How to Connect AI Coding Agents to Observability Data Without Exposing Production Credentials

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

You can let an AI coding agent investigate production telemetry without giving the agent a production API key. Put a permissioned tool boundary—usually an MCP server or an application-side tool broker—between the agent and the observability platform. Keep the provider credential in that trusted service, enforce identity and data permissions there, return only the approved telemetry, and record every call.

The agent should never receive a long-lived observability secret in its files, prompt, environment variables, or logs. OpenAI’s sandbox security documentation summarizes the risk plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” Treat the agent runtime as potentially able to read anything you place inside it.

The secure architecture

A safe connection separates the coding agent from the production account. The agent asks for an allowed operation; a broker or MCP service authenticates to the observability platform, applies policy, and sends back a filtered result.

  1. Coding agent: Runs code, interprets telemetry, and requests tools. It has no production API key.
  2. MCP server or application-side broker: Exposes narrowly defined operations such as querying an error rate or retrieving a bounded log window. It owns the provider credential.
  3. Identity and policy layer: Maps a human or service identity to roles, resource permissions, data-access rules, redaction, approval requirements, and rate limits.
  4. Observability platform: Receives the authenticated request and returns only data permitted for that identity.
  5. Audit and monitoring: Records who requested what, which tool ran, what approval was given, and what result was returned—without recording secrets.

This is a reference architecture, not a requirement that every product use the same components. The security properties matter more than the product label: credentials stay outside the agent process, authorization is enforced at the service, and returned data is deliberately bounded.

Why putting a key in the agent is unsafe

An agent can inspect the runtime in which it operates. If a production key is in an environment variable, configuration file, shell history, mounted secret, prompt, or tool output, generated code may be able to read it. The agent could also accidentally print the value in a diagnostic response, commit it, send it to another tool, or include it in an error report.

A secrets manager does not by itself solve this problem. If the manager injects the actual secret into the agent’s environment, the agent still has access to the credential. The safer pattern is for a trusted server or proxy to retrieve the secret and make the API call on the agent’s behalf. The agent receives data, not the credential used to obtain it.

Separate credential protection from data protection

Keeping a key hidden prevents account takeover, but it does not decide whether logs may be shown to an external model. Logs can contain customer identifiers, tokens, request bodies, source code, or regulated information. Define both controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Credential control: where the provider secret is stored and which process can use it.
  • Data control: which telemetry fields, records, time ranges, and environments may be returned to the model.

Choose where the connection runs

The network location of the MCP connection changes the trust boundary and firewall rules. OpenAI distinguishes executor MCPs, which connect from the customer environment, from remote MCPs, which connect from the service environment. Confirm which mode your coding-agent client supports before configuring allowlists.

Customer-hosted or private MCP

A local, self-hosted, or private broker is usually the better starting point when your organization must own network egress, filtering, approvals, or residency. The broker can reach an internal observability endpoint without exposing that endpoint to a public service, and it can enforce company policy before returning data.

Remote MCP

A remote MCP can be convenient for a public service that already fits the platform’s trust model. The connection originates from the remote service, so your firewall, IP allowlist, and data-transfer review must account for that path. Do not assume that “remote” means the agent is isolated from the service; verify which system receives the tool request and which system can reach your telemetry.

Questions to answer before deployment

  • Which machine opens the connection to the MCP endpoint?
  • Can that machine reach production telemetry directly, or only through a proxy?
  • Where are tool arguments and results processed and retained?
  • Which regions and subprocessors handle returned log content?
  • Can your client disable write-capable tools and restrict the tool list?

Create a separate, least-privileged identity

Do not reuse a personal administrator token. Create a service identity dedicated to agent-assisted diagnosis, or require the broker to act on behalf of the authenticated engineer. Grant only the telemetry resources and operations needed for investigation.

User-based access

Datadog’s MCP documentation describes a model in which the server forwards the authenticated user’s credentials and cannot grant access beyond that user’s existing Datadog permissions. This preserves ordinary role-based access control: an engineer who cannot view a service’s logs cannot obtain them through the agent.

Service-account access

A service account is useful for unattended workflows, but its permissions must be narrower than a human administrator’s. For Datadog, the setup documentation calls for an API key and application key associated with a service account that has only the required permissions. MCP-level permissions and the underlying product or resource permissions both apply.

Separate read and write capabilities

Diagnosis normally needs read operations: search logs, inspect traces, read monitors, or retrieve deployment metadata. Keep mutation operations disabled. Datadog distinguishes mcp_read from mcp_write and requires the relevant underlying resource permission as well. A read-only user’s attempt to invoke a write-enabled tool is rejected.

If a workflow eventually needs to acknowledge an alert, change a monitor, or trigger a rollback, put that action behind a separate tool, identity, approval step, and audit policy. Do not add broad write access to the same diagnostic connection merely for convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Broker credentials outside the agent runtime

Store the observability secret in a credential vault or protected server-side configuration. The broker retrieves it only when handling an authorized request, uses it to call the provider, and returns a minimized result.

What the agent should send

Expose structured parameters rather than an unrestricted HTTP client. A diagnostic tool might accept a service name, environment, time window, query filter, and maximum result count. Validate each parameter against an allowlist:

  • Permit production only when the caller has explicit production entitlement.
  • Require bounded time ranges, such as the last 15 minutes or a maximum of one hour.
  • Cap rows, bytes, and pagination depth.
  • Reject arbitrary URLs, shell commands, and provider-specific administration endpoints.
  • Normalize queries to prevent an agent from bypassing a log restriction.

What the broker should return

Return the smallest useful representation: grouped error counts, trace identifiers, stack traces with secrets removed, or a limited set of matching records. Strip authorization headers, cookies, access tokens, session identifiers, payment data, and fields covered by your privacy policy. If raw log content is necessary, make that an explicit, separately authorized operation.

Prevent secret leakage in diagnostics

  • Never include the provider key in tool errors, stack traces, prompts, or audit records.
  • Redact environment-variable names and common token patterns before returning text.
  • Ensure request libraries do not log authorization headers at debug level.
  • Keep broker logs separate from agent transcripts and apply shorter retention to sensitive payloads.

Limit the tool and data surface

More tools create more ways for an agent to reach sensitive systems. Start with a small read-only toolset designed for incident diagnosis. Datadog’s code-execution toolset is described as permitting only read-only Datadog API calls and applying existing role permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use policy at the source

Apply role-based access control, data-access controls, and log restriction queries in the observability platform. Source-side restrictions are stronger than instructions in a prompt because they remain effective if the agent ignores a policy message.

Review code-execution results

Datadog advises reviewing code-execution results when underlying logs contain customer data. Treat a result as sensitive even if the agent only requested an aggregate: an exception, payload fragment, or embedded identifier may still be present.

Choose safe defaults

  • Default to the current service and a short time window.
  • Require an explicit environment value for production.
  • Return aggregates before raw events.
  • Disable cross-tenant and unrestricted account searches.
  • Require human approval when a query would expose customer content or broaden scope.

Restrict network egress

Allow only the MCP endpoint, the observability API endpoints, the credential vault, and required identity services. Deny general outbound internet access from the broker where practical. Network rules must match the connection mode: a local executor and a remote MCP have different source addresses and failure modes.

Datadog documents an IP allowlist for limiting which origins may reach its MCP Server. Use that control together with your own firewall rules, not as a substitute for identity permissions. An allowed IP should still be required to authenticate and pass resource-level authorization.

Make every action auditable

Capture enough context to reconstruct an investigation without capturing the secret itself. A useful audit record includes:

  • Human or service identity and the client that initiated the call.
  • Tool name, normalized arguments, target environment, and time range.
  • Approval decision and the policy rule that allowed or denied the request.
  • Provider request identifier and result size.
  • Redaction or filtering actions applied before the result was returned.
  • Failure reason, retry count, and destination network decision.

Datadog says MCP calls appear in Audit Trail with MCP metadata, including the tool, arguments, user identity, and client. OpenAI describes OpenTelemetry export for prompt, approval, tool, MCP, and proxy events. Configure retention according to the sensitivity of the telemetry, and ensure audit pipelines cannot accidentally ingest the provider key.

Implementation sequence

  1. Define the investigation use case. List the exact questions the agent must answer, such as “Which endpoint produced the 5xx spike in the last 15 minutes?” Avoid starting with unrestricted log search.
  2. Choose the connection location. Select a private or customer-hosted broker when you need control of connectivity, filtering, or approvals. Select a remote MCP only after reviewing its network and data-handling model.
  3. Create the identity. Use a dedicated service account or delegated user identity. Grant only the required observability resources.
  4. Enable read permissions. Turn on the MCP read capability and the underlying product permissions. Leave write capabilities disabled.
  5. Place the credential in the broker. Retrieve it from a vault or protected server-side configuration. Do not mount it into the agent container or expose it as an environment variable available to generated code.
  6. Implement narrow tools. Validate service, environment, query, time range, and result limits. Reject arbitrary network destinations and administrative operations.
  7. Filter returned data. Apply source-side restrictions, field redaction, row and byte limits, and aggregate-first responses. Test with logs containing tokens and customer identifiers.
  8. Lock down egress. Permit only the necessary MCP, observability, identity, and vault endpoints. Add the provider’s IP allowlist where available.
  9. Add approvals. Require a human decision for production scope, raw customer data, long time ranges, or any write operation.
  10. Instrument and test. Record tool metadata, deny test requests that exceed policy, verify that keys never appear in transcripts, and rehearse revoking the service identity.
  11. Roll out gradually. Start with one service and read-only aggregates. Expand only after reviewing audit records and false-denial cases.

Datadog MCP Server as a concrete example

For a team already using Datadog, its MCP Server illustrates the controls to evaluate. Datadog documents agent access to observability tools while preserving the authenticated user’s existing permissions. The setup covers MCP permissions, product permissions, toolsets, and network allowlisting.

Create a service account with the minimum required Datadog permissions, then provision the API key and application key for the broker—not for the coding agent. Enable only the read toolset needed for diagnosis. Confirm that the account can read the intended logs, traces, monitors, or other resources and cannot access unrelated teams or tenants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Datadog announced general availability of its MCP Server on March 9, 2026. Availability, supported clients, and feature names can change, so verify the current setup documentation before deployment. The existence of this integration demonstrates one implementation; it does not make it suitable for every observability stack.

How to compare connection options

There is no neutral scorecard that makes one MCP or broker correct for every organization. Compare each option against the same security and operational questions.

Decision area Questions to ask
Identity Is access tied to the human user, a delegated identity, or a service account? Can permissions be revoked quickly?
Permission granularity Can you scope by team, service, environment, dataset, and operation?
Read/write separation Are write tools disabled by default and independently approved?
Data filtering Can you restrict fields, rows, time ranges, queries, and raw log content before data reaches the model?
Connection location Does the executor connect from your network, or does a remote service connect to the provider?
Credential storage Does the agent ever receive the provider secret, or does a broker keep it server-side?
Network controls Can you use private routing, egress rules, and provider IP allowlists?
Audit detail Are tool, arguments, identity, client, approvals, and result metadata recorded without secrets?
Model data exposure Can sensitive log content be returned to the model, and can you require approval before that happens?

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent can query nothing

Check the connection mode and network path first. Then verify both MCP-level permission and the underlying observability resource permission. A valid API key alone does not guarantee access to a particular dataset.

The agent receives “forbidden” for a write tool

This is expected when the identity is read-only. Keep the denial unless the workflow genuinely requires a change. If a write is necessary, create a separate approved operation rather than broadening the diagnostic identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logs contain secrets in model responses

Move redaction to the broker and the observability query layer. Add pattern-based masking for tokens, cookies, credentials, and personal identifiers. Reduce the tool to aggregates or selected fields, and review any code-execution result that can include raw records.

A firewall rule works for a local client but not a hosted one

The source network is different. Identify whether the executor or the remote service opens the connection, then update the allowlist and egress policy for that origin. Do not solve the problem by opening the observability API to the public internet.

A secret appears in audit logs

Inspect HTTP debug logging, exception serialization, request headers, and tool arguments. Rotate the exposed credential, remove it from retained records where possible, and add redaction before re-enabling the integration.

The agent retrieves too much data

Enforce limits server-side: shorter time windows, maximum rows and bytes, query allowlists, and pagination caps. Prompt instructions are not a substitute for these controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production-readiness checklist

  • The agent runtime contains no provider API key, application key, vault token, or copied secret.
  • A broker or MCP server owns authentication and returns filtered results.
  • The identity is dedicated and least privileged.
  • Read tools are enabled; write tools are disabled or separately approved.
  • Production access requires explicit scope and, where appropriate, human approval.
  • Source-side RBAC, data-access controls, and log restrictions are active.
  • Raw logs are minimized, redacted, and bounded by time, row, and byte limits.
  • Egress rules and provider IP allowlists match the actual connection location.
  • Audit records include identity, tool, arguments, approvals, client, and result metadata without secrets.
  • Rotation and revocation procedures have been tested.
  • Changes to the MCP client, broker, provider permissions, or model are reviewed as security changes.

Bottom line

Connect the coding agent to observability through a policy-enforcing MCP server or credential-brokering application, not through a key placed in the agent’s environment. Keep production credentials server-side, authorize at the identity and data layers, expose read-only and narrowly scoped tools, restrict network paths, filter sensitive telemetry, and audit every request. This lets an agent help diagnose production issues while preserving the controls that protect the production account and the data inside its logs.
