You can connect a wired speaker without a headphone jack by matching the phone or TV’s audio output to the speaker system’s input. For a phone, that usually means a USB-C-to-3.5 mm or Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. For a TV, use a compatible HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connection—or an optical-to-analog converter if the speaker system accepts only analog audio. If the speaker is passive, it also needs an amplifier or receiver.
First, check the ports and whether the speaker is powered
“Wired speaker” does not specify which cable or adapter you need. Check the source device’s actual audio output and the speaker system’s input. Common connections include 3.5 mm analog, RCA analog, optical digital, HDMI ARC/eARC, and bare speaker wire. The connectors and signal types must be compatible at both ends.

Also find out whether the speaker is active (powered) or passive. Active speakers have amplification built in and can connect directly when their input matches the source. Passive speakers need a stereo amplifier or receiver between them and the phone or TV; an adapter or digital-to-analog converter does not supply speaker-driving power. Genelec explains that its active speakers can connect directly to a TV when the connections are compatible.

USB-C phone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
Use a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter, then plug the speaker’s 3.5 mm cable into the adapter. Confirm that the speaker’s 3.5 mm jack is an audio input. Apple documents using its USB-C adapter with speakers and other audio devices. Apple’s USB-C adapter instructions describe the connection.

Lightning phone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
Use a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter, then connect the speaker cable. The adapter must match the phone’s Lightning port; a USB-C adapter is not interchangeable. Apple’s instructions cover Lightning iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 10 or later. See Apple’s Lightning adapter instructions.
These phone adapter routes provide analog audio for a compatible 3.5 mm input. They do not power passive speakers. If the speaker system has RCA inputs instead, you need a compatible connection from the phone adapter’s 3.5 mm output to those inputs, and the speaker system still must be powered or connected to an amplifier.

Connect a TV to a wired speaker system
Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both devices support it
If the TV and audio system both have compatible HDMI ARC/eARC ports, connect those ports with an HDMI cable and select the corresponding sound output in the TV’s settings. ARC/eARC is for compatible TV audio equipment; it is not a universal analog output for connecting a bare speaker or any 3.5 mm cable. Supported features and menu names depend on the TV and audio system. Samsung’s eARC setup instructions note that support varies by model.
Use optical digital audio with an optical input
If the TV has an optical audio output and the audio system has an optical input, connect them with an optical cable. Check the TV’s manual or sound menu to verify that the port is an output and that the system accepts the signal. Optical is digital, so it will not connect directly to an analog-only 3.5 mm or RCA input.

Convert optical output for analog-only speakers
When the TV has optical output but the audio system accepts only RCA or 3.5 mm analog audio, place a compatible optical-to-analog DAC between them: TV optical output → DAC optical input → DAC analog output → speaker system’s analog input. Panasonic describes an optical converter as an option when an audio system lacks an optical input. See Panasonic’s TV audio connection guidance.
A DAC converts the signal; it does not amplify passive speakers. Connect its analog output to powered speakers or to an amplifier/receiver that can drive the speakers.

Set the TV audio format if an optical DAC produces no sound
Some optical converters accept stereo PCM but not surround formats such as Dolby Digital or 5.1. If the TV is sending a format the converter cannot handle, select PCM or stereo in the TV’s digital audio output settings, if available. MEE audio’s optical setup guidance specifies stereo or PCM for its setup rather than Dolby/5.1 formats. Check MEE’s optical audio instructions and the manuals for your particular TV and converter; supported formats vary by device.

Troubleshoot a connection with no sound
- Confirm that you identified an audio output on the phone or TV and an audio input on the speaker system—not two outputs or mismatched ports.
- Check that the adapter fits the phone’s port and that the speaker system is powered on.
- For optical connections, confirm the cable runs from the TV’s optical output to the converter or system’s optical input. If a converter is involved, check whether the TV can be set to PCM or stereo.
- For HDMI ARC/eARC, use the labeled compatible ports on both devices and choose the corresponding TV sound output. Consult the model manuals for setup steps.
- If the speakers are passive, verify that they are connected to an amplifier or receiver; neither a phone adapter nor an optical DAC can replace one.
