How to Connect an Antenna to Your TV Using Coax or Existing Aerial Cable

Connect the antenna’s coaxial output to the TV’s antenna input, select the TV’s antenna or broadcast tuner mode, and run a channel scan. If you want to use existing cable or satellite wiring, first confirm that it forms a connected path to the TV; splitters and other legacy components can weaken or block reception.

Connect one antenna to one TV

  1. Check the connections. Find the antenna’s coaxial output and the TV’s input labelled Antenna, ANT IN, or RF IN. Antennas Direct describes its antenna connectors as female F-type and says they work with standard RG6 coaxial cable; check your equipment’s labels and instructions to confirm compatibility. Antennas Direct’s installation guidance notes that a coaxial cable may need to be purchased separately.
  2. Attach the coaxial cable. Connect one end to the antenna and the other to the TV’s antenna input. Tighten the fittings securely without forcing them. If you do not already have a suitable lead, RG6 coaxial cable with compatible F-type connectors is a suitable match for the cited Antennas Direct equipment.
  3. Set up the TV tuner. In the TV’s channel or tuner setup, choose Antenna, Air, or Broadcast if offered, then run the channel scan. Menu wording varies by TV. A scan finds channels available to the tuner at that time and location; repeat it after moving or aiming the antenna.
  4. Test before permanent installation. Temporarily place the antenna where you intend to use it and scan for channels before mounting it permanently. If the TV has no suitable antenna input or tuner, connect the antenna to a compatible converter box, then connect the box to the TV as its instructions specify.

Can you reuse cable or satellite wiring in the home?

Often, but not automatically. Existing coaxial cable may carry an antenna signal if the antenna feed connects through the home’s wiring to the outlet serving the TV. A wall outlet is not proof that its cable reaches the antenna or joins the same distribution network as other outlets. Older cable or satellite installations may also include splitters, diplexers, or other components that need inspection or removal. Antennas Direct’s antenna FAQs discuss existing coax and distribution setups.

  1. Connect the antenna directly to one TV first, if practical, and scan for channels.
  2. If that works, connect the antenna feed to the home’s coax network and test the intended TV outlet.
  3. Add or reconnect distribution components one at a time, scanning as needed. If reception worsens when a component is added, bypass it to identify the problem.

Look for loose fittings, corrosion, damaged cable, or a long run. If you cannot establish which cables and components connect the antenna to the TV, an installer can trace and assess the wiring.

Connecting an antenna to multiple TVs

A coaxial splitter can divide one antenna feed among several TVs, with a separate coaxial lead running from the splitter to each TV. The trade-off is that splitting can reduce the signal reaching each tuner. Start by checking reception on one TV with a direct connection. If it works there but not through the splitter, examine the splitter, connections, cable runs, and any other distribution components before considering amplification. Antennas Direct’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the signal path and connections.

A distribution amplifier may help address signal loss in a setup that already receives a signal, but it cannot create a signal the antenna is not receiving. Diagnose antenna placement and the distribution path first rather than assuming an amplifier is required.

When a UHF/VHF combiner is needed

A combiner is for a specific setup with separate UHF and VHF antennas: it accepts the two antenna feeds and combines them into one output for a TV or converter box. Antennas Direct’s combiner guidance and quick-start instructions describe that arrangement, including equal-length short coax leads from the antennas to the combiner. It is not needed for the ordinary connection of a single antenna to a TV.

If the TV does not find channels

  • Check the input: Make sure the cable runs from the antenna to the TV’s antenna or RF input, not an unrelated port.
  • Check tuner mode and scan: Select antenna, air, or broadcast mode where available, then run a fresh channel scan.
  • Bypass the home distribution: Connect directly to one TV to test whether a splitter or legacy cable or satellite component is causing trouble.
  • Inspect the cable path: Check fittings and cable for looseness, corrosion, damage, excessive length, or an outlet that is not connected to the antenna feed.
  • Adjust the antenna: Buildings, terrain, trees, and other obstacles affect reception. Try a different position or aim, then scan again; retest before fixing the antenna in place.
  • Consider amplification only after diagnosis: First confirm the antenna receives a signal and identify losses from long cable runs or distribution components.

Outdoor mounting and electrical safety

Keep the antenna and installation work clear of power lines. Roof and mast work can involve fall, wind, and structural hazards; use a qualified installer if the work is beyond your experience. For an outdoor installation, consider coax grounding and follow applicable local electrical codes. Antennas Direct advises consulting a professional electrician; grounding may protect equipment from voltage surges caused by nearby lightning, but it does not protect against a direct strike. See its outdoor antenna installation tips.
