To get free over-the-air channels on an LG Smart TV, connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the antenna input on the back of the set, then run Auto Tuning so the TV scans and saves the channels it receives. The exact menu labels depend on your model and webOS version, so the steps below show the general path and what to check when the labels differ.
Before you start
- An indoor or outdoor digital TV antenna with a coaxial cable that reaches the TV’s antenna input.
- Your TV’s model number, which you can find on the label on the back of the set or in Settings. It determines which menu layout and port labels apply to you.
- Confirmation that your location is covered by an over-the-air broadcast service. LG’s support guidance says the antenna can only receive signals that are actually broadcast where you live, so a scan cannot create channels that are not being transmitted to your address.
Connect the antenna cable
- Find the antenna input on the back of the TV. Look for a coaxial port labeled ANTENNA or ANTENNA/CABLE. If the set has two antenna inputs, check whether one is labeled UHD TV Antenna. LG’s regional support guide for Jordan says to use that port for a UHD antenna.
- Attach the coaxial cable. LG’s regional guide, published 9 July 2026, puts it this way: “Connect the antenna cable to the antenna input on the back of your TV.” If there is only one antenna input, connect to it directly.
- Connect through a wall outlet if your antenna uses one. In that case, run a coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the TV’s ANTENNA/CABLE jack. An older LG owner manual for one model family describes this connection; the jack location and cable type can vary by model.
- Tighten the connector by hand. A loose fitting is one of the most common reasons for a weak or empty scan, so make sure the cable is seated firmly at both ends.
Run Auto Tuning
Run the scan after the cable is connected, and run it again any time you change the antenna, the cable, or where the antenna sits. LG’s support guidance says to rerun Auto Tuning after antenna or cable connection changes.

Menu path on webOS 6.0 and later
- Press the Settings button on your remote, or open Settings from the home screen.
- Select All Settings.
- Select General, then Channels.
- Select Channel Tuning, then Auto Tuning.
- Select Start and wait for the scan to finish. The TV saves each channel it receives.
Older menu layouts
LG’s U.S. support article, published in 2025, lists older paths in which Channels appears directly under All Settings rather than under General. If your menu does not match the path above, look for the same three items wherever they appear: Channels, Channel Tuning, and Auto Tuning.

Placement and reception
LG recommends placing the antenna near a window to reduce interference from other electronics and building materials. Reception depends on your distance from broadcast towers, terrain, and obstructions, so an antenna that works well in one room may perform differently in another. Moving the antenna and rescanning is the simplest test.
If the scan finds no channels or the picture is unstable
No channels found
- Confirm the TV is scanning the antenna input, not an external source such as a cable box. The input selected for the scan has to be the one the antenna is connected to.
- Check that the cable is firmly attached at the TV and at the antenna or wall outlet.
- Move the antenna closer to a window and run Auto Tuning again.
Some channels appear, or the picture breaks up
- Inspect the antenna cable for kinks, cracks, or corrosion, and replace it if it is damaged.
- If your menu offers Manual Tuning, use it to view signal strength and signal quality for a channel. Compare readings after each change in antenna position.
- Rerun Auto Tuning after every adjustment so the TV updates its channel list.
Menu labels do not match these steps
Find the exact instructions for your model and webOS version in LG’s support material or the owner manual. LG’s guidance is written for all models, so model-specific labels take priority.

Using a set-top box or external receiver
The steps above describe an antenna connected directly to the TV. The LG guidance I reviewed does not establish a single workflow for every external receiver, so check that device’s own manual before adjusting the TV’s tuning settings.
What the scan can and cannot promise
Auto Tuning saves the channels the TV receives at your location. It cannot guarantee a particular channel count, UHD availability, or picture quality, since those depend on which stations broadcast in your area, what signal they transmit, and how well your antenna picks it up.
