To connect a robot to an Android phone, install the robot maker’s exact app, put the robot into its documented pairing or configuration mode, grant the permissions that app requests, and follow its discovery and Wi‑Fi steps. There is no universal button combination or network requirement: some robots use Bluetooth first, some broadcast a temporary Wi‑Fi network, and others are configured entirely through the app.
Identify the precise model before troubleshooting. Its manual determines the app, account or region requirements, pairing buttons, indicator lights, supported Wi‑Fi bands, and recovery procedure. The examples below show how major setup patterns work without treating one brand’s instructions as interchangeable with another’s.

What you need before pairing
- The exact robot model and region: Check the label, manual, or manufacturer support page. A similarly named model may use a different app or button sequence.
- The official Android app: Install the app named in the manual from Google Play. Do not substitute a generic smart-home app unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it.
- A powered robot: Charge it as directed and switch it on. Many apps cannot discover a robot that is docked incorrectly, switched off, or not fully booted.
- Your account and region: Some apps require registration and a selected country or service region before adding a device.
- Your home Wi‑Fi details: Have the network name and password ready, but first verify the model’s supported bands and network restrictions.
- A nearby Android phone: Keep the phone close to the robot and the router during setup. Discovery and temporary-network handoffs are less reliable at a distance.
Do not buy a router, extender, replacement battery, or Bluetooth adapter as a first step. The setup instructions cited here describe model-specific checks and do not establish any accessory as universally necessary.

Manufacturers use several connection designs. The first connection may use Bluetooth discovery, a temporary Wi‑Fi network emitted by the robot, a QR-code workflow, or an app-led process that sends home-network credentials while the robot is in configuration mode. The phone may use more than one of these in sequence.

| Example | Initial discovery or setup method | Network and permission details documented by the manufacturer | Success or recovery indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECOVACS robot (cited setup) | The app can guide the phone to a temporary network whose name begins with “ECOVACS”; a QR-code and network-configuration flow is also documented. | The cited device supports 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, not 5 GHz or enterprise networks. Android may need to join the robot network manually from Wi‑Fi settings and then return to the app. | Follow the app’s completed configuration state and the robot’s documented indicator. |
| TP-Link Tapo robot instructions | Model-specific controls place the robot in configuration mode, then the Tapo app completes setup. | The troubleshooting page advises turning off mobile data and temporarily disabling VPN or VPN-based security software during its setup flow. | Move the robot nearer the router during setup if signal is weak; restart the app or phone if discovery fails. |
| Mi Robot Vacuum with Xiaomi Home | Hold the model’s Power and Recharge controls until the blue indicator flashes, then add the device in Xiaomi Home. | Select the home Wi‑Fi and enter its password as prompted; exact compatibility still depends on the model. | The app’s device state and the robot’s blue indicator show progress. |
| Roborock cleaner | Install the Roborock app, select a region, register or sign in, then add the cleaner and follow its pairing prompts. | The cited Android instructions request location permission during setup and ask you to select the home Wi‑Fi and enter its password. | Open the device in the app and wait for initialization to reach 100%. |
| Maytronics robot | The Maytronics app discovers the robot and guides first-time connection; a separate troubleshooting flow handles a stuck or failed connection. | Use the app’s requested permissions and the network supported by the specific model. | Named robots use a documented connectivity LED; if loading stalls, the support flow says to go back, select the robot again, and continue. |
| Vorwerk Kobold VR7 | The app uses Bluetooth and nearby-phone discovery before completing network setup. | Vorwerk lists Bluetooth and location access for pairing. | A blinking or steady WLAN indicator communicates the connection stage. |
These are examples, not a universal compatibility chart. Use the instructions for your own model when they conflict with an example above.
Step-by-step: connect an Android phone to a robot
1. Confirm the app, model and service region
- Read the model number from the robot, dock, or manual.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model and note the required Android app, account, country or region, and minimum software requirements.
- Install the app from Google Play and update it before beginning.
- Sign in or create the required account. Roborock’s Android guide, for example, starts with installing its Google Play app, choosing a region, and registering before adding the cleaner. See the Roborock Android setup instructions.
2. Prepare the robot exactly as its manual says
Place the robot on its dock or in the position specified for setup, connect power, and wait for it to start. Then use only the documented pairing controls. For a Tapo model, the cited instructions use a model-specific power-on sequence and a Dock plus Spot Cleaning button combination to enter configuration mode. For the cited Mi Robot Vacuum procedure, hold Power and Recharge until the blue indicator flashes. Those combinations are examples, not safe substitutes for another model.
Listen for a voice prompt or watch the indicator described in the manual. If the robot does not confirm configuration mode, the app may never find it even when Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are working.

- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth if the app’s instructions call for them.
- Accept the app’s permission prompts while pairing. Do not deny a prompt and assume the app can recover automatically.
- If Android later shows the permission as denied, open Settings > Apps > [the robot app] > Permissions and enable the requested access, then return to the app.
Permission names vary by Android release and by the APIs used by the app. Android 12 and later introduced runtime Nearby devices permissions for Bluetooth operations. Android Developers states: “The BLUETOOTH_ADVERTISE, BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, and BLUETOOTH_SCAN permissions are runtime permissions.” See the Bluetooth permissions documentation.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
For apps targeting Android 13 (API level 33) or higher that manage nearby Wi‑Fi connections, Android Developers says: “Apps that target Android 13 (API level 33) or higher and manage Wi‑Fi connections should request the NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES runtime permission.” Details and API-specific exceptions are listed in the nearby Wi‑Fi permissions documentation.
Older apps and older Android versions may request location permission for Bluetooth scanning or particular Wi‑Fi APIs. That prompt reflects the operating system’s permission model; it is not by itself evidence that the robot is tracking your physical location. Android’s Companion Device Manager can perform a scan on an app’s behalf without location permission on Android 8.0 and later, but Location Services must be enabled and the manager does not establish the connection by itself. See Android’s companion-device pairing documentation.
4. Add the robot in the app
- Choose Add device, +, or the equivalent control in the manufacturer’s app.
- Select the exact model if the app displays a list.
- Keep the phone within a few feet of the robot during discovery.
- Follow the displayed method: Bluetooth discovery, QR-code scan, temporary robot Wi‑Fi, or direct configuration.
If the app asks you to join a temporary network, Android may leave your home Wi‑Fi briefly. Complete the handoff exactly as shown and return to the app instead of switching to another network.
5. Supply home-network credentials
- Select the home network the robot is allowed to use.
- Enter the Wi‑Fi password carefully; avoid relying on a copied password that may include an extra space.
- Check the model’s band and network restrictions before submitting. Do not assume that a 2.4 GHz-only rule applies to every robot.
- Leave the robot and phone where the signal is strong until setup finishes.
The cited ECOVACS initial-connection page specifies 2.4 GHz support and excludes 5 GHz and enterprise networks. This is a device-specific limitation, not a universal Android-to-robot rule. Its January 22, 2026 network connection guide describes scanning the robot QR code, entering Wi‑Fi credentials, triggering network setup, and maintaining strong coverage.

6. Wait for the documented completion state
Do not close the app as soon as the robot appears. Roborock’s cited Android flow says to open the device and wait for initialization to reach 100%. Other models show a steady or blinking WLAN indicator, a connectivity LED, or a voice announcement. Only move the robot or change networks after the app reports completion and the manual’s indicator confirms the final state.
Model-specific examples
ECOVACS: temporary network or QR-led setup
Use the ECOVACS initial robot connection instructions for the exact model. If Android does not automatically hand control back to the app, open Wi‑Fi settings, select the network beginning with “ECOVACS,” return to the app, and wait for configuration to finish. The cited device accepts 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi but not 5 GHz or enterprise networks. Ensure both phone and robot have strong coverage while credentials are transferred.
TP-Link Tapo: configuration mode and targeted interference checks
Follow the model’s power-on and Dock plus Spot Cleaning controls in the Tapo robot setup troubleshooting guide. During this particular setup flow, TP-Link recommends turning off mobile data and temporarily disabling a VPN or security product that uses a VPN. If the app still cannot discover the robot, close and reopen it, restart the phone, or try another phone or tablet. These are targeted Tapo checks, not requirements for every robot app.
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum: flashing blue indicator
The cited Xiaomi procedure places the vacuum in setup mode by holding Power and Recharge until the blue indicator flashes. Add it in Xiaomi Home, choose the home network, and enter the password. If your model uses different controls or an indicator color, use its manual rather than this example.

Roborock: account, region and initialization
In the Roborock Android guide, install the app, select a region, register, add the cleaner, grant the requested location access, select Wi‑Fi, and enter the password. After the device appears, open it and wait for initialization to reach 100% before treating setup as complete.
Maytronics: reconnecting after a loading screen
Use the Maytronics first-time connection instructions for the initial flow. If a cordless robot cannot connect, the Maytronics troubleshooting page advises going back, selecting the robot again, and continuing when the app is stuck loading. Follow the named model’s LED behavior rather than assuming another robot’s indicator pattern.
Vorwerk Kobold VR7: Bluetooth and WLAN indicators
The VR7 setup guide lists Bluetooth and location access for pairing. Keep the phone close, complete Bluetooth discovery, and watch for the documented blinking or steady WLAN indicator as the robot joins the network.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The app cannot find the robot
- Confirm the robot is switched on, adequately charged, and in its exact pairing or configuration mode. A powered robot that is not in that mode is not discoverable through the normal flow.
- Move the Android phone close to the robot and enable the radio the app requires, such as Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi.
- Review the app’s permissions in Android Settings. A denied Nearby devices, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, or location permission can stop discovery depending on Android version and app implementation.
- Check the account region and model selection. A region mismatch can hide a device or send you into the wrong setup wizard.
- If the app uses a temporary robot network, open Wi‑Fi settings and join it manually when the manufacturer directs you to do so. For the cited ECOVACS flow, choose the network beginning “ECOVACS,” then return to the app.
- Apply targeted interference checks only when the manufacturer recommends them. Tapo’s guide, for example, calls for mobile data and VPN-based security software to be disabled temporarily.
- Close and reopen the app, restart the phone, or try another Android phone or tablet if the manufacturer lists those steps.
The robot fails while joining home Wi‑Fi
- Re-enter the password and verify the selected network name.
- Check the manual for supported bands, encryption, hidden-network behavior, and enterprise-network exclusions. The cited ECOVACS device is 2.4 GHz-only and excludes enterprise networks; another model may differ.
- Move the robot nearer the router for setup, as TP-Link recommends for its Tapo flow, then return it to its normal location after connection.
- Ensure the robot remains powered and its configuration indicator or voice prompt is still active.
- If setup uses a temporary robot network, join that network as directed and return to the manufacturer’s app instead of choosing a different home network midway.
The app connects but initialization never finishes
- Keep the app open and wait for its documented completion state; Roborock specifies waiting until initialization reaches 100%.
- Check the robot’s WLAN or connectivity indicator for the state described in its manual.
- Use the app’s back-and-reselect recovery when the model documents it. Maytronics instructs users with a stuck loading screen to go back, select the robot again, and continue.
- Close and reopen the app and restart the phone if the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page recommends it.
- Do not perform a factory reset from another brand’s instructions. Reset controls erase configuration and differ by model.
The robot worked before but will not reconnect
- Confirm the phone is signed into the same account and service region used for the robot.
- Check whether the home router’s network name, password, band, or security settings changed.
- Power-cycle the robot according to its manual, then reopen the app and use its reconnect option.
- If the robot requires pairing mode again, repeat that model’s button sequence; a normal restart may not be enough.
- Reset only as a last resort and only with the model’s own instructions, because a reset can remove Wi‑Fi credentials and app ownership data.
When Android permissions look confusing
A location prompt during setup does not necessarily mean the robot receives your location. Older Android Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi APIs used location permission as a privacy safeguard around nearby-device scanning. Newer app targets can request Nearby devices and, for Android 13 or later Wi‑Fi management, NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES instead. The prompt you see depends on the Android release, the app’s target SDK, and the connection APIs selected by the manufacturer.
If the app refuses to continue after you granted permission, open its Android app-permission page, verify that the requested access is allowed, turn on Location Services if the app or Android version requires it, and restart the pairing flow. Do not grant unrelated permissions that the app does not request for setup.
What not to assume
- “Every robot needs 2.4 GHz.” Only apply a band restriction documented for your model. ECOVACS’s cited device has that limitation; the cited ECOVACS information does not establish it for all robots.
- “Bluetooth alone completes setup.” Bluetooth may only discover the robot before Wi‑Fi credentials are transferred.
- “A visible robot means setup is complete.” Initialization, cloud registration, or a final WLAN indicator may still be pending.
- “A reset is the universal fix.” Reset sequences and consequences are model-specific.
- “A new accessory will solve pairing.” No universal router, extender, battery, or adapter requirement is established for this topic.
When to contact manufacturer support
Contact the manufacturer with the exact model, Android version, app version, account region, error text, indicator color or voice prompt, and the step where setup stops. Also note whether the robot is visible in Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi settings, whether another phone behaves differently, and whether the router or password recently changed. Those details let support distinguish a permission problem, unsupported network, configuration-mode error, account issue, or hardware fault without asking you to repeat unrelated reset procedures.
