that can remove composite video. Use a guide specific to the board revision or consult a qualified repairer before making changes, particularly if you want to retain composite output.
Regional connector and signal cautions
NTSC, PAL, and SECAM versions exist. Technical references describe common 5-pin DIN PAL and 6-pin DIN SECAM monitor connectors, while the Atari service manual describes a 5-pin jack for the documented model. If your machine has an unexpected pin count or is a French-market unit, identify its exact variant before ordering a cable. Do not assume a generic SCART or RGB lead will work: the 800XL is not an RGB computer by default, and compatibility depends on the particular machine and adapter.

If you get no picture or sound
- No picture: Confirm the TV is on the correct input, the composite plug is in the video input rather than an audio jack, and the cable is wired for the Atari monitor port.
- Picture appears unstable or absent through HDMI: Check whether the converter accepts the Atari’s NTSC, PAL, or SECAM signal. A converter that accepts one standard may not accept another.
- Picture but no sound: Connect the separate mono-audio lead to an audio input or powered speakers, and verify that the display routes audio from the selected input.
- Black-and-white picture: Verify that you connected composite video rather than luminance-only output. Stock color S-Video should not be expected from the monitor jack without a chroma modification.
