How to Connect an Android Phone to a Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse

You can use an Android phone with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, but only when the exact phone model supports external-display video. The usual wired setup is a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or an HDMI-capable USB-C hub, followed by Bluetooth or USB input devices. Depending on the phone, the monitor will either mirror the phone screen or open a separate desktop session such as Samsung DeX.

Check your phone before buying an adapter

External-display support is not a standard feature of every Android phone. Google Android Help states: “This feature isn’t available on all devices and the experience may vary.” A USB-C socket tells you the connector shape, not whether the phone can send a video signal.

Find the exact model and regional variant

Open the phone’s Settings page to identify its complete model name and number, then check the manufacturer’s current specifications or support documentation for that exact device. Look specifically for external-display, wired video output, desktop mode, or DeX support. Two phones that look similar can have different display capabilities, and support can differ by software version or region.

Confirm the software requirement

Some connected-display functions are delivered or expanded through Android or the manufacturer’s interface. Google’s Android Developers Blog describes connected-display support with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel and Samsung phones, but that announcement is not a complete cross-brand compatibility list. Check the current software requirement for your phone rather than assuming that an update alone will add video output.

Use this pre-purchase checklist

  • Video output: The phone explicitly supports sending video through its USB-C port or another documented display feature.
  • Operating-system support: The installed Android version and manufacturer interface meet the documented requirement.
  • Display connection: Your monitor or television has a compatible input, commonly HDMI.
  • Desktop feature: If you want a desktop session rather than a duplicate phone screen, the phone lists a supported desktop mode.
  • Peripheral connection: The phone, hub, or dock supports Bluetooth or USB input devices.

If the model documentation does not mention external video, an adapter cannot create that capability. Choose a different connection method only when the manufacturer documents it; do not rely on the USB-C shape alone.

Choose the connection layout

There are four practical hardware arrangements. Select one based on the phone’s documented support and how many cables or USB ports you need.

Arrangement What connects where Best fit Important limitation
Direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable Phone USB-C port to monitor or TV HDMI input A simple display connection with no USB peripherals Usually provides no additional USB ports; the phone must support video output
HDMI-capable USB-C hub or dock Phone to hub; hub HDMI to display; keyboard and mouse to the hub’s USB ports One connection point for a display and wired peripherals The phone must support video output and the hub must support the required display path
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse Each device pairs directly with the phone A cable-free desk and a setup with few available USB ports Both accessories must support Bluetooth pairing and remain charged
Wired USB keyboard and mouse Devices plug into a compatible hub, dock, or USB-OTG connection Existing USB accessories or a permanent desk setup A USB-A peripheral may require an OTG adapter; port and power compatibility matter
Wireless Samsung DeX Supported Galaxy phone connects to a compatible Samsung TV or Miracast-capable display A cable-free DeX session It is device- and display-specific and can experience stutter or lag

A hub is the most flexible option when you need HDMI and wired USB at the same time. A direct adapter is easier to troubleshoot when the only goal is displaying the phone. Bluetooth keeps the desk less crowded, while USB peripherals are convenient when a hub or dock is already in use.

Connect the phone to the monitor with a cable

  1. Prepare the display. Turn on the monitor or TV and identify the HDMI input you intend to use. If the monitor has several inputs, note the selected port.
  2. Connect the video path. For a direct setup, attach the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable to the phone and HDMI cable to the display. For a hub, connect the phone to the hub’s USB-C host port, then connect HDMI from the hub to the monitor.
  3. Connect optional USB devices. Plug a keyboard and mouse into the hub or dock’s USB ports. If the peripherals use USB-A and the phone has only USB-C, use a supported OTG adapter or a hub that provides the correct port.
  4. Select the correct monitor input. Use the monitor’s Input or Source control to choose the HDMI port carrying the phone signal.
  5. Unlock the phone if prompted. Some phones require an unlocked screen before allowing the external display session or asking which mode to use.
  6. Choose the display mode. A supported phone may begin by mirroring its screen, or it may offer a desktop mode. Open the notification shade or Quick Settings if the phone provides a display-mode choice; labels differ by manufacturer and Android version.
  7. Wait for the external session. The first connection can take a few seconds while the phone negotiates the display. Keep the cable firmly seated at both ends.
  8. Arrange the workspace. In desktop mode, open apps in separate windows and use the pointer and keyboard. In mirror mode, the monitor shows the same content as the phone, so app behavior remains phone-like.

Samsung’s documented wired method

For supported Samsung DeX devices, Samsung documents connecting a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable from the phone to an HDMI monitor or TV. A compatible hub or dock can provide HDMI plus USB ports for peripherals. Some devices mirror automatically; Samsung says you can select DeX from the notification or Quick Settings panel when that option is offered. The exact wording and sequence depend on the model and software.

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

  1. Charge the keyboard and mouse, then switch each one into its pairing or discovery mode according to its hardware controls.
  2. On the phone, open the Bluetooth settings page. Android settings names vary, but the control is normally under the main Settings menu or Connected devices.
  3. Select the keyboard when it appears and complete any pairing code shown on the phone or keyboard.
  4. Repeat the process for the mouse.
  5. Test text entry in a search box or note and move the pointer across the external display. If the pointer appears only on the phone, verify that the phone has entered its supported desktop or pointer mode.

Bluetooth avoids consuming the hub’s USB ports and is useful when the phone is connected directly to HDMI. It also means the accessories depend on their own batteries or charging schedules.

Connect a wired keyboard and mouse

Wired input works through a compatible USB-C hub or dock, or through a supported USB-OTG connection. Plug the peripherals into the hub before or after attaching the phone, then wait for Android to recognize them. Samsung notes that USB-A devices may need an OTG adapter when connecting to a USB-C phone.

When a hub is the practical choice

Use an HDMI-capable hub when the phone has one USB-C port and you need that port for video while also using USB accessories. Confirm that the hub’s HDMI output is intended for video, not merely charging or data. A hub can include a power-input port, but whether simultaneous charging is supported depends on the phone and the hub; check both manufacturers’ documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no mouse is available

On supported Samsung DeX setups, the phone screen can act as a touchpad. Android’s connected-display guidance also describes desktop-window interaction with a connected keyboard and trackpad on supported devices. The touchpad option is a fallback for navigation, not proof that every Android phone supports a desktop session.

Understand mirroring versus desktop mode

Behavior Mirrored display Desktop session
What appears on the monitor A copy of the phone’s current screen A separate workspace designed for windows and pointer input
Phone-screen relationship Actions on the phone are reflected on the monitor The phone can often remain available for other controls while the external session runs
Keyboard and mouse experience Depends on the phone and app; interaction may remain phone-oriented Designed for a pointer, keyboard shortcuts, and resizable windows where supported
Availability May be offered on more devices than desktop mode Requires a phone and software that explicitly support desktop mode

Android Help distinguishes mirrored mode from desktop mode, but the available choices depend on the device. If the monitor only duplicates the phone and no desktop option appears, that may be the phone’s supported behavior rather than a cable fault.

Samsung DeX: what is and is not supported

Samsung DeX is one manufacturer-specific route for using a Galaxy phone on an external display. Samsung publishes a supported model-family list and excludes the Z Flip series from external-display DeX. Check that list for the exact phone instead of treating DeX instructions as general Android instructions.

Do not confuse DeX for PC with monitor-based DeX

Samsung separately states that DeX for PC is unsupported on phones running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. That restriction concerns using DeX through a computer. It does not automatically mean that a supported phone cannot run DeX directly on a monitor or TV. Verify the documentation for the standalone external-display mode you intend to use.

Wireless DeX requirements

Wireless DeX requires a supported Samsung phone and a supported Samsung TV or a Miracast-capable display. Keep the phone and display close enough to maintain a stable wireless link; Samsung warns that distance can contribute to stutter or lag. Wireless DeX is not a universal Android feature and is not interchangeable with ordinary Bluetooth display output.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing input

No picture at all

  1. Reconfirm that the exact phone model supports external video output.
  2. Check that the adapter or hub is designed to carry HDMI video, not only USB data or charging.
  3. Make sure the HDMI cable is fully inserted into the adapter or hub and monitor.
  4. Use the monitor’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port you actually connected.
  5. Unlock the phone and look for a display-mode prompt or notification.
  6. Disconnect nonessential USB devices and test the display with only the phone and HDMI path attached.

If the manufacturer’s setup instructions require a particular adapter, cable, or software version, follow those requirements; there is no single adapter specification or universal Android menu path established for every model.

The monitor mirrors the phone but no desktop appears

Mirroring may be the only supported external-display behavior. Check the phone’s documentation for a desktop mode and look in the display notification or Quick Settings for a mode selector. If no desktop option is documented, use the monitor as a larger mirrored screen rather than expecting DeX-style windows.

The keyboard or mouse is not detected

  • For Bluetooth devices, return each accessory to pairing mode, remove an old pairing if necessary, and pair it again from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
  • For USB devices, reseat the hub, try one peripheral at a time, and confirm that the phone or hub supports the required USB-OTG connection.
  • Check whether a USB-A accessory needs a USB-C OTG adapter.
  • If a pointer is absent in mirror mode, determine whether the phone supports pointer input only in its desktop session.

Wireless DeX stutters or disconnects

Confirm that the display is a supported Samsung TV or Miracast-capable monitor, keep the phone close to the display, and reduce nearby wireless obstacles where practical. If reliable input is more important than eliminating cables, use the documented wired HDMI method instead.

DeX does not return after unplugging

Samsung says unplugging HDMI restarts DeX. Save work before disconnecting, then reconnect the HDMI path and wait for the phone to offer the display mode again.

Pick the setup that matches your goal

For occasional screen sharing

Use a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable if the phone supports video output. This minimizes extra hardware and is appropriate when you only need a larger copy of the phone screen.

For a phone-based workstation

Use an HDMI-capable hub or dock with a keyboard and mouse. Confirm desktop-mode support first; otherwise the monitor may remain a mirror and window-management features will not appear.

For the fewest cables

Pair Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with a direct display adapter. On compatible Samsung equipment, wireless DeX can remove the HDMI cable, but it requires a supported phone and display and may introduce latency.

For existing USB accessories

Choose a compatible hub, dock, or OTG connection with the required USB ports. This is usually simpler than replacing working peripherals, provided the phone supports both external video and USB input through the chosen connection.

Final connection checklist

  • Exact phone model and software version checked against the manufacturer’s documentation.
  • External video output confirmed; USB-C presence alone was not treated as proof.
  • Monitor or TV set to the HDMI input used by the adapter or hub.
  • Adapter, cable, or hub matches the documented video connection.
  • Keyboard and mouse paired over Bluetooth or connected through supported USB-OTG hardware.
  • Expected behavior identified as either mirrored screen or desktop session.
  • Samsung-specific requirements checked separately if using DeX, including model support and display compatibility for wireless DeX.
