To connect a smart-home device to Alexa, first check the Alexa app’s Devices page. If the device is not already there, open Devices > + > Add Device, choose the device type and brand, and follow the displayed setup. Matter, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and manufacturer-app Wi-Fi devices use different pairing paths. After the device appears in Alexa, create automations from More > Routines by choosing a trigger and one or more actions.

Before you connect anything

Have the device powered on, its setup instructions nearby, and the Alexa app signed in to the Amazon account you want to use. Confirm that the exact model is compatible with Alexa; a product marked Works with Alexa has been certified to work with Alexa, but that label does not mean every Alexa device supports every function.

  • Identify the connection method. The box or manual may specify Wi-Fi, Matter, Zigbee, or Bluetooth. Some Wi-Fi products require their own app and an Alexa skill.
  • Check hub requirements. Zigbee needs an Echo model with a built-in smart-home hub or a separate Zigbee hub. Thread-based Matter needs a Thread-enabled Alexa device online.
  • Check the network. Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work on 2.4 GHz networks. Matter Wi-Fi devices must use the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network as their compatible Matter controller.
  • Plan for proximity. Amazon gives a 30-foot (9-meter) distance guideline for several Matter, Zigbee, and Bluetooth setup paths.
  • Update software. Install available updates for the Alexa app, Echo device, and smart-home product before pairing.

First check whether Alexa connected the device automatically

Open the Alexa app and select Devices. Look through the device list and relevant room or device-type category before starting manual setup. Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup can connect some compatible products during their initial power-up, so a device may already be ready even if you did not explicitly add it.

If the device is listed, select it and try a basic control such as turning a plug or light on and off. Assign it to the correct room if Alexa asks. You do not need to add it again; duplicate entries can make voice commands and routines confusing.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Use the standard Alexa app setup

This is the normal path for a compatible device that is not already shown in Alexa.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Tap the + icon.
  4. Choose Add Device.
  5. Select the device type, then select its brand when prompted.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions, including any request to put the product into pairing mode, scan a code, or sign in to another app.
  7. When setup finishes, return to Devices and test the device.

The device-type screen is important: it routes you to the pairing method that product supports. If you cannot find the brand or model, verify compatibility and consult the product’s own setup instructions rather than repeatedly trying an unrelated category.

Choose the right connection path

Connection type What you need How Alexa finds it Important condition
Manufacturer-app Wi-Fi The product’s app, home Wi-Fi, and usually an Alexa skill Link the manufacturer’s account or enable its skill after the product works in its own app Most smart-home Wi-Fi products use 2.4 GHz; exact requirements vary by model
Matter over Wi-Fi A Matter QR or numeric pairing code and a compatible Matter controller Devices > + > Add Device > Matter, then scan or enter the code The product and controller must use the same 2.4 GHz network
Matter over Thread A Matter code and a Thread-enabled Alexa device online The same Matter setup route, with a compatible Thread border-router capability in the Alexa system A Matter label alone does not guarantee that your Echo supports Thread
Zigbee An Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub or a separate Zigbee hub Put the product in pairing mode, then ask Alexa to discover devices Keep it within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo hub or another connected Zigbee device during pairing
Bluetooth A compatible Bluetooth product with power and pairing mode enabled Ask Alexa to discover devices or use the device-specific Add Device instructions Keep it within 30 ft (9 m); firmware and Echo software should be current

Set up a Wi-Fi device that uses a manufacturer’s app

Some third-party Wi-Fi devices that are not Matter-certified must be configured in the maker’s app before Alexa can control them. Create or sign in to the required account, connect the product to your home network there, and confirm that it responds in that app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete the product’s setup in its manufacturer app, including Wi-Fi credentials and any firmware update.
  2. In the Alexa app, use Devices > + > Add Device and select the product’s brand, or open the brand’s Alexa skill from the setup prompt.
  3. Sign in when Alexa asks and authorize account linking. Some setup flows enable the skill automatically; others require you to enable it manually.
  4. Run device discovery if Alexa does not add the product immediately, then test a command.

The manufacturer app is a useful diagnostic boundary. If the product fails there, fix power, Wi-Fi, or pairing mode before troubleshooting Alexa. If it works in the manufacturer app but not through Alexa, deactivate the associated skill and add it again, then run discovery.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White

Connect a Matter device

Matter setup uses the product’s pairing code rather than a conventional brand skill. The code is usually printed as a QR code and numeric code on the device, its label, or its documentation; keep it available before you begin.

  1. Open Devices > + > Add Device in the Alexa app.
  2. Choose Matter.
  3. Confirm the device category when Alexa asks.
  4. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric pairing code.
  5. Keep the product within 30 ft (9 m) of the compatible Alexa hub or device while pairing.
  6. Wait for Alexa to finish commissioning, then assign the product to a room and test it.

Matter over Wi-Fi

A Matter Wi-Fi product and its compatible Matter controller must be on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. A phone connected to a different band or isolated guest network can prevent commissioning even when the internet is working.

Matter over Thread

Thread-based Matter products require a Thread-enabled Alexa device online. If your Alexa setup has no compatible Thread capability, Amazon’s guidance is to set up the product through another Thread-enabled voice-assistant system first and then connect it to Alexa. Check the exact Echo model and the product’s transport requirements; Matter certification by itself does not establish that the needed Thread support is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Matter categories can expose

Amazon’s developer documentation lists support for categories including lights and plugs, sensors, locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, some appliances, and robotic vacuums. Category support does not promise that every model exposes every control. Check the device’s advertised capabilities and the Alexa hub requirements before buying or installing it.

Amazon Echo Dot Max (newest model), Alexa speaker with room-filling sound and nearly 3x bass, Great for living rooms and medium-sized spaces, Designed for Alexa+, Graphite
  • Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
  • Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
  • Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Pair a Zigbee device through an Echo hub

Look for the Zigbee logo on the product and verify that your Echo model includes a built-in smart-home hub. If it does not, use a separate Zigbee hub that is supported by the product and Alexa.

  1. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to put the Zigbee product into pairing mode.
  2. Place it within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo’s Zigbee hub or another connected Zigbee device during the initial pairing.
  3. Say, “Discover my devices.”
  4. Wait for discovery to finish, then check Devices and place the product in a room.

If discovery finds nothing, the most common causes are an Echo without a Zigbee hub, an incomplete pairing-mode sequence, or excessive distance during setup. Use the manufacturer’s reset and pairing instructions before trying discovery again.

Pair a Bluetooth smart-home device

Turn on a compatible Bluetooth product and ask Alexa to discover devices. Keep it close to the Echo while pairing; Amazon’s guidance for this short-range setup is within 30 ft (9 m).

  1. Confirm that the product supports both Bluetooth and Alexa.
  2. Update the product firmware and Echo software.
  3. Put the product into Bluetooth pairing mode using its own controls or instructions.
  4. Say, “Discover devices,” or use Devices > + > Add Device for the product-specific flow.
  5. After Alexa reports the device, test it and keep it within reliable Bluetooth range for normal use.

If Alexa cannot discover it, turn off Bluetooth pairing on nearby phones or other hubs that may have claimed the product, then repeat the manufacturer’s pairing sequence. The device must be actively discoverable; simply powering it on is not always enough.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue

Create an Alexa routine

A routine combines an event that starts it with one or more actions. The available triggers and actions depend on the devices and services connected to your Alexa account.

  1. Open the Alexa app and select More.
  2. Choose Routines.
  3. Tap the + icon to create a routine.
  4. Select Add an event and choose what should start the routine. Depending on the device, this can include a schedule, a voice phrase, a smart-home state, or another available event.
  5. Select Add an action, then configure one or more actions, such as controlling a connected device or having Alexa respond.
  6. Review any extra settings, conditions, or device-selection options shown for the trigger and actions.
  7. Save the routine and test the trigger.

If a device does not appear in the action list, confirm that it is online and that Alexa has discovered it under the correct device type. A capability that the physical product has but does not expose to Alexa cannot be selected in a routine.

Build an occupancy-based routine

For a presence or occupancy sensor, choose When this happens > Smart Home, then select the sensor or other supported device. Choose whether detection or the absence of detection starts the routine, add the desired actions, and save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon states that an occupancy routine applies to one device. If you need separate sensors or rooms to trigger automation, create separate routines rather than expecting one occupancy rule to monitor multiple devices.

Troubleshoot a device that will not connect

The device is not compatible

Check the exact model number and its Alexa or Matter certification. A product that works with a phone app is not automatically Alexa-compatible, and a Matter device still needs a compatible transport and controller.

Alexa reports “No new devices found”

Look in Devices before repeating setup. Frustration-Free Setup may have connected the product even though a manual discovery attempt returned no new result.

The product is not in pairing mode

Follow the manufacturer’s sequence precisely. Many products require a button hold, a flashing indicator, or a reset before they become discoverable. Do not assume that switching power on starts pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi setup fails

  • Confirm that the home internet connection works.
  • Check whether the product requires 2.4 GHz; for Matter Wi-Fi, put the product and compatible controller on the same 2.4 GHz network.
  • Finish setup in the manufacturer’s app first when the product requires one.
  • Move the product closer to the router during setup if the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.

Matter, Zigbee, or Bluetooth discovery fails

  • Keep the product within the relevant 30 ft (9 m) guidance during pairing.
  • Verify the required hub: a Thread-enabled Alexa device for Thread Matter, or a built-in/separate Zigbee hub for Zigbee.
  • Update the Alexa app, Echo software, and product firmware.
  • Repeat pairing mode, then start discovery again.

The device works in its own app but not in Alexa

Reactivate the associated Alexa skill, or remove and add the skill again, then run discovery. Account linking can expire or fail even while the manufacturer’s app continues to control the product normally.

Nothing fixes the connection

Disconnect the device and set it up again. If necessary, reset the Alexa and smart-home devices, following the manufacturer’s reset instructions before resetting hardware. A hardware reset can erase Wi-Fi credentials, scenes, or other local settings.

What to check when choosing a new Alexa device

Question Why it matters
Which protocol does it use? Wi-Fi, Matter, Zigbee, and Bluetooth have different pairing steps and range expectations.
Does it need a hub? Zigbee needs a compatible hub; Thread Matter needs a Thread-enabled Alexa device.
Is a manufacturer app or skill required? Non-Matter Wi-Fi products commonly need initial setup in their own app and account linking in Alexa.
What functions does Alexa expose? Certification or category support does not guarantee every sensor reading, mode, or control is available for voice commands and routines.
Which Wi-Fi band is required? Most smart-home Wi-Fi devices use 2.4 GHz, and Matter Wi-Fi requires the same 2.4 GHz network as its controller.
How close must it be during setup? Amazon’s guidance for several short-range setup paths is within 30 ft (9 m) of the relevant Echo or hub.

For a straightforward installation, choose a model whose protocol, hub requirements, Alexa capabilities, and network band match the equipment already in your home. Verify those details for the exact model because app labels, supported Echo models, and device capabilities can change.
